On Dec. 14th the FCC [1] (Federal Communication Commission) is preparing
to dismantle net neutrality [2] which prevents the huge internet service
providers' oligopoly from unfairly discriminating against websites it
doesn't like and would help lead to the privatization &
commercialization of the internet.
But the grassroots is fighting back! Folks are organizing protests at
Verizon stores locations around the country. Verizon [3], in particular,
will make bigly profits from the destruction of net neutrality. In the
Oakland-Berkeley area there are 3 Verizon locations, and as of yet,
apparently no one is organizing [4] any actions there. We are going to
be the laughing stock of the national movement.
If you can be a contract for one of these Verizon protests, just go to
verizonprotests.com [5] and enter your contact info [6] for the location
that you pick! (The details are at the web site). The protests are
taking place on (or before) December 7th, so please help out with this
just as soon as you can!
Me, I'm useless, the 7th is my first wife's birthday (she was born on
the 25th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day) and she wants me to take her
to Calistoga to view the smoking ruins. And the way I look, I better
stick with the partner I have.
Thanks for all you do,
Ed & the rump of Occupy Oakland

it seems that the big TV that's screwed to the balcony has stopped working.
It's plugged into live AC but the power doesn't come on even when i press the
power button.
i'm guessing that this is because it's dead. i've tried to fix TVs like this
before and it's just too many screws, in addition to hunting down a new
transistor or whatever... so it's unlikely to happen.
anyway if anyone feels like doing anything about it, go ahead and double-check
that the AC power is really getting to it (although i'm pretty sure i checked)
and then probably you'll have to take it down from the wall. Then you can see
if it blew a fuse, and then see what happens if you put another fuse in (it
will blow it again) and then see if you can figure out what's wrong - maybe
it's just a bad capacitor! but it's probably a lot more.
and then it can go in the e-waste pile and Cere can disassemble it further to
see what's inside.
and then we can take one of those TVs from under the stairs and put it up
instead.

Hi,
Looking for someone to help me for a few hours - heavy lifter and
careful - to organize tools, move heavy equipment, etc., in a warehouse
in Emeryville next to home depot (dogtown studios).
I estimate it may take three or four hours - during an evening (or two)
starting about 6pm, since I can only be there after work - either today,
tomorrow, or next week (not sure I can be available during the weekend)
- need to get it done sooner than later -
I think two people will be better than one. $22/hour
If you are interested, send me a text, or email.

As an OMNI collective we are responsible for some of the cleaning that
needs to happen. Phil from Food Not Bombs has done an immense amount of
cleaning - we should take on some of the burden.
OMNI now has official cleaning days: the third Saturday from 12 to 3pm and
last Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30pm. The next one is Wed. 11/29
Alternatively we can come any time and do a task on the checklists that
have been put up around the commons and sign off on it.

hi all,
a reminder that today is our first all Omni cleaning day! laura & I have
made the checklists, and laminated copies will be up all over the Omni, for
each space to be cleaned.
while people are *highly* encouraged to come clean together, please feel
free to mark on the checklists what you do at your/your collective's own
convenience. & please see the previous email about when these will
regularly be.
see you in a shinier Omni soon,
julian

hello all,
at the delegates meeting laura & i signed up to work on two things: put
together a checklist of all the cleaning tasks for each subspace of the
omni; schedule 1 weekday evening and 1 weekend day that folks omni-wide can
get together to get the cleaning done.
we’re done with the second! for the next few months, we’ll be test driving
every third Saturday from 12pm-3pm

and the last Wednesdays from 5:30pm-8:30pm

many delegates said they may not be able to send folx to a regular
day—that’s okay! as many of the same also said, “we’d love a checklist,
though.” we’re almost done with it—we’re going to finish it next week,
after which you’ll hear from us again. once their done, they’ll get posted
in everyroom, and if you do stuff on your own you’ll be able to mark when.
see you next time space cowfolx,

Looping in sudo-discuss - is anyone available to help load Ed's and Ian's
trucks tomorrow afternoon for a dump run? Everything is all tee'd up in the
Entrance Hall on or in front of the stage - there are two smaller labelled
piles for e-waste and CiviCorps (our recycling company will pick up
itemized e-waste) - everything else is dumprun.
I unfortunately can't be there until 3pm...

I'm proud to announce that MeshPoint has become one of the 12
finalists of The Hackaday Prize 2017. We’re competing for first place
in two categories: Best Product and as best project overall.
Thanks to the effort of MeshPoint team members, the collaborative
project has gotten another confirmation that we are working on
technology that’s going to make a significant impact on the IT
industry and the humanitarian innovation sector. In the past months,
we have been working hard to perfect our device’s efficiency,
performance and appliance.
Out of the 12 chosen finalists, 5 are selected to win 5,000 up to
50,000 USD. Honestly, just being selected as one of the best by
leading IT experts, engineers, entrepreneurs and professors from
reputable American universities (such as MIT) is great motivation and
a clear message to our team that we’re on the right track.
The announcement will be made on the Hackaday Superconference 2017,
the largest international conference dedicated to open source hardware
projects and hardware development.
The conference starts on Saturday, 11th of November. The announcements
will be made on: Saturday, 11th of November at 18:30 California time
(Sunday 03:30 CET)
You can follow the event live on the Hackaday Youtube channel or on
the Hackaday Facebook page.
Ryan Jason Martin has been safe-space banned from sudo room, and thus from
the Omni Commons.
The following is the consensus decision from last night's sudo room meeting:
"The sudoroom community stands by our existing safe space ban of Ryan
Martin for reasons of prolonged intimidation and harassment. We will seek
more information, but prioritize supporting our long-time community
members. The ban will continue unless it's overturned by a member vote at a
future sudoroom meeting."
I currently do not have any photo to share but Ryan has been informed of
this decision and I have no reason to believe that he will attempt to gain
access to the Omni in the future.

Some issues have been brought up relating to safe space that deserve our
attention.
If you are a sudo room member it would be great if you could show up this
Wednesday at 7 pm for a meeting or be available online.
Normally we'd deal with these things on the second Wednesday of the month
but I don't think it's fair for anyone involved to drag out a safe space
issue if we can avoid it.

Hi sudoers!
A documentary crew will be at Counter Culture Labs on Sunday October 29th
starting at 2 pm, shooting video until around 5 pm.
We'd really appreciate it if people could be quiet during that time :)
We will ensure that no sudo folk get into the video unless we get their
consent.
Thanks in advance!

Hey omninoms,
I've gotten backlogged on work this past week and apologize for the urgency
of this email. Tonight or tomorrow I'll be sending along two proposals that
require relatively rapid response.
Unfortunately, I'm still waiting back on final feedback from Jesse (our
lawyer) and a written proposal from The Village, but I wanted to send
something out tonight so that it's on folks' radar:
1) Fiscally sponsoring (grant model) a crowdfunding campaign that Daniel
launched on October 7th to raise funds for a school in Guatemala that was
devastated by a tropical storm:
https://www.youcaring.com/escuelaoficialbarriochajsaquil-974517
** Deadline to attach a bank account is October 22nd, but we may be able to
retroactively reroute funds sent to a personal bank account.*
2) Fiscally sponsoring (project model, possible application for Omni
membership) The Village, which has successfully pressured the City of
Oakland to declare a Shelter Crisis Ordinance and agree to hand over some
city-owned land parcels for them to build viable villages for the homeless
and provide wraparound support services.
** Deadline to provide proof of fiscal sponsorship and associated General
Liability insurance is October 24th.*
There are of course more detailed aspects to each of these proposals, but
they remain pending for the time being - our shared deadline is tomorrow
before the Delegate's Meeting. In terms of expediting these important
projects, we could figure out a way to do this fairly that might include 1)
provisional fiscal sponsorship (eg, 1-3 months), 2) abstentions from
collectives that have consensus processes but would likely not object, and
3) utilizing old-omni's 501c3 to sponsor The Village, which has the same
board as omni but no assets that could be put into jeopardy.
I will post each proposal as a separate post to this list (I've cc'd sudo
and all are encouraged to forward to their collectives) sometime over the
next 24 hours.

i'm looking for a small low-power computer with at least two ethernet ports.
gigabit would be preferred although i wouldn't turn down an older one since I
have nothing at this point. I want to make a router for my house, to go
between the comcast bullshit and my internal network.
just a raw motherboard would be fine but with a case is fine too.
i should mention that i want something that doesn't take unnecessary power, and
ideally i'll be powering it from 12vdc using a little converter like this:

thank you
