i'm reading the wiki page but i don't see how to set up a static IP address https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Network i see that static IP addresses are below .42.50 can i just set up something to take that address and it will be fine? I don't have to set it up somewhere else? also.. i noticed that none of the stuff in the internet factory upstairs is labeled - it's just wires going here and there that you have to follow. is anyone planning on labeling that stuff? thanks -jake

Replacing Sudo/CCL skylights next week

John the landlord just came through Sudo & CCL with a couple roofing contractors. He is going to pay to replace all the skylights in CCL & Sudo next week. We have six. They expect to replace two per day on Tuesday (23), Wednesday (24) and Thursday (25), moving from north to south. Work may extend into Friday. They are requesting that we clear the areas underneath so they can lay tarps and avoid death/destruction/mayhem. So that means: On Tuesday, CCL should push stuff towards Sudo On Wednesday, CCL & Sudo should clear stuff from the middle On Thursday, Sudo should push stuff towards CCL We don't have to move everything, they can lay tarps over things and figure out how to work around, but we will certainly want to move some stuff. The new skylights won't be bubbles, but will be flat safety glass. A contractor told me "a person could walk on one". So this will be great once we get roof access. Also if we ever see rain again. Sorry for cross-posting to so many lists. Please remove lists from your reply as necessary. :)

robot reading a file from disk - serial conversation eavesdropping

the robot has an external disk drive which is connected to it with a 25-pin serial cable. The disk drive unit is a computer in itself, with a lot of functionality. It boots up in "ERC MODE" meaning it's ready to talk to the YASNAC ERC, our robot control computer. i spied on the conversation between the robot and the disk drive while the robot loaded a file. I saved the conversation using the salae logic program: https://www.saleae.com/downloads if you run this program you can open the save file i saved: http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/floppy-loadafile.logicdata you will see that the format matches closely that which is described by the communications manual: http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/479236-17-Communications.pdf the baud rate is 4800 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, EVEN parity. it's connected to the 3d printer computer if you want to write a program to pretend to be a disk drive. then we can send it programs without having to use ancient floppy diskettes. to talk to it from that computer (whose IP address is .42.8) just run a script called "robot" in ~sudodesk/bin/robot it calls screen /dev/ttyS0 4800,parenb,-parodd (that's how you get even parity with screen) when i open that terminal, and then go to the floppy menu from the robot, it sends the following (? means unprintable character): ENQ?ENQ?ENQ?CAN+?CAN+?CAN+?EOT? which means, probably; HEY ARE YOU THERE? HEY ARE YOU THERE? HEY ARE YOU THERE? NEVER MIND. NEVER MIND. NEVER MIND. I'M HANGING UP NOW. see if you can get the robot to load a file from an imaginary disk drive. -jake

In years past this support has included a commissioned print edition to benefit a particular cause or organization. Today the Artist as Activist program is comprised of three distinct grant opportunities: Artist as Activist Fellows: artists and legally established art collectives with a demonstrated commitment to applying their creative work to the public sphere will receive up to $100,000 over two years, along with a suite of value-added support. Fellows will be selected through an open call for proposals. Artist as Activist Travel & Research Grants: a separate pool of funds has been reserved for similar artists seeking support (ranging from $2,500 to $10,000) to travel or conduct research related to this aspect of their work. Volunteers needed tommorrow (Wednesday) morning!

Still trying to achieve fire safety & ADA accessibility by Saturday. Lots of things happening tomorrow morning. We need: Someone who can drive a U-haul full of waste to the following places: * hazardous waste * e-waste * recycling * solid waste We can tell you where to go. The truck needs to be returned by 12:30pm. You'll probably need to start by 8am. Someone to help the wheelchair lift installer starting around 9am - simple stuff like holding and fetching tools. And as many people as we can for spare hands during bathroom construction. Thanks so much!!

robot programming format deciphered

so I was able to use a primitive magnetic encoding sequencer to read robot programs from a flat magnetic tape. We had some antique (literally 25 years old) diskettes in the computer history museum, and I fed one to the robot, and then "saved" all the programs written so far to the "diskette" then, i used a mechanical diskette-reader for a desktop computer (which needed lubrication on its rusty motors and slides and quite a bit of fiddling to work) to read this magnetic tape "diskette" the filesytem format is nothing recognized by 'mount' so i was forced to simply dd the binary of the diskette's image to a file. I have posted the file here: http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/robofloppy.2 and then i edited that with vim to extract the programs within. here is a simple program that makes 7 poses, and repeats: http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/baby.txt this is a more raw version of all the jobs i found on the disk image, including some fragmentation. I don't understand the filesystem format, so it's just luck that so many of the files were intact in one piece. http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/jobs.txt as you can see, a program is a list of coordinates (the six hardware axes of the robot arm) and then a program referring to those coordinates. it can be more complicated than that of course, for example when we start using base or robot coordinates for 3d printing, but here it is anyway. this stuff is documented in this PDF: http://spaz.org/~jake/robot/479236-17-Communications.pdf and also, i think we might find the serial communications format used by the "diskette drive" to communicate with the robot, so we can skip the magnetic media entirely and send programs directly to the robot over serial. please let me know if you're interested in this stuff and want to try something. -jake
