Hey all,
As a result of our meeting tonight and a discussion the on-going issue with
sudo-kids, we drafted and sent this letter to Laurie. We wrote it in
collaboration with folks at the space after the meeting, and sent it in
do-ocratic fashion. We provide a copy below in transparency and
accountability:
Hi Laurie,
This week George addressed a group of folks in the common area outside of
Sudo Room and the Public School regarding the presence of minors in the
building. His behavior was …
[View More]confrontational, hostile, loud, and very
upsetting to many of those who were present, including some
parentally-accompanied minors. There has unfortunately been a series of
miscommunications about this issue, and we are dedicated foremost to
resolving it amicably.
First, thank you for communicating the building's policies on minors via
email. Unfortunately, due to a lapse in our own internal communication, the
contents of your email were not conveyed sufficiently to the relevant sudo
room members before Wednesday of this week. Please understand this was a
lapse in communication that has been rectified.
Secondly, since early June, every Tuesday evening parent-supervised minors
have attended sudo room. We provide no supervision services for minors. In
fact, we provide no services to customers (we don't have customers) as we
are a membership association. It was unclear that this event was
specifically of any concern since it followed the requirement of
supervision by parents. We are willing to meet the necessary requirements
to ensure that you and George are provided with the appropriate advanced
notification of any planned future sudo room events involving supervised
minors and their parents. It is relevant to note that in the past we have
allowed accompanied minors to be in the "Art Room" and not use common
space, but in recent instances the common room has been used as well.
Further, since we are interested in being as accessible as possible to
different communities and demographics, we would like to clarify what
opportunities there might be (through city services, insurance, waivers,
etc.) for minors to be in the building in ways other than those outlined in
your email.
Thirdly, regarding the damage to the bathroom you discuss in your email,
we understand your concerns and are sorry that it happened. We have raised
awareness in hopes of preventing instances like this from happening in the
future. While we are happy to take shared responsibility for ensuring the
bathrooms are clean and usable, we want to communicate that we are not
aware of any evidence that the minors who have been at sudo room were
responsible for the damage. We fully support your desire to keep all parts
of the space (including the bathrooms) vandalism-free, clean, and usable,
so we have made all sudo room members aware of this incident, reinforced
the expectations surrounding bathroom cleanliness, and reiterated the
policy that children should not use bathrooms unaccompanied. Please let us
know if you encounter any problems with the bathrooms in the future so that
we can take appropriate action. However, we also ask for understanding that
if there are problems with a shared space in the building, that absent
specific evidence, sudo room may not have been the source of a particular
problem.
Finally, we would like to share with you a few of our expectations as
lessees that we hope will help us continue to stay in this building that we
have been very happy to rent for the last 9 months:
Our Expectations:
That issues with our use of common space or our use of our rented "Art
Room" be conveyed in writing, with disrespectful confrontations being
completely unacceptable, in any circumstances.
Consistent with Sudo Room standards, that minors continue to be able to
participate at Sudo Room, provided they are accompanied by parents or a
legal guardian.
To work together with you as we grow, which requires we be accessible to
more communities and demographics.
To consider options for mitigating liability through additional insurance,
waivers, etc.

Hi All-****
We are having big problems with the number of children in the building. We
are not insured for children, and to use that space for any type of
children’s program the City has stringent requirements that must be met,
both in terms of …
[View More]physical layout/inspections and insurance. Children
(under 18) should not be in the space except when accompanied by their
parent(s) with advance notice to us. There should be no special programs
involving children happening in the upstairs area. We are also aghast at
the destruction that has been done to the restrooms by the children, and
ask that all children using the bathroom be accompanied by and monitored by
their parents. The stress on the restrooms in general has been huge
because of the number of people in the building from The Bay Area Public
School and The Sudo Room, and we ask that you start to clean the bathrooms
regularly or be prepared to start to pay for the additional Janitorial
time/supplies that are driving us both crazy!****
Also, the ADA restroom is for the disabled, and should not be used except
when others are full or for a special reason. The stress being put on that
room could mean that when it is really needed it may not be in working
condition.****
Please call George if you need any clarification on these issues, and
thanks in advance for cooperating with us on these matters.****

Hey all,
I'm planning to meet George at 4pm about Workshop Weekend, but this may be
a convenient time to turn in the lease and get …
[View More]access to the "art studio"
asap. Contacting Eddan about signing on behalf of Sudo Room. Please see
Laurie's note below that we may have others on the lease, but insurance is
simpler if it is simply Sudo Room (which I presume means those signatories
on the Doing-Business-As aka Fictitious Business Name--Eddan and myself).

Hi Matt-****
Attached please find a copy of the lease. I was extremely tired when I got
home last night and just crashed out without finishing the lease. I’m so
sorry about that! But I got up quite early as a result, so hopefully
you’ll get this first thing in the morning.****
You’ll see that there is a little bit that we’re trying to work out with
Utilities….since there is so much common area involved, there is a 6% load
factor for your space which combines your exclusive space and a percentage
of the common area space, which is obviously quite large. We are really
not sure with what intensity the space will be used, nor the amount of
electricity that will be used, since this will likely not be traditional
office space, so we’re willing to start out at 4% (which would be fine if
usage is mainly as a part-time space for people, without unusual amounts of
electrical equipment or HVAC being used), but reserve the right to move it
up to 6% if the load factor warrants it. In general, 1% of utilities
amounts to an average of $30-$50/month, depending on the time of year,
occupancy rate and overall tenant usage. If trash removal or janitorial
for this space is or might become an issue, that’s something that we can
discuss. ****
We didn’t have an address for you so you should add that to the lease. If
there are others responsible that you feel should be added that will be
there on a regular basis that is fine; however, insurance would be best if
it is a single policy covering the Sudo Room and all people that it might
invite or allow to share its space with.****
Let me know if there are any other errors, inconsistencies or anything else
in the lease that you might want to discuss. I will be home until
mid-afternoon at 510-635-9500. ****
I know that George is supposed to meet you later but we both have
back-to-back acupuncture appointments on Piedmont Ave later. Mine is at
4:30 and George’s is scheduled for 5:30. If it’s possible to meet George
sometime between 3 and 4:30 (whatever is most convenient for you) that
would be great, because he will have to leave shortly after 5pm. Let us
know what works for you.****
Thanks!
Laurie****

Hi George and Laurie,
After an online vote and our in-person meeting, we would like to sign a
lease with you for the "Art Studio" space upstairs in 2141.
If we can please clarify your most comfortable position on signatories of
the lease, we would be happy to comply. Ideally, we would like to sign as
the unincorporated association of Sudo Room (namely for instance that Eddan
and I have signed to register Sudo Room as a ficitious business name).
However, we can also sign as individuals if necessary, and would like to
know how many folks you would allow to sign.
Thanks, speak with you soon. George, I plan to see you Friday but we can
receive the lease by email (or by paper) sooner.
We would love to get access to the space upstairs as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Matt****

Our landlord has informed us that he's having his birthday party in
the common area the night of Sunday September 15th. There is a raw
food event scheduled for 3-5, and the party will start setting up soon
after. It sounds like it will be a fancy catered affair. He's asked us
to have the room as clean as possible beforehand - including finding
temporary places for a lot of the furniture and things that usually
live out there.
He was not aware of other events scheduled for that night but I …
[View More]think
bioinformatics is. Possibly others. We'll have to keep events inside
Sudoroom and the Public School, or negotiate use of the vacant rooms.

i was just so blown away at the crypto party. all these smart hackers
sticking it to "the man."
i'm just so impressed at how passionate everyone is. why i was there and
the passion just showed. people were going to go hiking in the sierras.
they were going to fly to cuba.
sudoroom is such a brilliant place full of smart people. wow, the passion
just dazzles me. i am so impressed at all the after parties, and how truly
full of passion and genuine people are.
i am just so lucky to be part of …

just dive into making promotional comics to teach small children how to use

Hi guys! So I just got into oakland and was treated with a big bag of trash
outside the doorway. Excellent! Given the previous email I sent, a great
time to test the theory. So going through it made this AWESOME thing, which
is a miniature greenhouse (it's there, plant something in it) and gonna be
sweet if hemp goes in.
Do you think it's a good idea, that we could when we have a party have an
"afterparty" in the morning where we put on a bunch of music and hack stuff
or upcycle it, recycle it,…
[View More] and see how little we can get the stuff reduced
to? (there's really not any such thing as trash (except WalMart), think
cardboard, plastic bag, plastic, metal, aluminum, etC!)
re negative value, some guy I guess actually got pretty emotional about it.
So I hacked his message into the meme. <3

So enjoy, and here's a video. Because I'm at the sudo room and can't get a
working wifi+ sound (can we.. nvm), you don't get the one with nudity in it.

Hey all,
There was a link sent to the Nerds for Nature email list about using community photographs to collect data for natural spaces, parks, etc. You set up a single station with a guide for your camera, let folks take photographs with any device, gather them up, then use a photo stitcher to put together a timelapse.
I think this is an excellent way to document moments at sudo negotiated by the consent of individuals and through human action, rather than a webcam and automated constant …
[View More]stream.
Please leave the pedestal in its current position, there is tape on the floor so you can replace it if necessary.
Thanks!

Hi all,
Not to add to the clutter at sudoroom, but I'd just like to point out that
the big apartment building in Alameda that I've been living in will be
closing down this weekend, and there might be some goodies to be found for
th eenterprising dumpster diver. There's at least another dozen households
that will need to move out during these last few days, and the recycling
containers around the back are already overflowing.
There's a set of nice filing cabinets sitting near the trash, and …
[View More]one of
the recycling containers seems to have some chairs in it as well. As these
last stragglers move out (I hear they've got all three elevators scheduled
for moving companies from now until Saturday), I would expect a lot more
stuff to appear. Might be worth keeping an eye on...

Alameda<https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Marina+View+Towers,+1100+Pacific+Marina,+Ala…>
Trash and recycling containers are around the back of the building and are
unlocked. There is a security car that does the rounds very sporadically.
Good hunting!
