laser cutter

i have visited two hackerspaces here in Toronto, including http://hacklabs.to and http://torontotoollibrary.com and it's clear that a hackerspace needs a laser cutter. Sudoroom doesn't have one yet, so we should start thinking about which one we will get. I heard we had $12,000.00 too much in the bank, and here at TTL they have a HUGE laser cutter called the Lasersaur. It's a kit, sortof, but it's a very serious machine. It uses a 100 watt laser! and that means it can cut through 3/4" plywood (in multiple passes) http://www.lasersaur.com/ okay maybe we're not ready for something like this quite yet, but when we're ready we should keep it in mind. We can skip over the step of getting a cheap lame cutter like those other hackerspaces. speaking of other hackerspaces, hacklabs has one from Universal Laser Systems that they got off Craigslist for $500 because the controller was fried. They built a motor control system (the hard way) and then they had a nice laser cutter! I think it's 25 watts. -jake

Robotics enthusiast needed for perverse bloody performance art project

Hello Sudoroomers. I spoke to some of you in person and they recommended i use the listserv to speak to more of you at once. I am *NOT* a member of the listserv so if you respond to my message *please* email me off list at thegayscience(a)gmail.com. I'm looking for someone with an interest in and operant knowledge of robotics who can help me build an unguided, fast-moving robotic filing cabinet on wheels. My intention is to battle it with a hammer, naked, in a crowded room. I intend to get injured, but not as injured as the filing cabinet. I am looking for someone who can help me create this-not someone who can provide guidance or advice. I'm afraid the learning curve is just too steep for me, and i'm too busy, between working full time, participating in the growth of Omnispace and developing a (seperate, unrelated) dance project. I would provide all the necessary materials. The filing cabinet would have to move fast enough to hurt me, but not fast enough to *really* hurt me. It must be unguided because its necessary that 1. i am battling it and not a human user somewhere and 2. It must have the potential to injure my audience as well. It must have a minimum of three axes of movement. Other than that the sky is the limit. I'm willing to discuss compensation, that is money, for your help. Lead paint... NOT!

Marc and I did some spot checks for lead in the paint on the CCL side of the Bocce ball court, including some of the heavily peeling parts on the North and East wall, and some specks we managed to knock off the ceiling with a tennis ball. *No lead in any of the 6 different samples we checked!* Yay! Highly surprising for a building this age... We used Lead Check swabs <https://www.google.com/search?q=lead+check&tbm=shop> by 3M - you should be able to find them at most paint stores and home improvement stores for around $10 for two swabs. You might want to get some to test other spaces, and we may still want to get an official lead inspection at some point. But so far, this does look very promising... We also poured two plates to test for mold. Again, around $10 per kit <https://www.google.com/search?q=pro-lab+mold+test+kit&tbm=shop>, but you need to pay an extra $40 if you want a lab to identify the specific mold species. [OMNI] Proposals up for consensus:

Hey sudo! At Thursday night's Omni delegates meeting, the following proposals were put forth and are up for discussion over the next week, to be voted on at next Thursday's Omni meeting: 1. Paying Jesse Jesse Palmer is the Omni's lawyer and has done a phenomenal job helping us get to where we are now. His bill totals somewhere in the realm of $8500, which divided among 10 collectives means Sudo would contribute ~$850. 2. Paying an additional month of rent into a reserve Our rent for July is free, but all collectives could pay rent for the month of July anyway to be put into a reserve fund. I think this is a great idea, and we have the funds for it (I believe we have ~$12,000 in the bank). 3. Revision to Consensus Process: Thus far, the Omni Collective has made decisions using a full consensus model. The proposal on the table is for votes to strive for full consensus, but resort to a 2/3 majority vote if consensus cannot be achieved. This model was recommended by Jesse, who has extensive experience representing coops and collectives who've run into problems with full-consensus models for hairy decisions like banning an abusive individual or - as may be the case with us - removing particular groups/collectives from the larger collective. Proposal : New Voting Model All votes called by the Delegate Council are subject to two rounds of voting. The first round passes by full consensus. If after friendly amendments and conversation full consensus cannot be achieved, the vote moves to a second round which passes by 2/3 majority. If this second vote fails to pass, the vote does not carry. This amendment to our full consensus voting procedures is proposed in light of advice from radical comrades and colleagues who have seen groups and projects torn apart by bad-faith exploitation of full consensus voting. Our group's aim and aspiration will always be full consensus, and we will always work to make sure all voices are heard. We moved the 2 Two Posts Racks, and the improvised server cart holding three two Servers and a Dell Desktop. If someone could clear up the rest of the stuff would super! What is left? Server Room Update July 21, 2014: Donation via Chris, Screws + Cage Nuts + Server Rack Status

Hello All, Just we all know: DONATION RECEIVED: We have received a donation of 2 Two Post Racks. Thanks Chris!! The donation easily saved us about 400 dollars. We only needed one for production, but Jeremy and I already have discussed how we can use the second one (training for those who would like to learn how to reset passwords, erase config files, and or do OS upgrade on the spare Cisco Switches that we have. :) -Oh yeah... we couldn't wait and installed a couple of switches on one of the racks! :) SCREWS AND CAGE NUTS: Anyhow: for those that know how messy can get with having the wrong kind of screws and cage nuts: We have narrow it down to have the donated racks tread as a model to use for the Server Rack square holes. So when we trying to install a switch or rack mount server/device we won't go bunkers trying to figure out what screws should be use. The screws we are using are 12-24. SERVER RACK STATUS: And talking about the Server Rack.... Last Friday I checked with the Vendor and I am glad I did. There was some wrong info in the billing part of the order, it did get corrected then. So now that detail got cleared up, the estimate shipping date is August 16. In the morning at&t was at the omni, they were chopping the tree across the street and preparing the phone line for sonic. They eventually installed two panels with lines going to the landlord and us. The line to us was marked as *sonic cir 319* and *sonic cir 320*, but nothing was setup. Then we wired it and... we have internet!

Advantage of buying one use is obviously, we keep it as long as we need and when we are done (if nothing breaks) we just sell it for about what we bought it for, which will be cheaper than renting. We have these 'get up high' tasks - some necessary, some potentially necessary: Ballroom: - Ceiling tiles: these are falling off/down, some water damaged - fix, remove or replace - Soundproofing (as per a studio engineer I took through the place): Pexiglass or similar under the skylights, and some sort of closeable/openable cover for the 2 large pull fans (ie large openings from which most of the sound escapes into the neighborhood). This will be necessary for any future cabaret license.. and we need to start renting that ballroom. Barroom: - Ceiling tiles & florescents: remove - New ceiling lighting & eletrical conduit: install Sudo/CCL room: - Pull fans to install in skylight vents - peeling paint & superficial damage to fix in ceiling (as per CCL's need for cleanliness) Exterior: - Siding on south wall: fix up and/or or replace damaged / rotting boards before rainy season (Landlord may pay for some of this) Potentially necessary everywhere: - SPRINKLERS aaaaaaahhhhh - this will make it far less expensive / scary an investment. If we bought a used lift, we could start installing it room by room and take our time. - Fixing any elctrical, gas or plumbing pipe high up that is hard to reach An added possible benefit marc brought up - if we kept it - this would aid greatly in Mesh installs around oakland.. maybe mesh could help out with the purchase, and it could be taken on field trips..? Extension 1 for sales, tech is Keshon - if anyone needs to communicate with them They were let in finally by John thank goodness - It would still be good if someone was there - the tech needs to try to improve the bandwidth. If someone could roll over and assist the tech, that would be good? - I did confirm that at least on paper we are connected to the close C.O.
