Who are you, Edwin ? Why do you keep emailing me privately ?
What is your agenda ? I asked if you are a member of the Sudo Room.
Did you read the forwarded email from the Food Not Bombs volunteer
that described what Sierk has been doing to people? Can a Sudo Room verify
who this is ?

Hi Sudo Room, there is a fire inspection Friday. I suggest we do some
cleaning today and tomorrow. I am able to help clean at 7PM tomorrow, can
anyone else join?
Below is a list from Ojan and Sarah of what to do. Our main work will be
making things look less messy.

Hi Team!
*I know we should probably have a party to celebrate the building being
saved! BUT, we have a fire inspection scheduled for this Friday, so we have
to get through that first lol.*
I'm going to be around for a few hours Tomorrow and Thursday to prepare,
and will be entering all the spaces. I hope each collective can organize
their own spaces as you have in the past to pass fire inspections. I will
need to open all doors for the fire inspector on Friday, so please let me
know if there is a space you have an exclusive key to.
A few typical items that Sarah has flagged for me:
*1. Things blocking electrical panels*
*2. Things obstructing egress paths*… the rear hallway leading to the 48th
St exit and the hallway in the basement leading to the stairs that go up to
the back of the ballroom are the two that regularly are blocked
*3. Extension cords used in place of permanent wiring (unplug and wind
these up)*
*4. Hazmat items not stored in cabinet that aren’t being used by a person
present* — also make sure hazmat cabinet in the basement isn’t obstructed
by stuff … this has also been a regular occurrence
*5. Items stored within 24 inches from ceiling.*
*6. Piles of things - anything that looks like a messy pile might look
flammable to the inspector!*
Thank you all for your cooperation so we can keep Omni's fire assembly
permits in good standing! Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
With gratitude,
*Ojan Mobedshahi* (he/him)

Hi Sodoers:
We had a great time at last night’s USA-CA-South San Francisco Library
Fixit Clinic Repair Advice Workshop
https://www.ssf.net/Events/Fixit-Clinic-Repair-Advice-Workshop-Sept-2024
(Photos at https://photos.app.goo.gl/qyXw5zNzzf9XkEYv8)
- We’ve got one person (Terry) who registered for tonight’s Hardware and
SoftWEAR Hack Night /Fixit Clinic at https://bit.ly/itemcheckins:
Desktop computer Cyberpower PC C Series / ET8160-47547 Turns on, but
shows nothing when connected to monitor I went to Best buy, they
suggested fried motherboard
- Also: Sudoroom member Hilary is going to bring some linux-converted
Chromebooks she needs help with.
Typically on Tuesdays we have lots of new people visiting the space and
it can be intimidating if you don't know anyone and don't know where to
go and what to do. So can someone try to arrive early, say, 7:30 or so
to greet people for Sudoroom (or SoftWEAR downstairs) and get them
started on their projects? And to keep an eye out for people who are
standing tentatively in the entrance between Counter Culture Labs and
Sudoroom and be welcoming to them?
Extra Credit: 1) confirm that the VOIP phone number 442-252-8386 is
working by dialing it 2) put the Fixit Clinic sandwich sign out on the
sidewalk.
Many thanks, -Peter

The prompt for this week's hardware hack night is "open source"
So far I got PSUD
Inkstich / inkscape
Could you mention in a snippet why the open source has helped you and why?
Blender is a biggie -
I will put this hopefully in a blog post when I have time.
https://sudoroom.org/mochi-at-hardware-hack-night-custom-cushions/
Also, next week's theme is "hidden potential" and wil feature inventors who
have beat the odds to overcome stuff like child marriage, lack of formal
educatio and even famine to shine!

Seamly2D is pattern design software to create scalable, sharable custom-fit patterns using bespoke tailoring, haute couture, and historical pattern drafting techniques. Seamly2D saves time and improves fit by creating patterns as reusable, editable parametric CAD engineering documents. Unlike other pattern design software, Seamly2D allows designers to have complete control of the patternmaking process. Each Seamly2D pattern can read multi-size tables for boutique sizing and read individual measurement files for custom-fit.
Seamly2D is open-source software released under the GPLv3+ license. Seamly2D is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. To learn more about Seamly2D on a personal level, join our friendly, active, international, multilingual user forum. On our forum you may post questions about patternmaking and Seamly2D in any language you choose, as sewing terms are rich with idioms that are not always translatable word-for-word.

Hey folks, the "where is the art and math?" in the museum has gone pretty
well! It's so fun! We decided to continue, and Sunday sounds like a great
day to go to visit our very own Oakland museum.
Sunday is the free day too - and it's a great time to go, a lot less
stressy than the first Thursdays which clash with other events.
Brainstorming stuff to think about, but the Oakland Museum has a cool
history section with a "Silicon Valley Garage" that is really neat!

Dear all,
I have been asking around the space to see if folks would be interested
in having an event for skill-sharing of "common tools" to respond to
social, technical, and environmental problems.
Here is a rough draft of what we came up with thus far:
https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/common-tools-event-oakland
I was wondering if more people would like to participate / help organize?
All the details are still TBD!
Best wishes,
LF.
Muiren, Aaaron and others - thank you very much for helping me update the
open source embroidery post.
Is anyone comfortable with me giving attribution (I wasn't sure so I left
you rnames off of the page).

Invisible Technologies, Rainbook Appropriate Technology 1977
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot-2024-09-02-at-11…>
Be resourceful, clever and wise. Some inspiration from Rainbow way back
from 1977
From Rainbow Appropriate Technology, 1977:
INVISIBLE TECHNOLOGIES
The best technologies are often the invisible ones-where people have
figured out how to avoid problems rather than to solve them. Often all that
is required is a perceptual change such as seeing grasshoppers as an
airborne mobile protein harvesting and conversion unit-a food source-rather
than a destructive pest. Or living near where we work rather than building
better transportation technologies. Or eating lower on the food chain so
you don’t have to pay for or grow food for the conversion losses of meat
animals. Or planting trees rather than air conditioners.
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot-2024-09-02-at-11…>
The second-best technologies are also invisible. They’re based on people’s
skills and relationships rather than machines
-the skilled calligrapher drawing a line or carpenter cutting a line rather
than needing a jig or machine: good neighbors rather than locks on doors;
caring for the ill or elderly at home rather than in a Home; hiking rather
than mini-biking: an auto mechanic or piano tuner’s ear rather than a
tuning machine.
But there’s always a range of skilis and scales and situations where things
need to happen, and we’re interested in expanding the range of tools for
situations that have been neglected, and learning when there are good
reasons for choosing one scale rather than another. One size can’t fit
every situation well, and a technology that tries is likely not to fit any
well.
Having to solve problems without money usually results in people getting
resourceful and finding creative ways to use wbat is already there. Money
usually makes us lazy and we end up paying for our laziness and second rate
solutions to problems. Appropriate Technology repeatedly contains good
examples of a.t. equipment and ideas. Here are some of the interesting
projects they’ve covered recently.
• A Nigerian project making medical aids such as arm splints, spinal
jackets and cervical collars from broken plastic drain-pipes. The products
are made by marking the pipe with a paper template, cutting out with a
hacksaw and handstretching the plastic softened over a flame. The resulting
equipment works better than previous products, as they can be easily
adjusted by a nurse or doctor for a perfect fit for every individual and
are waterproof, strong, cheap and reusable.
medical devices*
- A candle-making merry go-round that produces 600 candles per hour with
a single operator (could be solar heated?).
- Nethouse horticulture in Botswana, where it is noted that a high
percentage of a plant’s water requirement is not for growth but to cool it
during respiration. Nethouses shade and cool, reducing water use by 2/3,
and keep birds, insects and hail out.

we had fun looking over SIgnal's open source code this week. We're going to
explore their repositories, they create a lot of cool libraries.
They used to hang out at SudoRoom from time to time, but that was a while
ago. I'm not proposing we do advertising or anything, but they are totally
open source and share so much - is there any way any of them would be
interested in coming in and giving a lightning talk?
Messaging and surveillance is in the news lately and they are neat, it
would be cool to just have a roundtable and whietboarding ...

Hello, I wanted to give a recap on what's happening with Omni Commons
building sale and operations.
Earlier this month, Omni Commons had three options to prevent foreclosure.
The most promising option was to sell the building to CALLI (an affiliate
nonprofit of EB PREC https://ebprec.org/). Once EB PREC confirmed they were
able to fund the purchase, there's been a big push to work as fast as
possible to finalize, given we are on a tight deadline to prevent
foreclosure.
*Acronyms: CALLI stands for Collective Action and Land Liberation
Institute, and EB PREC stands for East Bay Permanent Real Estate
Cooperation. CALLI does not have any projects under its belt yet, but its
board are all current staff at EB PREC.
Everyone currently renting spaces in Omni Commons are getting offered
leases to stay. These leases are still in negotiation, and that's the main
work that's left for us to do right now. Sudo Room is being offered a 34
year lease to stay in the bocce ball court space. We will have to pay more,
but we are also going to have some well-needed commons upgrades (roof
renovation is planned, bathroom renovations, rat proofing, etc all to
come!). Also there will be some new much needed help in managing the
building day-to-day and in conflict resolution. How the building is
operated will ultimately be decided by CALLI, but there's lots of back and
forth and they really want to work with us on this. Some plans include
creating separate entrances and exits for SR and CCL, and restricting
access hours + full building access. The entrance hall will continue to
host the Free Store for now, with plans to add a cafe again up front later.
That is not the focus right now though as there is this big hurry just to
meet foreclosure legal work deadlines and finalize collective + tenant
leases.
This is really exciting, because just a month ago we were at a super severe
risk of foreclosing. We still are cutting it really close, with us
currently having received a notice of default from the foreclosure agency,
and for us being in property tax default. The consensus among the building
was that foreclosing would not be worth the uncertainty, difficulty, and
harm to the community that the building being bulldozed would likely cause.
So that EB PREC was able to step in at this short notice with the funds at
hand, and a willingness to dedicate all this time into making something
work out is really unbelievable.
All of the meeting notes are public on the wikis if you want more info, but
also I'm happy to share more info as requested.
Omni Commons meeting notes: https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Meetings
Sudo Room meeting notes: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Meetings
Thanks,
Paige
It's been suggested that we have a meeting tonight to discuss the final
steps transferring the building.
I'm not sure we have a ton to talk about but I'll be on at 7pm Today. I'll
send the link when it starts.
