An LED chipset reference. Hol and I used LPD8806 strips for our project
last year. They're better but more expensive. The cheaper WS2812b strips
are harder to control because they require very precise signal timing which
means writing assembly or using special hardware.

Open Pixel Control is a very simple MIDI-like specification for sending
pixels around (including over the network). This lets you decouple driving
the LEDs (via Arduino, say) from generating the content (which is best done
on a faster device like a laptop). We'd want something like this so
visiting hackers could easily send content to the floor over the network
without having to reprogram an Arduino. Also includes an OpenGL simulator
for previewing your patterns. OPC is used by quite a few big Burning Man
LED projects.
