It would take some work to get me to trust a scheme like this... and
it would create social pressure to accept whatever results...

The landlord had a video surveillance system, so it was moot.

Yes, securing their books after-hours.
I visited the Bogotá hackerspace, Hackbo, a month or so ago, and chatted to
them a bit about how the space is working. It's a really nice hackerspace
-- in a residential block, but with four or so big well-equipped rooms, and
with a really busy community, and whiteboards full of really detailed
ongoing projects, which I sort of feel is the real metric of a great
hackerspace.
One of the projects that has shifting from being a prototype to being a
potential full-time work for a bunch of the key hackers is this:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hpsaturn/lumera-transform-your-camera-…
It's a linux-based plugin for Digital SLR cameras (if you don't see your
camera listed, ask, because they're adding them as they go) that gives you
bluetooth LE remote operation, background transfer to online picture
services via your phone or wifi. The hardware will be openhardware, the
code is FLOSS. The device is going to sell for $150 USD ($170 canadian --
they're working with a Canadian group to do the logistics).
Anyway, I just noticed that they're 3 days to go on their kickstarter, but
still have a way to go. I don't have any financial connection with these
guys or the hackerspace, but I try to plug good hacking projects when I
can. I think this'd be a fun gadget to have if you have a DSLR and are
interested in doing some connected messing with it, either with the
existing features of Lumera or extending it.
That's all!
Feel free to forward this around to any communities you think might be
interested!

You accidentally hit reply-all, so I'm not sure how to respond except:
1) I'm actually not particularly trusting of industry or government, sorry
2) the part where I said "it would create social pressure to accept
whatever results" feels particularly relevant to me right now
hi everyone,
just a reminder that you and all your friends are invited to the women's
variety show taking place at sudo (in the ballroom, not inside sudo itself)
tomorrow night!
it's free and starts at 7:30PM.

Hi all!
We are in the last stages of preparations to launch Omni's crowdfunding
campaign next weekend, and we need your help!
Please use this thread to brainstorm on perks we could offer, keeping in
mind that *experiences* are cheaper to produce and more interesting to
donors than shwag.
* Would any sudoers be interested in co-hosting maker workshops?
* How about making robot drawings (and recording the robot drawing it)
based on SVG images people send in?
* Can anyone bottom-line making 3D printed magnets? Or 3D printed something
or others?
* Marc and I are going to be putting together hackpacks <http://hackpack.me>
that people can buy for themselves or for us to donate to a teenager.
* Maybe we could offer a 'teleconference with a hacker'?
* Anything you can think of!
Fact of the day: 85% of successful campaigns raise 1/3 of their goal in the
first 72 hours. Please prep friends in your networks now for a donation
next week!

Hi all,
I'm glad to see the JavaScript meetups resuming! While I've never been
able to attend, I like to refer people.
Is it okay if I post it on the Oakland Beginner Prorammers Support Meetup
Group (which I inherited recently)?
Cheers,
Anca.

Dear all,
I've been in touch with one of the organizers of Catalyst Project, an
anti-racist organization that educates and trains organizations/movements,
and they're requesting use of our space on Dec. 14th or Dec. 16th for an
event that would include 150-200 people.
I'm pushing forward and letting the organizer know that we can provide the
Ballroom for either of these dates. Please let me know ASAP if there's any
possible conflicts.
I feel strongly that we do our best to provide this space for Catalyst at
this time as we need to step up and provide whatever support and solidarity
we can for the PoC community.
Let me know if you'd like to help bottom-line this event. I expect there
will be a lot of new folks coming into our space for the first time, people
that we'd like to open relationships with now and into the future.
with love

I'm never comfortable with any kind of video surveillance. If it's
just pointed at a machine in the corner of CCL or something I wouldn't
make a fuss, but if it's recording common areas or access routes I
would. Whether we run facial recognition is moot - if a digital image
exists, it will be run through facial recognition software sooner or
later. That's life in the botnet of things.
We should also note that La Commune has already been facilitating
conversations for their own security needs, which right now means
locking up bookshelves when they close the store. It would be really
good if we could help them ASAP.
hi all,
the audio setup that was in the ballroom about a month ago when a couple of
us did an audio inventory for this saturday's variety show is no longer in
the same spot.
could someone please let me know where the amp, speakers, and their
connectors are?
thank you!

Yes, we probably should start thinking about some of these things. I'm
CC'ing sudo as well, since they may be able to help out with some of the
technological solutions.
A couple ideas I've mulled over in the past:
- Tags for equipment that shouldn't leave the building, a scanner at the
door that can detect them when they do, and a camera to record who's taking
it through the door. Could be combined with Marc's inventory system, of
course. (And could also be used to check out tools legitimately...)
- Motion or IR controlled lights to discourage stowaways (would need to be
sufficiently hard to disable). Plus maybe an overview panel (physical or
online) showing where and when movement was last detected in the building,
to assist people in closing up for the night.
- Lights illuminating the new bike parking when it gets installed
- Indoor bike parking with some form of access control (swipe card?)
- Equip outside doors with an alarm that starts beeping when the door stays
propped open for more than x minutes.
- How much video surveillance are we as a community willing to tolerate? Is
there an acceptable tradeoff between enhancing personal and property
safety, and respecting privacy? A static and well-advertized camera trained
at a piece of valuable infrastructure may be OK. A building-wide
surveillance system that can track people from room to room with facial
recognition presumably isn't OK. Can we agree on where that boundary lies?
- Put up signs to remind people that they are being video taped from the
apartment building across the intersection. That's a useful PSA for our own
community anyway.

Subject: [Noisebridge-announce] SDR Newbie Pre-Meetup - Dec 11, 7 pm
Hi, All.
Software Defined Radio, or SDR, is opening up the world of RF to a whole
new cadre of hackers. Now we can build new demodulation schemes with a
few mouse clicks, and explore a new kind of hidden world. People with
SDRs have done exciting things like decode GSM, track commercial
airplanes & ships, and talk to satellites.
On Wednesday, December 17th, Balint is running the inaugural San
Francisco SDR Meetup at Noisebridge. This promises to be an *awesome*
event. He is a pioneer in the field, having done a ton of work to unlock
the possibilities of SDR. His previous meetup, in the south bay, was
packed (20 people alone were streaming it)!
The week before, on *Thursday, December 11th*, I'll be hosting a more
informal gathering for people looking to enter the world of SDR. You
should attend if you'd like to learn the absolute basics. If you buy a
SDR before the meeting, we can help get it running. We'll talk, also,
about what SDR devices are doing and why they're different from the
radio in your car / boat / stereo bike.
Even more awesome, everyone who attends with the proper hardware will
leave with a working SDR setup, ready to participate in the following
week's meetup.
What should I do? Glad you asked! Easy!
1. Buy a SDR. The ones listed here are $20 and available on Amazon
Prime: http://www.rtl-sdr.com/buy-rtl-sdr-dvb-t-dongles/
2. Get a job at a tech company. Whine until they give you a fancy
thinkpad or macbook. Install Linux or MacOS. Quit. Don't give the laptop
back.
2. sudo {apt-get yum port} install gnuradio gqrx rtl-sdr
4. Lastly, read some Things on the Internet:
Quadrature Signals: Complex but not Complicated:
http://www.dspguru.com/sites/dspguru/files/QuadSignals.pdf
The GnuRadio Tutorials:
https://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/Guided_Tutorials
Balint's SDR labs: http://files.ettus.com/tutorials/labs/Lab_1-5.pdf
See you all next Thursday!

Hi All,
I am a Sudoroom member, but due to involvement in a project have not been able to come to the Sudoroom since our move to The Omni. Hoping to come down soon, but noticed a post by Marc Juul to Niki about a solved card-swipe problem.
Does entry to the Omni now require use of a card? If so, how would I get one? If not, and numbers are pressed in, are the old password numbers still valid, including the universal one?
Would hate to come down and not be able to gain entry. Someone please advise.
Best to everyone,Ira Brightman
Dear Friends :
La Commune is thrilled to announce our first annual
Holiday Party & Bazaar
Saturday, December 13, from 12 noon to 6pm !
We will have food & drink available, & we'd love to work with other Omni collectives to set up a crafts bazaar like the ones we all remember from when we were kids.
We'll cap off the night with a book release party & poetry reading for the SF press Solar Luxuriance.
More details forthcoming -- till then, please save the date & drop a line if your collective would like to help with the bazaar, sell something, or know someone who might!
Love -- David Brazil (for La Commune)
Hello sudo,
This is a little short notice, but I was hoping to host a village craft workshop this Saturday 5-7 pm, at the sudo room. I tried to put it on the calendar a couple weeks back, but Matt said it was broken or something... Please let me know if there are any conflicts, and I'll try to find another room. And please do attend the comics workshop if you're interested! The text of the invite is below.
~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone!
We're having our first comics workshop this Saturday (dec 6th), 5-7 pm, at Omni Commons, 4799 shattuck st, in the Sudo Room. If you have trouble finding us, just call me at (408) 440 6767.
Bring your sketchbooks, story ideas, favorite comic books and zines to share.
We'll kick off our first workshop with a brief demo where I spill the beans on how I make comics, start to finish.
Then we'll bind our own specially formatted half-letter size sketchbooks, to set you up for easy self-publishing.
Finally, we'll turn you loose to play drawing games with each other, discuss your stories, and browse through comic books + zines!
ALSO! FYI, on the very same day, Berkeley City College is hosting the "East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest," where you can get a taste of the bay area's vibrant zine community. I highly recommend going to the Zine fest before our workshop.
more info on the zine fest:
Hope to see you all on Saturday!
Hey sudo ers
Imagine a sudo room where you'd want to sit and hack for hours. A sudo were
you'd want to have enlightening conversations for hours. Read, Build, Saw,
Hang out.
All this can become a reality... if we change the damn lighting!
Is anyone interested in doing something about the slightly depressing
lighting in sudo?
I am. I think that if we change the lighting, it will be a small revolution.
It would be cool to be a group of fabulous people working on it!
I imagine that LED lights instead of the current ones would be great. We
could also scatter some smaller & cute directional lights here and there.
Let's start a light revolution thread!
