Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that you are welcome to join us this Saturday (7/6) at 2PM
for Today I Learned: GIT Version Control for Non Coders (Writers, Lawyers,
everyone!)<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Today_I_Learned#July_6:_GIT_Version_Control_for_N…>
.
What is git anyway? "Git allows a team of people to work together, all
using the same files. And it helps the team cope with the confusion that
tends to happen when multiple people are editing the same files."
[source<http://www.quora.com/What-is-Git-used-for-What-does-it-do-exactly>
]
It is one of the primary ways that coders work together and one of the key
tools in the development of open source software. Although it's mostly used
by coders, it has lots of potential uses for people who don't code and is
very useful for anyone who is learning to code.
We will be learning all about version control and trying it out ourselves!
No prior knowledge is necessary.
See you soon,
Marina
hi all,
the fire extinguisher in the commons room (which was located on the wall by
the light switches) is missing and it needs to come back!
if you have any leads, let me know off-list.

Hey everyone,
So I've been doing sound art meet ups at sudo room since about March now
and I'm considering expanding the format a bit. How many of you would show
up to an art and technology meet up?
I'm at trying to arrange a sudoers yoga lesson tomorrow Friday at noon.
Hopefully an Earth Tribe Yoga teacher will respond in time. It will be for
ultra beginners.
But even if no one responds from there I will hack the yoga and DIY
instruct together. No one can stop us now.
Max
fyi!

a really neat thing about linux these days - i don't know if this will
work on the pi but when i want to script something involving a USB webcam
or a USB serial port, instead of referring to it by /dev/ttyACM0 or
whatever, i look for
/dev/serial/by-id/usb-Keyspan__a_division_of_InnoSys_Inc._Keyspan_USA-19H-if00-port0
you can put that into your thing instead of /dev/ttyUSB0 or whatever, and
it will always work - no matter what order the serial ports come up in.
i mean not that you took my advice last time...

Apparently I am our landlord's new preferred liaison. He called my
phone at 10:45 tonight and complained at length about the common area.
Specifically, he said the pews need to go by the end of the month. He
says he never gave permission for them, and he's hated them from the
beginning. He also suggested they be donated to the Joshua Christian
Church in West Oakland which was apparently smashed up by a car last
week. He said if they're not gone by the end of the month he will
remove them himself, possibly by bludgeoning them into pieces and
carrying the pieces to a dumpster.
I did not say yes or no. It was very hard to get a word in edgewise,
but I repeated several times, "I cannot speak for sudoroom. I will
relay your message to the group. Thank you for letting us know."
For context, the common area is actually cleaner today than it's been
in almost two weeks. To be perfectly honest, the timing tells me that
he's been stewing in frustration for quite a while. I think seeing a
moderate improvement gave him some clarity in terms of what he wants.
Frankly we've abused his flexibility about the common area. The pews
do encourage people to act irresponsibly, to forget we are guests out
there, to neglect to clean up after events, to turn it into a garbage
dump. By evicting the pews he's saying the party's over, stay in the
area you're paying for, unless you want to pay for the rest of it. He
did offer to quote us on the full square footage of the common area,
if we want...
It didn't have to be this way. If it was just the pews, I think he'd
deal. But he sees them as a slippery slope, a gateway to an overall
sense of entitlement beyond what he owes us, and I can't say I'm
surprised.

hi everyone,
we are at the meeting and have been discussing the status of our various
door access mechanisms. as we were discussing them, we realized that we
were partly in a fog of unknowing. so this email is a request for
information on the status of our different mechanisms:
- door.sudoroom.org: FUNCTIONAL
- rfid: unfunctional this morning - unclear function now
- keypad: unfunctional this morning, functional this evening: WHY? =O
- buzzer: unfunctional this morning, functional after jordan logged in
and restarted the mouseread daemon.
for folks who are working on these systems, it would be great if you could
let the list know what the known issues are with these systems, where we're
at, and what work needs to be done. please consider this an open thread for
updates on the status of our access systems.
thanks!

- this also affects sudo radio as mixxx, our dj software, typically
connects to the music server and seems to not want to do

- access & membership
- proposal to use the following membership/access procedure:
- tell people to sign up to become members on our site:

- when people sign up, they should come to the space where a member will:
- check the results of the membership sign-up form to ensure that the

- the membership sign-up form results are on the last tab of our fiscal
solvency sheet!
- give them a code for door.sudoroom.org
- let them know that if there are any problems, that the code can be
revoked
- let them know about dues, the sliding scale, and different ways to
contribute (sudoroom.org, gittip, via check or cash in the dropbox (show
location of the dropbox) or during wednesday meetings).
- give them instructions on how to open and close the space.
- invite them to listservs and wednesday night meetings
- give them logins for wordpress site & wiki (not everyone knows how to
do this)
- Need to do:
- Give existing sudoers ability to add pw's for new people. Jordan is
working on adding commenting to the txt file that houses our list of pw's.
Once this is done,
- We currently have no way to track or report who pays, etc. Is this ok?
If not, we need solutions.
- If you want to work on membership management solutions, check out this

- A number of folks have signed up to be members but it's unclear
whether they have had any follow-up or come by the space. we've updated the

to let people know that they should come to the space, but should we
contact the folks who have already signed up?

Hey folks,
I've started a spreadsheet to list nearby (1 mile radius) community
organizations, schools, churches, non-profits etc to reach out to. Next
step would be to put together a flier of some sort that could list some of
the activities that happen in the space (eg TIL, Sudo Kids, Microcontroller
Hacking Night, Hacker Happy Hour, etc) and some of the ongoing projects
(Community Democracy Project, Oakland Wiki, the Mesh Network group, etc;).
If you have design skills and would be interested in helping with that,
please email me or reply to this thread!
Please add to the list as you wish, especially if you or someone you know
can serve as a point of contact for that org:

Hey ! A lot of noisebridge and sudoroom folks hang out at the DNA lounge death guild event Monday nights.
I spent a good deal of time talking about projects with folks there. There's also great wifi and a 24 hour pizza place next door.

Hi Folks,
I'm back from a brief hiatus and returning to sudo room with chips and wires tomorrow night for some good ole fashioned 8-bit tinkering. There have been a few projects going around involving solar power - it would be good to get a handle on this sun tracking thing once and for all, and a group is already in depth with some custom hardware but I think it would be fun to hack something together with car charger panels and servos. I will be working with Morten and Julio on a little project we call the garden sentry, which is basically a different take on the now more or less old hat closed-loop plant watering / aquaponics setup, with an emphasis on - you guessed it - being cheap. Beer machine testing will resume two weeks later since we're still waiting on some components to increase the heating power. Bonus round if time allows: testing out some of the solenoid valves that Steve donated. We probably won't be building a cryogenic fuel thrust vectoring lunar lander rocket engine with them as had been originally planned, but I have high hopes we can get within 1.5 orders of awesomeness magnitude.
I will have some extra chips on hand if you're just getting started - atmega328p, uln2003, 555 timers, etc.
Hope to see y'all there!

Hey all given an apparent discontinuation of BART service I thought it
might be useful to let people know I'll be driving thru Oakland and SF the
next couple of days, in particular between sudo room and noisebridge.
I'll be heading down to sudo room for a brief stop at some point in the
next couple of hours and then over to sf, I have room for a few if anyone
needs a lift into the city later this afternoon.
Also this seems like an epic opportunity for someone to throw together a
Fuck BART carpool web app, or connect BART to the Internet of Things so
that we can control it remotely.

Dear Sudo Room-
Attached please find the 7/2013 Statement. Thank you! There was a
disconcerting incident today where somebody sprayed graffiti on and around
the ADA toilet upstairs. If anybody has a lead on this or saw something
suspicious, please let us know, as we can't pick up that area on camera :-(.

The Gonorrhea Eradication Team is a citizen science project launched out of
sudo room:
http://www.sudoroom.org/wiki/Phage_therapy
We're a small group of hackers and scientists that are trying to crowdfund
our initial lab rental and supplies in order to get the research started.
The goal is, as the name states, to cure Gonorrhea using phage therapy.
This is important since Gonorrhea is becoming increasingly resistant to
existing antibiotics!
Much more info on our crowdfunding campaign website:
http://www.wepay.com/donations/gonorrhea-eradication-team
Hopefully we'll be able to transition from rented lab space to Counter
Culture Labs ( the upcoming east bay diybio space ) in a few months.
Stay excellent.
