Hi, all.
Just wanted to let everyone know that there was a hiccup with the
sudoroom mailing lists that caused most (all?) messages since around May
31 to get stuck waiting to be sent out. I've cleared the blockage, so
apologies for the small avalance of emails you've just received / are
about to receive.
I'll be keeping an eye on things, but please send me a direct email if
you try to post to a sudoroom.org email list and it doesn't seem to go
out in a timely manner (~15 minutes or so).

Hi Sudoers:
Here’s some things we might do at Sudoroom tonight:
-We have yet another big flat screen TV to work on, a TCL 55C807
Apparently this is a TCL C807 series: on providing power it looks like
the panel is working but there’s no video signal except for a patterned
horizontal white stripe.
Can someone research what might be wrong with it?
It’d be great to get at least one of these big displays working so we
can telepresence people in to sudoroom, and to build out a large flat
screen display practise more generally.
-Jonathan from Castro Valley High School will be working on converting a
couple of Chromebooks I gave them a while back. I also added a bunch of
additional Chromebooks to the cabinet.
-We’re going to work on purging some of the laptops in the 2nd cabinet
in the aisle alongside CCL) and stage them to be e-wasted: can someone
do an e-waste run soon?
See you later, -Peter
Hi everyone,
I am a Sudo Room member who has been volunteering a lot in admin work for
the last year, and am at least the sudo room president in name. But also
I'm on the board for Omni Commons. Omni Commons is still fiscally
sponsoring Sudo Room, since Sudo Room isn't yet ready to act as a
nonprofit.
The planned update to the fiscal sponsorship agreement between Omni Commons
and Sudo Room (and the other groups sponsored by Omni) has been decided to
go into effect starting June 1st.
- The agreed on fee was 8% of total receipts. Here is the document
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JeImeQK0ugbb7Ewys5H9mufxyX_NFikeoVr_Rnm…
)
- The agreement needed to be updated after the building sale because
Omni Common's nonprofit no longer has any income otherwise --- before
"fiscal sponsorship fees" were rolled into each sponsored project's rent.
Now that Omni no longer owns the building/collects rent, it instead will
collect funds through fiscal sponsorship fees.
- Funds are needed since Omni Commons still has some debts, and has been
paying for Sudo's insurance since the building sale. 8% was chosen as a
comparable rate to most organizations providing fiscal sponsorship.
Also, since Sudo Room and Free Store have not been making any contributions
to the Omni Commons nonprofit, me/Omni's board is also asking if Sudo Room
can contribute towards insurance payments since September 2024. I haven't
done the accounting on this yet, and we are also waiting to get another
insurance refund which will change the amount. I know Sudo Room doesn't
have a lot of money coming in so we are more seeking extra donations for
this.
Tldr: Sudo Room, at least while sponsored by Omni, will need to start
keeping track of how much it makes in donations and member fees, and then
pay 8% of that back to Omni. Sudo Room is still on the Omni board, so it
can join the Omni delegate/board meeting to discuss more! The next one is
on June 12th.

Subject: [sudo-info] Screening at Gray Area (SF), June 15th, 7-9 pm; in person/virtually
To whom it may concern,
my name is Anastasia, I'm an art historian and a curator. Reaching out, I would like to share information about the forthcoming screening focused on early telepresence and invite you to join in person or virtually.
We are also open to collaboration of any kind: adding the event to your newsletter, listings, etc. Please let me know if it resonates and what the next steps might be. Hope to (e-)see you soon!
"Electronic Cafe International (1989-2000): Virtual Collaboration and Telepresence Before the Web"
at Gray Area on June 15th, virtually and in person.
About:
Artists Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz once envisioned telecommunication networks and information commons – what we now call videoconferencing and the World Wide Web – as a liberating force for communities, fostering creativity and open dialogue beyond the constraints of time and space. In a conversation inspired by the legacy of Electronic Cafe International, we will explore the evolution of telepresence (from the 1970s onwards) in connection to contemporary socio-political challenges, reflecting on the role of artivism in today’s world.
Time: June 15th, 7-9 pm PDT
Location:
*
in person at 2665 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA
*
virtually: Zoom link w/ticket RSVP.

This message is for Peter Mui, apologies for spamming the group with
a message for a specific person, but I don't have their contact details yet.
Hi Peter,
This is Patrick Clawson, we met at last week's Tuesday night meeting and
you gave me the minimac to get up and running with OCLP. I was reading up
on it and one of the draw backs to OCLP is that future upgrades might break
the install, requiring another run at it with the OCLP installer. I was
reading that non-MacOS installs such as linux are also possible and might
not require as many interventions to keep running. I was wondering if you
had a specific use in mind for that mac that having macOS running on it is
desired, or if the idea is to just get it up and running, OS agnostic?
again, apologies for messaging the group as a whole if that goes against
the general mailing list etiquette, and I'm happy to take this conversation
to a separate email thread if you'd like to send me an email address to use.

Looks like it's gonna be a whopper of a good conference coming up.

I can see lots of great bay area org attendees already signed up.
Wondering if/how Sudoers might add to the synergy? I may be out of town
(feeling FOMO already).

Subject: [sudo-info] We'd love to hold a generative-art vibe coding workshop with you
Hi there!
Two friends and I are interested in holding a short creative workshop (1–3
hours) dedicated to making generative art with “vibe coding” by using free
AI tools.
The workshop would be like a guided jam session for creativity with p5.js
and AI: no coding experience required, just curiosity and a laptop. But
coders will also appreciate it, and those that don't code will learn some
coding in the process. We'll help participants make animated visuals and
explore how simple AI prompts can create surprisingly beautiful results.
It's more about the vibe and self-expression than technical
perfection—ideal for artists, beginners, and anyone who likes to experiment
and play.
Timing is flexible. We'd love to do this before May 23 if possible, but if
not, we're open to doing it later too.
Yesterday I saw a presentation by this fellow. He is giving away a lot usd corportate laptop.
He developed a nix config to get a chromebook type exsperence. It's geared towards nontechnical people.
It autoupdates. He uses flathub for the software store.

Hi Sudoers:
Chromebook Rescue is on the Berkeley Unified School District Board
Meeting agenda for approval Wednesday night; it's been years to get to
this point:
https://simbli.eboardsolutions.com/SB_Meetings/ViewMeeting.aspx?S=36030527&…
(For background on Chromebook Rescue see http://bit.ly/cbsave)
Chromebook Rescue -- teaching people how to convert Chromebooks and
redistributing converted Chromebooks throughout the community -- is one
of Sudo Room's/Fixit Clinic's Good Works Community Outreach Projects
that coveys digital literacy, digital equity, and digital inclusion. We
should soon have lots of Chromebooks to work with so all interested
parties are welcome to join the fun.
Sudoers have been converting Chromebooks regularly on Mondays at Women /
Non-Binary Hack & Do Whatever Night and anyone else is welcome to do
this then or at other times as well. Not sure where to start? Convert a
Chromebook for yourself to play with (lots of us can help you) and
ponder how our communities might be different with essentially unlimited
and free laptops available to anyone who can use one.
Sincerely, -Peter
P.S.: On a related note: Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 in
October and Fixit Clinic is part of a global initiative to convert
Windows 10 devices to alternative OSes too. -p
