Hey Sudoers,
I'd like to submit a proposal in advance of a meeting next *Wednesday,
January 11th at 8 PM:*
*The proposal: *I propose we organize working groups for membership,
facilities, finances, promotion, and general administration.
*The goals:* I think we should focus in 2023 on bringing in new people.
Hosting more events. Finding new sources of revenue like grants. Organizing
the tools, repairing the roof, and installing a mezzanine. I think all of
these would be more attainable if we had a bit of structure that makes it
easier for new people -- and old! -- to find similarly minded collaborators
and organize and communicate to do these things collaboratively.
*The details: *I see three elements to this proposal, which I'm listing to
make it easier to offer suggestions or alterations:
*1)* I think we should define a set of core functions which require
coordination: membership, facilities, finances, promotion, and
administration (miscellaneous general operation).
*2)* I think we should promote coordination by establishing working groups,
primarily consisting of an email list and a wiki page, but with broad
leeway in how each group wants to organize and communicate. The facilities
working group could decide to set up a Discord channel. The building group
could choose to have regular in person meetings. The admin group could
operate mostly on Signal. These don't have to be dictated in this proposal,
as long as everyone knows how to get in touch with these working groups.
*3)* I propose that participation and role assignment be presumed open, but
managed by the groups themselves. I am actively choosing not to propose
that they groups have a leader or a minimum number of participants, or a
qualification to join. As proposed, I imagine anyone who likes fixing 3D
printers when they clog can sign up for the facilities working group and
now they're an equal member to everyone else. But if the membership working
group is just one person answering new member questions, that's fine. The
finance group and promotion group will presumably set guidelines on who has
login credentials for accounts. Under this proposal, anyone can join any
group and no member of a group has elevated privileges unless they
establish them by consensus separate from this proposal.
What do you all think? Would you like to join any of these groups? I'd like
to get lots of feedback and then discuss this next Wednesday to incorporate
the feedback received over email.
Cheers,
Andy

Ya Thomas, I'd be up for vending from the machine with a special code
instead of coins. But I still have a long way to go to get to know it.

I found someone's project on the laser cutter computer and moved it to the
main table. Let's all remember to leave spaces in a usable state when we
finish working. Thanks!
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Sewing
Does anyone know the latest on the sewing room in the multimedia lab or
whom to contact? Our current wiki is about 5 years old, I'd like to update
it so that we can promote it on the front page more

Romy Ilano
romy(a)snowyla.com
I'd like to put something more fresh on the front page as a video. While
there is stuff on instagram, it's a PITA to download it (or is it?)
I think we can even make simple videos off screenshots, but stuff like the
robot arm moving is pretty nice.
If you have anything could you please email me or put it in a common
folder? I'll make effort to do this as well. I'd like to get our activities
off being only on social media...

At this point I'm relying entirely on the wiki for anything tracking what projects go on.
While it's nice to have slack, email or discord, I cannot work with those mediums to get anything done, they just seem more focused around chatting and holding cool meetings instead of developing ideas to me.
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Art#Art_Meetups_at_SudoRoom
^^^ this list is old and crusty. I know some people have been making art with the laser cutting machine and the multi media lab. Are there any other contributions?

Hi,
Looking for a laser cutter technician for a friend. He has a laser
cutter and it isn't working. Can't even pulse the laser or communicate with
the computer to upload the design. Do you have someone I can hire?
Below are pictures of the laser cutter.

Hey everyone. Here is a summary of tonight's meeting, which is also
available at https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Meeting_Notes_2023-01-11
* We had three new member applicants introduce themselves
* We discussed a plan to create five working groups to help organize the
space. There were no blocks or requests for amendment, so now the proposal
sits for one week to see if anyone has any objections. The text of the
proposal can be seen in the link above.
* Glen unveiled a Discord server he set up to see if people like using this
as a way to interact. If you want to join, click this link: https://discord

Cheers!

thanks so much Romy for making this great wiki page!
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Cool_Projects
we have a lot of pages that need updating, and here's an easy example:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Printing
the first part is "2D Printing" also known as paper printers. but it hasn't
been updated in a while! Amusingly, we do have a few 2D printers but the list
is inaccurate. Who wants to fix it?
I know that presently, we have a working laser printer (last seen on the table
in front of the vending machine) and a working inkjet printer/scanner combo
(next to the laser cutter). Instructions on how to connect to them would be
great!
if you don't have a wiki login, please request one and it will be approved!
-jake
The vending machine now provides some more feedback after money is put in.
Source code associated with my contribution is here. I haven't documented
the other components of the vending machine.
https://thomaslevine.com/scm/sudo-vending
Based on the implementation details, it appears to me that
the bill acceptor is in fact plugged into one board (Arduino Leonardo)
that is connected by serial to another board (Raspberry Pi). Why is
the former board used at all? That is, why is the bill acceptor not
plugged directly into the latter board?
I'm updating the sudoRoom website. For the projects link in the header it's now pointed to the wiki for the cool projects (new placeholder for the fixit clinic, etc)
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Cool_Projects
I'm also adding what meetings we do have in there... I guess folks should know even an hour before or how meetings transpired int he past!
Also will be sprucing up the blog with photos that Andrew took this year. thanks Andrew sorry I neglected it
Tonight we have a delegates' meeting. I didn't make it to the last one and I
didn't do a good job of relaying the discussions (seen in the following
meeting notes) to this list so that people could weigh in on them:
https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Event:2022/12/15_Delegates
Tonight in the meeting the elephant in the room was a sudden proposal to open
the ballroom (and basement to some extent) to use as an "emergency shelter" as
written here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/13JXhQ5Oefuf5DXvSd_sZZI6QbeKcrsmjOOtV5MW…
that proposal is for opening parts of the omni tomorrow until wednesday as an
emergency shelter. We talked about it at length, and personally i am hopeful
that everything will go smoothly. Advertisements for Omni as a shelter have
somehow already appeared on instagram and twitter and even been
retweeted/advertised by the city of oakland on a list of storm shelters.
When it came time for the delegates to vote, I abstained or "stand aside" on
behalf of Sudoroom since I didn't get a chance to get input from our
membership on this proposal. It passed though, there were enough yes votes.
If anyone wants to help support ah shit this email isn't even going out until
the last day of the scheduled shelter event. They are now talking about
extending it another day.
As your delegate i should really be more on-top of things and not postpone
emails in the middle until they're too old to send.

Hi all,
My company had a fire incident with a laser cutter (let this be a lesson
for all of us about laser cutter safety!). Although most of the parts are
still good, they've decided to simply replace the entire machine with a new
one.
Let me know if you are interested in taking the old one. It's offered as-is
with no guarantees made and no responsibility taken, but we think it could
be brought back to working condition with a little elbow grease and,
obviously, replacing the cover.
The laser still works, as do the Y and Z axes. The X axis needs the belt
changed and the cover needs to be completely replaced. Then everything will
have to be recalibrated. We estimate it's something like 6-10 hours of work.
You would also need to arrange for transport from West Oakland.
It's a 100W Omtech unit
<https://omtechlaser.com/products/100w-co2-laser-engraver-cutter-usb-gr57-us>,
selling new for $3899. We really liked it, and replaced it with an
identical model.
Let me know if interested and when you could pick it up.
Tim
Hi! I was at sudoroom a few months ago and saw that there was an embroidery machine (babylock ellageo esg2 i think) in the downstairs sewing lab. It was kind of disassembled at the time. Does anyone happen to know if it's working or needs parts/repairs?

We are looking for informed and motivated individuals to promote our
tools and services to local media, civil society, democratic movements
and activist organizations. You will help us define and lead outreach
strategies in your country/ies of focus, offer onboarding support and
help users coordinate with our helpdesks. In turn, you will receive

ambassadors from the 2023 priority list (see bottom of this email).
*2. **CENO Chrome Extension Developer
<https://equalit.ie/job-post/chrome-extension-developer-for-the-dweb/>**: *
eQualit.ie is seeking an experienced developer for the decentralized web
who is motivated by FOSS solutions for defending freedom of expression
and association online. The short contract is to create a Chrome
extension that will replicate the functionality of *CENO Browser*
<https://censorship.no> on desktop environments. CENO (short for
Censorship.no!) is a tool designed to circumvent the most repressive
forms of Internet censorship and provide content distribution continuity
during network shutdowns. Built on Mozilla for Android, CENO Browser
utilizes the *Ouinet library <https://ouinet.work>* (also built by the
eQualitie team) to retrieve and then share web content peer-to-peer over
BitTorrent’s DHT.
Your responsibilities would include:
* Research and development of a prototype Chrome extension for Ouinet,
the peer-to-peer library powering CENO Browser;
* Technical feasibility analysis and project roadmapping for future
stable release;
* Documenting work toward long-term maintenance and reproducibility.
*3. **iOS Developer for OuiSync + Briar:

Working within a tight-knit team on OuiSync <https://ouisync.net/>,
Briar <https://briarproject.org/> and [potentially] CENO Browser
<https://censorship.no/>, your responsibilities would include
identifying, prototyping and documenting methods for an iOS app to
achieve the following goals:
* Discover and connect to nearby peers (iOS and Android) without
needing internet access (e.g. Bluetooth, local multicast);
* Investigate use of mDNS and DNS-SD on iOS and its interoperability
with Android;
* Investigate options for the app to run in the background under
various networking conditions;
* Sharing application data as files with other iOS applications.

A real estate agent who contacts me when she have a house with tools to
empty has a place in the Elwood District that has to be cleaned out by
January 4. Celena and I visited today. The owners had a load of
electronic gear and cables that might be of interest to your crew. If
not, it's headed to e-waste. I'll be there tomorrow at about 10:30, if
you or any of the FixIt folk want to join us.
On a Related Front: Years ago I picked up some electronics that had
been used to install solar hot water systems. Nice-looking old-style
meters that I'd intended to install in our grandkids' treehouse to give
it a second life as a space ship or submarine. They weren't interested
and the stuff has been gathering dust in my shop. Does that sort of
thing hold any interest for you?
On a Related Front #2: Picked up many bolts of cloth from an upholstery
shop cleaning its warehouse. Four or five of them didn't pass my wife's
inspection. Would your sewing shop be interested?
And so on like that...

if you go to https://omnicommons.org/blog/calendar/
you see a "sign up for our newsletter: Email address ______________ Subscribe"
banner, partially covering up Ashley, 26 (who is online now) but not covering
her boobs.
It's been like this for weeks apparently (I just noticed) and we don't know
what's going on.
Does anyone know wordpress and IT security and can take a look and figure out
what's going wrong in there?

Hi all 👋
I’ve used the laser cutter at noisebridge a bunch of times but never at sudo room. Instructions here look pretty good! https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Big_red_laser_cutter Do people prefer if I get a training from someone at sudo room to use it? I need to do some last minute laser Xmas gifts, hoping to come by tmw afternoon and give it a shot. Thoughts?
Alternatively, is there anyone who is comfortable with the laser printer and might be around tomorrow afternoon?

I've mentioned this before, but there are cool crafts, board games, and
thrift stores just across the street from the Omni Commons. I know that the
fix it clinic was trying to get some workshops organized with the east bay
depot for reuse too.
When I bicycle to SudoRoom (as opposed to driving) I usually spend more
time at the neighboring shops since they're ont he protected bike lane.
(When I'm in the car i just park my car and beeline fro sudoroom heh!).
I usually notice each of the shops has a community class night. There was a
kitchenware crafts store that had an educational night for learning how to
grow mushrooms. The board game shop has community board game nights... an
event that we have plenty of tables and equipment for!
I don't think we have to be too commercial but there has to be a way to
bring all that foot traffic to sudoroom somehow. and not just during
special community events.

hey sudo room!
There's a company in SF following the trends and shutting down its office
this week. There's all kinds of free things available, wondering if anyone
here would be interested in them, either personally or for Sudo/Omni?
here's what they wrote
" numerous office supplies, cabinets, all the kitchen supplies, a lot of
electronics including 15 computer towers (hard drives have been removed but
you can buy decent internal or external drives inexpensively), 10 older
desktop monitors, 20 Shoreline VOIP phones, all the office desk cubicles,
chalk boards, white boards, and a whole lot more " in the video I saw
office supplies, kitchen supplies, cleaning supplies as well..
I heard that the computers are gone, but i'll verify that when i go. My
car got stolen in october, and i'm wondering if anyone would be
interested+available in going with me friday morning ~10a to the north
beach neighborhood of SF to see what they have and if it can be of use for
you, your orgs/house, omni, sudo, etc..
ttfn,
ajay
Hi Sudo! I'm looking for work.
If you'd like to share a relevant JD, do an intro, or just chat, just
holler!
Summary below, more available on request, and thanks for reading. =)
*My skillsets & work experience!*
- Frontend UI JavaScript development
- Graphic design & editorial illustration
- Professional fluency in Mandarin Chinese & Polish
- Product design (specifically sports apparel)
- Math BA from fancy school (m'brain's empty but who needs to know?)
- Highly detail- and order-oriented (with medications to boot!)
*What kind of role?*
- Want to use and grow my coding skills, but most excited to combine
with creative work across disciplines.
- Especially interested in anything involving user interfaces and data,
at any level.
- Open to QA, user-testing, or similar roles where systematicity and
meticulousness is an asset, but it wouldn't be my end-goal.
- If you think I could contribute to a position that doesn't match the
above, I'm still very open to exploring new possibilities.
- Not too jazzed about traditional software engineer or full-stack
developer roles, unless short-term or on a remarkable team and project.
*What kind of employment arrangement?*
- Fulltime is the main goal, but also interested in short-term including
contract.
- I've been freelancing since 2019 and am open to new projects that are
solid, interesting, and funded.
- Would like to work at least partially onsite with a flex schedule, but
I do have location constraints within the Bay Area.
- Required travel could actually be exciting, but under 25% of total
time.
- Compensation past basic needs is whatever to me, it's everything else
that matters.
- I have US and EU citizenship.
*What kind of company?*
- Organizations with 20 to 200 people are my fave, but that's not a
strict dealbreaker.
- Municipal and other public employers rank highly in my book.
- I like a team's core philosophy to emphasize service to society in
some way.
- Company culture should be able to retain curious and empathetic people
over time.
*Which industry?*
- Health (most relevant experience)
- Fabrication (some experience in textiles but overall interest is high)
- Mobility esp. public transit
- Utilities esp. energy & sanitation
- Education
- Visual arts
- Sports & entertainment
Contact if you'd like more info, and thanks again!

Subject: [dorkbotsf] CCA seeking instructors for intro programming/Arduino
course
To: Dorkbot-Blabber <dorkbotsf-blabber(a)googlegroups.com>
Hi all,
It was great to see some friendly faces on Zoom last month!
Apologies in advance for the spam -- CCA has been seeking new faculty to
join the Computational Practices minor, a new program there for students
from across the college to develop technical literacy with code, hardware,
and other computational tools, and apply that literacy to their work as
artists and designers.
This specific call is for an adjunct instructor to teach Computational
Practices 1, which is being offered in person on the San Francisco campus
in Spring 2023, running Thursday evenings 7:15-10:15pm. The course
covers JavaScript (via p5.js) and Arduino in an introductory setting,
focusing on basic authoring in the context of small interactive sketches
and sensing robots.
Please forward to anyone you think might be interested, and feel free to
reach out with questions -- or apply directly at:
https://cca.submittable.com/submit/222237/critical-studies-adjunct-pool-par…
Best,
J.D.

.
I started a circus arts project and I'm going to start with self-taught
juggling at sudoroom!
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/CircusArts
I ordered my juggling balls, now is the time. I am pretty busy but I think
I'm going to try to put in at least 10 minutes of juggling at least during
hardware hack night. I know a lot of you nerds probably juggle too and just
imagine all the cool hardware hack projects we can wreak!
I went to Mexico and met some cool circus arts performers from the
tlacuachircus in Sayulita https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfsjzbJ51DA&t=53s
Maybe someday we can cosmically link to them either in person or virtually
through light projections! At the very least we can support their efforts!

Hi Sudoroom,
in two weeks we will have another Delegate's meeting and I will be asked to represent Sudoroom's position on hiring this person (on a contract basis) to be a Financial Coordinator for Omni.
Emily has been coming through sudoroom occasionally for years, including bringing catering food when it was left over after big events. I trust she'll do a good job in this position, and provide Omni with a lot of guidance toward finding a new lender, as well as other related financial tasks we have to keep working on.
Please discuss! Ideally we will have a meeting and discuss it, but don't hesitate to talk about it here.

From: Emily B <accurate1707(a)gmail.com>
To: consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org
Subject: [omni-consensus] Proposal: Hire Emily as Omni Financial Coordinator
(CFO)
Hi Consensus,
It has been discussed through finance and the delegates meeting to hire
someone who can coordinate exciting financial tasks that keep the building
going. Discussion at the recent meeting can be found here:
https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Event:2022/11/17_Delegates
Delegates requested I send a proposal for bringing me on as the Financial
Coordinator, including a description of what that role is. In another
organization this might be called Chief Financial Officer or Head of
Finance, but given the horizontal structure we went with "Omni Financial
Coordinator" to illustrate it is a point person or coordination role. The
title and description is following a two hour interview done in the
delegates meeting and time spent outside with the Finance working group. A
description of qualifications is located in the consensus archive listed
here: https://omnicommons.org/pipermail/consensus/2022-November/003720.html
*Proposal*: Hire Emily as Omni Financial Coordinator (CFO) using the
description and outline below
*Description*
Financial Coordination - budgeting, analysis, forecasting, and reporting to
delegates the financial status of Omni accounts in the past, present, and
future
Fiscal Sponsorship and Funds Support - financial operations and
transactional support to internal teams
Financial Operations - coordination of accounts payable, accounts
receivable, treasury, general ledger accounting, and statutory filings for
the Omni and associated entities
Grants and Impact Investments - grants and impact investment priorities,
policies, and strategies
Real Estate - coordination of financial aspects of property in East Bay
"What does this mean?" The focus is on understanding what the Omni needs to
keep the building going, maintaining and improving those processes (with
input when people have interest as this is an often overlooked role).
*Examples of focus projects in financial coordination*
- Omni mortgage loan coordination (keeping the building collectively owned,
and open)
- Organizing finance data to bank standards for a mortgage team
- Coordination of tax exemption status with orgs and city
- Creation of workflows and training for finance roles
- Review of grants list for non-loan income
These are things everyone does a bit of, with a person who has expertise in
the field making sure they are happening and that there are people
available and trained for the tasks to happen.
*Prior discussions*
- It was at first proposed to have one position for all things. Then to
break that into Finance Coordinator and Building Operations Coordinator
because there is enough work for those to be individual roles. My
qualifications were for either and I am focusing on Finance for this period
- The amount of time per week was suggested to be 10-15 hours per week
to start, and full time at some later point. Time per week can be changed
with agreement from both parties as needed
- It has been debated whether to use W2 employee or 1099 contractor
- - Omni's advice was that if the person is already doing work in the field
a 1099 is acceptable under CA rules
- A question was asked what if the contract needs to end early. The answer
is to include a termination provision. This releases legal liability of
contract length. An accessible language explanation can be found here:
https://www.insperity.com/blog/how-to-smoothly-end-an-independent-contracto…
- The Omni has historically hired finance contractors
As such the proposal is for Emily to be hired as a Financial Coordinator in
a contract role at 10-15 hours a week for six months, at a rate discussed
by finance, with time to be adjusted if agreed by both parties.
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to hearing from you all.
Warmly,
Emily B
*Hi All,*
*Can someone please tell me the difference between a comrade and a member?
Specifically, can a comrade attend meetings and use the Omni?*
*I have been paying dues as a comrade for quite some time now. Do I need to
apply for membership, or does it not make much of a difference?*
*Stay safe.*
*Stay aware.*
*Best,*
*Ira Brightman*
Hi Sudoroom,
I'm writing from the Long Haul in Berkeley, a space kinda similar to the Omni.
We are quickly accumulating a bunch of half full ink tubes which our printer decides are empty based on reading/writing the RFID chip on the tube. Its calculated based on the number of pumps. The machine is a Riso RZ990.
I am wondering if anybody at Sudo is interested to collaborate on keeping these tubes out of the landfill by re-writing the RFID chips to show a full tube? Maybe this is something to drop by Hardware hack night on?
(In the longer term we hope to fix the machine to avoid this problem in the first place. Come visit us sometime and see our print room - it's great for making posters and zines.) reprographixed.com
