Wow! I'm pretty impressed that someone walked the plank and took financial
risk to get SudoRoom going. That's a lot of trust ... especially for things
as tumultuous and socially wacky as non heirarchical collectives.
first penguins, you are honored!
As documented on the wiki, I'm going to teach statistics through doodles.
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Today_I_Learned#July_20:_Statistics_through_doodl…
With the help of some doodles on paper (or possibly the floor),
I'll will explain the purpose and meaning of various measures of the
relationships between different variables (specifically covariance,
variance, correlation and least-squares regression).
This class assumes literally no knowledge of math, not even basic
arithmetic. But I'll try to skip things that people already know
as not to bore everyone.
For the symbolically inclined, I can relate the doodles to the symbols
you might have seen in an introductory statistics course.
I've done this a few times, so I have enough of a mental script that
I'd like to video it and put it on the website. I'll bring a camera.
It would be awesome if someone could bring a tripod or if someone
held my camera for part of the session. Or we could make a
tripod-alternative out of some wood, a small tripod from the closet
and some duct tape.

There's a hackathon happening in Oakland to build tools that are helpful to
transgender people
Apply by August 2
Happens on Sept 13-15
http://transhack.org/
"WHY A HACKATHON FOCUSED ON THE TRANS COMMUNITY?
Research shows that transgender people are unemployed at 2x the national
rate–4x for transgender people of color; have incomes of less than $10,00 a
year; experience homelessness at 2x the rate of non-trans people; and
suffer overwhelming discrimination when it comes to accessing adequate
healthcare and legal services. This problem not only affects transgender
adults but trans and gender nonconforming youth as well. A necessary step
in addressing anti-transgender bias is to create technology that socially
empowers transgender individuals. Imagine if there existed a mobile phone
app that helps individuals find trans friendly doctors or an app that
profiles safe space job opportunities for trans people across the country?
Trans*H4CK is a space in which to turn these possibilities into reality."

*UC Berkeley School of Information launches Master of Information and Data
Science (MIDS) degree*
Dear Alumni and Friends of the I School,
I am thrilled to share the news that the School of Information is launching
a Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) degree with the first
cohort of students starting in January 2014. This will be the country’s
first fully online Master of Information and Data Science
(MIDS)<http://my.berkeley.edu/site/R?i=jgDIsKHXfN45z35djKXw-Q>program.
The I School faculty developed this new degree in response to the rapidly
growing need for well-trained professionals who can organize, analyze, and
interpret the deluge of often messy and unorganized data now available from
the web, sensor networks, mobile devices, and elsewhere — often referred to
as “big data.”
The MIDS is a rigorous 27-unit graduate degree aimed at the working
professional. It will combine live, face-to-face classes with interactive,
online course work that can be accessed from anywhere. While the coursework
will be entirely online, all students will also participate in a one-week
immersion in Berkeley that allows them to meet one another and the faculty
as well as to interact with leading data science professionals from the San
Francisco Bay Area.
The program will provide hands-on experience with the diverse tools and
methods for exploring and finding patterns in complicated, real-world data,
and for communicating the findings with decision makers. Just like all
other degree programs at the School of Information, I School faculty will
teach in the program alongside experienced professionals.

Science program, please visit us

Hi Julio,****

Sorry for the long delay.****
** **
After going out there a couple of times, I concluded that the best location
for racks was on 22nd St. Sites for four racks (accommodating a total of 8
bikes) were marked with white dots. In late May, we mailed the ground floor
businesses and the property owner (per our usual process) and didn’t
receive any comments. (We are also adding two more racks across the street
in front of the Bruner’s Building.)****
** **
The racks were added to a work order submitted to the Public Works crews
who install them on June 7. There is currently quite a back log, so I
apologize again for the delay. I can’t tell you when they will be installed
L--it’s out of my control.****
** **
The reason I opted against the Broadway location was because of the white
zone/loading-unloading in front of the Sound Room and because removing and
replacing the two U-racks there was a bit messy because the sidewalk is in
such poor condition.****
** **
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your patience,****

Hi Jennifer,****

I was wondering what the status was of the bike racks on the SW corner of
22nd and Broadway. I can't find an email about this, but I believe that we
talked and agreed that the best solution was to remove the existing racks
there, and replace them with multiple perpendicular racks. I thought you
said it would take 3 months, but I'm pretty sure nothing has happened yet,
so I wanted to ask and make sure it was still on your radar. Let me know

Hi Jennifer,****

We talked earlier about putting a bike rack on the sidewalk in front of our
house. For the moment, those plans are on hold.****
****
However, I was wondering if the CityRacks Program would be able to put some
bike racks on the Southwest corner of Broadway at 22nd Street (on the
Broadway side). This is a commercial area and, recently, hosts a new
hackerspace called SudoRoom on the second floor of the building, where many
members use their bicycles to get there, but are forced to bring the bikes
upstairs due to the lack of safety and visibility below. This corner would
be a great location to have a pool of bike racks similar to what is in
front of the New Parkway theater on 474 24th Street. I'm not sure if those
bike racks were put up under the CityRacks program, but wanted to explore
what was possible around Broadway and 22nd. There is plenty of room, but I
don't know what kind of process we'd have to go through.****
****
Let me know if I should just submit a CityRacks request on the website.****

Thanks in advance for any guidance you are able to provide.****

Hello Julio,
First, please accept my apology for responding so late to this request.
Second, the CityRacks program installs racks in commercial areas only, not
residential areas. If the property owner wishes to install sidewalk bike
racks they can; the process is outlined here:

Put simply, everything is working except the outer door is not
actually buzzing opening when it says it does. It appears a wire came
loose between the raspi and the door buzzer. We're trying to figure
out the right way to put it back.
Unrelatedly, our internet connection is being saturated this afternoon
by UDP packets which look suspiciously like either a DDoS or (more
likely) somebody was torrenting earlier. The high network load has
made door.sudoroom.org appear down, but it still works.

hi everyone,
the elevator was emergency locked again this morning. it is definitely a
problem to have this continue to be an issue, but we are actively working
on a solution (ie, coordinating with laurie and george to ensure that we're
on the same page regarding the elevator access control system that we
installed last week & the subsequent lack of a need to manually lock the
elevator).
thank you to everyone for their patience as we resolve these issues and
thanks to everyone who's a part of the ad hoc phone tree that's been
resolving the immediate access problem whenever it arises :) you guys are
awesome!

Hi Folks,
It's that time again! I'll be firing up (after a bit of plumbing rework) the beer machine V2.0, doing some RGB LED control using accelerometers, and maybe a few other tidbits here and there. All level users welcome - I can't find the programmer I use for the scratch-build boards so won't be providing any components for those. If you're just starting out and need something to tinker with, there will probably be an extra controller or two on hand you can borrow, or if you want one to take home you can pick one up at radio shack by OG plaza last minute.

Hello,
A group of people are getting together at Sudo Room Tuesday evening at 7:30
to talk about David Bollier's work on the commons and I wanted to see if
anyone from the Sudo Room community wanted to join us. David Bollier is one
of the leading common advocates in the US, and believes the language of the
commons will allow us to think our way out of the market/state argument
that currently consumes most of what passes as political debate in this
country. This is part of an ongoing discussion group we've put together to
talk about some of the intellectuals and activists, including Bollier
himself, who are coming to Oakland in early August for a conference. For
more details about the conference or discussion group email me at
jjflevin(a)gmail.com. You'll find links to the texts we'll be looking at
below. Hope some of you can make it!
Jacob
*“The commons provides us with the ability to name and then help constitute
a new order. We need a new language that does not insidiously replicate the
misleading fictions of the old order – for example, that market growth will
eventually solve our social ills or that regulation will curb the world’s
proliferating ecological harms. We need a new discourse and new social
practices that assert a new grand narrative, a different constellation of
operating principles and a more effective order of governance. Seeking a
discourse of this sort is not a fanciful whim. It is an absolute necessity.
And, in fact, there is no other way to bring about a new order. Words
actually shape the world. By using a new language, the language of the
commons, we immediately begin to create a new culture. We can assert a new
order of resource stewardship, right livelihood, social priorities and
collective enterprise.” *
The primary text we'll look at is David Bollier and Silke Helfrich's
introduction to the recently published "Wealth of Commons":
http://wealthofthecommons.org/essay/introduction-commons-transformative-vis…
For those who want more explicit example of what this resurgence of the
commons looks like, this article he wrote back in 2001 looks at how
community gardens, open source software and blood banks can all be best
described using the language of the commons:
http://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/reclaiming-the-commons/the-cornucopia-of-…
And if anyone would rather listen/watch instead of read, this interview
offers a great window into how Bollier thinks about the world:

Fridays at sudo room: POSSE [Potluck Orientation Skill-share Swap-meet
Event) Parties!
Bring some food to share and meet local visionaries creating a more
cooperative economy through alternative currencies such as timebanking,
skill-share and resource-exchange circles.
This is a family-friendly event, and childcare will be provided. Thinking
this is also a great way to make one of our weekly 'Hacker Happy Hours'
more family-friendly and health-oriented (though of course, no beverage
turned away!).
I'll be printing fliers at sudo today and will leave some on the main
table. It would be great if folks could help with outreach, so grab a few
fliers and post them up at your coffeeshop / community center / library /
public space of choice!
Event is on the sudo room calendar:

And there's also a FB event - please join if you plan on coming, and invite
your friends!

Timebank for putting this on :)

Hi all,
If anyone is interested in a kick-ass garage sale this Saturday, come check
out Central Self Storage in Alameda:
http://www.centralselfstorage.com/p/self_storage/directions/alameda-ca-9450…
This place is walking distance from our 84-unit apartment building that
will be closing down next month, so I expect there will be way more great
stuff for sale than usual. Carla and I will be there all day (8am-3pm),
trying to get rid of some really nice pieces, including some Indonesian and
African carvings, various statues, large glass bottle vases, some
furniture, etc.
In other words - Come buy some of our crap, so we don't have to move it!
Some of it is really nice crap too!
