Since Kickstarter has time limits, seems to me the way to do this is to
put up a website with project details, and then stir up publicity
directed toward the website, before going on Kickstarter.
The skill-sets and cultural variables don't often overlap between
geekdom and promotional activity. So there's probably room for
something like a promotional agency that can take on the task of getting
the word out about projects.
Major PR agencies have extensive direct personal contact with
journalists. Journalists in certain areas (business, sci & tech,
medicine, entertainment, etc.) rely heavily on press releases from PR
agencies, for leads and stories. (For example all the news you might
have seen today about the large asteroid fly-by this afternoon, was
probably the result of NASA sending out press releases.)

I've seen several campaigns fail miserably because the folks weren't
able to get the word out well enough.

Imagine what the mesh project or sudo radio could do with $10,000.
I know that lots of money does not = great project, but i would
encourage some of the projects out there to think in terms of what
they want to do (dream big), instead of what they can do now by
scraping together parts on with a non existent budget.

I've seen some pretty obnoxo bits come across these tubes,

Most of that seems to me to be psychological

Generally the sting wears off after a few days and then

this stuff needs to be indexed & searchable is more than a
little narcissistic: to quote someone I was hanging out
with last night, are we really so important?)
Knowing the person at the other end of the wire, and being
able to translate their writing into their spoken voice,
makes many of those issues disappear. In my mind's ear I
hear you telling sheep jokes. They're not bad, for sheep
jokes;-)
OK, so who's going to launch a Kickstarter to build
another giant gay sheep?
Or how'bout a couple of giant lesbian sheep? With audio
chips & speakers, so they can say to each other,
"Baaa-aaa-aaa, I love ewe!" and "Baa-aa-aaa, I love ewe
too!"
