Hello everyone,
I posted this event on Introduction to Javascript today:
https://sudoroom.org/events/intro-to-javascript/
This is intended for beginners but all skill levels are welcome. I know for
me initially learning to program was a bit daunting. There are lots of
technologies and programming languages out there. It can be hard to figure
out what to learn. Through this series it would be cool to get people on a
track of learning how to learn programming. Open to everyone, totally free,
6pm today

Danielle got a huge pile of yummy food donated by a farmers market in Oakland for the Noisebridge Grand Re-Opening Party tomorrow: Hummus, veggies, olives, other dips, a ridiculous amount of strawberries . . .
But she needs someone to grab the stuff from her tonight, since she has an early morning appointment tomorrow.
Anyone have a vehicle and wanna help grab the food from Oakland to Noisebridge tonight? If so, please contact me off-list, and I'll give you Danielle's contact info.
Thanks,
Mitch.
HI all,
I just joined the mailing list not too long ago. I was going to stop
by over the weekend to checkout the space and meet whoever is lurking
around. I just wanted to see if there was any trick to getting in.
Noisebridge has that quirky phone that never seems to work.
Also, I'm a tech/linux enthusiast/developer/foss hippy that moved to the
bay area a few years ago. Would love to get more involved especially as
I'm debating moving to Oakland at some point in the foreseeable future.

Hello,
I'll be spearheading the 501c(3) efforts. I am going to need all the
documents related to Sudo, tax documents, official filings to date, list of
assets and liabilities (COH/ recent bank statement, lease, etc.)
Additionally, to avoid re-doing work already done, I want to hear about any
and all efforts related to acquiring 501c(3) status. My goal is to have an
initial draft of our application prepared for members review by the
middle/end of October 2014. Hopefully we can submit our finalized
application before the holiday season. I look forward to working toward
this important goal but I can't help without input from our more seasoned
members.
Please contact me with documentation, suggestions, experiences yada yada
yada.

Noob post, let me know if I'm not formatting properly or otherwise screwing
this up.
I have experience doing this type of install, I am not licensed. I think
$400 is a fantastically cheep deal (labor and materials), however, I will
need to discuss to be sure I have a handle on the scope of what Sudo wants.
I am available this weekend to work on the install and am totally wiling to
follow someone else's lead. We can borrow condi benders from the tool
library up the street (tele @51st), they might even have a pull-tape which
we will need. Lets talk to coordinate material lists, tools, and meeting
time.
I would suggest opting for quad plugs rather than duals, metal boxes w/
metal faces and individual wire spools for the the pulls (14awg white, blk
and green).
We need to make drawings of where the outlets will be & where we will
access power. This is important because we may need to put in junction
boxes for long runs and/or increase the condi size over 1/2 inch, and we
are likely installing new 20A braker(s).
Lastly, who will be signing off on the work prior to making it HOT?
you can reach me at

Thanks,
Whitney
Hi all,
A lot of folks are helping to document everything that's going on in
Ferguson on the St. Louis LocalWiki: http://localwiki.net/st-louis/
You can see how much has been added just tonight:
http://localwiki.net/st-louis/Ferguson
But there's a lot more needed:
http://localwiki.net/st-louis/Ferguson_Pages_Still_Needed
You can help document everything that's going on by:
- Adding information - links to news articles, etc.
- Boosting the signal - you can get on social media & invite people to
help contribute.
Thanks for your time,
Marina
Please come to the **Noisebridge Grand Re-Opening Party** this Friday evening.
We are ready to rock, and want you to come help us celebrate!
Comedy! Music! Food! Drink! Demos! Awesome people! You!

I contacted an electrician who did work at my workplace a while ago, and
asked about our situation (specifically at sudoroom)
he charges $45 per hour and can provide a proper invoice, however he is
not a "C10" certifiable electrician. But the work he would do would
satisfy a C10 (such as the one he knows) if we were to hire one to "sign
off" on stuff.
Unless someone on one of these lists has a conduit bender and enjoys
running pipe and installing outlets (while following all obscure rules), I
think we should hire Taylor to install outlets in sudoroom (and wherever
else they are needed)
I volunteered to be his helper, working (and managing other volunteers) to
help the job go as quickly as possible, thus saving money and his time.
But I would need approval from whatever group would be paying for his
labor, and the materials that we will need to do the job.
my guess is that the job will cost $400 including materials, but i have
never done a job like this before so it is only a guess. My notes are
here:

Hi Sudoers,
Wanted to invite you to an event that I'm hosting on Thursday eve:
*Intelligent Assistance and Trusted Conversations*
http://sl-co.com/intelligent-assistance-and-trusted-conversations/
Thursday 14 August, 6:30pm to 8pm
The speaker, Dan Miller, is an analyst with Opus Research (not selling
anything).
In light of all the news about voice, AI, and biometrics being used to
"save you from passwords" or identify you by your walk and movement, or
extend Siri to actually check your calendar AND book a reservation in
the same request... there's a lot of intriguing technology in this
field. If you use a phone, you're part of it.
The talk is free.

SUPER-THANKS to 'Kare Raisu' for bringing the punch down tool and
helping with the first patch panel!
We got the first patch panel completed, and Kare agreed to continue
working on the second one on Wednesday.
The first part took way longer than I expected. Well, it was our first
one ever. We learned lots of little tricks on how to proceed best.
At first it seems like just plug it in and punch it.
There were little unknowns that we didn't know that we now know. :)

Hey everyone at sudo discuss!
My name is Matt and I am looking for a person who is good with 3D printer
mechanics to work on my Ultimaker v1.
There are only a few minor problems with it such as the axis are
misaligned, and I want to add a heated bed (requires a relay and some
soldering and wiring)
this stuff is super easy for someone who knows what they are doing. i do
not haha.
would anyone be willing to fix this problem for me? I can give you many
frankinscents and muur
Hello all,
Good news! I got an email offering 2 almost full boxes of CAT6 cable.
Should I take them?
Kidding! I replied yes and went to get them. I will bring them in tonight.
More deets later, I am in my lunch time w the food in front of me and I am really hungry. :)
Thx!
Hi sudoers.
I added some donation guidelines so people will know what to bring and what
not to bring to sudo room:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Donations
Now we can just point people here if they ask about dropping off donations.
I also added a link to this page from the left menu of the sudo wiki.
Of course feel free to edit/append if you don't agree with the list.

Just another note - if Sudoers that are at Omni today could possibly:
- start moving Sudo basmeent things into Sudo any time (copier, etc)
- make a place for those things in Sudo
That'd be great. Thanks!

Hi all,
MaptimeSF <http://www.meetup.com/Maptime-SF/> is having an OpenStreetMap
10th Anniversary Party and OSM mapathon this Saturday from 2-5PM at the
Stamen Design office in SF.
I've been meaning to check out MaptimeSF and meet some of the folks in the
geo community in the area and this seems like a perfect occasion.
(Especially since mapping is such a core part of LocalWiki
<http://localwiki.org>) Hope to see you there!

Greetings comrades, cronies, & contemporaries,
As I may have intimated, I'm spending the moeity of the month of August
canoe camping on our favorite lake in the Sierras, Utica Reservoir.
<http://www.ebiow.yasashi.net/images/UTICA/> It is really lovely here,
about 3.5 hours from Oakland at about 7,000 feet, great swimming and
hiking, and since this is dispersed camping, you don't have to pay fees,
listen to generators or suck SUV fumes. Anywho, I schlepped along a
metric buttload of extra gear, so if you feel so inclined, please come
on up. I have 3 extra tents, 5 sleeping bags, pads, plates, utensils,
stoves, tables, chairs, cooking gear, the whole magila, so you only need
to bring your clothes and any food you might want to consume (I'll have
plenty of rice and beans, but few other goodies). I'll be here until
August 30th because I have a funeral in Watsonville on the 31st.
August 2014

The problem is where I'm camping is not immediately obvious if you
haven't been here before (which many of you have). I'm at Point Edmund,
to those who have been here, our favorite spot. And even many of you
who have been here do not remember the specific directions well. So
best is if you can hook up with my first wife Kathy, who is coming up
Friday the 15th at about 1 PM and Thursday the 21st at roughly 5:30 PM.
She'll be returning Sundays. She has room for 1 or 2 extra folks on the
15th & maybe 1 on the 21st, but you can caravan with her and she can
lead folks to the spot. You can call her on her cell phone at
510-326-9328 or try our home phone at 510-763-0591. Or you can try to
hook up with one of the people who has been here before and of course,
if you know the way, feel free to come by whenever you want.
If there is enough interest I might also go back to the hills in
mid-September for a stretch, about the same time as the infamous Occupy
Utica <http://www.ebiow.yasashi.net/videos/OccupyUticaLake_2013.avi>
escapade last year.
The hopes of the free (or at least the very cheap) world go with you,
Ed
PS: I don't have internet up here and will only be scanning my email
periodically from a nearby internet cafe. Those of you with deep
pockets and ATT phone service can get reception here. Kathleen is not
an internet afficiando. Her schedule is fairly rigid, so if you wish to
join her you should be at Slothaven on time.
Hey guys. My name is Matt.
I don't know if this message went through last time, so I am sending it
again, and sorry if you are seeing this twice
I have a Ultimaker v1 that needs a heated bed added to it ( have the
parts except relay) and the axis' realigned. Simple stuff but I am not
mechanically inclined enough to know what strength relay I need, or know
how to solder and wire things.
If you know how to build a 3D printer, and are confident that you can
handle this task, get in touch through this email deal-e-o and lets talk.
I can get you some money in exchange for your services of course. Or
maybe some prints!
Apologies for the delay. Meeting notes from this week!
tl;dr:
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- Sudo sponsoring event with Critical Resistance on September 20th w/
Cece McDonald
- Startup weekend Sept 12-14 - 50% discount codes - talk to Brendan...
or just use 'sudoroom'. Free food! $25!
- Next Newbie Night: Wednesday, August 13th, 5-8pm hosted by Juul & Jake!
NEW MEMBERS!
...up for 'extended pondering' this week. Please reply if you have any
objection to these new members!
- Timothy
- Why do you want to be a member? Likes working with other people,
would be nice to work here
- What are you excited to do at sudo room? Hacking on his own stuff,
open source, perhaps collaborators?
- What do you hope to share with Sudo Room? Pair programming, sudo
web infrastructure, doesn't do php really (mostly ruby)
- Hasn't been banned from a hackerspace!
- Boyd
- Why do you want to be a member? I like this new movement for
hacktivism around the world and making things that already exist work
better.
- What are you excited to do at sudo room? I'm not very good with
code, but I think it'd be cool if I was. Found out about sudo from
Andrew/backspace, used to come to the leather workshop. Moved close by,
interested in the mesh. Scarred by previous Comcast employment.
Democratizing internet access. Likes climbing and being handy
- What do you hope to share with Sudo Room? Sharing excitement and
enthusiasm.
- Has not been kicked out of a hackerspace, that they know of.
- Grew up in the midwest. Cops were nice there and gave you ice cream
for wearing your bike helmet.
- Really wants to see the robot do cool things.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION:
(via Hol):
1. No conclusive evidence found to support accusation based on review of
available info over 2 weeks. Whatever we do now sets the precedent for
future cases - person who brought the matter up (daniel) is OK to allow
Phil back in. Felt it was his duty to speak up since the concern had not
been proactively addressed by Phil.
2. Further research continues as to nature of threat to privacy and risk of
disruption from outside groups with ill intentions. Sudoers interested in
the topic of entities related to this accusation, particularly the DAC,
should feel free to get in touch and assist with research.
3. Consensus is a process susceptible to disruption. We should think about
cases when it is better to fork into parallel paths to avoid gridlock, and
consider ways to amend our policies to become structurally hardened against
this type of attack. In some cases, it may seem that consensus on an item
has been reached when discussion is still warranted, and dissenting views
may trigger accusations of intentional disruption. People may have
conflicting views or different approaches socially, legally, etc. Emphasize
respect for different points of view while keeping an eye out for
intentional disruption. Need to be able to handle and attenuate disruption
whether intentional or unintentional.

can someone help me understand the unit W/m.K
it's a measurement of thermal conductivity of a material. I don't really
understand. I get W/K or K/W but i don't understand where the meter comes
in.
For a flat material of a specified thickness, i would understand watts per
degree per square meter, but i don't get the single meter thing.
here is an example:

how does that measurement work?

It would be fun to show it.

We should follow this thread closely. :)

"[hackerspaces] Examples of IRS 1023 froms Nonprofit Makerspaces"
As some of you have noticed I can be flakier then a lethal case of
psoriasis, but I've finally got a couple of images ready to muck with
those 50 or so machines that are providing cover for the rats' nest
right now. Unfortunately, I'm planning on leaving town for a few weeks
to go camping so I won't be able to show folks how I'd like to process
the buggers. But I have actually typed up a set of instructions if
folks can't be bothered to await my second coming.
I took one of the dual core machines, installed Kubuntu 14.04, imaged it
and then set it up as a local server. It is over towards the computer
hardware wall on one of the tables, ready for enterprising folks to have
at. It is a boxy Dell a wifi PCI card so it can get the internet and its
ethernet is configured to provide a connection of other boxes through a
little switch. The machine (whose hostname is Spartacus) is also
attached to a KVM switch so it can share its monitor, keyboard and mouse
with up to 3 other machines that are being worked on. There is a black
button to control which machine has the KVM's attention at the moment.
So Spartacus is configured with a number of services.
1. Apache web server which has the incomplete instructions about how to
image the new boxes (there is also a crumpled piece of paper there with
some of the instructions).
2. Samba file server to host the images, one for the old Dells under the
server rack (40 GB hard drives) and the other for the somewhat newer
dual core machines near the 3D printer.
3. Approx, a deb installation file caching proxy, so you can quickly
download and install Debian and Ubuntu packages instead of downloading
them afresh for each machine. When I have time when I get back I'll put
the approx cache on an encrypted partition so it will be harder to muck
with. I'll also use the machine to host Linux & BSD distro isos. I'll
also include instructions about how to use approx for your personal
machines with a few easily-to-follow instructions.
I put all that stuff at sudoroom, but wasn't able to totally finish the
instructions when I was there. But I mailed an updated "index.html"
file and an updated installation script to an account that I set up on
Spartacus and its clones, sudoroomie(a)gmail.com. If some helpful person
wants they can open Thunderbird, download the 2 files and put up them in
/var/www/html. You'll have to sudo to get them there, that directory is
owned by root.
Anywho, the upshot is, boot up Spartacus, hook up a machine you wish to
image, then follow the directions on Spartacus (use a web browser to go
to http://localhost). You can use the live CDs or the 256MB USB stick I
left there to install the image. When I get back I'll make another
install image or two for Debian testing and maybe a 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04
image, as well.
The instructions are annoyingly long and don't cover many of the cases
that will undoubtedly emerge. If & when I get back in September I plan
to start hosting a regular Friday afternoon/evening Linux InstallFest
where folks can come to get Linux help, share tips, get access to
installation media, and perhaps eat some warmish pizza when I get back
from my weekly donation run at 9PM.
If you want to install Linux on the machines without my image server
there are a bunch of DVDs in a Microsoft Developer kit binder over on
hardware wall. But if you don't want to place the box in a home
somewhere, please label the sucker appropriately so people who want to
use them know what they are getting in to. Also, this should go without
typing, please leave my KVM switch, ethernet switch & USB stick more or
less where they are, or at least tell me where they have been moved.
If any of you are at loose ends this month feel free to join me
dispersed canoe camping
<https://www.google.com/images?q=Utica%20Reservoir&sa=N&tab=wi&gws_rd=ssl>
about 3.5 hours from here in the National Forest in the Sierras. My
first (and so far only) wife Kathy will be driving up on Thursday or
Friday nights so you can get a ride with her or at least have her show
you how to get there. We'll have a couple of extra tents and a few bags
& pads and have extra chairs, plates, etc., so you just need to bring
your food, grog & clothes (provided the camping gear isn't otherwise
spoken for that weakend). I'm hoping I'll be able to get intermittent
Internet access at the coffee shop in Bear Valley, about 3 steep miles
away. Anywho, my home number is 510-763-0591. The phone is even dumber
then I am so you'll have to leave a call-back number loudly and clearly
on our 20 year old $5 answering machine. If I'm spared I'll be back in
early September.
