MBA is excited to announce our first ever youth internship! Young people released from the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center (ACJJC) and from schools in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) will now have the unique opportunity to receive in-depth mindfulness training, tutoring in basic mentoring skills, and education in the mental and behavioral health fields, broadly defined. The program’s inspiration is drawn from a young man who recently contacted MBA once released from the ACJJC, looking to deepen his practice and skills learned while incarcerated. Executive Director Sam Himelstein donated $400 to underwrite this first internship. Will you underwrite the next one? Our interns will receive a $400 stipend for approximately 50 hours of internship over the course of a semester. The East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC), MBA’s partner at Dewey Academy (one of our OUSD sites), has generously awarded funding for 3 additional MBA interns from Dewey Academy. MBA hopes to build a cohort of a minimum of 8 interns for the 2013-2014 school year. We already have four spots funded; donate today to fund the other four interns! One Daylong Training Remaining - Sign Up Today "Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment for High-Risk Adolescents", Sunday October 13, 2013 Only one more daylong training left to go this Fall, so don’t sleep on it! “Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment for High-Risk Adolescents” is a must for any teacher, clinician, or mentor who works with young people who use drugs and for anyone interested in applying mindfulness philosophy and techniques to help deal with substance use. In this training you’ll learn the underlying principles of using a mindfulness-based model to work with young people, actual group curriculum activities that you can use with the young people you work with, and how to effectively apply mindfulness to this field. MBA is in the process of planning its second set of summer retreats for 2014, but we can’t do it without you. Help us double, or even triple the size of the retreat so more youth can benefit from this comprehensive program that offers skills for emotion management, stress reduction, and nature appreciation for urban youth that rarely, if ever, get access to the great outdoors.
