That was not my experience, but I've only been to one of their handful

I am refreshingly surprised that you care about this, Eddan. I think
all Sudoers need to look critically at our work from an intersectional
feminist, anti-racist and anti-colonial frame. That especially
includes being accountable to our privileges and learning to replace
oppressive silencing behavior with ally behavior. How's that Sudo
men's group going, btw?

To be clear, it is women, people of color, queers and other oppressed
groups who have struggled to be supported and represented at Sudoroom.
I feel like saying the organization has struggled is a rhetorical
erasure that adds to this problem. There are actually a lot of us, but
we face a structural bias.
> Additionally, I think there may be some misunderstanding about what having an open knowledge, commons-oriented set of agreements. The logic of open knowledge systems is to celebrate the spread of these norms as they become more widely adopted - concern about 'copying and pasting' seem to perpetuate an exclusive rights kind of thinking.
Pretty sure Hol was being tongue-in-cheek. As I said in reply at the
meeting, "it's more of a ctrl-x"
Refuge Restrooms - a group developing free & open source apps to help
trans & genderqueer people find safe bathrooms - would like to hold a
hackathon at Sudoroom next Saturday (April 12). I think this is an
AWESOME idea! But I want to know how much of the common area will be
available. They want 10AM to 5PM, and our calendar also has:
2-3:45 Today We Learned (this happens in Sudoroom)
3:30 - 5:30 Counter Culture Labs: Lab Automation & Robotics
So either CCL's event could happen inside Sudoroom, or they could
share the common area with the hackathon - maybe the hackathon could
cede the projector area and move to the couches at 3:30. Would this be
disruptive? Thoughts?

Greetings and salutations. I know I don't post much here but I wanted
to pass along something for consideration by Sudoroom.
On 14 June 2014 the IEET is going to be holding a conference called
Global Existential Risks & Radical Futures
(http://brighterbrains.org/articles/entry/global-existential-risks-radical-f…).
As the name implies, the overall theme of the day is disruptive and
radical technologies (such as the grassroots stuff being done at
Sudoroom). I'm posting to see how much interest there would be in in
Sudoroom (as a boots-on-the-ground, actually-doing-stuff group of
people) having a display and demo table at the conference to
demonstrate things that are happening on the street and not inside a
lab or on a bunch of whiteboards.
Would Sudoroom be interested? If so, I can provide more information.
If not, that's fine, hack on.

Hello at this week's meeting we made a new fundraising strategy, that is
participatory.
==Background==
Last year we won two *$4,000 cash* grants, and a *$2,000 3D printer* just
by being sudo room and filling out forms.
==New fundraising Idea==
1. Any sudoer can fill out, or add to this list of 41 grants to apply for.
2. The grant writers for an application will receive a recommendation at a
sudomeeting to get * 50% commission* for applying on sudo's behalf.
3. We organize on fundraising(a)lists.sudoroom.org , so sign up there to
discuss
==Medium-Term Strategy===
1. We think that if the Omni-move-in happens, we would like to fundraise
with them together as a unit. We will wait until July 1st.
2. If the Omni falls through, then we will have a sudo space individual
fundraiser. Idea is a harmonious-hackathon / pay-what-you-can dev bootcamp
one weekend. It can be paired with this idea:
2.1 Offer to host an RSVP Dinner w/ Francisco and Liberation Food Worker
Cooperative
Hi,
My broken ankle is healing. When the time comes I will soon shed my walking
boot, and in return for all that SudoRoom has given to me I would like to
organize the first:
*Russian bathhouse SudoRoom Bonding Experience*
Praveen has discovered a suitable Russian bathhouse in San Francisco.
Is anyone interested? I think a safe environment in which we can all be
*naked* and talk about important things like powerpoint slides, arduinos,
cooperatives, DAC, and feminist porn amid half-naked 50 year old russian
men pouring steaming water on themselves grunting is
*TOTALLY AWESOME.*

Hi Sudoers,
The City of San Leandro is having it's 105th Cherry Festival on May 31.
As part of that, we're organizing a MakeSL maker space that will have
all kinds of activities (an art wall, the maker dads, the Bay Area
Advanced Manufacturing Consortium of 3D printer, 3D scanner, laser
cutting and other companies, a mobile fab lab, and more).
As one of the organizers, I humbly invite you to spill south into our
Festival and show people how to create.
Anyone showing stuff at the BIG Maker Faire in San Mateo? If so, bonus
double duty just a few days later! Got (family-friendly) ideas for
Burning Man that you're dying to try out ahead? hey, give us a shout.
We're looking for fun. Would you like to join us?
Thanks for your time and consideration.

As a quick and easy fix, I just deleted the annoying
mostly-ineffective nagware (which moves a bunch of stuff back above
the fold) and added a more clear calendar link.
Open to more suggestions or help. We'd love to have folks with a
combination of front-end experience and good taste to help style our
wiki. I have a little ancient bit of the former and none of the
latter.

Happy to bump wiki credentials and give server access to any Sudoer
who demonstrates mild trustworthiness and asks. Just send me your
username or a public key :)
FYI. And to clarify, yes William Shelton is a member of sudo room.

Hi Matt-The tenants of 2141 do NOT have the right to be in the common area
without affiliation with the Sudo Room or the Public School. I was told
that William Shelton does, and hopefully he's not bringing them in as his
guests. You, David and any of your associates with The Sudo Room and The
Public School have the right, per us AND yourselves, to tell anybody not
affiliated with either of the groups to kindly stay out of the 2141 large
space.
Hey y'all,
minor point, but I'm hearing back from ppl that they can't find the Sudo

I am happy to do it too but I don't want to step on any toes.

Hi Sudoers!
Just wondering who bottomlines Today We Learned -
- On 4/19, Nadia from the EFF wants to have a mass (legal) defense training
for the NLG, at 3pm in the Common Space..:
https://sudoroom.org/ai1ec_event/national-lawyers-guild-mass-defense-101-tr…
"Training for attorneys and legal workers to learn about how to provide
legal support for protestors. Focus on taking criminal defense cases and
working with legal support. CLE will be available. Free, although donations
to NLG gladly accepted!!"
I see this overlaps with the 'Today We Learned' which nominally runs from
2-3:45 that day in the common space.
In case Nadia can't move the talks back to 4pm - would it be at all
possible for NLG/EFF to take over the common space at 3pm that day, and
'Today We Learned' to perhaps move into Sudo Room, or the BAPS room?
Or, would that be totally lame?
Best,
David
ps. I un-backwards'd the duration of Today We Learned on the calendar from
3:45-2pm, to 2pm-3:45pm.

People I worked and played with in China are having a competition for people to hack e-waste into something cool. Winners will receive prizes as well as the opportunity to showcase their creations on Slate.

Future Tense Initiative & Tsinghua University Launch New U.S.-China Green Electronics Competition
Competition to Encourage Innovation on E-Waste Prevention
Published: March 26, 2014
WASHINGTON, DC — The Future Tense initiative – a partnership of New America, Arizona State University, and Slate magazine – is pleased to announce the launch of Green Electronics: A U.S.-China Maker Challenge, an unprecedented online DIY competition focused on preventing the creation of electronic waste (e-waste). The competition, a collaboration between Future Tense, China's Tsinghua University and other partners, invites U.S. and Chinese makers to find creative ways to turn yesterday's cellphone battery into tomorrow's treasure.
"This is a great opportunity for the United States and China to work toward common goals," said Emily Parker, senior fellow and digital diplomacy advisor at New America, who helped spearhead this project. "Both the U.S. and China want to encourage the innovation happening at the DIY or maker level, and both countries face the challenge of reducing e-waste."
Electronic products tend to become unusable after just a few years, and items such as computers, DVD players and cell phones frequently wind up in landfills. Some of the most creative solutions to this problem may come from U.S. and Chinese makers, many of whom already incorporate old electronic components into their DIY creations. Green electronics will encourage makers to showcase their creations online.
Participants will be invited to upcycle or hack an electronic product to create a new electronic product; repair an electronic product; create a sustainable electronic product; or create artwork from used electronic products. They will show their inventions on Instructables.com, where submissions will be accepted from April 7 - May 31, 2014. Following a round of public voting, a panel of judges will choose the best selections from each country. Winners will receive prizes as well as the opportunity to showcase their creations on Slate.
Judges include Chris Anderson, former Wired editor; Joi Ito, Director of the MIT Media Lab; Mitzi Montoya, Vice President and University Dean for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Arizona State University; and Sun Hong Bin, Dean of Educational Affairs at Tsinghua University. Partners include Instructables, TechShop, Hackerspaces.org, XinCheJian, Autodesk, and Inventables.

The board of directors has reverted the changes to /bureaucracy until
further discussion with the greater Noisebridge can be had. Policies to add
required discussion periods are also in motion within the board to make
sure that incidents like this do not occur again. Given the gravity of this
decision, this is a one-time exception, not a precedent.
I believe Naomi put it best in a previous post to the list:
"This "active board" thing is in its infancy. We only just decided at the
ONE meeting we have had so far, what the rules of engagement and proper
process were.
Were we supposed to have gotten it right on the first try? No.
Could I have imagined that the insanity that transpired this first week
would ever take place? Hell no."
The decision to have the board take an active role I think is a pivotal one
in improving some the issues that Noisebridge has been facing increasingly
over the years. But neither I, nor the rest of the board, have any
intention of disempowering the membership, turning Noisebridge into a
dictatorship, or any of the language I have heard used over the last few
days. We want to be in service to the membership, not to rule over it.
My offer to have a productive dialogue with anyone who has feedback on this
process still stands.
Cheers,
Madelynn

Tonight's another Words of Resistence radical poetry reading!
It's "A night of words to explore and destroy our relationship with
technology!" I know I totally disagree with that, and that a lot of the
people who organize and go to this event have a collectively more nuanced
perspective than this (in part because of rumors I've been spreading to

more nuanced conversation and intersection of radical communities, so I'm

You're probably aware that most "life-hacking" involves ways of saving
money. What compensation can our "life hackers" expect from this major
cable network (as you put it)?
You may be familiar with our community's values about open data,

I added this to our meeting agenda on a whim. Most of the discussion
was me being bitter about their co-option of language. Hol had the
quote of the night: "they're ctrl-v-ing the hell out of us", referring
to the Kopimist cut-and-paste mantra.
I'd always been skeptical of them. Their fundraiser got 100k in one
night, and they charge $400/month for their co-working space. They
have paid positions, and their leadership appears hierarchical and
opaque. For example, there is no mailing list, only a glitzy
"newsletter". While I was inspired by their hosting Oakland Data Day,
I felt most of the value came from volunteer attendees. In other
words, where is that money going?
This ridiculous video didn't help me take the "impact hub" concept
seriously: http://vimeo.com/35373512
Put simply, Sudoroom is a grassroots organization and always will be.
Our ultimate goal is to serve our communities. I believe the HUB's
ultimate goal is to extract rent from our communities.
After reading on Oakland Wiki yesterday that their building is owned
by Signature, the same developers behind Brooklyn Basin, I believe all
hypothetical good faith I had in that project has vanished. It's
marketing, marketing, marketing. You could argue the HUB is not their
landlord, but then why are they naming their new building complex "The
Hive"? It turns out this "hive" also includes the 5 story condo
building a block from Sudo that has literally had a "now selling" sign
since we moved in two years ago. This is absolutely a collaboration
between speculators and gentrifiers in my mind, and I think it is
extremely gross and fucked up.
To be honest, I think we'd be very wise as an organization to
explicitly distance ourselves from these kinds of projects.

I have no problem being Banned out of the Sudo Room.
This is Because I have undergone a sever economic depression that has left of my liberalist plans in queue.
Since I am unable to launch a political platform to present my liberation, as a leader of a movement beyond precedent, I rather wait until I can get my career back in track, save enough resources, open a few businesses, and do such.
I am willing to do whatever it takes to make my dreams come true.
I believe this ban is about me hanging on the skinny rope of my impoverished persona FOR TOO LONG.
I have never really done anything for the Sudo Room. Except for scrap some e-waste. But I always eat, drink, converse, make friends, make art, bring friends, use & work on computers. And I am very thankful to had such experiences in my life.
This is not a good bye, just a "see ya later". I am really motivated to turn my act around, make some money, and put it where my dreams are living, dying perhaps, existing in vacuum, underground, isolated.
At this point I don't care to defend my self against Eliot anymore. Making Marc Juul, and Yardena feel threatened is definitively past my original intentions. Like I said, the environment is turning me into a person I don't want to be. I opened a can of worms with Eliot, and I end up receiving all of its composite matter first hand. I do not ever want to experience that ever again in my life. My friend told me not to. And I did. It's my fault, but everything happens for a reason.
When random Reasons are seen as holly water in the pouring rain,
One can save the water for the dry weather, and be thankful,
For something good came out a random fault.
Who makes the clouds go round?
BE SAFE.
I hope to see some awesome proposals from people who participate in
these events! :)
thanks
Hilary

Starting April 5, Ace Monster Toys Hackerspace in Oakland is pleased to
host a month of design courses and workshops with Régis Lemberthe of
A&Ré Design.
Originally trained as an industrial designer, Régis graduated with his
Master's Degree in Humanitarian Design And Sustainable Living before
moving to Berlin and getting involved in the local maker community. He
now presents several different workshops there, in parallel with his
activities as part of A&Ré Design Studio.
From his description of the Design Tour (http://2014.design-tour.org):
"One of the most appropriate and exciting answers to mass production and
consumption, the maker movement has in the last years gained
considerable recognition. Fab labs and hacker spaces are being created
in every major city, offering those familiar with low-scale productions
techniques access to adequate machinery, as well as training for
everyone else. Skill sharing in fab labs is based on the know-how and
experience of artists, designers, makers, programmers and hackers
committed to making production accessible to all. Yet, while some
techniques are widely spread, others sadly remain more confidential.
After a few years spent facilitating events at Betahaus Berlin, French
designer Régis Lemberthe goes on tour - a series of craft workshops and
social+collaborative design courses hosted in maker spaces of various
different cities - lasting for a month, wherever interest and facilities
are. It has started in 2013 in Betahaus Berlin and will continue in
early 2014 in the US, Canada and London before proceeding towards
south-east Asia. "

Not a lot seems to be happening in the Bay Area for it, but I thought
folks might find this interesting: Saturday is the 10th anniversary
celebration for Arduino (wow, it's been that long?),

Also, a $3, $6, $9 flash sale on boards (allowing backorders) if anyone
is looking to stock up! https://www.sparkfun.com/arduinoday

Hi everyone!
This is a reminder that we will be having our bimonthly (as in twice a
month) meeting tonight at Sudo Room at 7pm. We will be graced by the
presense of two amazing local orgs:
- *Anti-Eviction Mapping Project: *This activist mapping group has been
doing work to visualize and collect stories around gentrification and
displacement in San Francisco. They are looking to expand their work into
the east bay, and are coming to talk with us about how LocalWiki can be
used as a shared storytelling platform around experiences of eviction and
displacement and a resource center for tenants.
- *The Bay Area Video Coalition*: This media workers advocacy nonprofit is
looking at LocalWiki as a place to house some of their archival media.
See you tonight!
Vicky

If our tenancies survive for another rave like this I think we should
try harder to coordinate the cleanup scheduling and press for it to
happen earlier in the week on one of our less busy nights, and ideally
earlier in the day as well.
Hi all,
this weekend, several dozen folks – and you? – are assembling to "hack
money out of politics.
I'm helping organize and raise funds for the event
http://www.eventbrite.com/e/hack-for-democracy-registration-10711042015
(discussion
flowing here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7438022). Rootstrikers,
Move to Amend, The Sunlight Foundation, Maplight, and other organizations
inspired and are partly involved with this newly-formed, nonpartisan
initiative. Personally, I'm eager to see us go deeper than the majority of
civic hacking with real and consequential political action.
Your inspiration and participation can shape the initiatives and the future
of this work!
Sign up or join the waiting list. Spots are opening up Thursday night!
Ping me with questions or proposals – especially for pitches or prize ideas.
warmly,
Danny
Hi Sudoers,
The Omni Collective, a collective of collectives that includes Sudo Room
and the Bay Area Public School, will be holding a delegates meeting tonight
at 7pm at our main space at 2141 Broadway (enter on 22nd, door code *2580#
or buzz in to 2nd flr) in one of the side rooms. All are welcome to attend,
and we will hold an informational introduction to the effort to all
newcomers and answer any questions about the project.
Best,
me.
Most definitely not offended by your intersectionality. Indeed, I celebrate it.

That said, I think that talking about there being more POC and women in the Hub than in Sudo Room isn't a fair assessment because said assessment doesn't touch on Yar's concerns of specifically *class*/*economic* exclusion. If we are going to talk about diversity and inclusion we need to talk intersectionally. (Not to offend you, Eddan. I think it's important to bring up this point since it hasn't been brought up yet.)

We will _also_ be having a sudo room reboot meeting on Wednesday at 7
pm, which will be focused on rebooting sudo room in a new and bigger
space!
