Tonight's another Words of Resistence radical poetry reading!
It's "A night of words to explore and destroy our relationship with
technology!" I know I totally disagree with that, and that a lot of the
people who organize and go to this event have a collectively more nuanced
perspective than this (in part because of rumors I've been spreading to
them about radical technology communities like Sudo Room). I want to see
more nuanced conversation and intersection of radical communities, so I'm
going to be showing Oakland Wiki to some of these folks for the first time
and reciting a few specially-selected articles on the intersection of
gentrification/displacement with technology, and technology with activism.
Come on out!

You're probably aware that most "life-hacking" involves ways of saving
money. What compensation can our "life hackers" expect from this major
cable network (as you put it)?
You may be familiar with our community's values about open data,
privacy and intellectual property. Can we assume that the footage and
data will be licensed as public domain, creative commons, or similarly
shared as a free asset for the people?

Subject: [sudo-info] MAJOR CABLE NETWORK SEEKS HACKER SPACES FOR NEW SERIES
To: info(a)sudoroom.org
Hello!
My name is Liz Phelps, and I'm a Casting Associate at Leftfield
Pictures in New York City. We're a full-scale television production
company responsible for programming such as Pawn Stars and American
Restoration on The History Channel, Oddities on the Science Channel,
and a host of other shows for networks including The Discovery
Channel, Bravo, and A&E.
I'm reaching out to you because we're in the process of developing a
new series about "Life Hacking" for a major cable network.
Specifically, we're seeking Hacker Spaces as well as individuals who
pride themselves on finding unique, technical tricks for managing
day-to-day life.
If anyone at your space considers themselves a "Life Hack Aficionado"
(i.e. someone excellent at finding creative solutions for dealing with
our modern world) we'd love to hear from them!
Please feel free to reach me at 212-564-2607 x2365 for more
information about the project. Similarly, if you know of any other
folks who might fit this description, it would be great if you could
share this information and encourage them to reach out.
Due to the fast-paced nature of TV Production, things are moving very
quickly on our end -- so if you are interested in learning more
information please be in touch very soon : )
I look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks,
Liz

I added this to our meeting agenda on a whim. Most of the discussion
was me being bitter about their co-option of language. Hol had the
quote of the night: "they're ctrl-v-ing the hell out of us", referring
to the Kopimist cut-and-paste mantra.
I'd always been skeptical of them. Their fundraiser got 100k in one
night, and they charge $400/month for their co-working space. They
have paid positions, and their leadership appears hierarchical and
opaque. For example, there is no mailing list, only a glitzy
"newsletter". While I was inspired by their hosting Oakland Data Day,
I felt most of the value came from volunteer attendees. In other
words, where is that money going?
This ridiculous video didn't help me take the "impact hub" concept
seriously: http://vimeo.com/35373512
Put simply, Sudoroom is a grassroots organization and always will be.
Our ultimate goal is to serve our communities. I believe the HUB's
ultimate goal is to extract rent from our communities.
After reading on Oakland Wiki yesterday that their building is owned
by Signature, the same developers behind Brooklyn Basin, I believe all
hypothetical good faith I had in that project has vanished. It's
marketing, marketing, marketing. You could argue the HUB is not their
landlord, but then why are they naming their new building complex "The
Hive"? It turns out this "hive" also includes the 5 story condo
building a block from Sudo that has literally had a "now selling" sign
since we moved in two years ago. This is absolutely a collaboration
between speculators and gentrifiers in my mind, and I think it is
extremely gross and fucked up.
To be honest, I think we'd be very wise as an organization to
explicitly distance ourselves from these kinds of projects.

I have no problem being Banned out of the Sudo Room.
This is Because I have undergone a sever economic depression that has left of my liberalist plans in queue.
Since I am unable to launch a political platform to present my liberation, as a leader of a movement beyond precedent, I rather wait until I can get my career back in track, save enough resources, open a few businesses, and do such.
I am willing to do whatever it takes to make my dreams come true.
I believe this ban is about me hanging on the skinny rope of my impoverished persona FOR TOO LONG.
I have never really done anything for the Sudo Room. Except for scrap some e-waste. But I always eat, drink, converse, make friends, make art, bring friends, use & work on computers. And I am very thankful to had such experiences in my life.
This is not a good bye, just a "see ya later". I am really motivated to turn my act around, make some money, and put it where my dreams are living, dying perhaps, existing in vacuum, underground, isolated.
At this point I don't care to defend my self against Eliot anymore. Making Marc Juul, and Yardena feel threatened is definitively past my original intentions. Like I said, the environment is turning me into a person I don't want to be. I opened a can of worms with Eliot, and I end up receiving all of its composite matter first hand. I do not ever want to experience that ever again in my life. My friend told me not to. And I did. It's my fault, but everything happens for a reason.
When random Reasons are seen as holly water in the pouring rain,
One can save the water for the dry weather, and be thankful,
For something good came out a random fault.
Who makes the clouds go round?
BE SAFE.
I hope to see some awesome proposals from people who participate in
these events! :)
thanks
Hilary

Starting April 5, Ace Monster Toys Hackerspace in Oakland is pleased to
host a month of design courses and workshops with Régis Lemberthe of
A&Ré Design.
Originally trained as an industrial designer, Régis graduated with his
Master's Degree in Humanitarian Design And Sustainable Living before
moving to Berlin and getting involved in the local maker community. He
now presents several different workshops there, in parallel with his
activities as part of A&Ré Design Studio.
From his description of the Design Tour (http://2014.design-tour.org):
"One of the most appropriate and exciting answers to mass production and
consumption, the maker movement has in the last years gained
considerable recognition. Fab labs and hacker spaces are being created
in every major city, offering those familiar with low-scale productions
techniques access to adequate machinery, as well as training for
everyone else. Skill sharing in fab labs is based on the know-how and
experience of artists, designers, makers, programmers and hackers
committed to making production accessible to all. Yet, while some
techniques are widely spread, others sadly remain more confidential.
After a few years spent facilitating events at Betahaus Berlin, French
designer Régis Lemberthe goes on tour - a series of craft workshops and
social+collaborative design courses hosted in maker spaces of various
different cities - lasting for a month, wherever interest and facilities
are. It has started in 2013 in Betahaus Berlin and will continue in
early 2014 in the US, Canada and London before proceeding towards
south-east Asia. "
