Coming to the conclusion that sudoers should actively try and keep a better awareness of their surroundings, including CCL. I know I often let CCL just be at the boundary of my awareness and have no idea who's in the space, although it would be easy for me to know. WRT Elliot, I haven't been around enough lately to know, but it sounds like we've kicked out many strangers for less and never thought twice. It's so much easier to be lenient with a familiar face, but that's not "fair"...

help sudoroom have a CNC machine!

sudoroom needs a CNC milling machine! well guess what, we already have one (no i don't mean the robot) i'm talking about the big heavy CSAM thing that is sitting on the border between sudoroom and CCL. It was made to image ICs in their package with ultrasonic probing, but nobody cares about that and it's a really nice big 3-axis platform anyway, so we might as well throw a rotary cutter on there and have a nice CNC mill/router. what's missing? Turns out it's just software. The software that came with the ancient computer is very specifically written for raster-scanning integrated circuits with the ultrasonic probe (which works). but we need software to take G-code and drive a cutting tool around on pieces of wood, so we can carve words into wood planks or whatever. the motor controller for this machine is controlled by an ISA card inside the computer. It is controlled through "ports" accessed by the CPU. If we are unable to find software to take G-code and drive this ISA card (and i'm sure it's possible to find such software) we could just write our own software, to run in linux or DOS or whatever. The computer is a 386. Please try to find software for operating a CNC machine with this setup: Parker Compumotor PC-23 here is the manual for the hardware we have, which lists lots of software stuff: http://spaz.org/~jake/bxi/pc23_ug-servodriver.pdf I haven't imaged the hard drive on the computer there, so i don't have everything backed up, and i haven't looked to see if there is handy software for driving the machine from G-code, but i doubt it's there. Replacing the term "bottom-liner" with..?

Hey all, I want to honor the request from some Omni community members that we replace the word bottom-liner. Can we collect a list of alternatives and mutually agree to attempt to replace this phrase / to lovingly and compassionately correct one another if and when we slip up? As little as it may seem, this will require a cultural shift for a lot of us that I'm sure we're all willing to make, but it'll likely take a bit of time before it collectively takes root. It would be great if those who take particular issue with this phrase could put forth their suggestions. I will collect suggestions and make a poll both online and in the real world. Reminder - no loud music or drumming in disco room plz :)

That room shares a paper-thin wall with our neighbor (the walls of our buildings touch) so until it is better soundproofed there can be no drumming and no loud music - at least, for sustained periods - in that room.. Free Online Class Crypto II from Stanford coming up

BAPS-instantiated provisional ban: Kevin Troffer.

Hey guys, A guy named Kevin Troffer was seen rolling through Omni the other day. I am calling for him to be provisionally banned from BAPS and therefore from Omni. Kevin is not a member of the Bay Area Public School, but he did attend classes at the (short-lived?) offshoot, the San Francisco Public School. For those that don't recall, Kevin is a guy who smashed a bottle across a comrade's face during a SFPS class. The comrade in question who suffered the blow was a manager of an SF bookshop with a back room in which BAPS classes also took place. (This site for classes was originally arranged by BAPS, and extended to SFPS in the spirit of solidarity.) The class Kevin was in, showed up on the wrong day, during another event but was still allowed to use the space. Then, the shop was closing down and Kevin was unhappy about having to leave - he argued with the manager then struck him in front of ~40 people and fled. Subsequent to this, an attempt to ban him at a BAPS meeting was called for and failed, not because any information was provided to contradict this account, but because two BAPS members felt because they were not personally there, they were not in a position to judge. This failure was before Omni and its safe space policy, and before BAPS adopted Sudo's conflict resolution policy as well. Because of this, I am calling for a provisional ban of this individual pending discussion at the next BAPS and Omni delegates meeting. Unfortunately I do not have his photo, but if anyone has one please pass it along, and also please pass along his email address and/or this message to him. Best, David
