Just for the record, I've lived in Oakland almost a decade, I've
driven to Omni 100+ times, and my car has NEVER been broken into. I'm
pretty sure that's because I just don't leave shit in it.
Hey folks!
I, Dusty, and Anka have been putting in some time with the door to SUDO and
CCL. We have reached a point were it is important to get information/input
from you...as we can't proceed with this project without it.
*The basic needs for this door:*
- The door needs to sweep/open outward, toward the main exits of the
building. As such it needs to be "hanged" in a way opposite of it's current
(now former) position.
- There needs to be a "panic bar" installed along with a nice "door
closer". We have the door closer and a panic bar. The panic bar as selected
by Marc (who knows more about this stuff than Anka and myself).
*Needed from SUDO/CCL folks:*
- In order to re-hang this door, we need to figure out how the panic bar
will work with the existing door frame.
- We need to have folks from SUDO relay information about, or instal
(preferred), a panic bar system that will work with whatever electronic
entrance mechanism you will want for your space.
A note on Labor:
Anka and myself, Dusty, are working with doors throughout the building. We
are learning as we go and I feel that it's much slower than I anticipated.
Each door in this place is different and most are quite wonky. I will be
out of town for the month of July...and subsequently unable to work on this
project until my return in August.
We want you to have a great door for your space, and we want it to be
exactly what you want. :). Can SUDO folks take this issue to a meeting and
have it discussed (if appropriate)?
Thanks!
Dusty

It already was set to $HOME/public_html/tmp but that directory didn't
exist. Now it does so should work :)

Hi Niki! I meant to respond when you sent a message like this awhile ago,
regarding someone who refused to properly close the door after opening it.
Before I talk about the technical situation, which I believe applies to
this problem, I want to try to answer your specific question.
The procedure for granting door access, when I do it, is by demonstrating
how the unlocking and re-locking procedure works, and making sure people
understand that they must re-lock the door after opening it.
But of course sometimes people will forget, or worse, actively shirk their
duty to re-lock the door. In the latter case, if a person refuses your
request to re-lock the door they unlocked, I will electronically revoke
their access until they explain themselves at the appropriate meeting.
This would also be appropriate for people who repeatedly forget to re-lock
the door after themselves.
We have been working on the door technology a lot this last week,
improving reliability. But we have been holding back on adding features
because I understand that we are very close to replacing the front door.
The new front door will not "unlock" and "re-lock" but will be the usual
type of door which you "buzz" open, and when it closes it locks again.
One of the features we can add in the meantime is a record of incidents
when people use their card to unlock the door, and it does not get
re-locked within 5 minutes. If the people are not members of La Commune,
we will know to contact them for re-education.
It's my understanding that we have received a permit to replace the front
door, and that someone bottomlining that project has taken measurements.
I do not know how long it will take or who is doing it, but this is why I
have not changed the front door system to activate the doorknob instead of
unlocking the pins. If it activated the doorknob instead, it would
automatically lock when the door closed again. But it's a lot of work to
do considering the door will be replaced very soon.
Once again, if any person with electronic access is being irresponsible
with unlocking the door, I am willing to de-activate their card until they
come to the appropriate meeting to resolve the problem.
And I will be more pro-active in reminding people to lock the door they
open, and I will look into the access logging feature.
thank you,
-jake

The front door was left open by a Sudo member (no personal hard feelings!)
and I just want to make sure that it's being communicated to members that
the door should be closed and locked if no one is watching the front.
I am working on an orientation pamphlet for folks who are new to the space
(it's taking longer than anticipated!) so hopefully by the time we re-key,
we'll have something more tangible to provide people.

Hello Everyone,
We had two tables near the "trash" room and they went missing today. They
had a label with duct tape that said phat beets on them. They were
partially blocking the entrance to the "trash room" because of their
length, so we apologize for blocking an entrances for anyone. If you could
let us know where they are we would be grateful.

I asked Egon to leave tonight due to continually aggressive behavior
towards me and boundary pushing.
I will drop in at the sudo meeting tomorrow (it's during a CCL class so I
can't be there the whole time) to discuss setting up a conflict steward and

I'm specifically trying to get into orchestral composition. Currently I can
read basic music notation and can play at least piano+guitar at a
basic/intermediate level.
I'd like to level up my theoretical understanding and at the same time get
some experience composing.
This looks ok, but a bit basic:

can sneak into?

Hello all,
I'm wondering if anyone here has or knows of a projector that I can
borrow for one week starting next week?
I am going to Mexico for a conference, and we are in need of an extra
projector. Mine has broken. I promise to be very, very extra careful
with it.
Happy to talk more about any details. The conference is bringing really
amazing technology community organizers from across Mexico to meet with
students and academics at the Caribbean Philosophical Association's
annual conference.

Update: tonight's Sudoroom meeting has formally banned Egon for safe
space reasons. Although Omni's policies require a conflict resolution
process on paper, I strongly feel this is an opportunity to carve out
exceptions to that rule.
There were a lot of notes taken. Here they are:

We've already reached our $30K target, but we are still collecting
donations towards our stretch goal: a -80 freezer to store cultures,
plasmids, strains, etc.. A -80 freezer makes sure that the project you're
working on today will still be around for people to build on next year, or
five years from now. Our plan is for this to become a resource for the
whole community, so we will be happy to store archival collections from
BioCurious and other DIYbio labs. We'll be one of the community's
distributed backup nodes, as it were.
Support your friendly local biohackers and mad scientists!

Joe, it sounds like he flat out lied to you. He makes a member feel
unsafe and is not welcome until that issue is resolved. That's the
only story anyone needs to know at this point. Our policies are very
clear about that.
Anyone knows what happened to the big projection screen that was hanging
form the blue biosafety cabinet in CCL?
It disappeared a couple days ago. We're making do with a small standing
screen for now, but we'd like to get our big one back...
Thanks!

Hi all,
I've been meaning to design and laser cut a contraption for our Science
Sideshow at the Cal Academy NightLive LIVE
<http://www.calacademy.org/nightlife/nightlife-live-june> event this
Thursday evening, but I'm rapidly running out of time.
Anyone able to give me a hand?
Basically, I found these vases that look just like giant test tubes - long
cylinder with a rounded bottom. So now I want to make a giant test tube
rack, and have them sitting at our booth with some food color and dry ice,
steaming away. Would look awesome!
I got about halfway through designing the thing in Inkscape, but I've never
dealt with designing fasteners for plywood before. Needs to have a wide
base so it doesn't tip over, but also needs to be hangable from a wall, so
the base may need to be removable.
If I were to order this through Ponoko, I'd probably go with something like
their 1/4 inch amber bamboo plywood
<http://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/show-material/226-bamboo-amber-3-ply>.
Is there any plywood at Sudo? Recommendations for a good place to buy nice
plywood?
Patrik

Hello Bay Area fellow Wikipedians,
The San Francisco Public Library and the Mozilla's HIVE Learning Networks
are launching a new Teen Tech Center in SF called The Mix.
The Hive Learning Network is a global community effort of Youth Servicing
Organizations led by the Mozilla Foundation. The HLN champions digital
skills and web literacy through connected learning. They have a presence in
11 cities including Bangalore, Vancouver and Mombasa, and growing fast with
10 new cities to launch by end of 2015.
This is a pilot program to help us/WMF evaluate if this is a viable
mechanism for the movement to engage with youth and help build future
community of Wikipedians.
The SFPL agreed to host a Wikipedia Station to help youth navigate and use
our projects as well as potentially contribute to them. This program will
be ran by the staff of The Mix - I am looking for someone(s) to train their
staff on becoming a Wikipedian and a guide to the youth in their program.
If you are interested, please feel free to ping me via email, I can share
more details.
The Mix launches next Wednesday June 18th - ideally we would like to have a
Young Wikipedian's in Training booth for back to school - sept 2015.
Thank you!
Sylvia

I'm not sure our universe contains big enough N's or O's to respond to
this appropriately.
