Ah, OK. I've seen GFIs seem to do that, but there may well have been
something else involved. That said, it should still be confirmed that
there's a GFI on that circuit. In fact, given the unknown wiring
conditions in the kitchen area I would suggest a GFI breaker in the panel
even if there is one visible in the kitchen.

They protect against ground faults (an imbalance of the current in the hot
and neutral wires).
If there are too many devices plugged into a GFCI, and none of them are
defective, then it is expected that the circuit breaker would trip first.
