With the help of a couple of other sudoers (thanks Jake and Alex!) I've
been trying to fix it, but the issue is deeper than expected. I'm not
giving up though, so it's an ongoing project.
The VFDs main bridge rectifier had a short and a trace melted. It was fixed
and the VFD now powers on yet it appears that the VFD is either not
reporting back to the main controller board or is reporting an error. The
next step is monitoring that communication.
If anyone has deep knowledge of Eppendorf / Hanning VFDs or can get their
hands on the service manual for this thing then I'd love some help.

it did end up getting fixed 100% !!! we should put together a blog post or
something about the whole process
