there are already, i believe, lightbulbs and gels down there, and the wires are all run.. i think all we need are a couple of relay boards (which i have) and a controller to sequence the lights. And if the lightbulbs burn out i have a huge box of replacements (if they're normal lightbulbs) i think it would be really expensive to replace all that light with LEDs and i would not ask for sudo or omni to put community money toward that if we can just play with the free stuff that's already in there. also, last i bought addressible LED tape it was more like $60 per meter, for the sparse stuff. If you think it's cheaper let's have links.. still, it's hard to beat free. $3/meter is hecka cheap! Wow. Link dump follows. An LED chipset reference. Hol and I used LPD8806 strips for our project last year. They're better but more expensive. The cheaper WS2812b strips are harder to control because they require very precise signal timing which means writing assembly or using special hardware. https://github.com/FastLED/FastLED/wiki/Chipset-reference Open Pixel Control is a very simple MIDI-like specification for sending pixels around (including over the network). This lets you decouple driving the LEDs (via Arduino, say) from generating the content (which is best done on a faster device like a laptop). We'd want something like this so visiting hackers could easily send content to the floor over the network without having to reprogram an Arduino. Also includes an OpenGL simulator for previewing your patterns.
