Noisebridge: Software Defined Radio Newbie Pre-Meetup - Dec 11, 7 pm

Software Defined Radio, or SDR, is opening up the world of RF to a whole new cadre of hackers. Now we can build new demodulation schemes with a few mouse clicks, and explore a new kind of hidden world. People with SDRs have done exciting things like decode GSM, track commercial airplanes & ships, and talk to satellites. On Wednesday, December 17th, Balint is running the inaugural San Francisco SDR Meetup at Noisebridge. This promises to be an *awesome* event. He is a pioneer in the field, having done a ton of work to unlock the possibilities of SDR. His previous meetup, in the south bay, was packed (20 people alone were streaming it)! The week before, on *Thursday, December 11th*, I'll be hosting a more informal gathering for people looking to enter the world of SDR. You should attend if you'd like to learn the absolute basics. If you buy a SDR before the meeting, we can help get it running. We'll talk, also, about what SDR devices are doing and why they're different from the radio in your car / boat / stereo bike. Even more awesome, everyone who attends with the proper hardware will leave with a working SDR setup, ready to participate in the following week's meetup. What should I do? Glad you asked! Easy! 1. Entry To Omni

Hi All, I am a Sudoroom member, but due to involvement in a project have not been able to come to the Sudoroom since our move to The Omni. Hoping to come down soon, but noticed a post by Marc Juul to Niki about a solved card-swipe problem. Does entry to the Omni now require use of a card? If so, how would I get one? If not, and numbers are pressed in, are the old password numbers still valid, including the universal one? Would hate to come down and not be able to gain entry. Someone please advise. Hello sudo, This is a little short notice, but I was hoping to host a village craft workshop this Saturday 5-7 pm, at the sudo room. I tried to put it on the calendar a couple weeks back, but Matt said it was broken or something... Please let me know if there are any conflicts, and I'll try to find another room. We're having our first comics workshop this Saturday (dec 6th), 5-7 pm, at Omni Commons, 4799 shattuck st, in the Sudo Room. If you have trouble finding us, just call me at (408) 440 6767. Bring your sketchbooks, story ideas, favorite comic books and zines to share. We'll kick off our first workshop with a brief demo where I spill the beans on how I make comics, start to finish. Then we'll bind our own specially formatted half-letter size sketchbooks, to set you up for easy self-publishing. Finally, we'll turn you loose to play drawing games with each other, discuss your stories, and browse through comic books + zines! ALSO! Changing the sudo lights!

Hey sudo ers Imagine a sudo room where you'd want to sit and hack for hours. A sudo were you'd want to have enlightening conversations for hours. Read, Build, Saw, Hang out. All this can become a reality... if we change the damn lighting! Is anyone interested in doing something about the slightly depressing lighting in sudo? I am. I think that if we change the lighting, it will be a small revolution. It would be cool to be a group of fabulous people working on it! I imagine that LED lights instead of the current ones would be great. We could also scatter some smaller & cute directional lights here and there. Hi Helen, the truth is that there is no one in charge of the sewing machines, and if you feel qualified to work on them and improve them, you should go ahead and do that. If you can document what you're doing, it will help if you can either do that on paper by the machines, or preferably by editing the sudoroom wiki. If you are not familiar with Wiki editing, there are people who can help you get started with that. I brought in the Embroidery machine, and I know a little about how it works, but i'm no expert. We appreciate anything you can do to help get all the machines working just right. Note; one of them is a button sewing machine. I think it was mistaken for a serger (which we do not have, but we want) so I am hoping it can be returned and we can get a serger instead. Also we have a very nice "juki" sewing machine that is apparently missing its oil pan. I think oil pans can be made out of sheetmetal, or bought on ebay, but anyway that machine would be a good replcaement for the older machine on the wooden table, if we can get it to work better than that one. thanks you for your help! -jake On Fri Nov 28 Helen wrote: Hello, I recently was invited to sudoroom to check out the sewing machines and have tinkered with them a little bit. Here's a link to a few images of a low cost "Tiny Home" concept based on truck camper RV's which are available for free or very cheap: https://plus.google.com/u/1/photos/106839673035751587991/albums/60779607855… The catch is that the jacks used to raise and lower these campers are no longer functional due to structural issues with the wood frame. So I devised a way in which the camper can be rolled onto the back of a car trailer and then rolled off onto a wood platform foundation. You can see this in some of the attached images. One advantage of the truck camper is that it is not technically a "RV" since it has no wheels plus it is less than 120 square ft. So if you have a property to put one of these on then no permit is required. However, people absolutely hate these things so I modify it to make it look like a small shed. I have two of these tiny homes setup now, one in Marin near China Camp and another in the NE corner of California on a 10 acre farm. There's also an image included of a tent cabin which is technically a "fabric covered agricultural processing structure" in the eyes of the law. The land use is described as a "Tree Sanctuary" where we rescue small endangered trees and reintroduce them into the wild, hence the justification for occupying the property which we own freely with no mortgage or other banking encumbrances.
