Thanks to this hack, we should be able to use a noisebridge-donated lot of ~200 sparky routers for https://peoplesopen.net/

Subject: [Mesh] So, about those Meraki Sparky boards
Date: Wed, Mar 26, 2014 18:34
A little drinking at Noisebridge and some poking from JC got me
thinking about the Sparky boards. So I came up to Sudo and worked with
Marc to figure it out.
The TL;DR version: It's an AR2317 and you have a watchdog timer, but
it doesn't actually reset the unit. It just posts an interrupt. It
turns out GPIO6 is the "pat to stop it resetting" line.
So, the details:
I first did "help" at the redboot prompt. I found "bdshow", which is
the "Atheros board info."
RedBoot> bdshow
name: Meraki Outdoor 1.0

serialNo: Q2AJYS5XMYZ8
Watchdog Gpio pin: 6
secret number: e2f019a200ee517e30ded15cdbd27ba72f9e30c8
.. hm. Watchdog GPIO pin 6? What's that?
After manually checking out the watchdog registers via 'x', we
discovered that it would count down to 0 and not reset.
So, hm. Maybe the GPIO 6 wire is actually the right thing to pat. And
yes, the board doesn't reset when you pat GPIO 6.
Board: ap61

RedBoot> mfill -b 0xb1000090 -l 4 -p 0x00000002
.. then I manually did this every minute or so.
RedBoot>
RedBoot> mfill -b 0xb1000090 -l 4 -p 0x00000042
RedBoot> mfill -b 0xb1000090 -l 4 -p 0x00000002

RedBoot> mfill -b 0xb1000090 -l 4 -p 0x00000002
.. so, the solution here seems to be to "set gpio6 to be output", then
"pat it every 60 seconds."

I sympathize with Eddan's concerns that it is in the logic of open
knowledge systems to celebrate the [CTRL]+[c]/[CTRL]+[v] of said systems.
That said, I think that talking about there being more POC and women in the
Hub than in Sudo Room isn't a fair assessment because said assessment
doesn't touch on Yar's concerns of specifically *class*/*economic*
exclusion. If we are going to talk about diversity and inclusion we need to
talk intersectionally. (Not to offend you, Eddan. I think it's important to
bring up this point since it hasn't been brought up yet.)

The long-term blocker for this was insurance, which Matt finally
bought for us a month or two ago. Last I heard, he'd notified Laurie
of the insurance and we're still waiting on a response from her.
It might help to poke our landlords about it again.

Hi Matt & Eddan-
Attached is the March Statement. How was your event last night?

The common area and some other rooms are to be carpet-cleaned tomorrow
starting at 3:30. I'm not sure where they'll start or how long it will
take, but George has asked for our help in moving furniture about. He will
also be cleaning one of the empty rooms and the roof starting 630.
I know Thursdays are a big day for us and this is not much notice, but i am
glad carpets are getting cleaned. Feel like we should scotchguard the whole
place..
"just so you know the carpet cleaners come at 3 30 thurs to do the upstairs
at Sean's expense and Sean's group 3 helpers are coming thursday to vacuum
the yellow room and help me clean the roof at about 6 30.
{...}
they may be asked to move around, Damien from spotless is very professional
and the machines are not too loud. If anybody could help with moving
furniture in a way that it ends up located in a suitable location for your
meetings and classes and the dirty parts of the carpet are cleaned"
"Trust is the key to any relationship. It must be earned first through respect then through shared experience. Lacking either of these leads to half hearted interest."

I plan to attend, I especially want to discuss with free culture folks a
notion I have been pondering for some time now.
It is one thing to employ a license that sets clear and legally-robust
terms for the re-purposing of creative content covered under copyright. It
is another to pursue, in any given endeavor, the proliferation of
knowledge, in all its formats and expressions, and not to make that
knowledge scarce, especially as a source of benefits (e.g. income).
I am getting the feeling that there is something essential in this thought,
that articulates a notion (a side) of the moral basis of free (as in
freedom) and openness that is very practical, and critical.
I'd like to discuss this with more folks, perhaps at this event on Thursday.
Hack on.

Hey there, do you guys want to try keeping some of these super simple
waste materials rapidly replicating food self-sufficiency starters in
your space derr? They would all fit in the little party greenhouse
which may or may not still be currently occupying the windowsill, and
you could give all the anon strikers dey nutrients. Profile is, like
this:
They will fit in the area that the current party box occupies, and be
less than an iota of money. LOL I give near complete nutrition to
hackers, freedom lovers, nearly any alt-civ land project and
astronauts. :D
The oyster mushrooms eat (preferably sterilized) cardoard, paper,
coffee grounds, and straw, as well as even other things like denim
fabric and toilet paper rolls (<3), the spirulina algaes eat baking
soda saltwater that's more alkaline than any other bacteria and air,
so it's not like there's really any competition there they'll survive
even in less sterile conditions. They ship in jars but like bigger
spaces or, more jars.
If this was a sudo room dating email, these would be your new pets.
..they do but play a role in the plan ^.^

THE SITUATION:
The amazing Piedmont home I am in is being sold in a messy divorce. The
owner is wonderful, however her divorce is now calling for her to sell her
million dollar home so her husband can be paid his half of the equity. When
I first moved in it seemed the divorce was dragging but I never thought he
would force her and his 9 year old daughter out of this wonderful Piedmont
neighborhood! I have never met him (they were divorcing before I arrived)
but I will say I am not fond of this. So because of this and this reason
ONLY I am now thrust on SF Bay Area housing market.
I just found this out YESTERDAY
and I have to MOVE BY APRIL 1 (WTW!) A week!
ANYWAY
Wanted to tap the Sudo Network to see if anyone knew of a room/space/etc or
knew someone who knew someone who know who I need to know!
Reply and I can send you info about me
A little insight
I AM the ideal Human Flatmate! I love making smoothies, I heart cupcakes,
love cooking vegan/vegetarian meals, love animals, non smoker, non drinker,
responsible, and I have tons of cool FREE perks to events! (The events are
only exciting if you are into tech/nerd/game stuff otherwise just control x

Hey y'all:
So this is a totally last min no expectations message. This is Sean
O'Brien. I have spoken with some folks from Sudo Room in the past when I
was part of The Holdout. Im also in a band called No Business. We had a
show with 2 touring bands planned for tomorrow (tues) night. 2 venues fell
through last min. We were going to say fuck it and play a generator show
but now its going to rain! ha! Anyways, just curious if a) y'all have
nothing going tomorrow night and b) if you would be into hosting an old
school punk show. If so, let me know and if not really no worries. Thanks!

Yar, the people who came to Sudo last night at the Anti-Eviction Mapping
Project data vis team. <https://antievictionmap.squarespace.com/> I'm in
direct contact with them and will forward the OW article along. They are
potentially interested in using LocalWiki (Oakland Wiki is a part of the LW
network) as a tool for collective storytelling and resource-sharing. We'll
be presenting to them next week. I can keep the list posted. ;]
Could we get the sudoroom front pages looking as clean as the omni front page? It's nice.. It presents a way cleaner message of what sr is etc

At this point there have been several informal calls for Xavier to be
banned. After last night's events I reluctantly agree that he should
not be welcome at Sudo until he's accountable for his behavior:
* he made threats of violence towards somebody at Sudo
* he did something similar at Rock Paper Scissors
* he zealously defended other acts of violence committed by a friend of his
I'm willing to act as a mediator, but I'm not confident that the
problem can be resolved.
So I formally propose that he be banned from our space for an
indefinite period. Are there any objections?
hey y'all,
recieved word from ian that the 22nd st keypad is 'disconnected' & no
access to upstairs this am..
we will try to open/remediate the situ in the next hr but -- fyi..
Dear Sudoroom, it's 10:40pm on a Friday.
Most of you are partying your ass off, and I love you for it.
Is anybody in possession of most of their brain? I have a little thing, and
I need a little feedback.
Got 15 minutes? I would so love to hear from you. Please reply if you are
not at the club.

Just passing this on, some people might be interested:
Starting April 5, Ace Monster Toys Hackerspace in Oakland is pleased to
host a month of design courses and workshops with Régis Lemberthe of
A&Ré Design.
Originally trained as an industrial designer, Régis graduated with his
Master's Degree in Humanitarian Design And Sustainable Living before
moving to Berlin and getting involved in the local maker community. He
now presents several different workshops there, in parallel with his
activities as part of A&Ré Design Studio.
From his description of the Design Tour (http://2014.design-tour.org):
"One of the most appropriate and exciting answers to mass production and
consumption, the maker movement has in the last years gained
considerable recognition. Fab labs and hacker spaces are being created
in every major city, offering those familiar with low-scale productions
techniques access to adequate machinery, as well as training for
everyone else. Skill sharing in fab labs is based on the know-how and
experience of artists, designers, makers, programmers and hackers
committed to making production accessible to all. Yet, while some
techniques are widely spread, others sadly remain more confidential.
After a few years spent facilitating events at Betahaus Berlin, French
designer Régis Lemberthe goes on tour - a series of craft workshops and
social+collaborative design courses hosted in maker spaces of various
different cities - lasting for a month, wherever interest and facilities
are. It has started in 2013 in Betahaus Berlin and will continue in
early 2014 in the US, Canada and London before proceeding towards
south-east Asia. "

Hi Labitators!
We're starting a coalition for an international coalition of
free/libre community and mesh networks. One of the first goals is to
define a license for free networks similar to a free software license,
so that all of the current free networks can connect to each other.
We're trying to get funding from the Night Foundation and your tweets,
facebook likes, etc. will help a lot! Here's the main link with more
info:
https://www.newschallenge.org/challenge/2014/submissions/toward-a-network-c…
Also, thanks to everyone from Labitat who helped fund our local
Oakland mesh project! Here's a small status update:
We've developed a new OpenWRT compatible firmware based on German and
Slovenian projects + our own code. We are currently testing ~25 nodes
deployed around the bay area to find and eliminate the worst bugs
before a wider release of ~100 nodes. We've been developing an
automated mesh node deployment system that allows us to take supported
routers out of the box and flash and configure them for use in our
network with minimal human intervention. It is almost complete, and it
uses the sticker printer program developed by Asbjorn from Labitat to
automatically print a sticker with your basic info (e.g. your default
password) that we stick on the the routers before shipping to new node
operators.
One of the awesome things about our firmware is that it allows you to
choose how much of your own internet connection you want to share with
the mesh, and all mesh traffic is routed through a VPN owned by the
local mesh organization which handles all abuse complaints or legal
inquiries. This functionality makes the mesh nodes immediately useful,
even before we reach a node density where new nodes are likely to be
within reach of existing nodes. This concept was first implemented by
wlan slovenja so all credit to them!
Our local non-profit mesh organization is called sudo mesh (
https://sudomesh.org ) and the network is called People's Open Network
( https://peoplesopen.net ). sudo mesh is providing a firmware and
support for getting on peoplesopen.net and will start selling
pre-flashed routers for peoplesopen.net later this year. sudo mesh is
focused on Oakland. We are making sudo mesh an easily forkable
organization, with all material (legal documents, code, marketing
material, documentation) available under open licenses, and we are
encouraging others to create groups like sudo mesh that support
peoplesopen.net in other geographic areas.
If someone wants to start a mesh organization in e.g. Copenhagen, as a
fork of sudo mesh, then reach out to info(a)sudomesh.org and we will do
our best to facilitate!

marc/juul
Sorry for late notice, but my morning's cleared up and I can commit to
being at the bookfair! I'm going to be at Sudoroom around 8am to pack
up the printer and needed accessories and shoot for loading everything
into my car by 8:45. It would be nice to have help during loading and
unloading. I can pick people up in my car before or after this. I
can't stay until the end though - ideally I'd like to pack up the
printer mid-afternoon and then bring it to the Omni and set it up for
that event, but we'll see how easy it is to transport out during peak
hours.
Lemme know if you'd like to help!
Can someone clarify our current status?
I am interested in applying for a grant however these are the requirements
"I certify that the organization for which I am submitting this application
is eligible to apply for the Challenge. This means my organization is a
registered and recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a registered office in
the Bay Area. If you are a fiscal sponsor submitting an application for a
sponsored group, the sponsored group must also be located in the Bay Area. "
So do we qualify? Are we a 501(c)(3)
Thanks!

Hey sudoers!
A coalition of free/libre community-owned networks around the world
has submitted an application for a Knight News Challenge grant aimed
at strengthening the Internet for free expression and innovation.
https://www.newschallenge.org/challenge/2014/submissions/toward-a-network-c…
Please check it out, give us feedback in the form of Comments, and
some "Applause" if you dig the idea!
The goal of funding is trifold:
* To support the development of the Network Commons License[1] and an
organization to uphold it,
* To support an international Free Networks summit to gather together
representatives of free networks[2] in one place to share ideas and
resources toward creating the aforementioned organization,
* To support the creation of educational materials, workshops, and
guides for the construction and maintenance of free networks.
[1] There is currently an effort underway to develop a Network Commons
License - similar to a Creative Commons License - to enable legal
support for free networks. Two weeks ago, a group of folks
representing Sudo Mesh, wlan-slovenija, LA Meshnet, Kansas City
Freedom Network and Austin Freenet converged in Austin for the Free
Network Foundation's winter summit. It was an awesome, intensive
couple of days with remote participation from several other groups.
You can read notes from the summit here:

* Draft of the Network Commons License:

[2] The following groups helped draft the Knight News Challenge
proposal, and we intend to reach out to many more in the coming weeks:
* Sudo Mesh, launching the People's Open Network in Oakland, CA
* Kansas City Freedom Network, in close alliance with the Free Network

Hi everyone,
Oakland Wiki <http://oaklandwiki.org> has partnered with Oakland Public
Library <http://oaklandlibrary.org/> to host a series of edit parties at
different branches of the library this spring!
See the event dates and locations at
http://oaklandwiki.org/Oakland_Wiki_Events
There's also a rad flyer that the wonderful librarians have made with all
the necessary info attached here.
FINALLY, if you're in Oakland tomorrow for first friday, drop by Sudo
Room<http://sudoroom.org>where we'll be Drawing
Oakland <http://oaklandwiki.org/Draw_Oakland>. We'll have art supplies and
will be drawing whatever we want about Oakland - its neighborhoods, people,
etc. We'll be scanning our drawings and uploading them to the wiki to
illustrate entries. If you want to draw a logo or illustration of your
neighborhood or a favorite park or taco truck, this is your chance :)
Best,
Marina

Wasn't there a group meeting at Sudo yesterday to organize against
this? How did that go?
Hey all,
Please keep your eyes out. 4 bikes stolen from my dear friends' house late
last night.
Gamify the cause by spotting a bikes and nabbing it.

At tonight's meeting there was unanimous consensus, well beyond
quorum, on applying for 501c3. If no objections are made on the
mailing list, that is going to happen.

Hey all,
In an effort to throw together a promo for the collective-of-collectives,
Joel from Timeless Infinite Light was hoping to film Sudo and BAPS at work
in the space tomorrow.
Matt S. has sent him the opt-in policy on filming at Sudo room, so he's up
on that.
He's hoping to film / photograph a bit basically everywhere - in the common
room, in sudo, in baps, and the back (east) room along broadway that George
is opening for the BAPS class that will be held in there.
FYI Joel doesn't want to 'interview' anyone or have anything overtly
expository, more like just show brief clips of people in action / quitely
doing their thing. Close ups of computer screens? putting radios together?
who knows but, I wanted to give everyone a head's up - let me know if you
have any questions et al - I will also be there.

Subject: [omnicollective] Federici AT THE OMNI 3/22 this Sat. aft/eve! &
open house!
To: omnicollective(a)lists.riseup.net
Hi everyone!
If you haven't yet heard, Bay Area Public School and the Omni Oakland
Collective are hosting our first-ever event at the Omni this Saturday!
5-7pm - Open House: We will be cold-chillin and showing the space to small
groups, as well as hanging about for a bit afterwards.
7-9pm: Talks by SILVIA FEDERICI, GEORGE CAFFENTZIS AND PETER
LINEBAUGH<https://www.facebook.com/events/1398000470462548/?ref_dashboard_filter=upco…>
If you haven't yet seen the space, please come - and please do pass on and
forward widely..? Especially for those who might consider donating or
investing in our project, this would be an excellent time to check out the
space.
*Saturday, we will also be soft-launching a simple website around the
collective of collectives. *If you are a member collective who would like
to have a presence on the website (and we very much want you to!), and has
not yet been in communication with us about this, do get in touch with me (
dkeenan44(a)gmail.com) or Joel (otispig(a)gmail.com) with some photos, text,
video, articles, pretty much any media we might be able to put up there
that looks good. (We'll send another email out about this, too.)
Awesome. Let's do this!
David
If anybody would like help configuring their email clients to send in
plain text, I'm sure plenty of folks would be willing to help you at
Sudoroom. :)

Yes! Please go to this. The event will serve two purposes:
EXCITING SPEAKERS! In particular, Silvia Federici is a world-famous
anarcha-feminist who literally wrote the book on large chunks of
medieval european womens' history. Her revolutionary consciousness
spans millennia. I'm pretty sure she exists outside of linear time.
SUDOROOM'S FUTURE! We could move into a giant building with a bunch
of other groups and own it. We could really do it. Really! Come see
the building. There will be tours starting at 6pm (talks at 7). Also
meet people from the many other groups and talk to them about how
great it would be to move in together and how we're going to do it.
I really hope to see you all there.
Hey Sudoers,
Come check out this even at The (soon to be) Omni Collective space this
weekend!
Saturday March 22nd 6pm:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1398000470462548/
Join Silvia Federici, Peter Linebaugh, and George Caffentzis for a
discussion on Reproduction, Labor, and Capital at the Omni (4799 Shattuck
Ave) in Oakland on Saturday, March 22nd. Please click the link below for
details.
George is author of In Letters of Blood and Fire: Work, Machines, and the
Crisis of Capitalism.
Silvia is author of Revolution at Point Zero: Housework, Reproduction, and
Feminist Struggle.
Peter is author of Stop, Thief!: The Commons, Enclosures, and Resistance.
George will present his latest work, In Letters of Blood and Fire: Work,
Machines, and Value (PM Press, 2013) a collection of essays that draw upon
a careful reading of Marx's thought to elucidate political concerns
encompassing twenty-first-century capitalism, information technology,
immaterial production, financialization, and globalization. Emphasizing
class struggles that have proliferated across the social body of global
capitalism, Caffentzis shows how a wide range of conflicts and antagonisms
in the labor-capital relation express themselves within and against the
work process. He will also discuss his recent PM release, The Debt
Resisters' Operations Manual.
Sylvia Federici's Revolution at Point Zero (PM Press, 2012) collects forty
years of research and theorizing on the nature of housework, social
reproduction, and women's struggles on this terrain--to escape it, to better
its conditions, to reconstruct it in ways that provide an alternative to
capitalist relations. Indeed, as Federici reveals, behind the capitalist
organization of work and the contradictions inherent in "alienated labor"
is an explosive ground zero for revolutionary practice upon which are
decided the daily realities of our collective reproduction. Beginning with
Federici's organizational work in the Wages for Housework movement, the
essays collected here unravel the power and politics of wide but related
issues including the international restructuring of reproductive work and
its effects on the sexual division of labor, the globalization of care work
and sex work, the crisis of elder care, the development of affective labor,
and the politics of the commons.
Peter's Stop, Thief! is a majestic tour de force that akes aim at the
thieves of land, the polluters of the seas, the ravagers of the forests,
the despoilers of rivers, and the removers of mountaintops. Scarcely a
society has existed on the face of the earth that has not had commoning at
its heart. "Neither the state nor the market," say the planetary commoners.
These essays kindle the embers of memory to ignite our future commons.
The Bay Area Public School is a school with no curriculum. It is not
accredited, it does not give out degrees, and it has no affiliation with
the public school system. It is a framework that supports autodidactic
activities, operating under the assumption that everything is in everything.

FYI: I know a lot of the people running the hacker schools and who have
graduated from them. I think most of these schools are legit, but I'm
wondering if that is because it is due to the location (SF Bay Area) and
the very high talent pool here.
None of these bootcamps claims to replace a university education, they are
offering a very different thing.
I'm spooked by people who would advocate replacing an education with
vocational bootcamps. I don't see these bootcamps competing with computer
science departments at universities.
I can see a lot of potential abuse occurring as well:

I think Sudo Room has a stake in the existence of effective hacker-training
programs, regardless of whether they are offered *by* Sudo Room. So, thanks
Hol for posting the link.
I agree with GtwoG that there is some possibility for abuse; but neither
the article nor the agency's web site offer a concise presentation of what
it means to "be in compliance". Is the agency throwing up regulations that
will deter good work? It's hard to tell!
I posted this to a couple email lists in the Wikipedia space, so check out

correct way possible, with Techno-Activism Third Mondays!
Tomorrow, March 17th, at 6PM we brainstorm off the theme of:
Rightscon Decompression and Review
This month, San Francisco hosted Rightscon, the human rights and
technology conference organized by Access. We saw many familiar faces

next. Whether you attended or not, come along, and hear about what
happened and what might happen next.
Also: the latest insider digital rights news from Burma, Venezuela,

Colorado News: Court Rules That Possession of Marijuana Convictions Can Now Be Overturned
A panel of three Colorado Court of Appeals judges unanimously ruled in favor of allowing some state citizens who have been convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana prior to the implementation of Dec. 2012's Amendment 64 to request their convictions be overturned.
According to Al Jazeera America, Amendment 64 decriminalized marijuana possession up to an ounce. A woman's 2011 conviction for possessing the drug was under appeal when the panel of judges decided to overturn the conviction because of a "significant change in the law."
Brandi Jessica Russell's defense attorney, Brian Emerson, told the judges Thursday that Amendment 64 should be applied retroactively, which the panel agreed with because they said there are some legal exceptions.
"The general presumption of prospective application, however, is subject to a doctrine established by our General Assembly and Supreme Court enabling a defendant to benefit retroactively from a significant change in the law," Judge Mary Hoak said in her 16-page opinion.

Russell was convicted in Grand County for the possession of one gram or less of methamphetamine, marijuana concentrate possession and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.
Brian Vicente, one of Amendment 64's authors, said the judges' ruling could ultimately affect hundreds of Coloradoans who were sentenced to jail terms for petty marijuana possession, while some inmates currently serving time could also be released. He also said that prior to the amendment, the state had prosecuted about 9,000 marijuana possession cases a year.
Emerson said the "tide is turning" on the national stance toward marijuana use, and that this ruling is an indication of that. The attorney also said that many prosecutors haven't given up their fight against marijuana possession and use as he still represents a number of marijuana appeals.
"This ruling shows it would be wise for them to focus on more pressing matter," he said.
However, following the judge's decision Thursday, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers released a statement with his plan to appeal the ruling because it could open up more case appeals that don't even involve marijuana. According to Suthers, nothing in the amendment shows that it can be applied retroactively and should not apply to previous cases.
"Well-established retroactivity law in Colorado indicates that statutory changes are prospective only unless the General Assembly or the voters clearly indicted an intent to require such retroactive application," Suthers' statement reads..
During the ruling, the judges agreed that there is nothing in the amendment stating they can throw out previous convictions, but they argued that sate law gives the defendant an opportunity to receive post-conviction relief "if there has been a significant change in the law."
And the judges claim Amendment 64 did in fact significantly change the law.

Hello,
I completed my hack of porting the Darkplaces gaming engine to the
Raspberry PI. Here are a few videos of the PI in action running
Quake-related games at 1080p.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtQQkRlrLIw&list=PLCnagLKAtPONIbS0AnuE47bHN…
Gameplay is 20-30 frames per second at 1080p with full audio. For a $25
computer this is not bad at all. In some parts of the world the PI is the
very first computer people have seen.
The package will be released sometime next week and source code will be
merged into Darkplaces afterwards.

what do people think of the shotspotter system installed in oakland?
it's a network of microphones on telephone poles, each with a GPS (for
a precise clock) and a network connection. When a gunshot-like sound is
detected, they send the sound and its precise timing to a central server
that determines the location of the shot, and tells the police to go
there.
some people have expressed concern that the microphones are used to spy on
people, but it would be impossible to hear a conversation from the top of
a telephone pole that wasnt already loud enough to be heard inside nearby
houses (or the phone in your pocket).
apparently the city pays $264,000 per year to keep shotspotter going. I
think sudoroom people could do it for much less if they thought it was a
useful thing. They would be discontinuing it to save money, or perhaps to
avoid having to send cops to do actual work once in a while...
i mean.. sending police toward the gunfire? sounds like a good idea...
