brendan and I have been working on a python program to pretend to be the
disk drive of the robot (which connects to it over serial)
the hope is to be able to save and load programs from the robot to a
normal computer, like the 3d printer (to which it is presently attached)
i hooked up a logic analyzer to spy on the conversation between the robot
and its disk drive, and the results are here:
http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/floppy-loadafile.logicdata
there are other .logicdata files in there too, some don't have the session
configured to decode the serial data (4800 baud, EVEN parity, inverted)
you can read the analyzed data with Salae Logic, a free download.
OR just read the python program we wrote:
https://github.com/jerkey/yasnac/blob/master/src/engine.py
on line 36 we answer the robot's request to LST the files by sending the
following text: (in the program it's constructed from two strings)
"\x02\x13\x00LST0001123.JBI \x00\xfc"
this works (the robot responds with ACK) but it we change ANYTHING it
doesn't like it and says NAK NAK NAK
i thought the last byte would be a checksum, but the whole thing does NOT
add up to something divisible by 256, and furthermore if I change the file
name (123.JBI) to 124.JBI AND change the last \xfc to \xfb, it fails -
which means it is not using a simple checksum (right?)
help figure this out! we need to be able to send the robot arbitrary
filenames and have it accept the packet (and then we can start sending the
program data)

Hi All,
Please find attached an invitation to all the local biohacker groups from
Arvind at SOS ventures. If you'd like to come, you're welcome to!
All the best,
Ryan
======Event Description=======
The biotech revolution is here. For the last 3 months we have been
accelerating 6 companies in the worlds first synthetic biotech accelerator,
SynBio axlr8r. Each with a development and release timeline more on par
with software than traditional bio/pharma thanks to recent advances in
Synthetic Biology.
These six new synthetic biology companies are gearing up to launch their
products that are largely made by designing the metabolic pathways of
biological systems to make medically, commercially and industrially
valuable substances. They include bullet-proof silk sequenced from hagfish,
synthetic cannabinoids for medical purposes, civet-free high end coffee,
cow milk brewed from yeast, desk-top DNA printers, and petunias that change
color according to human design.
I would like to invite you to attend the inaugural demo day this September
23 at Runway.is in San Francisco, CA

Hallo Internets,
It's Proxy from HackMiami and I just landed in SF! If anyone would be
cool enough to spare a couch for a few days it would be greatly
appreciated. I'm going to be in SF for a couple weeks but only need a
couch for a couple days. Either way, I'm new to Cali and would like to
meet some like-minded folks. See ya on the flip-side.

I just want to say at this point that I'm entirely on Team
Rent-Out-The-Ballroom, and very unenthusiastic about full-time leases
for small room unless they will be curated by rad participatory omni
collectives. So I really like this OMP proposal and I think the
mandate to keep those rooms common/shared/schedulable is actually a
huge plus.

In fact, maybe we should just rename our building the Multiplex, or
Mux for short. :)
sudo,
dude is coming at 8 am tomorrow (monday morning, september 22) to install new glass in the skylights. The installer is prepared with tarps, etc., but would appreciate it if people at CCL would move their delicate / electronic / sensitive/ whatever equipment at least to under the tables they are currently on. they are planning to do the three big skylights directly over CCL and the area between sudo and CCL… Not sure who to contact about this directly, could use some input.
brenda
Critical Resistance rented stage lights for last night's event and they
have gone missing!
Has anyone seen them / moved them? Can you please let me know where they
are, if so?
They need to return them tomorrow!

To: omnilogistics(a)lists.riseup.net
Hey folks in the Bocce Ball Room (CCL and Sudo), John is having the
skylights repaired starting tuesday! There are 6 skylights to replace.
Bellow are his remarks on what will be happening...
This is the procedure:
- Number the skylights
* 6 2*
* 4 3*
* 5 1 [dressing room #1]*
- Tuesday 1 & 2 will be worked on. Ricky doesn't think anything will drop
below. As a precaution of course please vacate that area. Ricky will put
down tarps.
- Next 3,4 then 5,6 on other days.
The schedule is somewhat flexible. Possibly #1 can be worked on in the
morning, then #2 in the afternoon to make a smaller disruption footprint.
Possibly it will go faster.
The existing vents on 3,4,5,6 will be kept, allowing OOC to later install
exhaust fans if desired. The replacement panels will be laminated glass.
Let me know if you have more questions for him.

* CONSENSUS ITEMS:
** TIL splitting into TIL and a community print collective: concerns
expressed about extent of space requested (2/3 of sudo size for less than
1/3 the price); public accessibility (currently one day a week and cost for
use); interested sudoers should join the print collective and help shape it
to be as commons-oriented as we can!

above the stage be the dedicated sound equipment room (it's already set up
as such)
** PA proposal: Sudoer Ed has a PA he will donate to Omni!
** Ballroom Events: All omni ballroom events that need the space dedicated
should apply here

Please join the ballroom working group (meets Wednesdays from 6-8) to help
with deciding on and scheduling events in the ballroom!
** Working Group Autonomy: Sudo suggests that the Facilitating Collectivity
working group decide what WGs are autonomously empowered to do.
** Occupy Oakland 3rd Anniversary: "Sudoroom formally requests that the
urban shield event on the 3rd anniversary of occupy oakland be offered the
ballroom instead of the basement."
* NEWBIE NIGHT: Alex is hosting this coming Tuesday, the 23rd.
* CHECK YOUR GITTIP ACCOUNTS!! - We went down another $40 this past week.
* SPACE IMPROVEMENTS:
** Contact Whitney or Sean to help with electrification of sudo - namely,
bending and running conduit!
** Floorplan: Contact Korl to help with rearranging sudo space - namely,
building a catwalk on top of our shelves for modular second-level units.
Also: pulley platforms with plants on them underneath the skylights!
** Lighting: Contact Noemie who has a plan for improving our lighting
situation!
** Fire Inspection: We'll need to remove burnables, store them under the
stage or paint them. Also piles of stuff need to be shelved and organized.
Tape notes to objects that need to move / change

Hi all,
I have an unexpected chunk of free time on Saturday, and I was hoping to
use it to start prepping the floors in CCL. Should be done well before the
CR event at 6pm.
I'm not planning to use a heavy-duty grinder, just a concrete prep tool like
this <http://www6.homedepot.com/tool-truck-rental/Concrete_Prep_Tool/12570/>.
I've never used one of these, but I would still expect it to make a
substantial amount of noise - at a minimum like running a high-powered
vacuum for a couple of hours. I may try to cut down on dust by running it
wet, if that is an option.
I know this is short notice, but I hope we can make it work - the floors
are the #1 obstacle holding up progress getting our lab up and running
right now, and there's just not that many times I can carve out a big chunk
of time.
It would be good if someone can check this with John as well, since we'll
be making noise right underneath him...
Thanks!
Patrik
Hi all,
I realized that for certain people who have been consistently working very,
very, very hard on the ADA & Fire Prev. infrastructure and ballroom almost
every day the last few weeks specifically in preparation for the CR event,
that its important these folks all have a chance to actually see and
feel their hard work come to fruition and even $15 may be too much.
Therefore I would like to propose an ultra late breaking request that the
following people have Omni buy their ticket, if they want to go:
- Benjamin Burke (sudo)
- Oskar (omni)
- TJ (sudo)
- Sean (sudo)
- Maximillian (FNB)
- Yar (sudo)
MANY of us have been working very hard on the ballroom, but these folks
above really have put in crazy hours for weeks straight now. I do not mean
to discount in any way the hard work of everyone.. I just feel like the
above folks have really gone just so far above and beyond, that their
effort needs to be recognized and this would be a very good way to do it.
This sort of selfless support is so admirable and inspiring and cant be
taken for granted -
Yes, I am also too broke to go, but it feels weird asking for myself
obviously. Itd be nice though and i really wish i could.
Anyhow If its okay with people id like to ask these folks get their ticket
from omni.
Would that be okay?
David
i am worried that the fans that are in the ceiling now will be removed,
and we will no longer have the option of attaching long ducts to them for
localized air/fume extraction.
is there some way we can request that the fans remain there somehow? or
some way to ventilate air out of the room? I think this is really
important.

the robot has an external disk drive which is connected to it with a
25-pin serial cable. The disk drive unit is a computer in itself, with a
lot of functionality. It boots up in "ERC MODE" meaning it's ready to
talk to the YASNAC ERC, our robot control computer.
i spied on the conversation between the robot and the disk drive while the
robot loaded a file. I saved the conversation using the salae logic
program:
https://www.saleae.com/downloads
if you run this program you can open the save file i saved:
http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/floppy-loadafile.logicdata
you will see that the format matches closely that which is described by
the communications manual:
http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/479236-17-Communications.pdf
the baud rate is 4800 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, EVEN parity.
it's connected to the 3d printer computer if you want to write a program
to pretend to be a disk drive. then we can send it programs without
having to use ancient floppy diskettes.
to talk to it from that computer (whose IP address is .42.8) just run a
script called "robot" in ~sudodesk/bin/robot
it calls screen /dev/ttyS0 4800,parenb,-parodd
(that's how you get even parity with screen)
when i open that terminal, and then go to the floppy menu from the robot,
it sends the following (? means unprintable character):
ENQ?ENQ?ENQ?CAN+?CAN+?CAN+?EOT?
which means, probably; HEY ARE YOU THERE?
HEY ARE YOU THERE?
HEY ARE YOU THERE?
NEVER MIND.
NEVER MIND.
NEVER MIND.
I'M HANGING UP NOW.
see if you can get the robot to load a file from an imaginary disk drive.

Artist activist grants!
http://www.rauschenbergfoundation.org/grants/art-grants/artist-activist
Artist as Activist
Program Overview
Artist as Activist provides game-changing resources to artists (of all disciplines – visual, performing, media, and beyond), designers, and other creative professionals who are addressing important global challenges through their creative practice. In years past this support has included a commissioned print edition to benefit a particular cause or organization. Today the Artist as Activist program is comprised of three distinct grant opportunities:
Artist as Activist Fellows: artists and legally established art collectives with a demonstrated commitment to applying their creative work to the public sphere will receive up to $100,000 over two years, along with a suite of value-added support. Fellows will be selected through an open call for proposals.
Artist as Activist Travel & Research Grants: a separate pool of funds has been reserved for similar artists seeking support (ranging from $2,500 to $10,000) to travel or conduct research related to this aspect of their work. Travel/Research grantees will be selected through an open call for proposals.
Artist as Activist Organizations: Ten organizations from across the U.S. that have been exemplars in supporting artists working at the intersection of art and change will receive general operating support. These organizational grants are by invitation only.
Program Values and Beliefs
Consistent with our commitment to upholding the legacy of our founder, Robert Rauschenberg, all of RRF’s philanthropy programs operate with a set of core values that embody his work as both an artist and a philanthropist. These values include experimentation, fearlessness, and pushing boundaries. Rauschenberg also sought to learn from other cultures, and to share his own knowledge in exchange for what he learned. The Artist as Activist program retains this approach with a particular focus on:
Creative problem-solving and solutions orientation – looking at an issue in new ways that actually shift its paradigm.
Interdisciplinary collaboration – experience and enthusiasm for working with people who have a variety of expertise, experience, and training, as well as those whose beliefs, values, and norms differ from your own.
Risk-taking – an ability to move outside of the status quo; comfort with uncertainty, improvisation, and/or iteration in the context of continuous learning.
How to Apply
All eligible applicants are invited to apply for only one of these grant opportunities. Please consult the Apply Now page to review the appropriate Grant Guidelines and Online Application Instructions to prepare your letter of interest.
