Hey all,
Seeking consensus next week. To open an account with the Internet Archive
Federal Credit Union http://iafcu.org/ we need to pass a resolution for
depository authorization--too allow the IAFCU to make deposits.
I propose the following based on the explanation provided to me by IAFCU
staff to reach consensus in the next two meetings:
"sudo room resolves to allow the Internet Archive Federal Credit Union to
make deposits."
// Matt
Hey all,
I'm working out a series of scripts, or a "wrapper" if you will, to layer
on top of an existing Linux installation with all the necessary tidbits to
help a person be able to start hacking on their open source project
immediately in their current hackerspace (while minimizing setup time and
computer headaches). I'll post up a working script by the middle of next
week and try to incorporate all feature requests.
This can be portable, but for right now I'm focusing on Debian-based
distributions (Mint, Ubuntu, #!, Tails, etc.) to get started.
How will it work?
Run a live CD such as Tails and run the wrapper to immediately set you up
with all necessary tools and scripts. Save all the changes you like to
persistent storage (a thumb drive or hard disk) so you'll never have to
repeat the process. Code hosted on
Github<https://github.com/sunjam/hak/wiki/Feature-Request>so you can
vet and fork it.
Is this for a specific hackerspace?
No, my hope is that the idea will be incorporated by anyone needing a
little assistance with using open source tools. I also see a lot of
confused people who cannot get on the wireless without assistance in their
local hackerspace.
Why do I need it?
Step into X hackerspace for the first time and get instant access to the
internet, open the most recent class notes, print a document on the
printer, and anything else you can imagine.
How can I help?
Submit your feature
requests<https://github.com/sunjam/hak/wiki/Feature-Request>and code
to Github. Also, spread the word to any person or space who may
be interested.
Hi Folks,
Went over to Ace Monster Toys today for the first time for their microcontroller meetup. Similar mix of first time visitors and people randomly hacking on other things interacting. Also went down and checked out their shop, definitely pretty well set up on the fabrication side. Anyone care to join for another visit to do some laser cutting and whatnot?
What ever happened to the idea of a federated coalition? Would anyone else be interested in coming up with a scheme of being a member of multiple spaces? One theory just brainstorming would be to have an RFID key or something to track what proportion of time is spent at various spaces and allocate membership dues proportionately. I talked to them about applying their starving hacker rate to people with an existing hackerspace membership but the combined total would still be higher than necessary. Thoughts?

Two bans have been proposed at tonight's sudo room meeting. They are up for
discussion on the mailing list for a week before we decide vote at next
weeks meeting. Banning will require that 2/3 of the members present at next
weeks meeting agree to the bans.
The people up for bans are:
* Ardeen (big read beard)
* Sarah (short-haired lady)
These people have been problematic in a few different ways, mainly in their
use of the space to sleep and as a general living space even after being
told firmly that their sleeping in the space is not ok. They are not sudo
room members.

Subject: bringing CORE trainings to our 'hood
Hi Adams Point friends and neighbors,
I think many of you know that Andrew and I have been participating in the Fire Dept's free community disaster preparation training over the last few months. With the threat of fire looming over us (in addition to earthquakes), we feel some increased urgency in making sure we, as neighbors are prepared. We've been working with some other neighbors to bring CORE I and II trainings right here to Adams Point on Sat, March 1st at the Bellevue Club.
In the event of a disaster,
like a fire or earthquake, we will be on our own for 7-10 days.... So
this is a great opportunity for us to prepare as neighbors. We must
register - follow the link here or below: http://gatheringadamspoint.wordpress.com.. Also, if you are interested, but can't make the date, the FD has additional trainings scheduled at other locations: http://www2.oaklandnet.com/oakca1/groups/fire/documents/webcontent/oak04420…
I hope you'll think about joining for at least CORE I - the morning training. Please forward to others who you think may be interested.
Take care,
Miriam

Hi guys,
Would y'all be down to co-host another event with BAPS? Anarchists from
Chile on a speaking tour of the US.
here's the gist:
http://chilespeakingtour.wordpress.com/https://www.facebook.com/strugglingtowinhttps://sudoroom.org/ai1ec_event/struggling-to-win-anarchists-building-popu…
As BAPS will be hosting too, there will be no donation boxes allowed at
this event..
And, I promise I won't switch this up to be a sudo-only-sponsored event as
with what happened with the Spied Upon event the day before. I'm only just
hoping to get sudo and baps to do more events together, and this is one of
them -
I'm happy to do all the organizing and promotion for this event, also.
I'll be bringing this up at tonight's meeting to see what y'all think -
Best,
David
The problem with ideas is that they are a dime a dozen. There are many
brilliant ideas out there.
Implementing ideas, realizing them and getting buy-in are actually what
holds most people back.
In any given project there are a lot of people who talk, but very few
people who actually roll their sleeves up and get things done. I'm pretty
guilty of talking a lot! When was the last time I was at SudoRoom on a
clean-up day? (smile)
If you want to succeed you have to find a way to find people who actually
implement things and do things, and find a way to make these things happen
in a way that is as or more effective than capitalism's incentives.
I think Mass Effect is on the right track.

Agreed, there are times when one has to choose one's fights, and not
everyone chooses the same fights at the same times. Looks like we agree
about fair use, anonymity, mesh, and the movement for self-ownership of
personal data.
Fighting back with ideas:
Majorly agreed re. "fight back ...with ideas." And "...all the tech in
the world won't help if people don't give a hoot because they're too
exhausted by the Spectacle-induced trance of capital etc. to care, or
don't see why its necessary or in their self-interest." This point is
HUGE, and it's rare to find others in the tech universe who get it. Too
often we confuse the tools with which we build, and the things we build,
with the purposes for which we build.
Martin Luther King had a dial phone and a typewriter. He changed the
world with the power of his ideas. Today each of us has a supercomputer
on our desk and/or in our pocket, and can reach an audience of millions
in the time it takes to blow our noses.
What we lack is an idea: but not just "an" idea, rather a set of ideas,
an ecosystem of ideas that, taken together, open a new view of the world
and ourselves in it, and inspire people to think deeply and act
courageously.
We've inherited a fortune in ideas from all of history, and yet it
appears that something is missing, something that could form a bridge
over which we can walk from the past and present into the future.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that happiness is not
identical with meaning.
The Spectacle and the circuses can produce happiness, but what they
don't produce is a sense of meaning. Instead we're told, often by our
peers, that the most rational view is that life is meaningless, that the
universe has no purpose, and that only a religious or romantic fool
would believe otherwise. But two NOTs don't make an AND: so what we're
left with is a proverbial hole in our soul and nothing to fill it. "The
universe is DEAD!" is hardly a rallying cry for sustainability, much
less for revolution.

*Soil Food Web IntensiveAn Intensive Course With Dr. Elaine InghamMarch 17
- 21, 2014*
GreenFriends Farm / MA Center, Castro Valley, CA
*For More Information Click
Here*<http://www.livingmandala.com/Living_Mandala/Soil_Food_Web_Intensive_March_2…>
*Course Description*
There is a whole world under the soil - and no one knows this cast of
characters better than Elaine Ingham! Elaine is one of the world's leading
soil microbiologists, with 30 years of experience researching and teaching
and an easy and enthusiastic style that brings the soil food web to life.
Elaine literally wrote the book on compost teas: The Compost Tea Brewing
Manual.
Healthy soil has all the interconnected elements of a "web" - which can
retain nutrients, cycle nutrients into the right forms at the right rates
for the plant desired, build soil structure, suppress disease-causing
organisms, protect plant surfaces, produce plant-growth-promoting hormones
and chemicals, and decompose toxic compounds. In this course, you'll look
at the elements of a healthy soil food web, learn how to analyze and
improve your own soil, and learn how to make composts and extracts to
strengthen the soil food web.
The course will cover the soil food web, soil food web analysis, composts
and compost extracts, and the use of microscopes.
*Format & Modules*
- Day 1 & 2 (March 17-18): Soil Food Web Fundamentals ~ $275
- Day 3 (March 19): Compost Technology ~ $145
- Day 4 (March 20): Compost Tea Technology ~ $145
- Day 5 (March 21): Light Microscope Training ~ $166
* Participants can sign up for the entire course or specific modules as
outlined below:
*Schedule & Module Description*
The course daily schedule is from 9:00 am - 5:30 pm.
*Day 1 & 2: Soil Food Web Fundamentals (March 17-18)** - *Dr. Elaine
Ingham uncovers the basic principles of the Soil Foodweb, plant
relationships, and bacterial to fungi ratios in this in-depth two day
primer. Not only will you gain a fundamental understanding of the way soil
biology drives plant nutrition, you will learn how modern agriculture
selects for disease and pests. A must for anyone wanting a complete
understanding of soil health and healthy plants.
*Day 3: Compost Technology (March 19)* - Not all compost is created equal.
There is a big difference between good compost and reduced waste. One
of the biggest mistakes people make when building a compost pile is not
selecting the different Carbon:Nitrogen ratios for the plants they're
growing. Learn how to select the proper ratios that will give your plants
the exact biology they need to thrive.
*Day 4: Compost Tea Technology (March 20)* - We cover the processes that
will maximize biological diversity to get the most bang for your buck.
Actively Aerated Compost Tea (AACT) and Liquid Compost Extract (LCE) are
the most efficient methods for bringing back micobe diversity. This allows
you to eliminate inorganic fertilizers and herbicides which decrease
diversity and degrade soil health.
*Day 5: Light Microscope Training (March 21) *- Dr. Elaine Ignham leads
this very special day of training on effective light microscope techniques
and identification. Learn from the master herself about what constituents
good compost and compost tea on a microscopic level. This part of the
class is essential for anyone who wishes to gain "eyes on" knowledge of the
soil universe and what really goes on under our feet. Get the necessary
training to identify the bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes that
drive the health and well being of our plants. Students are encouraged to
bring their own microscope. Microscopes will also be available for a group
discount at the workshop.
*Who Should Attend? *
Class is suitable for beginners to advanced practitioners. This intensive
course is for farmers, landscapers, ranchers, creators and distributors of
agricultural products, waste management professionals, soil and garden
enthusiasts of all types, and anyone who touches the earth.
Simply put, this information needs to be central to any sustainable
agriculture or land management. Participants receive a certification of
completion. This course will give you the tools you need to make healthy,
site-specific compost for beautiful results every time!

Hey all,
The Bay Area Public School has scheduled a surveillance awareness event on
Friday 2/21 7-9pm in the common room entitled Spied Upon: Surveillance &
Resistance. I was hoping we (sudo) could co-host this event with BAPS,
because I think it'd be really cool if we start doing more events together.
BAPS can do most all of the setup, but it'd be great if Sudo can do
outreach too, since I think it'd be in the interest of both communities.
What do you think?
There's a twofold focus on informants and technological surveillance.
Here's the Sudo Room calendar *event link
<https://sudoroom.org/ai1ec_event/spied-upon-bay-area-premiere-baps/>*.
Details are below -
*Spied Upon: Surveillance and Resistance*
Join us Friday February 21st 7-9 pm at the Bay Area Public
School<http://thepublicschool.org/node/36455> &
Sudo Room
2141 Broadway (enter on 22nd), Oakland - three blocks from 19th St. Bart!
Between the ever-present fear of informants to the profusion of metadata
collection and the construction of the Domain Awareness
Center<http://oaklandwiki.org/Domain_Awareness_Center> (DAC)
in Oakland, the growing problem of surveillance has made it into the
mainstream dialog, but the people and communities most affected are
sometimes being left out of the conversation.
Join us for an evening of ideas, discussion and questions about solidarity
in the face of this intimidation. How do we support one another and our
movements when being targeted by police, surveillance and informants? What
are the legal, community and political responses that can best keep the
larger "us" safe and allow our movements to flourish?
*- SPEAKERS -*
*Jason Kirkpatrick*, filmmaker and activist, will show clips of and discuss
his upcoming film, *Spied Upon* <http://spiedupon.com/>. Interviewing
activists across the world and telling his own personal story, Jason will
take us on a journey into one of Europe's biggest political surveillance
scandals, documenting growing movements of resistance to surveillance along
the way.
*Zahra Billoo*, Civil rights attorney and Executive Director at the Bay
Area *Council on American-Islamic Relations* <http://www.cair.com/> (CAIR),
speaks on the use of informants in a post-9/11 context, their impact, the
community's resistance and lessons learned.
*Richard Brown*, Black Panther and member of the
*SF8*<http://www.freethesf8.org/who.html>,
will share his history with undercover police and surveillance, imparting
the 'long view' of solidarity learned from a lifetime of activism.
*- Panel Discussion -*
Q & A with the speakers will follow in conversation with representatives
from:
*Bay Area Anti-Repression
Committee*<https://oaklandantirepression.wordpress.com/>
*Bay Area Coalition to Stop Political
Repression*<http://araborganizing.org/campaigns-our-work/coalition-to-stop-political-re…>

All donations gratefully received will go to the Bay Area Anti-Repression
Committee and the Legal Workers at the Bay Area chapter of the NLG - two
groups long supporting the Bay Area radical community with legal and
educational assistance. Thank you!

Hi everyone, I wanted to make people aware of an event coming up this
weekend and try to get some help.
I'm volunteering to mentor Data Science at the Black Male Achievement
Startup Weekend this weekend:
http://bmaoakland.startupweekend.org/
The attendees will form teams to try and address issues related to public
health, sustainability, education, restorative justice, and gaming. As a
mentor, it's my job to go around and help the teams. I would like to be
able to facilitate progress with each group by providing the tools and data
they need to enhance work on their focus areas.
If you know of some good open datasets that fall into the areas of health
care, sustainability, education, restorative justice, or gaming, could you
please recommend them to me? Also, if you are interested in coming out as a
volunteer and helping me, or others at the event, consider registering!

Well to play devil's advocate:
creative, qusetioning students with computer science skills are valued by
the industrialists nowadays. They actually seek out people who are a little
rebellious.
I read that some of the more innovative Chinese high schools are ditching
standardized tests, encuraging more creative education, as they see it as
their only ticket to becoming an economy on the high end of the value chain
(more creative, more design-focused)
What if the evil capitalists support a more intelliectual, creative
education free of rote education?

Outside of the narrow regulatory question, this reminds me of another
relating to the vocationalization of programming to supply commoditized
labor to large corporations, which is something I am uneasy around and
which I think reflects a shifting power balance that deserves to be
opposed. Here is a line of criticism that I think is right on, running from
Seymour Papert to Bret Victor to
this<
http://programmingisterrible.com/post/73056840109/paperts-dreams-and-our-gr…
>
:
*"In ?Meanwhile, at code.org <http://worrydream.com/MeanwhileAtCodeOrg/>?,
Bret juxtaposes the ideals of Seymour Papert and the dreams of
entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Papert wanted to use programming as
a way to let children explore powerful ideas and let their imagination run
wild. The agenda of the political, wealthy, and powerful is to build a new
generation of worker bees to fuel their startups. One sees code as a
liberation, and the other as a vocation..."*

I'll sponsor it, but can't do much leg work.
Perhaps BAPS should consider whether it is inclined to support events billed as fundraisers for worthy groups and individuals, but reserve asking for funds for all other events? This way a fundraiser is a rare and exceptional event, where it is clear the purpose and the flow of funds, versus the general expectation of completely free events hosted by BAPS.
Does this produce an ethical and moral consistency with the motivation of the policy? Would this make the policy more cleat to event collaborators: "either free or it's a full-blown fundraiser"?

Hi all..
I know there hasn't been much activity on this thread, but I was wondering if I could up the ante. Because sometimes, life's just like that.
Would we (sudo) be willing to entirely host this event? Without BAPS..
I ask because the event's organizers would really like for there to be a simple donation box somewhere off to the side in the space, for folks to be able to donate directly at the event. This money would go to Oakland's Anti-Repression Committee and National Lawyer Guild's Legal Workers (the non-lawyer workforce part of the NLG).
Within BAPS, there has emerged some reservation amongst organizers that having any other group (that is not BAPS) accept donations at an event BAPS hosts, might abrogate our statement of financial principles that there be no solicitation at the event. There's a confusion here that can't work itself out until our next general meeting at the earliest, which isn't for a while, and in the meantime.. the event needs to be promoted and have a home that is assured.
So having Sudo solely host this event instead of BAPS, would solve a real headache for us.
Are we down for this? I've already set the speakers and logistics up.. we just need a home, and hopefully, be able to put it on Sudo's facebook.
alla best,David
