Javascript Thursdays renamed to Programming everywhere! everything! all at once!

I attended my first thursday javascript session and everyone agreed to rename it Progrmaming! everything! everywhere! all at once! I stuck Michelle Yeoh on the flyer if that's ok (I don't want to make stuff too commercial but her hot dog fingers and the movie reminded us that stuff is always perpetually changing) Last session we talked about using chatGPT. Even though it's trendy it was a cool debate, and someone used it to create a learning curriculum for learning programming, and even had it construct lessons plans that he was tweaking. The conversation got a little spicy we talked about if chat gpt would replace teachers (some people thought it would, some though it wouldn't.). need a Molex Micro Fit 3.0 8-pin connector

i'm looking for a connector (with wires already on it ideally but i'll take the kit if that's what's available) like this: https://www.molex.com/pdm_docs/sd/436450800_sd.pdf number 43645-0800 which is the eight-pin connector but i also happen to need two of the two-pin ones, although those are less of a problem for me right now. I'm talking about the "plug" end which has holes for metal pins to stick into, from a connector that mounts on a board. I need the end that goes on wires. thank you! -jake

do you have plastic straws we can use for bike lights?

weird question but i'm looking for plastic drinking straws to use for bike wheel lights. I know they're illegal in california so i figure people probably have some stashed and hoarded and don't want to give them up, but we need them. we're planning another bike light making session and then a bikelight installing event before the next East Bay Bike Party, which happens on February 11th from Rockridge BART (nearby sudoroom!) I want to make lights like these to go on wheels: https://www.radlicht.com/store/products/radlicht-bike-wheel-light-red/ we have tons of battery holders with switches, plus we can make some sort of automatic thing to turn them on - not sure how to do that yet so suggestions are welcome! Probably a two-state tilt thing that charges a capacitor to turn on a FET to turn on the lights, so it only takes power when the wheel is turning. -jake

occultation

Hey Peter, Thanks for drawing my attention to the occultation. It was fun to watch even with the light pollution we have in the city. When mars got very close to the moon, my eyes couldn't see it because the moon is so much brighter but the Griffith Park telescope in LA streamed the view of the setting and rising of mars nicely. Partial Occultation of Mars by Moon Tonight

Tonight (Jan 30th) in the early evening, there is a very interesting astronomical event -- an occultation of the planet Mars by the Moon. A full occultation (eclipse) of Mars is visible all across the southern portion of the United States (and further south). For the Bay Area, the Moon will narrowly miss Mars. You have to be south of a line from approximately Soledad through Fresno to see Mars fully covered by the Moon. Closest approach is about 8:54pm PST for the Bay Area. The orange-red color of Mars will make a striking contrast with the silver-white surface of the Moon. This event can be seen naked-eye, but binoculars or a small telescope will definitely help. Laser cutter.

This is just a heads up about the laser cutter. PLEASE make sure the chiller is operating/on when you are using the laser. IF you do not know what the chiller is you SHOULD NOT be using the laser cutter. I found the chiller unplugged due to something laying on the power cord causing it to become detached. If we are not vigilant in the start up step of the laser sudoroom will not have one due to operator error. Not wanting to be a castigator just wanting people to know that stupid things like a badly placed object can be the end of great equipment. cc

Proposal: Sudo Room should organize working groups to coordinate core functions

Hey Sudoers, I'd like to submit a proposal in advance of a meeting next *Wednesday, January 11th at 8 PM:* *The proposal: *I propose we organize working groups for membership, facilities, finances, promotion, and general administration. *The goals:* I think we should focus in 2023 on bringing in new people. Hosting more events. Finding new sources of revenue like grants. Organizing the tools, repairing the roof, and installing a mezzanine. I think all of these would be more attainable if we had a bit of structure that makes it easier for new people -- and old! -- to find similarly minded collaborators and organize and communicate to do these things collaboratively. *The details: *I see three elements to this proposal, which I'm listing to make it easier to offer suggestions or alterations: *1)* I think we should define a set of core functions which require coordination: membership, facilities, finances, promotion, and administration (miscellaneous general operation). *2)* I think we should promote coordination by establishing working groups, primarily consisting of an email list and a wiki page, but with broad leeway in how each group wants to organize and communicate. The facilities working group could decide to set up a Discord channel. The building group could choose to have regular in person meetings. The admin group could operate mostly on Signal. These don't have to be dictated in this proposal, as long as everyone knows how to get in touch with these working groups. *3)* I propose that participation and role assignment be presumed open, but managed by the groups themselves. I am actively choosing not to propose that they groups have a leader or a minimum number of participants, or a qualification to join. As proposed, I imagine anyone who likes fixing 3D printers when they clog can sign up for the facilities working group and now they're an equal member to everyone else. But if the membership working group is just one person answering new member questions, that's fine. The finance group and promotion group will presumably set guidelines on who has login credentials for accounts. Under this proposal, anyone can join any group and no member of a group has elevated privileges unless they establish them by consensus separate from this proposal. What do you all think? Would you like to join any of these groups? I'd like to get lots of feedback and then discuss this next Wednesday to incorporate the feedback received over email. Do people have video snippets for a sudoroom overview on the front page?

I'd like to put something more fresh on the front page as a video. While there is stuff on instagram, it's a PITA to download it (or is it?) I think we can even make simple videos off screenshots, but stuff like the robot arm moving is pretty nice. If you have anything could you please email me or put it in a common folder?
