Omni needs a loan!

It's nice to have the Omni Commons building so that we can have sudoroom in it (and for other reasons) unfortunately we have to find a new loan, since our present one expires in December, and we will have to come up with almost $900,000 and the only way to do that is with another loan. We have the building as collateral, and it's worth a lot, but for various reasons it's not as easy to get a loan as you might think. Does anyone want to work on this so we don't lose the building? Literally we have no prospects right now. -jake

I’d like to start posting more peoples personal projects here if they are not on the blog Thinking about maybe doing a today I learned which we used to do 10 years ago. The topics were pretty cool back then they range from Mads to Computer Science to stuff like cooking. I think I can’t remember. Also, now that everything‘s opening up again it’s pretty cool I’m hanging out at the mechanics library in mannys in San Francisco mission there is so much stuff going on involved with a local community. I’m just trying to think of ways to bring that stuff back to Sudoroom because I definitely do bring it but it’s all inside my head like I’m going to go see the SF opera folks talk about the stuff that they’re doing at the Mechanics’ library tomorrow night. Had to bring stuff like that into the Sudoroom like also a Mechanics’ library has a big chess club. Maybe they can do a chest and I’ll ballroom someday I’m not sure it’s like something like that would be like really cool I think. Sent from my iPhone

4/19/23 Meeting (Jonathan)

We didn't exactly have much of a meeting tonight, but progress was still made. - We talked about what to do with the recent influx of Chromebooks that came in. Most of them currently cannot be used because the Fremont School District hasn't de-authorized them yet, so they're hard locked to those Google Accounts, and can't even be properly wiped. This may resolve itself soon, as we were told they would be deauthorized soon. - Discussions about what OS we want to favor for the laptops we're giving away were also had. There's a tradeoff to be had between favoring stability/simplicity (e.g. Debian) or more frequently updated distros (e.g. Arch) which offer a wider variety of packages. - I brought in some linux install CDs/DVDs, along with a a CD of rEFInd, as I noticed we didn't have any install media that just "belonged" to sudoroom, for anybody to use. I left them on the cart under the TV; please don't take them home, so that the next person who needs them can use them too. - I also brought in a keyboard. Ideally I'd like for us to have a couple of "shop" keyboards that are kept relatively clean and accessible, so that we can use them whenever. Not sure of the best way to do this right now. - I proposed an idea to draw new people to sudoroom by offering a "learn linux" program. I'm thinking we can take some of the older laptops/mac minis/whatevers, and show interested people how to build linux systems from a minimal install (i.e. week 1: basic terminal stuff; week 2: adding a display manager/xorg/window manager; etc.) The idea seemed well received, but I wanted to see who all would be interested in participating, and if anyone had ideas about how we could let people know about this. I was going to propose doing it on a couple of wednesdays a month, or Friday if those are open. - It looks like two of the newer mac minis were found - these have HDMI ports, so they're easy enough to hook up to any monitor. Some folks wanted to keep OSX on them. --Jonathan

Chromebooks (was) 4/19/23 Meeting (Jonathan)

The serial numbers have been submitted to Fremont Unified School District IT so the Chromebooks can be de-provisioned from Google Enterprise Enrollment. After that they can have their write-protect screws removed and any alternative OS (Linux-based, probably) can be installed. I'd love if Sudoroom would build out a practice to help students and residents remove write protection, install an alternative OS, and empower them to get the most out of that alternative OS.
