Seems like Wednesday is one of the less hectic days, I attended the weekly meetup a couple of weeks ago and it didn't seem too huge, maybe we could nestle in the quadrilateral of chairs and couches near the entrance to the sudoroom proper without being unduly burdensome. If it makes our presence marginally less loathsome I'll bring a 12 pack or so of IPA to share with the Meetniks. We'll be breaking into some genome and gene data and digging a little into biopython to do some sequence extractions. This summer MBA achieved its longtime goal of taking a group of youth on an overnight residential meditation retreat. Participants were recruited from our longtime partner the METAS program, a tutoring program for youth in the Richmond, CA area. Ten youth and young adults (ages 14-20) participated in this 3-day, 2-night retreat, and it was a triumph! Our retreat took place at Redwood Glen, a beautiful retreat center nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains with breathtaking views and hundred year-old redwood trees. The youth who took part in this retreat were amazing! We took them through mindfulness meditation exercises, deep sharing activities, long periods of silence, and advanced compassion practices. We hiked around the woods and meditated in the forest, by a beautiful stream, and discussed life at night by the campfire. Upon its completion, every young person who participated in the retreat was interviewed about the experience was like. Without exception they described how beneficial they felt the retreat was, mostly citing reductions in stress, contemplation about life, and an increased emotional awareness. Most of the youth said they would like to repeat the experience next year, and would even like to extend it to a five or six-day retreat. We had a wonderful ladder. It was tall, safe, had two sturdy feet. It said Rachel in blue marker all over it, because it belongs to a sudoer who let us use it for a long time. It is now missing, just when we need it for space cleaning. Did any of you take it? Does any of you know where it might be? If this got stolen we will be sad.

brain hacking on hawking

Hey all- My name is Steve and was involved in several Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) hacks on McHawking, the wheelchair robot, back when it lived at Noisebridge: http://www.instructables.com/id/Brain-Controlled-Wheelchair/ <http://www.instructables.com/id/Brain-Controlled-Wheelchair/> About 3-4 of us are banding together over the next several days to revisit and extend that work. Jake gave a heads up as to its new location and we're all looking forward to visiting the space (for most if not all of us it will be our first time there). I wanted to reach out and make sure we're going about this the right way, and of course invite anyone else who interested in either robotics or BCI to join us and get involved. We look to published whatever we do as open source and will try to update the Sudo Room wiki (as my quick search and review of the mailing list archives only turned up last month's introduction). We're still firming up timing but will probably drop by tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon and play Monday and Tuesday by ear. Feel free to message me on or off list if anyone is keen. Cheers! Steve

Attention Ambulance Hackers

Anyone interested in/on hacking in/on the ambulance? I've got a few projects in mind, chiefly in gearing up for longer trips outside the bay area (aka: Burning Man), and in the short term getting around hackerspaces in the bay area to build along the way. Right now I'm tapped on space and resources, and can only drive short distance, or not at all, so would be great to find somewhere/someone nearby to work on some mechanical issues. I'd also like to double the floor space by adding storage bins and some sort of pop-up to the roof (ideally made of solar panels) to make more of a work space, and some sort of ladder to get up to it. I've also got a 16' flatbed trailer that I can pull, and would be interested in developing ideas to make that a mobile space as well, potentially something along the lines of a parkable parklet that could be moved around. We finally defeated the yeast! [inside door works again]

After many a long battles, the yeast has been defeated. [the power had been pulled from the inside door. the rubber-foreskin that holds the cables had gone loose, and as a consequence the cable had released from its conncetion under strain. we reconnected it, retaped it. and put the doormat over the rubber-foreskin.] We might have won the battle, but the access-war is ongoing. Ian and yours truly are regularly putting some hours into improving the spaghetti outside & and inside the Py.
