Hi all,
I notice a giant accumulation of “stuff” on the soldering workbench closest to main area past week. Now there is only a tiny corner to work at. It would be nice if we could keep that area open. Suggestions for clearing this area and finding a home for this?
The Cap’n
thanks Robb for installing fresh linux onto the 3D printer computer!
lots of people helped to get our giant snarl of white filament onto a nice
spool, which is situated over the printer, and it extrudes cleanly now.
I also checked that the bed is level, and it is. So i'm guessing it would
print OK. But I ran out of steam setting up slic3r.
so if anyone wants to work on that, go ahead. The hardware should be ready to
go.

my wifi connection to Omni Commons wifi keeps going up and down every few
minutes, and it's annoying.
i thought it was just me and my crappy laptop. when it first started
happening, it was right when sudoroom (and the whole omni) got a new router
computer. we kept the old one around because it's still running things, and
it's the computer where people can run whatever projects around sudoroom (like
the Laser Printer access page at http://100.64.64.88 ) without worrying about
messing up the router.
today I forgot my laptop power adaptor so i've been using a random laptop
booted off of a USB stick, and it's doing the exact same thing!
do we have a rogue DHCP server or something? I have heard other people
complain that the same thing is happening to them too.

Dear Sudoers,
Rick Simon ("Ricardo"), beloved by many, passed away on November 29, 2017. He was 48, born 1/23/1969 - originally from Miami, Florida. Rick lived in San Francisco and Oakland over the past decade. He was much involved in the community, including co-founding the Bay Area Community Exchange (BACE) Timebank, a bartering exchange system to help the local economy during the recession. He also participated in the Occupy Movement in SF and Oakland.
We, the members of the BACE Timebank, would like to commemorate his life, bring people together to talk about many of all the things Rick was involved in and cared about, and to do a volunteer drive in order to rescue some of his efforts.
Rick impacted a lot people’s lives, and we’ve been moved by hearing of his passing. This event will be an opportunity to benefit from his energy, by bringing to life some of the efforts that he is no longer able to put energy into.

it took me a minute to find this link (thanks Patrik) reminding us how to use
the sudoroom laser cutter, but here it is.
Is there someone who is willing to meet with Zerena (cc'd in this email) who
wants to use the laser cutter?
actually i've been noticing a lot of interest in the laser cutter so it would
be good to schedule a training. I'd go.

There is actually a laser cutter in Sudo Room that we can use (and their 3D
printer may or may not be fixed again as well). The old page at RIT that
describes the laser cutter is no longer up, but here's the last version on

should we have a new mailinglist for people working on the vending machines?
long ago we created one for "printing" which was to include 3D printing as well
as paper printing, but it never got used. Do mailinglist take up a lot of
space or weight or cost or anything? Any reason not to?
Or perhaps vending machine discussion should just be in the regular
sudo-discuss list and everybody gets to follow along or not as they will?

agreed with laura 100%. given previous threats of physical violence to sudo
room members (which i personally witnessed), non-consensus on there not
being a signed agreement (which i also experienced the consenso of
in-person) and lack of clarity on next steps & future accountability, i am
blocking this proposal on behalf of sudo room until the aforementioned
issues are addressed and actually consented-upon. cc'ing sudo-discuss.

is interested in starting to explore fundraising activities and goals?

i brought in a little box to connect to the sudoroom big TV, it goes between
the HDMI from the raspberry pi and the TV, and provides analog audio out.
The amplifier for the TV built-in speakers is fried. So i want to use external
speakers, so we can have the IRC voice work again, and whatever else.
the raspberry pi's built-in analog audio output doesn't work even when i tried
configuring it like the internet says. Maybe you have better luck, go ahead
and try.
Anyway, i don't know where the little box went. Do you?

hi Julian,
the sudoroom laser cutter is totally available for you to use. I'm CC'ing this
email to the sudoroom-discuss email list to find someone who can show you how
to use it, unless you're confident that you don't need to be shown anything.
when you use it, please make sure the ventilation fan near it is running, and
check the duct connections because they have been falling off recently, which
results in the room being filled with laser fumes despite the fan running.
thank you

Hi all,
I'm working on a long-term project to build a, say, 8 x 20 matrix display.
Each "pixel" hopefully maybe 2"x2" big. Hopefully one day to mount on the
wall in sudoroom and allow people to throw up text and Atari characters
etc. This is related to noisebridge display, but with a different
aesthetic. Is there a spot on the sudoroom website where I could document
my progress on this project, blog style? Otherwise I guess I would use
traditional blogging platform.
Thanks,
The Cap'n
Hey sudoers,
[cross-posting from mesh list]
Have you been dying to help build the People's Open Network, but aren't sure where to start. Maybe you've heard about our mysterious node mounts, but don't have a smartphone or aren't part of some __super secretive chat group__. Or perhaps you'd just like help selecting a local ISP for your new apartment. Fear not, we're here to help.
Starting this Sunday, Feb. 4th, SudoMesh be holding regular "office hours" on Sunday afternoons in SudoRoom. Running loosely from 1pm until late afternoon or early evening, this time serves dual purpose:
1. A jumping off point for people interested helping with a scheduled Sunday node mount, but who are not able to attend a Tuesday night meeting or are not "in the know."
2. A friendly, non-confrontational time for new people to get oriented to the project or just ask general questions about networking, the internet, and their service provider.
Finally, when either of these purposes are not present (i.e. no node mount, no new people), we will use the time to hold training sessions on a topic of choice, conduct outreach to potential node locations, address finances and purchasing, or tackle any other outstanding issues.
For this Sunday, we do not have a scheduled node mount yet and do not expect new people (since this just now being announced). Instead, we will be doing basic training on how lead or participate in a node mount. We will also be contacting and scheduling our existing list of node requests.
If you'd like to help out, stop by SudoRoom on Sunday, Feb. 4th, around 1pm.
Thanks and hope to see y'all on Sundays,
-grant

the rightmost vending machine now has a working dollar bill acceptor, and it's
powered up. it's connected to an arduino which connects to a raspberry pi
which is on the network at vending2.local
on that raspberry pi there is a serial port called
/dev/serial/by-id/usb-Arduino_LLC_Arduino_Leonardo-if00
which speaks serial at 115200 baud, saying stuff like
100 bill_acceptor
2000 bill_acceptor
500 bill_acceptor
when it gets a $1 bill, a $20, and a $5 respectively. Later it will say
coin_acceptor when coins are inserted, but presently they just fall into a
cardboard box inside the vending machine.
Charley has acquired a new lock for the vending machine and we should replace
the money box in the fridge with a sign saying people should put their money
into the vending machine, and signs in the vending machine explaining that.
The raspberry pi in the vending machine has speakers attached to it (which will
be moved to underneath the machine or on top of it) and someone should make a
webpage on it that shows the time and amount of money inserted, and also make
it say things when people put money in so that everybody knows.
if anyone wants access to the raspberry pi please let me know. Make it do
things. Make it have a video output that we can put on top of the vending
machine that displays interesting information and QR codes for receiving
bitcoin cash and ethereum and other stuff donations. Make it make interesting
noises to reward people for donating.
tonight will be a fine night for hacking on the machine, but you'll need to
contact me or Charley for physical access to the inside of the machine for now.

A few months ago about a dozen Core 2 Duo Lenovo boxes with 4 GB of RAM
materialized in the basement hall way. They were all left running with
the monitors on, but they had Windohs on them and the lock screens
required a password which was nowhere in evidence, and rebooting also
required a PW to log in. Anywho, since they just seemed to be heating
the basement, and it was summertime anyway I shut them all off, and did
so a couple of weeks later when I noticed they were powered back on
again. Since then they have mostly been off, and some folks know the
password and have been using them periodically. Someone blew Linux Mint
on one of the boxen.
The one on the far left (facing the wall) was unplugged, I plugged it
back in but it was beeping whenever it booted, but just required that I
open the case and clamp down the memory sticks, All Praise Cyber Jesus.
Since I had revived box from the dead like Lazarus I felt like no one
would object if I made it dual boot Linux as well as Windows 10. The
machines are mostly empty and have 300-500 GB hard drives, so I hacked
off 60 GB and copied a Debian 9 installation off of a flash drive, fixed
the fstab, installed grub, and set the machine to boot Windoze by
default. The USB wifi sticks are the only way for these things to get
internet since there is no ethernet cable in that hallway, but I managed
to get one working with Debian and it seems stable.
So unless someone objects I propose to set the rest of the machines to
boot automatically into Windows (and not require a PW when the screen
blanks) and also, I'd whack off a small chunk of their hard drives so
all the boxes dual boot Windows and Debian stable (except possibly the
Mint box, it may have been installed to stomp on the whole drive). It
will give me something to do and keep me out of the sun. This will not
adversely effect the Windows installations, which will still be
available to do whatever folks do in that OS.
Attached is a picture of the machine I mucked with, folks can go down
there and play around with it. As those of you are wise in the ways of
dual booting know, you can select Linux by using the "up arrow" key on
the keyboard to scroll to the Debian 9 "grub" entry and hit the Enter
key. It will automatically boot to a non-privileged "omni" account (PW:
omnivore) and it will hang for a few seconds at the lightdm display
manager to give you a chance to change the Linux desktop to taste (I
configured it for mate, xfce, cinnamon & KDE, and could add other
options if desired). You can also switch users to a "sudoroom" user,
that has sudo privileges, the PW is the same as the username, except in
drop case.
In a world without Gates who needs Windows?

Subject: [dorkbotsf-blabber] A123 Battery Teardowns
To: <dorkbotsf-blabber(a)googlegroups.com>

Hi all
Remember those A123 batteries I posted about, a couple weeks back? I’ve
found people to hold all our batteries. Wow! Thx to everyone who is helping
the Bayview BOOM. Some came from as far away as Chico, to cart away these
packs.
We’ve started to tear down the packs, and would be great to hear *your
suggestions on making the process easier and cheaper.* Please check out the
videos:
https://vimeo.com/252296535
password: M1A
https://youtu.be/MMrPjUwAmT0
Here’s one possible improvement:
*Problem - Removing plastic cover: *We had difficulty removing the plastic
cover. It’s time-consuming, very fiddly/wiggly, and lots of touching on or
near hot contacts.
*Issue*: the plastic “prongs” on the plastic cover must have been inserted
all at once, in a single downward motion, as described by Bob at the
BoxShop teardown.
*Solution: *Therefore, maybe the quickest removal is to somehow *pull the
entire cover straight up, in one motion,* after removing screws, punching
out the tabs, and releasing the nickel and insulator sheet from their
retainer. How to do that? Part of the difficulty is that the cover flexes.
If you pull it up by one end, it bends.
*Ideas:*
· *Top-plate: *Attach a rigid, non-conductive plate or wooden board
to the loose cover. Pull that straight up. The weight of the pack will
help. Problem: how to pull it straight up? Maybe attach a couple handles?
· *Bottom-clamp: *Invert the whole pack and lay it upside down,
with the unscrewed cover face down on the table. Then, somehow clamp just
the loose plastic cover to the table. Then pull the rest of the pack
straight up. Problem: it’s heavy.
Seems this approach has a possible added advantage that it might reduce the
amount of touching hot contacts by the human, thereby making this a
possibly safer approach.

There can also be more than one conflict steward at the same time if there are multiple ongoing conflicts. We do have an exchequer and I believe that rcsheets is currently it :)

Greetings Omninoms/sudoers/CCL'ers/meshers,
Last week, Omni's tall A-frame ladder disappeared from the entrance hall
(if anyone noticed someone exiting the building with a ~13' wooden ladder,
lmk).
Robb and I did a bit of research, and ladders that tall are hard to come by
and fairly expensive. This 15' A-frame Little Giant seems to be the best
bet:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00064C4SQ/
Our scaffolding is bulky, takes time to set up, and doesn't reach the
ceilings in the ballroom, entrance hall nor sudo/ccl. A bucket lift is ~10x
more expensive, and wouldn't be able to access some parts of the building
we'd use it in. With a ladder this size, we could use it for working on the
ceilings everywhere - and mesh could use it for our Sunday node mounts.
The cost is $674.80, so I'm proposing the following financial split:
* Omni - $330
* Sudo - $115
* CCL - $115
* Sudo Mesh - $115
Ideas on how best to securely store it?
Please let me know asap if there are any blocking concerns or better ideas.
I'll bring it up at the next sudoroom and mesh meetings and hopefully
someone can bring it up at CCL's.

Subject: Re: Oakland SUDO room purchase quoted lighting parts
To: jacques revera <jacquesrevera(a)gmail.com>
Sorry for not responding sooner, I'll get you the files in DXF format
today. I've attached them in DWG format to this email (since that is what I
had available without conversion).
...
Some notes about the design of the light box:
You will need two of each item I sent design files for. The scale of these
files is 1 unit = 1 mm.
If you want to modify the design to better suit your scanner, you will need
to reduce the distance between the lighting module front and lighting
module back. This affects the lighting module sides, the large baffles, and
the LED base plate.
The lighting module sides should be exactly the same, but reduced in width
by whatever is necessary to make it sit on the top of your scanner.
Similarly, the size of the large baffle needs to be reduced by the same
amount along its longest dimension.
The LED base plate is made from FR4. I included it in the shipment to you.
The reason it is FR4 is that it is meant to hold the lights which means
that any heat generated from the lights needs to be accounted for.
Something that is flammable or something that might distort and change
shape when it gets warm are bad choices. FR4 is great because it is both
flame and heat resistant.
The plate I sent will be too long. You could deal with this in two ways.
One way would be to remove the slots on top of the front/back plates and
have it just rest with a bit of overhang.
Another way would be to modify the plate so that it fits. You can cut FR4
with a saw (be careful because it is brittle). You can also drill FR4. So
you could cut it in half, then drill a couple of holes to bolt it back
together as a shorter length. If you do this, be very careful of the dust
generated. FR4 is fiberglass-reinforced. And fiberglass dust is dangerous.
Or if you have access to a waterjet, you could buy a piece of FR4 pretty
cheaply and use the waterjet to cut out a modified piece. If you want to do
this, let me know and I can send you the design file for it. You can't cut
FR4 with a laser AFAIK (heat resistant, flame resistant). And it would be a
bad idea to use a CNC router to cut it out (fiberglass dust is very bad for
you). This is why we pay a shop to cut out the LED base plates in batches
with a waterjet. But it is much more expensive to cut a one-off piece of a
different design.
Or if you don't want to modify the design of the lighting module, the
alternative is to add on to the scanner some pieces that would allow you to
rest the unmodified lighting module on top. I'm not sure how much bigger
the lighting module is. But it could be a 2x4 on each side would provide
enough extra width for example. I haven't had much experience with the
older hackerspace scanners, so I don't know for sure.

they had a laser cutter at Noisebridge when I visited there) and then you
spray paint them black. And you could cut them out as-is, or tweak the
design to better fit your scanner before cutting them out. I'd be happy to
give you advice as far as that is concerned.
What I would send you includes all the electrical stuff, fixtures, LED
lights, hardware, AC adapter, the LED base plate made from FR-4, lenses,
etc. So you would get everything but the plates themselves. The price would
be $150 and shipping cost to California is included in that price.

audio (which is the most important thing at panel and discussion events) -
especially if your sound is good and I take an audio feed from your board.

Hey sudo room people,
I am recent member of sudo room. I wanted to see who would be interested
in free Arduino classes for beginner programmers. I have the first class
online right now.
http://oaklandcodeschool.org/arduino-blockly/lesson-1-output/
I am going to be contacting GCEA about teaching for them and using the
computers they have provided for the Omni.
Let me know what you think. :)
Thank you
Noah
Hey Folks.
See thread below. We have a cool proposal to do a fun cross-disciplinary
activity in trying to build DIY microscopes with CCL and Sudo from a
talented maker guy from San Jose. Would Sudo be willing to collaborate on
this? I, as a sudo member, certainly would.

Hi Tom - sounds like a great idea! We do need to cap it at 50 and get Sudo
involved as well, since that is our max occupancy for the space that we
share with them.
I'm not sure info@sudoroom is the best email to contact them though - any
Sudo members following this conversation?

Hi Sudo Room and Counter Culture Labs;
I'm organizing a biology/microscope/programming/art/education Hack-A-Thon
as part of my work in the Center For Cellular Construction (a consortium
UCSF, SFSU, UC Berkeley, Stanford, The Exploratorium and IBM Research, see
https://ccc.ucsf.edu/).
*Is this something we could do at Sudo Room and/or Counter Culture Labs? *We
are planning it for a *Saturday or Sunday in mid-April for about 50
participants, free *with registration for crowd control and to get a good
mix of people and backgrounds. We want to attract the same kind of mix of
people that go to Sudo and Counter Culture Labs; scientists, tinkerers,
DIYs, programmers, biotech professionals, hackers, artists, teachers,
educators, and citizen scientists.
We will provide about 15 microscopes, 3 different kinds (5 of each); a $20
USB optical with zoom and a wooden adjustable stand, a $10 laser projection
microscope and a $50 novel lensless stereo microscope based on the
Raspberry Pi (a microscope with it's own OS that runs Python and OpenCV!!!)
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzNjJ8_zT-A and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm750WtlFN0), parts to build and modify
these microscopes, some example Python image processing code, links to free
imaging tools (e.g. Fiji ImageJ https://fiji.sc/), some hacking materials
(cardboard, hot glue, wood), slimy pond water (full of all kinds of tiny
fascinating creatures), and samples of plankton from
https://www.carolina.com/ Participants are encouraged to bring their own
slimy water and microscopic creatures (no pathogens please, my motto is "if
you can't drink it, don't bring it" ;).
The general goal is for participants to team up and produce something
(physical device, code, art work, movie, sound/music, slide show, etc) to
help make biology accessible to people using microscopes, code media (art,
music, sound, video, image, internet, multimedia), or whatever participants
can think of. We are especially interested in plankton; to raise awareness
of the complexity, beauty, variety and vital role they play in our well
being (they provide 2/3 of our oxygen, are the largest sequester of carbon
from the atmosphere, and the baby food for practically every species of
fish. However, these are suggestions, as hackers will probably have their
own view of what they want to do, which is the point of holding a
Hack-a-Thon, to encourage creativity and experimentation!
FYI I'm a hacker/inventor myself and spend a lot of time going to schools
to turn kids onto STEAM (https://makezine.com/2009/06/

Subject: Studio/Workshop/Office available in West Berkeley Feb 1st
Excellent location in East Bay and part of an awesome collective. Across
the street from OSH Hardware and Berkeley Bowl West, and on the same block
as Discount Fabrics as well as The Shipyard and Urban Ore, as well as easy
no-permit street parking and access from I-80. Safe industrial West
Berkeley neighborhood right on the border with Emeryville and Oakland.
Ashby Bart station 1 mile away.
18' x 15' in a private quiet location on the second floor with lockable
door. Has openable window overlooking Ashby for fresh air and good natural
light on the other side with 3 windows. $490 / month including utilities
(reasonable electrical use, internet, trash). Most of the furnishings
shown are not included and will be removed at end of month.
Ideal uses are art, electronics, office, etc. No heavy fabrication please,
but light is ok. We want to avoid anything creating lots of noise or fumes
so we can maintain our great peaceful environment. Optional access to large
open 2-story area for occasional projects with loading dock and forklift.
We have blazing-fast gigabit internet with symmetrical pipes, so can be a
good choice for big data, such as video production. 24 hour access
permitted, but must respect nighttime quiet. Living in this space definitely
not permitted.
Available for move in on February 1st, month-to-month. Contact me if
you'd like to come see the space. First come first served, it will go fast!

I just purchased two refurbished 20 megapixel Canon PowerShot ELPH 160 and
the archivist lighting assembly which includes LED bulbs, sockets, lenses,
wiring and power adapter.
Jonathon will send us the design files for the sockets mounting plate soon
as I tell him what format we need to cut it at the SUDO room: DXF or SVG or
something else?
~
http://diybookscanner.org/archivist/index6ea9.html?page_id=267
This is the page describing the plate. It would be convenient if the SUDO
room has some FR4 but as long as the material is opaque, heat proof and can
be painted black, should be no problem.
This plate will sit at the top center of the scanner. The plate also serves
to block light from entering from the top direction. Since, we need to
attach something to raise the lights higher than the original hackerspace
design, we should not cut this out yet. It does not need to be the same
shape as the archivist plate as long as the socket mounting holes are the
same.
Jonathon wrote last week:
."..you can move the lights further away from the platen. Because of
various design constraints, Daniel put the lights closer to the platen than
is ideal on that model. For later models (like Daniel's Archivist design),
the lights were been moved further away to reduce glare and hot spots. You
want to reproduce this in some way. So just build a simple frame you can
set on top of the scanner to lift the lights. There is a mathematical way
to find the minimum distance, but it might be easiest just to do it
empirically, pulling the lights away and taking sample photos until you see
that there is no reflected light source."
You can see how this the lights are put together on the archivist about
halfway down this page
