Hello Sudoers! A friend alerted me to the availability of free pews! They
are made of dark mahogany. Asking Matt if Sudo Room needed some pews, he
said, "YES!" So the nice lady is holding them for us, but we need to act
fast (large numbers of calls and interest).
I would like to request 2 of them but the rest can go to my favorite hacker
space.
Truck please!
Cheers,
Ray
txt sam if you have a truck and can fetch these fine pews. 914.400.5604

Dear All,
I just wanted to confirm that we are indeed still meeting this Friday at
6pm if that still works for everyone. At the moment I'm still trying to get
us access to the Berkeley space that we discussed before for the possible
East Bay DIY Bio hacker space but no word yet. So we have a choice
1. Meet at a Cafe/Bar/Restaurant (possibly Saturn Cafe) in Berkeley at 6pm
2. Alternatively, we could meet back at Sudo room at 6pm just before the
hacker happy hour and talk for a while as people arrive until about
7/7.30pm?
My preference (for simplicity) would probably be Sudo Room
Let me and our fellow Biohacker members know if you have a preference?
Please also see the agenda below compiled by Ron:
1) How to build a self-sustaining community? What sorts of organization,
resources, people, physical requirements would there be to get a space off
the ground?
Who will be in the community and what are their goals?
How might membership work?
What are our self sustaining budget numbers?
How will the lease and other such legal obligations work?
How can we collaborate with biocurious and nextgen? Who can be our allies
to build this momentum?
Other topics related: legal, regulatory, fiscal requirements, organization,
volunteers, building momentum, lab rules
2) Projects.
Everyone loves talking about projects. Given some idea of what the
community needs, how can projects build that community?
Because it takes at least 6 months of focused experience to get up to speed
in actual biological hacking, team projects will probably be the mainstay
of the lab for a while.
Team projects should probably be focused and supported by vote, but how can
we gauge what is too ambitious for a first round?
For example:
- open benchtop*
- the bioprinter project is an experience to learn from
- bio Informatics support for the lab or diyBio
- open source bioreagent design.
3) Appendix: Lessons learned:
- Biologists involved in the core of the startup process have been pretty
useful.
- getting members up to speed can take months and they need mentorship to
get to a level of creative practice.
- projects build enthusiasm as well as get people experience
- classes are important
- the community is made of people all of whom are needed to build the
community successfully (e.g. members, volunteers, class attendees, board
members (or something like board members anyway).
* BTW - This is the gogofuge link I mentioned - really a niceified dremel
centrifuge.

All the best,
Ryan

Hey all,
Cyrus (suh-ROOS) here.
My day job is at Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/author/cyrus-farivar/) where I write about business, tech policy, privacy and surveillance.
I'm also the author of "The Internet of Elsewhere" (http://amzn.to/lVg5Cj) a book about the history and effects of the Internet in four countries around the world.
I also love Oakland, tacos and biking—the East Bay Express gave me a "Best Bike Tour" award back in 2010 for my "Tour de Taco." (http://bit.ly/ZszktY)
I also am active in radio, and have done lots of reporting for NPR and other public radio. I lived and worked for two years ('10-'12) in Germany, working for Deutsche Welle English (German intl public radio). I've also lived in France, Senegal, Australia and Switzerland. (French is my best foreign language, but I speak some German, Persian and Spanish too.)
I met Matt at the Techliminal party the other and am curious to meet the Sudoroom community. I came by the space today and worked for a little bit and am hoping to become a member.
I have a standing engagement on Wednesday nights but I'm hoping to come to a meeting sometime next month.
Cheers,
-C

Hi everyone,
Meet Kevin. He's a senior at Met West High School, where they do a senior
thesis project. Kevin is looking at the effects of the internet on young
people, and how to get them focused more productively.
If you'd like to be interviewed, let me know - we can pick up a time to
invite Kevin to the Sudo room and talk to a few people at once.
I know you have some opinions (and experience...) about this. :)
Here's his proposal summary:
My project idea is to help young people become aware and know what the
internet and technology are doing to the planet and to our brains. Not only
are young people, millennials, wasting their time on the internet with
social networking sties, but they don’t gain anything educational and
useful or for financial benefit while on these sites. One thing they are
losing is time on the internet for social networking and not accomplishing
work or homework with the same effort and competence. We should care
because it is controlling people and just making them spend most of their
time on the sites. Recent studies show that technology is changing how our
brain works; reading, concentration, contemplation and our capacity, which
are also losing the full abilities of the human brain. Since we depend on
technology so much, I want to make people aware of how our brain is being
impacted and find different ways that we can minimize our loss. I want to
tell them that they should use their brain power and time on something that
will help them in the future so they do not lose both of them during the
same time at a young age.

It's been on the local pad all along. I've just copied the contents to

luck keeping it up there...
Sorry I probably won't be there tonight. Still recovering from a bad

Could someone with the blank agenda for tonight's meeting possibly copy it

Thanks!

Yo sudosicles,
Sudoshroom has started shrooming today. We have a deal with Farleys and get
their awesome espresso grounds for free. This means that>>
1) right now we got around 3/4lbs of high quality grounds at sudoroom
leftovers. Come pick em up asap and use em in your garden/shrooming. This
wont be the last time we will have leftoer grounds.
2) sudoshroom won\t need grounds collected by ourselves space. We can still
keep collecting but personally Im unsure what it will be used for, because
for shrooming, the grounds we get from farleys are plentiful and with less
risk of contamination, more dry and easier to handle. The alternative to
collecting is composting in the bins mr Senate set up (good job Matt!),
which seems pretty fine too.
Make a great night,
Morten
Hey sudoers!
This email is to remind y'all that this Thursday, Feb 21st from 6:30-9pm we
will be holding our first CORE (Communities of Oakland Respond to
Emergencies) class at sudo room (which will actually be taking place in the
Public School's room as they're hosting a poetry reading that same
evening).
This is the first in a series of three classes offered by Oakland's First
Responders. This class will cover basics of self-reliance in the event of a
disaster or emergency that could take out power and other essential
infrastructure for up to weeks at a time. The CORE I class teaches students
how to prepare a family disaster plan, reduce common household hazards,
create emergency supply kits, and respond to a number of possible
emergencies, including earthquakes and fires.
To RSVP, please email me directly. The current RSVP list is here:

Hi Sudoers
A couple of things. I didn't get much of a response for screening *The
Pirate Bay film* and as Jenny pointed out Tuesdays are super busy. How does
this *Friday 2/22 *work for people? There are no conflicts i can see on
either the Sudo calendar or the Public school.
Also i wanted to know that i've acquired a *first aid kit for Sudoroom* so
we can take it off the wish list. Ill bring it in later in the week.
I am also looking for folks interested in *developing The Public
School *website.
There are a lot of improvements to be made and there is a test server
already running. The site runs on Drupal. So if any dev types have some
extra time or interest i can get you access or we could do a hackathon to
shore up the site.
Best,
Marty

I wasn't able to attend the Javascript meetup this evening but I would like
to reach out to anybody who is attending these meetings and possibly
interact online outside of the meetings IE share code, ideas, projects and
built a rapport. I have a project I'm doing for people interested in audio
& Javascript here http://interactiveaudio.wikiaudio.org . It's a
(slow-moving) tutorial series & I'm still learning and code every day. If I
can contribute anything to sudo room in the way of a knowledge base let me
know. I have extensive knowledge of audio as well as an increasing
understanding of *web audio*. Please reach out 510 816 2816.
I'm actually curious if sudo room has a projector that can be hooked up to
a computer in the main room to do presentations. I would like to possibly
do a small one on web audio as well as suggest a few on more complicated
concepts like closures and design patterns.
For anyone interested the best way to learn Javascript online (in my
opinion) that I've found thus far is this

I just caught wind of this little project based around participatory
organizations and meant to facilitate policy-driven decision making:
https://github.com/smari/wasa2il
Presentation:
https://github.com/smari/wasa2il/blob/master/doc/wasa2il_introduction.odp?r…
Pretty cool, and something sudoroom might benefit from, given our
diligence in making decisions according to the bylaws we've set forth.
Sometimes these types of tools are too rigid and get in the way of the
in-person decision making process, but this one looks pretty flexible.
Worth playing around with at the very least.

It's time for another monthly meet-up for those involved in
anti-censorship, anti-surveillance, transparency and other hacktivism
tools: Technoactivism Third Mondays returns to Noisebridge, President's
Day, 2013-02-18, from 6PM - 7.30PM.
This week, we'll have a Q&A with roving Al Jazeera correspondent,
Melissa Chan. Chan has the unique honor of being both targetted for
spear-phishing malware when working in Beijing, and being used as the
fake source of malware against Bahraini activists when working in the
Middle-East. She's currently a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford,
where she is working on developing an online toolkit for journalists to
protect their computers against hackers and safeguard communications
with sources.
Chat with Chan about the realities of digital surveillance around the
world, announce your current project or idea, meet with other hackers
and activists, working on protective tools, or just have some appetizers
before finding a good place to eat dinner with your old and new friends.
Reply to this mail to RSVP, offers of lightning talks, or to arrange
consignment deliveries of vegan cupcakes.
Noisebridge is at 2169 Mission St: http://nburl.net/gethere

Hi All,
Yesterday a few of you brought up a great point, the "Open Source Desktop
Bioengineering lab" is a bit of a mouthful for a project name. Do any of
you have creative ideas for a shorter, snappier name?
I thought it made sense to open source the name just like we're open
sourcing the project :)
All the best,
Ryan

Hi everyone,
This Saturday's Today I Learned will be starting a little bit late (4PM)
and will feature the talents of Morten and Sam on the topics of "Livelihood
Hacking AND Teaching Techniques Collaborative Workshop"
Morten will be presenting *Livelihood Hacking:*
- Your biggest regular/monthly expense is likely rent followed by food,
which also happen to cover some of the more basic needs. Significantly
reducing the financial costs of these significantly increases potential
ways to live ones life. Morten lives comfortably for $500 a month and will
talk a bit about how that looks like, throw some ideas for how it might be
replicated in your context, and together we will further explore this topic
of livelihood hacking in a workshop setting.
Afterwards, Sam will be presenting *Techniques Collaborative Workshop*
- This will be about how to be a better teacher, as well as how to
expand the TIL program and teach material outside of our collective comfort
zone. We will also aim to create a sudo wiki entry on this material. It'll
be hosted as a potluck.
And as always, many slots for future Today I Learned sessions are
available! Please sign up here:
