So.
I am totally with the idea of distributing the know-how of facilitation.
But the proposed plan of there being a meta-facilitator guiding the
facilitators of each section didn't come to pass, and the meeting was drawn
out by dint there not being expected limits on discussion topics.
Good moderators in general set expectations for a discussion by declaring
how many minutes should be spent on it, and by qualifying what counts as
"in scope" for the meeting and what should be moved to another time.
Tonight there were lots of topics on the meeting agenda, but that wasn't
what drew it out to 10:15pm. What drew it out was the combination of:
* lack of time limits on discussions
* lack of sense of scope on discussions
* unwillingness to create "pointers" to extra-meeting discussions, email,
etc.
You have to do these things, and you can't guilt people into attendance
when they tune out and attend to other things because they have no sense of
the progression of things.
And I'm going to restate a previous point I've made about bureaucracy.
There's this tendency to privilege the discussion of
rules/regulations/policies above everything else when it comes to general
meetings.
When I say "privilege" I mean "give more time and leeway to".
You have to resist this urge. Discussion of policy isn't fundamentally any
more important than discussion of culture, or events, or fiscal solvency,
etc. It's all *equally important*... by which I mean like Five Minutes
important. Because if you multiply out all the subpoints in each section
of any given agenda by 5 minutes, you easily get an hour or more.

Hey everyone--have any of you heard of the San Jose SubZero festival?
It's Friday, June 7th and celebrates the underground. think mexigoths, fire
sculptures, rockabilly bands and skaters and street art!
Yes--I know it's weird.. it's San Jose! we all have a lot of ideas about
San Jose. I was there for about two years and the people running the
subzero are very legit. Despite the high rents, fairly cookie cutter
atmosphere cherri + brian from anno domini have been keeping the
underground alive... they also run the $5 for art tuesdays and support low
cost local events by local artists down there.
*cherri isn't making money off this--none of her crew is. they break even
every year... *
*
*
*if anyone is interested in carpoling with me down to san jose to have a
table or do some crazy art projection experiment, let me know. I'll be
chatting with people about this.*
*san jose is highly suburban and has especially high rent prices, some parts
worse than san francisco. the arts have a tough ttime down there, despite a
nice downtown layout and a university.*
*
*
*subzero festival makes things easier... they were asking if we wanted to
do a game/play/experiemnt.*
*
*
*it's in june... so would love to get in conversation with folks about this
now!*

Hi! It's time for our annual convergence of all you *Progenitors of Culture*
!
It's been a very tough year for everyone, and yet, here we all still
are....we have not wavered in our determination to be who we are, to live
the life we dream of and build the city we want to live in.
The 6th Annual SubZERO Festival is one of the most amazing celebrations of
the indie, DIY, subculture and counter culture experiences and it's
because of YOU and we want you back this year! Your participation shows you
don't just "do" art, but you ARE an artist and you're in it for a long term
life and career. We have had many success stories result from the festival
- we've had participants use the momentum of the fan base they've
cultivated from SubZERO to launch their own brick & mortar store fronts of
their own, works of art are in homes of collectors and artists have been
invited into other active collectives, indie entrepreneurs have had their
product picked up by big retail brands and the festival has served as a
catalyst for artists to receive national/international inquiries to show
and perform.
And don't underestimate that the crowd will be "the same" - San Jose is
notorious for new surges of residents from all over the world to work in
the tech industry we're known for (and seems to be flourishing once again)
and these new comers experience the perception that we're a cultural
wasteland....NOT TRUE and this festival changes those perceptions
immediately but we can only change those perceptions if you're out there to
show them!
That's what we do....we create and inspire and thrive. And we do it *
TOGETHER.*
----------------------------------------- 2013 SubZERO Festival
Information
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's our annual gathering of the Progenitors of Culture otherwise known as
the Sixth Annual *SubZERO Festival*!
Focused on emerging and present subcultures thriving in our region, SubZERO
is a DIY, artistically bent, hi/lo-techno mashup where street meets geek.
You're receiving this first round of invitations because we are grateful to
you for your past participation. You've helped build the festival into a
highly anticipated celebration of subculture artists, performers & creative
indie businesses. You've been here all day, every day, all year long doing
what you know to be the most challenging thing in your life but you do it
with determination and uncompromising values. This is the night we get to
share that work and know that there are others that appreciate it, get
inspired by it and want to connect with it. You push the arts, culture and
humanity forward, and so "thank you!" in advance for not just this one
event, but for all that you do always.
Like last year, this festival is DIY....We all bring it to make it happen.
Vendor spaces will be the standard 10' x 10'. You'll need to bring
everything you'll need to exhibit, display, perform and/or sell your work.
We highly encourage live painting, demos and /or participatory activities
with your audience. (please let us know what you have in mind if it
involves sound or roving performances, etc.)
-Ellectricity (via generators) will be provided.
- One artist / entity per booth
-Additional space discounts available.
Last year our attendance was about 14,000 people. We expect at least the
same, if not more, again this year. Although city fees and festival costs
have risen, we are offering you the same rates as last year if you *SIGN UP
BY APRIL 30th.*
DATES:
*SubZERO Festival: *First Friday June 7th., 6pm-midnight
*STREET MRKTs:* First Friday Aug. 2nd, 7pm-11pm
First Friday Sept. 6th, 7pm-11pm
*2013 Vendor fees for returning artists /vendors from last year*
(please note that this is rate is just for past participants and only good
thru April 30th, so please let us know as soon as possible)
*
*
*SubZERO Only* (June 7th)- $165.
*Street Mrkts *(Aug 3, Sept 7)- $65. / each Mrkt
(this is a smaller, more intimate urban faire held outside of Anno Domini
Gallery in conjunction with the Aug & Sept art walk so artists have direct
access to the art walk audience.) Street Mrkt space is limited so if you're
interested in these, we encourage you to sign up for the 3 Pkg Deal below.
*3 Pkg Deal* - $245. for all 3 events (SubZERO June + Street Mrkts in Aug &
Sept)

Please let me know if you have any questions. We're reaching out to you
first and then will open it up to newcomers so please reserve your spot if
you'd like to be part of the festival, we'd love to have you!

Hi, i'm throwing this out there for chez hack. I can do ios mobile location
based stuff, a very simple app that's hooked up to a web dashboard that
would be great for mapping out hacker spaces or neighborhoods through
geofencing.
It also has image recognition that's better than QR codes, that would
recognize a photograph.
it's using a commercial SDK though (Qualcomm's Gimbal) so that's the
caveat... but I think if anyone's down for interesting ideas with that, it
would be a fun project!

Hol and Naomi,
I agree with and support your locker idea completely. Self-funding
investments until profitability is a model we need to start.
I propose the price be $100 / m^3 to start.

i think it would be a good idea to throw in a few lockers and have people
sign up for recurring payments in order to reserve them. if seems like a
good idea, i'd be willing to buy them if i can be reimbursed AFTER the
locker program breaks even.

Part of the equation seen on
Valenzettiequation.com<http://wiki/Valenzettiequation.com>,
though this may not necessarily be canon <http://wiki/Canon>.
*The Valenzetti Equation* is the mathematical equation developed by the
reclusive Princeton University mathematician Enzo
Valenzetti<http://wiki/Enzo_Valenzetti>.
Its creation was the result of efforts made following the Cuban Missile
Crisis by the United States and the Soviet Union to find a solution to the
hostility and danger of imminent global disaster created by the Cold War.
The equation was secretly commissioned through the UN Security Council and
is used to predict the time of human extinction.
According to the 1975 orientation film <http://wiki/Orientation_film> in
the Sri Lanka Video <http://wiki/Sri_Lanka_Video>, the Valenzetti Equation
"predicts the exact number of years and months until humanity extinguishes
itself."

Unknown man writing the Valenzetti Equation on a chalkboard in the Sri
Lanka Video.
During the video, Alvar Hanso <http://wiki/Alvar_Hanso> also states that
the radio transmitter on the Island <http://wiki/Radio_Tower>, will
"broadcast the core numerical values of the Valenzetti Equation." The
numbers <http://wiki/The_numbers>: 4 <http://wiki/4>, 8
<http://wiki/8>, 15<http://wiki/15>,
16 <http://wiki/16>, 23 <http://wiki/23> and 42 <http://wiki/42> are
explained in the Sri Lanka Video <http://wiki/Sri_Lanka_Video> as the
numerical values to the core environmental and human factors of the
Valenzetti Equation. Alvar Hanso also states in the video that the purpose
of the DHARMA Initiative <http://wiki/DHARMA_Initiative> is to change the
numerical values of any one of the core factors in the equation in order to
give humanity a chance to survive by, effectively, changing doomsday.
However, Thomas Mittelwerk <http://wiki/Thomas_Mittelwerk> reveals that as
of 2006, they have failed to change the values through manipulating the
environment, as the equation continues to arrive at the same six numbers.
It is unknown how or if the most recent calculation of the equation is
automatically reflected in the radio transmissions.
Rachel Blake <http://wiki/Rachel_Blake> also learned that the Hanso
Foundation was forcing savants at the Vik
Institute<http://wiki/Vik_Institute>in Iceland to run the equation
over and over. Somehow, five
hieroglyphic <http://wiki/Hieroglyphics> symbols were involved in the
calculations (Armand Zander <http://wiki/Armand_Zander> described them as
"representative"), the same hieroglyphs seen on the countdown
timer<http://wiki/Countdown_timer>in the
Swan <http://wiki/The_Swan> station.
The Blast Door Map <http://wiki/Blast_Door_Map> included a reference to the
equation; a zone on the island is marked as being of "low relevance to
Valenzetti-related research activity".

A person from The Public School wanted to do a screening of Vanishing of

this month in the common space. I wanted to check if that is okay. I tried
to put it on the calendar but it appears broken (plug-in needs updating FYI)
I also wanted to share that we are doing a game/event on Saturday May 4th

are still working out details but the original info is here:

Also wanted to float the idea of a "meeting of the minds/party" between the
groups that share the suite. A chance to learn more about the various
projects happening at sudoroom/the public school/ and others, network and
interface. Like Hacker Happy hour but with a little more structured
discussion. Just a thought
Oh and the suggestion for a class on the history of telecom systems would
be awesome.
