Ah that's because the headphones only have audio input, no mic. This fiasco
is an attempt to attach a cable with a built-in microphone to the
headphones. So the adapter required only needs to pass audio to the
headphones.
Modularity is a lie when no one even makes adapters for the plug... Mini
XLR... ugh...

After looking at Jake's suggestion, I got a new idea, I ordered the only
adapter I could find with the right plugs

and if it turns out the audio really is reversed then I'll bring it in to
crack open and rewire it.

I don't know about single-ended or balanced but this will go into a
laptop's 3.5mm headphone output port
