We used to have a regular event every week - years ago - called JavaScript
Thursdays!
Wouldn't it be neat if we had another regular weekly event? It doesn't have
to be focused on a particular type of activity but having a regular event for
a while really makes things happen.
anyone interested?

Hi friends,
I was thinking of calling a meeting to optimistically discuss the future of
the Sudo Room.
For a while I have been discussing with friends how I feel sudo should
launch and support initiatives which directly improve the material
conditions of the people in the Oakland Community. And I think it should be
done with a focus on inclusivity of Black and Brown folks.
*I would be excited if we had initiatives like:*
- An initiative to provide Direct support for local families and
individuals
- An initiative to Support prison abolition efforts
- An initiative to oppose to war crimes in Gaza or assistance for recent
undocumented immigrants
I have a lot of my own Ideas, but I am super interested in hearing
everyone's Ideas about different services we can offer!
Secondly I think it is important we have an actual *Mission Statement* for
who we are and what we want to accomplish. This will be great to provide
clarity for what are needs are assuming everything goes well with CAST.
This will allow us to plan for the growth and success of our projects and
services in the future.
If we can have a meeting this Weds we could discuss these two Items, and
maybe we could bring some food and make it a bit of a party.
Please reply with ideas if you like.
William
Hi Sudoroom folks! I'm blown away by the kindness and generosity you all have shown me in my first couple of visits to the Sudoroom for fix it night. I haven't had as much fun (and haven't been nearly as productive) in quite a while. I'm the guy who showed up with all the Nintendo games. Anyway, all this is to say that I'm grateful for the access to the space and the great, interesting and knowledgeable people that inhabit it during the fix it hours.
Unfortunately, I recently contracted the flu and it's really been bad - fatigue, headaches, the works. I'll need to take another week to recuperate, but I expect to be back next week with all the parts for my current project.

Hi all,
On Tuesday, myself and a couple other people are gonna be spending our Fix
it Clinic time reformatting laptops to give to students (I am hoping to do
the giving through The Unity Council and the Displacement Avoidance
Project). This is, in part, to assist in opening up Sudo Room's resources
to our Oakland community more, and in part to help us offload some of the
laptops sitting around Sudo to make more room in the space/prevent them
from sitting forever and becoming Ewaste. In order to ensure Sudo and Omni
get acknowledged for doing this (which is important for grants) and also
making sure the recipients know where to take the laptops for the purpose
of getting repairs, are there any Sudo Room or Omni stickers with the
address to the building on them?
If you'd like to join us for this, I plan to be there by no later than
8:15, with cookies for anyone who would like to help.
Hope to see you all there,
-July
Starting off a series on learning at SudoRoom and beyond!
We had a nice time as I said Monday. I feel it worked best with no hybrid,
remote participation, and getting away from our laptop screens was the best
possible way of interacting and talking to each other.

While you are browsing online, you could be squandering memories – or
losing important information.
Working memory enables us to filter out information and find what we need
in the communication, says Erik Fransén, Professor in Computer Science at
KTH.
Contrary to common wisdom, an idle brain is in fact doing important work –
and in the age of constant information overload, it’s a good idea to go
offline on a regular basis, says one KTH researcher.
Erik Fransén, whose research focuses on short-term memory and ways to treat
diseased neurons, says that a brain exposed to a typical session of social
media browsing can easily become hobbled by information overload. The
result is that less information gets filed away in your memory.
The problem begins in a system of the brain commonly known as the working
memory, or what most people know as short-term memory. That’s the system of
the brain that we need when we communicate, Fransén says.
“Working memory enables us to filter out information and find what we need
in the communication,” he says. “It enables us to work online and store
what we find online, but it’s also a limited resource.”
Models show why it has limits. At any given time, the working memory can
carry up to three or four items, Fransén says. When we attempt to stuff
more information in the working memory, our capacity for processing
information begins to fail.
“When you are on Facebook, you are making it harder to keep the things that
are ‘online’ in your brain that you need,” he says. “In fact, when you try
to process sensory information like speech or video, you are going to need
partly the same system of working memory, so you are reducing your own
working memory capacity.
“And when you try to store many things in your working memory, you get
less good at processing information.”
Watch Crosstalks TV
See Erik Fransén discuss information overload with other experts on Crosstalks
TV.
<http://crosstalks.tv/talks/have-our-brains-reached-information-overload/>
You’re also robbing the brain of time it needs to do some necessary
housekeeping. The brain is designed for both activity and relaxation, he
says. “The brain is made to go into a less active state, which we might
think is wasteful; but probably memory consolidation, and transferring
information into memory takes place in this state. Theories of how memory
works explain why these two different states are needed.
“When we max out our active states with technology equipment, just because
we can, we remove from the brain part of the processing, and it can’t work.”

hey mr. maroukis (sorry I'm bad with names) - I set up a wiki. I'm swamped
right now but will find a way to do online as well in the coming months!
I am not against software learning and edtech, but I find that overreliance
on this stuff leads to people promoting a company or start-up, plus were
trying to incorporate creative analog learning as well. But we can have
segments that are just on laptop learning as well.

Hi All!
I'm writing to thank you all for your willingness to attend Wod Street's
resource fair and block party. We'd love it if people tabling can show up
by noon but we also totally understand time constraints- if you can only
join us for a few hours you are still hugely welcome and appreciated. If
you need a table or chairs, I think there is some limited tables available
but we're a little short on those so if you are bring your own, that's
amazing.
See you soon!

I’ve been using a home made electric door lock for years, it’s got that
exposed wires delight ♥️
I’m looking for an actually reliable electric door lock that I can
reasonably easily hack to use my own software or replace the

Do any of you have a recommendation?
Hi all,
A little off topic from normal but we're having a community BBQ for the

Given the time it takes for external transfers to come in, the only way to
pay this in time to my understanding is to transfer money from either the
SR and/or SMAC account to pay this bill [because SR and SMAC also have
funds in Unify account, so its not external]. The amount transferred could
be quickly returned after other collectives pay rent + from a donation that
was offered.
The amount still needed to transfer temporarily from SR/SMAC would need to
total around $1800. Is this okay with collectives, especially SR and SMAC?
It is very crucial we pay our mortgage payment, especially given that
Mulberry is still deliberating whether or not to foreclose on us.

Hi All,
I've written a Donald Trump satire, and would like to get it out into the
public as quickly as possible for obvious reasons. It's an update of a
previous version that I self-published on Amazon (KDP). Below are reviews
from that book (it's been updated). I also included a copy of the cover.
The work is ostensibly a briefing and guide book written for DJT by staff
for when he becomes the president again in 2025.
I've been a professional comedian and comedy-writer, but I'm a technical
moron and can't figure out how to put this book up on a website, or on
Substack. Since time is short, my plan is to offer it for free and ask for
donations at the end. I would like to hire someone to get it up on an
appropriate venue.
If interested, contact me, I'll email you the entire book (about 80 pages)
and we can discuss.
Best,
Ira Brightman

There’s a lot of Trump humor out there, but Ira’s stands out because it’s
clever, and unique (the “Meet [insert dictator/world leader]” sections were
my favorite), and just a delight to read. Also, if you don’t laugh at Ira’s

On May 6th, Sierk's computer was hacked by someone in Omni Commons who
accessed his computer when he left it unattended. They took over his
Facebook account, replacing it with a "Dillinger - Public Enemy No1" logo
and sent direct messages to me, and to another person at Omni who was
hacked in the same way a few weeks earlier.
They also took over Sierk's Google account including his telephone number,
and created a Signal account with his number, and communicated to me from
all those accounts claiming to be Sierk.
I finally talked with Sierk in person (on May 7th) and confirmed that none
of the accounts were in his control, and he had no way of getting back
control of his Google account. Last night he asked me (in person) to tell
people at the Omni that they should disregard messages appearing to come
from him (including over SMS/text messaging), which are now asking for
money.
*Sierk says that people should ONLY trust in-person communications with him
for the time being. *He can often be found at Omni, working on his
computer upstairs.

Awesome, I would love to hear more about your japanese notecard approach.
I'm an unabashed Obsidian + Anki user - and I think there are
tools/scripts/plugings that can resurface content "just in time" -- but
there is a danger of throwing everything in a digital file never to be seen
again.
How about a show and tell of current systems, would you be able to do a
recording at Sudoroom and I will set one up at THS? For me it will have to
be next month.
Some other questions:
- how do you begin to know what you don't know? How to create a syllabus
for a new domain of knowledge - what is too deep and what is too shallow -
mind mapping, skill trees etc
- how to organize analog notes - how to do "analog search"
- gamifying learning so that you actually want to review the things you
studied
- project based learning - how can you learn something new through a
project, but not get frustrated that you don't know the thing you are
trying to learn through the project...
- sharing list of resources, hackerspace wikis etc

I want to say that I’m sorry for the inappropriate email I sent out banning
Trevor. I thoughtlessly sent out an email full of complaints from a third
party which should have been kept private. This was a violation of both
parties' privacy, and contains a lot of harmful and dehumanizing language
that no one should have to experience. And worse, the unequal treatment of
a POC constitutes a racist double standard. I want to apologize for the
harm I’ve caused, and the damage and trauma I’ve caused by making POC in
our community feel unwelcome and targeted.
I sent out the message after receiving multiple complaints on multiple
channels, giving it a sense of intensity and urgency and was concerned
there was some immediate ongoing incident which now doesn’t seem to be
true. We have caught a lot of flack for not having a way to respond to
urgent issues, but I was not in a good mental state to be responding to
incidents, and was irresponsible for me to share this information. It was
illogical for me to respond at all, Safe Space Bans are only for people in
the building who feel unsafe, and other longer term bans are handled in
committee.
Again I want to say that I’m sorry for the harm that I’ve caused and
endangering our community. I hope I can regain the trust of those affected
by my actions.

I like this article. Nice points here
the term "Digital de escalation"
I am rethinking my way of learning and using technology. While I cannot
live without tablets and laptops, and my electronic pencil, reintroducing
paper notebooks, flashcards and print books has improved my productivity
greatly.
I think digital deescalation and working out ways to reduce online learning
is going to be a new future trend!
https://ethic.es/english/tech-savvy-sweden-leads-global-push-to-ban-screens…
"Dans adds that in the case of Spain, in many places «the tablet and the
pad or the traditional book already coexist. Many teachers will tell you
how drawing, touch, handwriting help development, memory and creativity.
Digital tools are useful, but we must combine them with handwriting and
traditional reading. Learning to ride an electric scooter is fine, but you
have to know how to walk first»."

>>> re: what do you do with analog notes
Yes I'm fascinated by this too. I find electronic notetaking much too
ephemeral for true learning, it's also dangerous to pack all your knowledge
in the same device that has your social media, LinkedIn, etc.
I am experimenting with locking my iPad, having two tablets. There are
settings where you can remove social media etc. as well.
I use Goodnotes and Notion heavily, I know people use Obsidian. How do we
use these systems effectively? I'm starting to believe that it's harmful to
rely entirely on ebooks and electronics though.

We need pictures of sudoroom and the people in it doing cool stuff! We're
making a presentation for potential lenders who need to see how awesome
sudoroom is!
Presently missing pictures of people hacking raw electronics, using the
laser cutter, and the wood shop and lathe!
Try to upload links to pictures, rather than the pictures themselves, if
you have a Google photos link for example. Or if you only are able to email
the pictures, just email them to me not to the list!
Hello SUDO,
I'm sorry to announce that the Foreclosure is moving forward and will have
~ 90 days to come up with around 1 million dollars or the building can be
sold.
- We will keep the ball rolling with our conversations with CAST to
potentially come up with the needed funds
- We will of course be looking into any other funding options, ideas are
always welcome
Best
William
*Below is correspondence and some notes from our Lawyer: *
*Just wanted to let you know that the Mulberry Trust will be proceeding
with foreclosing on the property. A new trustee will be taking over the
work and proceed with the foreclosure. Mulberry Trust also wanted to let
you know that they'll be adding a late fee of $283.90 to the principal
since Omni didn't make a payment for April. Once the foreclosure is filed,
they won't be able to accept any further payments. It's truly unfortunate
that this happened but the MT did not have any other choice given the
circumstances, and it does not look like there will be an assignment of the
note to another individual or entity. *
*Below is an email I sent you previously regarding the timeline and Omni's
right to pay the debt even after foreclosure begins. Note that the longer
you wait, the more legal incurred by lender Omni will have to pay. Let me
know if there's any way I can help.*
*----*
*If they proceed as quickly as possible, they can schedule a*
*foreclosure sale no sooner than 90 days after the date on which theyrecord
a notice of default. Because the loan is a commercial loan, itis on a fast
timeline.1. They have to give you notice of recording the notice of
default. After the notice of default is recorded, the lender has to mail,
post, record and publish a notice of sale.Omni has a right to pay the debt
up to 5 business days before theforeclosure sale date. (See Civil Code
Section 2924c(e). The dateis extended in various ways if the foreclosure
sale doesn't happen.*
Speaking to folks at Noisebridge, but I'm thinking of starting a learning
how to learn subgroup at SudoRoom.
This would include topics such as:
- Switching back to analog for notetaking and learning
- Mixing analog notes and ebooks
- doing digital detox on your laptops and phones and tablets so that they
become learning devices instead of consumption devices
- Creating a picture of new technologies like AI which seem to be
constantly changing
I'm not sure what a good time to meet for this would be... I'm guessing
Tuesday? I am not sure I can come in this week though! I have job
interviews. But I think cross meeting between SudoRoom, Noisebridge and
other spaces is ideal!

*There’s a lot of Trump humor out there, but Ira’s stands out because it’s
clever, and unique (the “Meet [insert dictator/world leader]” sections were

Last week was pretty great!
- I held down the fort and explored web-based virtual reality projects
during the women and nonbinary hack and do whatever nights. In the middle
of job searching so can't do much more but I plan a workshop on Blender +
web virtual reality between all headsets.
Tuesday hacker night
Continues to be cool. I went and haven't had time to mess with the robot,
but Jake is making progress. Had a dream of one day hooking up a virtual
reality headset with a game controller to the robot so that people with a
Quest or VisionPro could view the space with their headsets and interact
with people.
Maybe there's a cheaper open source way to do it with webcams. That would
be cool! Might be a future project.
More people coming to the space that I met at Augmented reality hackathons.
It's cool! Hope we can get more artsy people in too.
It's just great to be able to socialize and talk in the space. While we do
talk start-up shop talk, it's nice to have a space where you're not
pressured to monetize by VCs.
The last sessions at SudoRoom have been fun, I had time to explore and
hack. While it's nice to see presentations by outside people, it's nice to
return to the roots of sudoroom, which is using it as a hackerspace.
For orientation maybe we can have "here's how to contribute to the wiki"
We had a nice session two weeks back where many people expressed interest
in using Blender. So a "Blender for noobies" event.
The MADE game museum in Old oakland has meetups wednesdays for digital
creators. Would like to involve them with SudoRomo, especially around light
projectors Just don't have time lately.
Women who code has disbanded, which leaves a big spaces for people who want
to meet. Fortunately and unfortunately most women's groups revolve around
people who are looking for a job =P While I'm an idealist and want to have
spaces for people who love programming for the fun of it (long term I think
these people are also more employable) will probably plan some "get a job"
leetcode heck meetups for the women and non binary night.
Some not so fun stuff:
There are a number of VC-funded "third space" "hackerspaces" popping up in
San Francisco mostly. They are great, but I've noticed some of them are
planting people in SudoRoom sometimes to get them to go to those for profit
spaces. It's a strong hunch I believe to be true, but if you are doing so,
please be transparent.
Have had encounters with people who come to hackerspaces (they won't be
named) using it as a dating service. FYI sudoroom and Noisebridge are not
dating services for guys desperate to have a girlfriend. I have yet to meet
a cool woman who comes to hackerspaces who is hot to date guys there.
Dating apps are great for that kind of thing, and there are speed-dating
meetups in the city.

Hello Folks,
The meeting with CAST was incredibly sweet and wholesome. They shared more
about their values. We shared a number of our existing problems OMNI has
had in the past, we also shared the essence of who we are, what we do, and
what we believe. They appeared to be genuinely impressed and excited. We
also gave them a tour of the building.
While they didn’t give us much information on whether they have intention
to help us with our many needs, I believe they see hard work that has gone
into the OMNI, the positive outcomes it has delivered in the past, as well
as the potential it has for great things in the future.
The next meeting is on May 1 (6:30-8PM) to discuss representation and
experience for QTBIPOC Collective Members. If you are QTBIPOC and would
like to attend please reach out.
We should invite QTBIPOC folks to represent their experience at SUDO, if
you know someone who you feel would be at this please reach out to them
directly.
*Feel free to:*
- Invite members to this event personally
- Reply to this thread if you are interested in attending.
- Email Directly to confirm attendance (williamrmyers(a)gmail.com)
I'm Looking forward to working with them to make great things happen!
Best
William
Hung out at SudoRoom last night, met some cool people and am continuing to
bring new and fresh faces to the hackerspace!
I'm still exploring web hosting of virtual reality. Aframe is a promising
framework and this would make for a clean and easy workshop!

It's great socializing with folks.

I'm all in on augmented reality. I'm still thinking a lot about light
projection.
I have been busy, haven't had time to stop by. Will try to make it to
hardware hack night Tuesdays!
One positive change is that I've been minimizing as much as possible the
presentations I've had to look at this week. I think I just saw too many.
Another thing is, I'd like to come to sudoroom and focus entirely on
hacking. I feel like I was on that track, but really cool people would
distract me and try to get me into that the past few weeks.

Recently the OMNI has experienced some serious safety issues, including a
situation that resulted in police being called into the space. The
delegates are asking for volunteers that can be available generally to
respond to safety issues relating to Safe Space Bans, and other safety
issues...
- responding quickly to Safe Space bans
- making sure building access is revoked for banned people
- making sure that the Process's for safe space bans, as well as and a
process for reporting unsafe behavior, are publicly visible and available
in the space.
This will likely be formalized into an official committee later on, which
will include de-escalation training, but for now we would like to ask for
more volunteers.
If you have time for helping improve Safety at SUDO and OMNI please reach
out!
Thanks
William
Last night was quite magical! It reminded me of why I love hackerspaces so
much.
I invited 5 or 6 cool people from AI and augmented reality / virtual
reality meetups and hackathons I knew. I think most of them had never been
to a hackerspace before. three new people showed up, and none of them had
ever been to SudoRoom before.
We got an exhibiting artist to visit! I'd like to get more painters,
artists etc. to be visiting SudoRoom. Talked about paintings, and making 3D
models, and using the light projectors to project art. Introduced them to
the media lab with CeCe (sic) and the sewing machines.
Dane put up a light projector (I'm face palming becusa I keep talking about
this but never bring the ones I have, one of them is a loaner from SudoRoom
that I need to leave at SudoRoom), and he projected the hackers movie onto
the wall.
A cool new person came and we did multiplayer augmented reality with our
headsets. Augmented reality is at a nascent stage right now, but I love
creating art on it the most. We mirrored what we were seeing for others.
We talked about doing an ongoing blender class and I learned how to do
Booleans to cut shapes out of others shapes. I think since I'm time
constrained I might as well run a small pod of people Tuesday evenings.
Went over kitbashing.
Had some great green goddess pizza with Paige and folks. Thanks Paige for
supporting the pizza!
Explored the neighborhood (Temescal) with the folks who had never been to
SudoRoom before. AN ongoing theme is that we never seem to grab the awesome
foot traffic of the neighborhood. There were so many people walking to
restaraunts last night even though the area has relatively little parking.
More than you might see in a lot of downtown oakland
There were regular community gatherings at the board game store across the
street (is it called it's your move)
there's a kitchen appliance store that was having a cooking workshop (they
could be at omni commons!)
Only took a quick look at the new telepresence robot. I spoke to Jake, i
will have to email the company that made the robot, hopefully we can
connect to them and get a free software update since we are a non profit
While I was there I got an AI APi to work, might make something fun for a
hackathon or sudoroom demos. I'm very interested in using AI to help people
create art manually instead of replacing artists.
It was nice to see the dance event going on tuesday nights. wonder if I
should reach out to them and interact with them more!
we talked about fundraising for sudoroom, omnicommons and the MADE game
museum in old oakland. A lot of the stuff at Sudoroom is suitable for a
museum - it'd be nicve to have augmented reality exhibits of what stuff is

computer history knowledge what things are.
There are going to be great things ahead this month!

Hi, Freeway (Wood Street Commons member) is requesting the following.
"Joel needs the following tools to fix our brakes: 14 mm socket,a jack,
21mm socket, a wire brush, a large flathead screwdriver... if anyone can
loan him these tools for the day, we can return them as soon as he's
done... thanks in advance!"
does anyone have a jack to lend them? I believe the rest of the items we
could lend from Omni's supplies
Thanks,
Paige
it's cozee and romantic here Monday next to the counterculture labs folks.
But how do I turn on the lights? I always forget!

It's been so long!
I'm going to show up a little early
- Got 1 person from the (dead) Virtual Reality /AR group at Noisebridge to
come (tentative) He's new in town and actually working on his own AR /
neurology headset
- Getting 2 people who are collaborating on AI to come, one of them
actually has a Quest Headset
- I have my own Augemnted reality projects related to light projection as
well. Think I might make an effort to bring one of the light projectors to
NB!
What have you been working on this week?

Here's my only project I'm interested in at SudoRoom!
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/User:Romyilano#Bestest_Most_Current_Things
Sorry, no time to listen to people make presentations on stuff going on
outside of sudoroom!
No things where I have to click on a link to see some kind of project. no
presentations! no powerpoints! No involvement in anything that is not light
projection! No multimedia room even, just don't got time for it.
My only involvement is going to be working on a hardware hack project and
learning. I'm bringing the VR and AR folks over, and maybe some AI Folks!

Hey,
I haven't been able to come by SudoRoom in a while! Next tUesday hardware
hack night I invited folks from the VR and AR community as well as some
cool AI folks to come by. I've been going to a lot of hackathons, and I
want to promote the "stay gold" vibe by inviting folks to a space.

I guess if you know anyone who has a VR headset especially, that would be
really cool! We can also check out the robot and update the wiki. I'm
debating bringin my light projector (actually the sudoroom light proejctor)
I'll check with jake but looking into installing something permanently in
the balcony.

Hey everyone,
Earlier today I've met with several Omni volunteers and touched on this
topic.
After meeting with volunteers I initiated a conversation with Trevor. Our
chat was mutual and it helped us understand the situation more.
*I have requested to Trevor that he temporarily stay away from Omni and
take that time to process and reflect on his reaction for assaulting Ian.*
*Trevor was receptive to leave and stay away from Omni for a one week
period begining today.*
*(April 6 - April 13)*
For clarity - this is a modified safer space ban and I did not include any
mediations nor did I felt the need to escort him out of Omni.
This ban was initiated as an individual Omni volunteer and not on behalf of
East Bay Food Not Bombs.
Thanks,
Toan

Hi everyone.
The Omni Commons, the building that sudo mesh co-owns with sudo room, Counter
Culture Labs, Food not Bombs and several other collectives just had a private
lender back out of a loan last minute and now it cannot pay its $120k property
taxes due tomorrow.
If anyone is willing to lend us $120k, even if it's for just three months
until we to sort out another loan, please contact me. This needs to happen
before tomorrow at 4 pm pacific time.
The loan would be secured by the building as a second mortgage so it should be
fairly low risk.
