Lack of email reminders to members has been an issue for awhile now.
It occurred to me that perhaps this was just a Stripe setting - seems it
was!
So now members will be notified by email when their payment fails, and
notified 1 month in advance of an expiring card.
https://stripe.com/docs/receipts#failed-payment-alerts
Is this problematic to anyone?
CC'ing some CCL folks who've mentioned this before.

There was a (neighborhood wide?) power outage this morning.
Unfortunately, after power came back online, WiFi did not. There is no Omni
Commons ssid available (I checked in several locations through the Omni).
Also unfortunately, nobody present knows how to resolve things.
FYI, in case relevant, I believe that (internet access via) the modem came
back online after the outage (because the relevant lights on the modem seem
to be flashing correctly, as far as I can tell.) I've been told (but have
not verified) that (at least some) wired connections here do have internet
access.

This Saturday, come join us for a whole day workshop (8am to 8pm!) on
building a 3D printer at Counter Culture Labs, with some of the folks from
Open Source Ecology.
Build the open source 3D Printer with the lowest part count in the world.
Learn about 3D Printing with step-by-step guidance in a supportive
environment.
To support Counter Culture Labs, this workshop hosted by Open Source
Ecology is $10 recommended, but no one turned away due to lack of funds and
free to participate (please register using the link below). Walk-ins are
very welcome, especially if you're curious and want to swing by for a few
hours or less -- Open Source Ecology wants to share something new and
impressive with you. Register for FREE here:
https://microfactory.opensourceecology.org/portfolio/1-day-3d-printer-works…
We’ll show you step-by-step how to build this modular design in an
accessible and straightforward way. You’ll appreciate how an open source 3d
printer is designed and experience how teams can work together to build
something amazing, even if they’re novices. Each team takes a 3D printer
home to their community that they can use to build community-scale
infrastructure or make 3D printed objects.
To take a printer home, the price is $799. Compared with other open source
3D printers, ours can be built with off-the-shelf parts and our part count
is half the others, making it easier to understand, build, and maintain.
Because it is part of the Global Village Construction Set (for more info,
please watch our founder's TED talk here:
https://www.ted.com/talks/marcin_jakubowski), the OSE 3D printer is
designed to scale and handle industrial production, which means if you want
to some day build a 3 foot printer, this is the printer for you.
Additionally, every CAD design of the 3D printer is available in its
entirety, so if you want to change out printer heads to print something
other than PLA or ABS plastic, our design makes this process significantly
easier, especially because we have a 300 page manual to support builders
and a process to continually improve documentation.
Claim your 3D printer TODAY for 1 of 2 possible builds by registering here:
https://microfactory.opensourceecology.org/portfolio/1-day-3d-printer-works…
Schedule
The event runs 8am-8pm. Specific timing depends significantly on how we
progress as a group but generally we follow a timeline like this:
8am: Introduction. Applications of the 3D Printer Construction Set.
9am: Morning Build Session
12pm: Break
1pm: Afternoon Build Session
5pm: Break
6pm: Printer Calibration & First Prints
7pm: Review and Learning Discussion
8pm: Event ends
Special Offer
Registration secures your placement in this workshop to build and take home
a 3D Printer. Participants are welcome to bring along one or more persons
to share in the educational experience and assist the build for no extra
cost. The workshop is a fast-paced collaborative experience and goes well
with many helping hands!
Please register HERE to attend:

Hey Sudoers,
I'd like to invite you to take a trip down south to Hayward this Saturday for the GRAND OPENING of our brand new Downtown Hayward Library! My group, the Hayward Techies & Makers will be participating in the new Makerspace on the 2nd floor. We'll be demoing 3D printing, and a "Table of Circuits" breadboard activity. There will also be a smaller version of the Flaschen-Taschen LED wall-of-beer-bottles on display.
Date: Saturday October 27th.
Time: 11 am - Dedication ceremony, Library will open at noon, close at 5pm.
Place: 888 C Street, Hayward, CA 94541
Google Maps link:
https://goo.gl/maps/8PD925ww9zM2
Short walk from the Downtown Hayward BART station (recommended). If driving, downtown parking is free, but the garage next to the library will likely fill up quickly. You may try parking at the BART station (opposite side), then walk over. Another spot to try is the nearby Lucky's rooftop.
Once you arrive, come up to the 2nd floor Makerspace to say hi!

Hey Sudo Room,
I hear that Hardware Hack Night is this Tuesday, 7-9pm. I want to invite
anyone interested to come down to the basement and join us in hacking on
CCL's large liquid handling robot.[image: IMG_20170705_232100946.jpg]
There are lots of neat projects we could use help with, like:
- Wiring and programming Arduinos to run lab equipment
- Figuring out how OpenPCR <https://openpcr.org/>units are supposed to
work and how we can control them remotely
- Making stepper motors open and close a freezer door
- General thinking about cool things we could do with this robot
Conveniently, we're in the basement from 7-9pm every other Tuesday
(including this Tuesday, 10/23). Drop in!

Hi Sudo & CCL members,
Open Insulin <http://openinsulin.org/> is in *dire* need of a website redesign. It’s been pretty basic, but we’re looking to do more with it: post regular science updates & blog entries, provide solid information on how to contribute, and include more resources for further research.
Anthony can do the coding, but it would super sweet if anyone ++ wants to step up to take creative direction on this. It is a great way to be a part of this project, even if you don’t have lab skills (at the moment). I would have loved to help take this on, but counterculturelabs.org <https://www.counterculturelabs.org/> also so badly needs an overhaul so I’ll be focusing my efforts there for now. If you are interested, ping me directly please and I’ll get you started!
Also, join us any Wednesday @6pm at CCL if you want to be looped into what we’ve been up to.
Love & robots,
Ramy

Hi Keoni - do you have any pipettes for the OT-2?
We installed it right on the boundary between CCL and Sudo for now. Once we
start doing real experiments, we should move it into the wetlab though.
We also happen to have a Biometra TRobot, which is essentially a
thermocycler with an automated lid, so it can be easily incorporated into a
liquid handling robot. That should give us an ideal platform for PCR
applications on the Opentrons...
DNA barcoding of mushroom species is probably our #1 killer app for this
robot. When Alan Rockefeller comes back from his current outing throughout
Mexico, he will likely bring several hundred mushroom samples with him, all
of which will need to be submitted to PCR amplification and Sanger
sequencing. Alan usually mashes each sample with a little plastic pestle in
an Eppendorf tube - not sure how to replicate that on the robot, but we
could brainstorm a little device to macerate mushroom samples...

Are you manufacturing something with plastic? How much do you expect to pay
for your molds? $10,000? Maybe even $100,000? If you are a startup and
don't have the capital or the volumes to justify expensive plastic molds,
manufacturing out of sheet acrylic might be the answer for you.
Myself (Ruth) and Rik are running a sheet acrylic manufacturing workshop.
We make the whole process accessible, from teaching joints/cutting/bending
to sharing local prototyping contacts and hosting a 30 minute Q&A with a
Chinese contract manufacturer. The workshop is from 9:30AM to 12:30PM on

BioPrinting is 3D printing with living cells. Think of printing a new heart
or kidney for a patient needing a transplant! Or a bit more DIY-accessible:
how about printing an artificial leaf, as a proof of principle that we can
make a functioning (plant) organ?
As some of you know, I've been heavily involved in the BioPrinter project
at Biocurious for the past several years. And I've been wanting to get a
parallel group of the ground at CCL as well.
I plan to give an overview of bioprinting in general, go over what we've
done in the Bioprinter group away Biocurious so far, get hands-on with the
current hardware (which I've absconded from BioC for the week), and discuss
plans to restart a Bioprinting group at CCL.
Lots of overlap with our existing lab robotics and plant bio groups as
well...
Hope to see you tonight!

i guess i can't participate in IRC anymore because i can't figure out how to
configure SSL on irssi
when i try to join sudoroom it says:

so i googled SSL irssi and it says:

/network add -sasl_username <login> -sasl_password <password> -sasl_mechanism PLAIN freenode
/server add -auto -net freenode -ssl -ssl_verify chat.freenode.net 6697
/save
i'm guessing <login> and <password> are something that i have to type there but
I don't know what they are or how to find them. So i can't be in IRC until i
figure that out.
as if IRC wasn't already exclusionary enough?

Subject: [omni-consensus] 2 new proposals for Thursday
To: "consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org" <consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org>
*Two Proposals for 9/20 Delegates Meeting*
The second proposal is for a new process to evaluate new potential member
collectives. The goal was to make it clearer for everyone, fairer, and
shorter.
The first proposal is for specific criteria that new and existing MCs must
have and maintain. This appears to be much more controversial than the
process proposal - it has many comments and the process proposal has almost
none.
These will be on the pad for their first discussion. Here is the link to
the google doc of both proposals with comments:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QV6vAXjWXfxcVNn7othRLbGv
b2ozFb9VxKpWZCV9PXU/edit?usp=sharing
Text of both proposals pasted here, but I suggest you read it on the doc so
you can see the comments:
*Proposal 1: Criteria to become and remain an Omni Commons Member
Collective*
* 1. Have a minimum of 5 active members. Active members are those who
participate in the organization’s decisions by participating in meetings,
responding to email or other online decision-related discussions,
performing administrative work, and leading programmatic activities. People
who only attend events are not counted as active members. 2. Be a
collective: a non-hierarchical group (5 members) with a participatory
decision making process. 3. Fulfill requirements to delegate a board
member, and to send members to serve on Omni working groups: 1. Each member
collective should have a minimum of 2 members active in working groups
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Working_Groups>. Collectives should make an
effort to send 1 additional WG participant for every 10 active members. 2.
(Previously: Each Member Group of the Omni will be required to populate at
least 3 seats in at least 3 committees. Member Groups with more than 12
members will be required to populate at least 5 seats in at least 3
committees. (Passed 2014/08/28 Delegates Assembly)) 4. Endorse the Omni
Commons statement of solidarity
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Statement_of_Solidarity>, statement of
purpose <https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Founding_Document>, and safer space
policy <https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Safer_Space_Policy>, and demonstrate
how the activities of the collective contribute to them. Also, this song
<https://youtu.be/Hx4TmaY3alE>. 5. Be either a tenant or a fiscally
sponsored project of Omni Commons. 6. Contribute materially to the Commons
via rent, fiscal sponsorship fee, or other resources. If a collective fails
to uphold their material commitments for more than 2 months, they are
considered “inactive” and forfeit any benefits provided by their membership
(such as use of common space and a vote at Delegates Council meetings)
until previous commitments are met. *
* (Note 1: If an existing member collective's meeting schedule doesn't fit
into the delegates meeting schedule for a new member application, it MUST
hold a special meeting/consultation to deal with the application, out of
respect for the new applicant group.) (Note 2: Groups using space at Omni
Commons can also be just tenants or fiscally sponsored projects without
having the additional benefits and responsibilities of being a member
collective. However, it benefits OC to have as many groups as possible
contributing to the work and decision-making, and we should set a maximum
ratio of non-member resident groups to member collectives, perhaps 1:4.) *
-----------------------------------------------------
*Proposal 2: New Member Collective Application Process*
* (What follows is more or less what would appear on the wiki and in the
handbook as instructions to new potential MCs. It would be presented in a
more graphically clear format.) Decide if your group meets our basic
requirements. - Please read about our vision / governing principles
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Self-Governance>, to determine if your
collective is willing and able to collaborate within the structure and
culture we have co-created so far. - Review our criteria for becoming and
remaining a member collective. - If you don’t think you meet the Member
Collective criteria, there are other ways your group can participate in the
Omni. Talk to the Finance Working Group. -----> Let us know you are
interested in joining Omni Commons by talking to a delegate or the finance
working group. - A process guide will be assigned to you to help you
navigate the member collective application process. - They will give you
the information you need and answer your questions. Write your application
using the questions below. Keep it as brief as possible while still
answering the questions: - What do you do that makes a difference in the
world? - Briefly recap your history as an organization. - What is your
incorporation status? (501c3? Unincorporated Association? etc) - How do you
make decisions? - State your goals for becoming an Omni member collective.
- How would your presence in the Omni contribute to its purpose and
Statement of Solidarity? - Explain how you will finance your Omni
membership dues/rent. - Describe what dedicated physical space (if any) you
need. What will you do in the dedicated space? What can you do in shared
space? Will you need to make any modifications of the building? Include
floor plans if that makes your proposal clearer. Application review
process: 1. Submit your application to the Omni Delegates in writing at
consensus(a)omnicommons.org <consensus(a)omnicommons.org> and
discuss(a)omnicommons.org <discuss(a)omnicommons.org> 2. Present your
application proposal at the next Delegates meeting (First and Third
Thursdays at 7pm). Delegates will ask questions and give you preliminary
feedback about the proposal. In the 2 weeks following the meeting,
delegates will discuss your proposal with their collectives. 3. Attend
collective meetings if invited to further explain your proposal.
Incorporate feedback into your application proposal. 4. Legal and financial
review 1. The Omni Finance Working Group will review your financials
(Budget, balance sheet, P & L), size, incorporation status, space needs,
and reach an agreement with you about your financial contribution and legal
relationship to Omni Commons. 2. If you need to make modifications to the
building, Finance may ask you to get preliminary inspections, consult with
the Building Working Group, or provide other information to determine if
the changes are possible and advisable. 3. If necessary, the Omni legal
advisor will advise about your legal relationship to the Omni. 4. Update
your proposal with this agreement. 1. Attend a 2nd Delegates meeting to
discuss your updated proposal. Ideally this would be the next Delegates
meeting, but if the delegates and you agree, it may be scheduled for the
2nd meeting following. Delegates will report on and discuss the feedback
they received from their collectives, and if there are any blocking or
serious concerns that can’t be resolved at the meeting, contact information
will be shared so that further discussion can happen between you and the
groups or persons with the concern. 2. Before the next Delegates meeting,
attend collective meetings, and/or communicate with Omni members as needed
to discuss any remaining issues. 3. Attend the next (3rd) Delegates meeting
and present your updated application proposal for a final discussion. You
will be asked to leave the building and the delegates will reach a
decision. The process guide will notify you of the decision. If approved,
finalize your membership 1. Sign a contract with Omni Commons, either a
lease or fiscal sponsorship agreement. 2. Obtain insurance coverage as
described in your contract 3. Read Member Collective Handboo
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lQrDIBz1zg5xUl2quCA3RBWvINBnABb6UkWHoVs…>k.
(Sign document stating that the collective members read the Handbook?) 4.
Select a delegate to the Delegates Assembly (Board of Directors) 5. Pay
deposit/rent/fiscal sponsorship fee, per agreement 6. Move in! 7. Have at
least two collective members join an Omni Working Group
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Working_Groups>.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Internal Considerations for Deciding upon New Resident or MC Organizations
- Does the group meet the member collective requirements? - Groups
consisting of affected people doing liberatory organizing should be
recruited and given priority. - The ratio of Member Collectives to
non-member collective resident organizations should stay above 4:1. - Does
the group understand the way OC works, especially the concept of the
commons, space sharing, limitations on locked space, and consensus process?
- A new collective is more likely to succeed at Omni if they have
previously existed, are well established, have experience with
consensus/participatory decision making, have spent time at OC (eg by
holding events or meetings), and/or the members have worked together
previously. - Consider if a new tenant or member collective should have a
trial period and get settled before doing any construction. *

matt.mock(a)gmail.com). It's functioning, mechanically and electronically. I'll
be around just tomorrow (Thursday) and heading north thereafter.
(picture is of a similar lift, not the exact one since it's dark right now)
Thanks Everyone! Take Care!

--------------------------
Good news!
Starting next week (9/4), the trash (brown) and compost (green) bins
will be picked up by Waste Management twice a week on Tuesdays and
Fridays. I haven't added an additional recycling pick up yet, so blue
bin pickup remains on Wednesday.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Phil/FNB have usually been the
ones putting trash cans out on the sidewalk for pickup. Can other
individuals or collectives assume responsibility for one of these trash
days so that the additional work isn't falling on one person/group? In
general, if you are around on the afternoon/evening before a pick up,
please see if you can help with this task.
Please continue to sort your trash and put move it to the correct bin in
the trash room. Events that generate trash as still required to take it
away at the end of the event.
Thank you
Laura
Hi all,
Sudo-room is currently broke. Not taking in enough money to cover expenses nor plan for any future needs.
Who is interested in reviewing the financial situation and brainstorming some recommendations for bringing in additional funds? I’m happy to help set and track goals.
Thanks,
The Cap’n
The prior report was sent before I'd reconciled Sudo Room's transactions for the month - here's the updated report -
and YAY, we're in the black for the first time in over a year! This would seem mostly due to a $570 mobile deposit, I'm assuming made by Charley upon calculating cashbox income over the past few months. So we still should be striving to build up another couple hundred dollars of monthly recurring income

Subject: [omni-comms] BART Police Propose Surveillance Dragnet

We knew that one day the Domain Awareness Center would come back.
On Thursday, BART police will propose a system-wide security dragnet for
the Bay Area's transit system, hoping to get the board to greenlight it
before the passage of a surveillance transparency ordinance.
BART police are asking the board to approve the project in concept and
authorize trials at Lake Merritt and Civic Center BART stations.
*No privacy policy. No civil rights impact assessment. No data storage and
access rules.*
*No go. *
We need a strong public showing on Thursday morning to tell BART that* this
will not stand. *
The Bay Area has rejected wall to wall surveillance every time it has
reared its head.
BART is planning to use the same platform that was proposed as the "brains"
of the Domain Awareness Center (PSIM). The plan calls for 2000 CCTV
cameras to be converted to IP-based for geospatial tagging and advanced
real-time video analytics, likely facial recognition technologies already
proven to be inaccurate and biased.

August 9 Meeting Agenda
BART has sat on its hands and delayed the adoption of a surveillance
technology ordinance approved by its tech commiitee in* 2016. *
Now BART Police are attempting to *rush through* an aggressive new
surveillance network with only 72 hours notice.
There are plenty of common sense things BART could do with $15-25 million
dollars to improve security on the transit system without treating every
passenger like a criminal suspect.
The last thing Nia Wilson would want is her death used to increase the
high-tech harassment of Black and Brown people.

Hello,
Has anyone lost any glasses in sudoroom?
Aaaaand has anyone found some ID cards, clipper card, etc. with my name and
picture on them? Because I'm pretty sure I lost them somewhere at or around
the omni, four cards total :/
Thanks :)
Lesley
Hi all,
I'm bringing over a bunch of electronics components from BioCurious this
afternoon. I have three parts drawer racks, plus several more bins with
plastic baggies of parts. Mostly discrete components, but there are some
chips and a few short tapes of surface mount components.
These all look to be very new, well organized and labeled, so I think they
will come in very handy for the electronics hackers at Sudo.
Patrik
Anyone interested in this stuff?
