bump! does anyone want to help get one or both vending machines working? This
would be a great way to vend arduinos, ESP8266's, candy bars, and whatever else
we want to sell to sudoers and others. Much of the work has already been done.

Hi all,
I'm a new member. I'm excited to be a part of this community. There are
great people and great resources in the space. I've also noticed that is
kind of disorganized, cluttered, and the organization is broke! As a medium
to long term goal I think it would be great to gain financial solvency and
be able to start saving for larger projects as well as clean up the space
and make it an amazing workspace with lots of working tools, spare parts,
and workspace.
I reviewed the articles of association and noticed a few roles that were
not apparent to me in the meetings I've attended. For me the first goal of
implementing change is identifying the leadership and working with them to
build a consensus.
Is there an existing facilitator, scribe, exchequer, and conflict steward?
Thanks,

Hey there privacy hackers,
The weekly privacy hackathons hosted at Noisebridge via the Cypherpunks
Write Code <https://www.meetup.com/Cypherpunks-Write-Code/> meetup group
are generally 4-10pm, but *tomorrow* (Saturday) it is *7pm to 10pm* (at
Noisebridge).
This is because of RIOTcon <https://riotcon.github.io/>, which I'm speaking
at:
RIOTcon (Radical Interactive Open Technology Conference) is a new

RIOTcon is from 11am till 5pm. My talk is at noon, and I'll be staying for
the entire event before heading to Noisebridge for the CWC hackathon.
More details about RIOTcon, including talk

I hope to see you all at the conference and/or the hackathon!

P.S. *Of course* my talk is about Pursuance <https://pursuanceproject.org/>
!
Following on from the finances discussion during last week's meeting...
On manual review of our Stripe account, I see 36 monthly recurring dues
subscriptions through sudo-humans for a total of $1,290 per month.
There were a handful of accounts with failing transactions. (This tends
to happen when a card expires or a number changes.) However, those
accounts probably add up to <$100 per month altogether.
If we expect, say, $1,200 per month actually paid, and our sole bill is
to Omni, for $2,000, we are running an $800 shortfall. $800 over 30
people is $27 per. $800 over 15 people is $54 per.
I've just updated my plan accordingly.
As I recall, one of the big open questions from the meeting was whether
Sudo pays any other recurring bills. We know we have insurance, and use
utilities. It wasn't clear whether those are billed through Omni, and
covered by the $2,000 per month, or not.

Subject: Plumbing work next Thursday 1/25 - NO WATER
To: discuss <discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org>
Our plumber will be doing repairs in Omni's wheelchair bathroom next
Thursday, January 25th, starting around 10am. We'll probably have to
turn off the water lines to the whole building for at least part of
the time. Thanks for understanding.
Folks, a crony gave me a 6+1 DVD duplicator and a couple of external
firewire DVD-RW burners, plus a laptop cooler pad dealer (see attached
picture).
Maybe we could use the duplicator to burner videos of an event in the
ballroom for quick distribution. I have a few spools of DVD-RWs I could
throw at it. Otherwise this stuff just goes in my e-cycling pile, though
I have to say it does make a pretty cool electronic samurai sculpture in
my living room.

Jonathon Duerig (I believe he took over much from Daniel Reetz) responded
that we have a 'hackerspace' model scanner and offered some advice. I asked
if we could buy the "lighting system" parts of a 'quill' model and if it
would be feasible to mount on our 'hackerspace' model. The logic is well
put here

'ello sudoers,
Omni's annual board meeting is next Thursday (the 18th). Any sudoers
interested in being a delegate and/or officer-in-training?
Robb and I have been interchangeably sudo's delegate for quite some time.
It essentially involves attending delegates meetings (1st & 3rd Thursdays
from 7-9pm) and relaying proposals to and from sudo room via the mailing
list and monthly meeting for consensus decision-making.
Nominating "officers-in-training" was Laura's suggestion. Current officers
are Lynn (president), Brian (treasurer) and myself (secretary). You'd work
with us to learn how to keep Omni running in the day-to-day. I can say from
personal experience that I've learned more over the course of the past
three years than I have in any of my academic degrees and jobs - and the
rewards of successfully hacking bureaucracy are especially sweet ^_^
Brian and I will be sending out a defined list of responsibilities this
weekend.
Additionally, I have invited the Sin Fronteras cafe folks to tomorrow's
meeting-flavored party, but haven't heard back yet. Hoping one or more of
them can make it to answer any remaining questions and we can get to know
each other.
Cheers,
Jenny

Subject: [dorkbotsf-blabber] A Thousand FREE Lithium Batteries For YOU
To: Dorkbot-Blabber <dorkbotsf-blabber(a)googlegroups.com>
Hi all
An energy company donated a hundred thousand barely-used lithium
nanophosphate cells to my nonprofit org.
We need places to store them!
THE CELLS:
These are industrial-grade A123 High Power Lithium Nanophosphate
ANR26650M1A cells. They are authentic, strong and safe.
They are 26650—same height as 18650’s, but fatter.
Photos:
https://image.ibb.co/dfD9XG/steve_freewire_sm.jpghttps://image.ibb.co/ea0Cmb/A123_cells.jpg
Battery specs below.
THE DEAL:
In exchange for storing a few boxes of batteries, we’ll gift you approx
one- to two-thousand cells, free.
You could build some power walls, power a bunch of bicycles and portable
LED projects, etc.
We need to move the cells within a week.
Each box is approx 4’ x 2’ x 2’.
If we deliver to you, plz store 9 boxes minimum (we’ll have to rent a
truck).
If you pickup, then fewer boxes is fine.
Gift to you will be approx 1/10th of the cells you store.
WHY YOU SHOULD HELP US J
I founded a nonprofit org, to teach electronics to at-risk teens in SF. We

Safety spec: https://fmo.unl.edu/sds/lithiumionbattery.pdf
2.3Ah, 3.3V nominal each
Performance: 30C continuous discharge, 60C pulse
Recommended Charge: 3A to 3.6V CCCV, 45 min
Fast Charge: 10A to 3.6V CCCV, 15 min
Power: Over 3000W/kg and 5800W/L
Form factor: The cells are assembled in battery packs. Each pack contains
100 cells. These packs were used in an installation with strict
constraints, so they had to pull these packs from service at 75%-80%
capacity. In reality, most of the cells in each pack are in great
condition. You’ll want to break down the packs and pull the individual
cells.

IT was fantastic! meeting the SUDO room last Tuesday. I hope this is not
too much detail
*** Please tell me how... the best way for me to get in there Monday to be
able to look over the sizes of the parts etc mostly bolts I will need to
complete the base hopefully Monday. Any suggestions on hardware mounting
cameras? We might need to mount/un-mount/align cameras for each session.
The original mounting brackets were replaced(at some point) with blocks of
wood with holes to accommodate various sizes and positions of cameras.
(Does the below or some version of it need a wiki page?)
1-2-18, The Sudo room collective et al with Dany from Noisebridge and
Jacques assembled SUDO's book scanner "base." See at diybookscanner.org
"Book Scanner Rigs" a basic diagram and list of hardware (w/out lights &
cams) - with lights & cams, could be called a "rig." I think the
distinction is important introducing people to the concept:
The base is essential for an operator to mount cameras (connected to a
computer), as she flips the pages of a book, running the "capture" software
because, the hundreds of images captured comprising the pages of a book
should be aligned (as much as possible) similarly in 3 dimensions - so that
"post-processing" software can determine what and where everything is to
automatically align, process, OCR etc and then create a digital book.
"After capture, you will have a folder full of images. Turning those images
into an eBook is called 'post-processing'. What steps this actually entails
depends on your needs. Some people want to compress things down as much as
possible and extract the text of the book using OCR. Others just want to
crop each image to the page and bind them into a PDF."
diybookscanner.org/en/intro.html
These two links provide images and discussion of this particular scanner.
Someone dubbed the model: Reese 1.0
https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Bookscannerhttps://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Digital_Archivists
(This diybookscanner.org/archivist is the "Reese 2.0" model named and sold
as "The Archivist". Very similar to the 1.0 probably.)
HERE IS WHAT I THINK IS NEEDED TO GET TO CAPTURING BOOKS AND MAKING THE
BOOK SCANNER USABLE:
1. CLIPS TO LOCK DOWN TOP HALF TO BOTTOM
If you watch "BETA DIY Book Scanner Kit Demo and Walkthrough" (the Reese
1.0?)
https://youtu.be/a4-qMc2QSOw
:54 seconds in "A third thing..." he explains why the design looks the way
that it does - to allow for flipping the top half of the scanner to use a
different scanning technique for small mass market type paperbacks which
are bound tight - with tiny inner margins - which make them hard to scan on
most kinds of scanners. Dany and I put a couple of screws in to make sure
no one started flipping th the top because the glass platens are not
clipped down very tight.
2. BASE
handle
bolt w/knob for attaching/adjusting 1 camera base
bungee chords
some other bits I will figure out Monday
power strip bolted down with 6-7 recepticles
3. LIGHTING
To get pages brightly and evenly lit requires a particular kind of light
and other lighting etc to be blacked out. There should be a simple solution
for the lamp needed. I will post the question to the forum this week. I
can't get into reading through and examining all this:
https://forum.diybookscanner.org/viewforum.php?f=16
My initial thought on blackout is curtains and curtain rods are unwiely and
I want to try making a simple heavy duty cardboard box spray painted flat
black on the inside
3. CAMERAS
Resolution needed is one issue. Control is another. Storage/security and
availability are another.
Jake said "I can donate two identical Canon digital cameras to this
project."
"The current camera recommendation is Canon PowerShot ELPH 160. These are
20MP cameras which work with Pi Scan
<http://github.com/Tenrec-Builders/pi-scan> and are still being
manufactured."
http://www.diybookscanner.org/en/intro.html
4. COMPUTER / SOFTWARE
My thought at the moment is since different people have different goals
requiring different software, I want to have mine loaded on my own macbook
but am also interested in setting up a public computer for this.
5. SECURITY & STORAGE
?

Hey sudoers!
LOLspace, otherwise known as Liberating Ourselves Locally
<https://oaklandmakerspace.wordpress.com/>, a POC-led makerspace in East
Oakland that started around the same time as sudo and is now a project of
the hella rad Peacock Rebellion <http://www.peacockrebellion.org>, recently
purchased their building in Fruitvale
<https://www.youcaring.com/thetenantsandthecommunity-773671> in tandem with
EastSide Arts Alliance, Sustaining Ourselves Locally (SOL, a QTPOC-led food
justice collective & garden), Cycles of Change bike shop worker coop,
and Shaolin
Life, a community temple and martial arts studio - as well as several
residential spaces on the second floor. This is a huge win and I'm so
stoked!!
They're having a celebration on the afternoon of January 28th, and I
thought it'd be rad if we could bring a gift on behalf of sudoroom :)
Some ideas I was considering:
* a sign or card drawn by the robot arm - and if card, signed by sudoers ^_^
* donating one of our sewing machines (they seem to be much more crafty
than sudo)
* donating a bunch of those phablets we got? or were they eee pcs?
* some sweet outdoor lighting rig to make the sidewalk space more inviting
and safe?
Also:
* a rooftop mesh node install! they're about a block from the houseless
encampment that the City gave to The Village to build their first village
of 2018 on. [this will happen, if they're down, regardless of a sudoroom
gift]
Anyone interested in collaborating on this?
Other ideas, inspiration, do-ocratic gift-making welcome and encouraged :)

Machine found stashed in a baffling spot inside the building, but found.
I'm generally of a 'the fewer locked doors added to the world the better'
mentality, but I'm digging the idea of the door. It would actually let us
be more open in the front more often as well without having to worry as
much about CCL and Sudo security, which would be good too.

i am out of town for tonight's edition of Hardware Hacking Tuesday!
who will host in my place? you just have to welcome new people to the space,
help them find places to sit or hack, and try to help them with their projects,
etc..
Hi all,
Has anyone seen a black North Face jacket? I forgot it at the weekly
meeting some time ago. Sierk said he saw it, but it wasn't at the last seen
location anymore. It's my warmest jacket, and I sort of miss it with the
current weather :-)

lockable should not be a problem. If noisebridge is donating one of the
older designs, it would be framed with raw wood we can just screw some
hinges and plywood in - to box it - to keep people from fiddling with the
mechanisms. The cameras might need a more secure spot at the omni.
Marc, Robb, Jake,
I am looking forward to meeting and working with you. I am new to this
list, the omni commons and the sudo room so please keep me straight on that.
I am back in town Jan. 1 --- Tues Jan. 2 would be a good day for me to meet
and begin - and maybe complete a plan and proposal if needed for the omni
collectives. I have a van if there is a base-kit already constructed at
noisebridge that needs to be picked up.

I would like to talk with any folks who can collaborate or help
establishing a book scanner in Oakland. I am talking about a complete
system, finished, effective and quick. I myself need to be able to scan
quantities of books several times a month easily. I cannot afford the total

There are many DIY project designs out there and software great to tinker
with. But, what I am interested in is quickly completing setting up a fast
stable system(or getting one donated or purchased) - and working with the
projects and issues that begin at that point: starting with scanning lots
of books. I have a huge number of books I need to scan for personal and
political projects which have broader applications.
I would prefer working on a system that could serve many people and needs -
and I would be interested in being part of a collective working on getting
books scanned and converted to accessible formats (particularly
http://daisy.org) - but also interested in working on making the system
available to more people and the whole thing accessible for the disabled. I
am also interested in discussing working on the further extensions of
accommodating reading disabilities, books and computer access for the
blind.
I volunteer at Revolution Books to fight the power and transform the people
for revolution. I have a good basis in literature of art, politics,
history, science and international fiction needing to be read and made
available. I have a reading disability. I have taught TV production and
media in public schools. I live in Oakland.

Hey sudoers ~
If anyone has the spoons, sudo room should apply for some funding from
http://pineapplefund.org/
I'm on vacation with family, already wrote one for Omni and People's Open
and trying to launch the kitchen campaign <https://omnicommons.org/kitchen>,
or I'd do it myself. It's really simple - just a one line description of
the project and a paragraph on how we'd spend the $$$.
Obviously, I think we should ask for ~$10-100K to build out a second level
to the space, upgrade our equipment and supplies, and maybe funds for hard
drives and screens and such so we can fix up broken laptops and distribute
them to our many neighbors in need.
There, I just basically wrote it for ya ;) just needs some polish! and I'm
sure any one of you inventive souls have great ideas on what we could do
with a lil BTC :)
Also, I think we should launch a crowdfunding campaign next year, perhaps
using BitGive's newly-released GiveTrack <https://www.givetrack.org/>
platform. Sudo's never run a fundraising campaign in all of our 6 years of
existence, and the time is ripe to finally do so and build upwards!

Hello all,
I won't be at/hosting js night tonight because it is the holidays and I'm
guessing not many people will be there. Just a heads up. For anyone who is
thinking of going without door access, there will usually be someone around
to let you in, but I can't guarantee it.

Subject: [dorkbotsf-blabber] Gift economy: Firmament LEDs
To: Dorkbot-Blabber <dorkbotsf-blabber(a)googlegroups.com>
Hi,
So last spring/summer I had to replace all of Firmament's LED modules. Now
I have 20,000 or so modules to give away. Most of them work, but I can't
guarantee which ones will and for how long, since they were all treated
badly by the Houston rains.
Each bag contains 435 or 465 modules in strings. The strings are attached
to the bird netting that made up Firmament's old canopy. There are JST
connectors at both ends of most of the strings, and power taps at the end of
every string. All wiring is 18ga.
Each module contains a WS2801 chip and 3 5050 RGB LEDs. They run on 12VDC.
You'll need a PixelPusher or other LED controller to make them do anything.
First come, first served!
Christopher

Greetings omninoms!
For those not yet aware, Omni intends to launch a crowdfunding campaign on
Sunday to raise funds toward renovating the commercial kitchen in the
basement!
*if you get the gist, you can proceed directly to the kitchen wiki page
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Kitchen> and/or peruse the CAMPAIGN ACTION
KIT
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YRIoL5jlmgxZMBdLQibWNn39gD7wSLx-EgCBbdM…>*
We need *ALL HANDS ON DECK *to help spread the word. In particular:
- reach out directly to folks in your networks who you think would
donate, and ask them if they could contribute when the campaign launches.
pre-pledges help ensure successful campaigns. here's some sample text
you can use <https://peoplesopen.net/pad/p/kitchen-pre-ask> (tx be to
julian!)
- do you have any press contacts you could tap? we are drafting a press
release
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T3xUefmfxntMbin02Nf--R4BsQslth2SZ7Vl7NA…>
to be published on Monday after our soft 'community launch' and have zilch
lined up so far
- can you or your group offer (and follow through on) a perk/reward for
certain donation levels? get in touch!
- when we launch on sunday, help spread the word by sharing, retweeting,
and sending to any and all relevant mailing lists!
- do you have a spare hour or two to help with social media, press
outreach, door-to-door flyering, graphic design (eg, a facebook cover image
people could use?), making a short video or blog post, organizing an event,
etc? join the kitchen working group mailing list
<https://omnicommons.org/lists/listinfo/kitchen> and/or attend the next
meeting - Wednesdays at 6pm in the Basement Library!
Check out the wiki page at omnicommons.org/kitchen for more info on the
project, including the awesome campaign video
<https://omnicommons.org/omnikitchen.mp4> produced largely by the
ever-rad-Anka (and starring some of the most OG Food Not Bombs organizers!).
-- more info:---
Given the holiday season, the extensive burdens on every activist's energy
these days, and a host of other complexities and circumstances, we've
decided to break up the campaign into 3 phases.
For this first phase, our goal is to raise $15,000 - which will enable us
to pull the permits, demo the walls for expansion of the area, and get most
if not all of our plumbing work done.
The subsequent two phases will have goals of $20K each - though by the end
of this first campaign we hope to have a solid lead or two on a significant
grant or donor.
There are many dangling threads and the kitchen crew could definitely use
more support to carry this off. Please do lend a hand, however which way
you can!

Hi everyone,
Here is the updated cafe proposal. Some things have been modified based
upon the feedback received so far, most of which has been positive.
If you have any feedback from your collectives, friendly amendments,
questions, etc. it would be really helpful to have them before the meeting
on Thursday.
This will be the 3rd meeting at which the Cafe has been discussed, and the
second since the proposal was submitted. Collectives all should have
discussed it, and I hope we can consense on some version of it on Thursday
so we can sign a lease beginning January 1st. If you are going to be the
delegate on Thursday, please come prepared with your collective's response.

*Updated proposal to build and open a coffee bar, Cooperative Cafe Sin
Fronteras, at Omni Commons*
* Dear Omni Commons, Sin Fronteras Coffee is a worker-owned co-op created
by Rocio Cervantes, and Jose Rodriguez from Akat Cafe
<http://akatcafekalli.com>, a community space and sustainable cafe, and
Michelle Gutierrez and Abad Leyva. Michelle is a therapist/photographer
working for people of color in East Oakland. Abad is an independent
filmmaker and founder of Encinal Oakland, a community organization fighting
stigma and discrimination through multimedia projects. We propose to become
an Omni Commons member collective and open a coffee/limited food location
which will serve the North Oakland community and Omni Commons. Sin
Fronteras Coffee will offer fair trade Zapatista coffee from Chiapas, and
work directly with the farmers. We also see the need in our communities,
where people struggle balancing a busy and poor life, for the cafe to be a
model of dignified work at a living wage. Once established, Sin Fronteras
Coffee will give to members of disenfranchised communities the opportunity
to learn to run a sustainable, autonomous cooperative business. Our
commitment to horizontal growth means that we will support and promote
others to open similar small, worker-owned co-ops. Our proposal for Omni
Commons: 1. Collective Structure. Worker owned co-op, new owners by
invitation only. 1. Community Benefit. Cultural and political education and
social events; support for events at the Omni with Cafe service; once we
are established, youth internships. In the future, financial and business
training to co-op members and employees. 1. Schedule. Proposed hours of
operation (subject to change) 7:30am-5:30pm Mon-Fri and cafe service for
events at Omni collectives with anticipation. We will establish a system
to request cafe service during events. 1. Security. Conversation needed re.
protection of equipment and safety after cafe hours. We will position
equipment with safety in mind. We will consider increased security and
protection of equipment, if needed, in a way that decoratively and
artistically contributes to the space. 1. Source of Goods. We aim to
serve organic and just trade coffee from Zapatista cooperatives in Chiapas,
Mexico. All produce, pastries and dairy will be sourced through local
suppliers 1. Community Market. Opportunities for Omni Commons collectives
and other POC, Women Owned, Queer Owned businesses to showcase their
products. 1. Lease details. 1. Parties: The
Omni Commons (“Lessor”)
Sin Fronteras
Coffee (“Lessee”) 2. Premises: Omni Commons
3. Term:
2 years with 2 2-year options to renew.
4. Commencement: January 1, 2018 5. Use:
Coffee/Limited Food 6. Base Rent: $800 a
month plus approximately $250 utilities (garbage, PG&E, internet, water
based on what other collectives pay). This rate gives 24/7 access to the
building for cafe operations; and the ability to hold events in the
Entrance Hall at the time the lease is signed. Free use of the Ballroom for
occasional large events will be available at the end of the rental
abatement period (see below). Lessee will pay property taxes levied on the
Lessor by Alameda County due to its non-charitable status. Rent will
increase by 3% annually. 7. Insurance: Lessee shall obtain general
commercial liability insurance with liability limits not less than
$1,000,000/$2,000,000 aggregate, a Waiver of Subrogation, and naming
Lessor (Omni Commons) as an additionally insured. 8. Start-up Costs &
Build Out: We estimate the build-out and improvement costs at approx
$8,000. Omni Commons will abate our monthly rent for 6 months to help Sin
Fronteras manage this initial investment. Sin Fronteras will begin paying
for utilities from the time of lease signing. 9. Improvements: Lessee
shall provide the following improvements, using building standard finishes,
subject to a mutually acceptable space plan, and all applicable permits: -
Coffee Bar - Plumbing and Electrical upgrades - Appropriate tile and
floor finishing - Painting 10. Storage: Extra storage will be included,
approximately 10 sq ft in basement . 11. Parking: Only street parking.
13. Security Deposit:
Upon lease execution, Lessee shall provide Lessor with a security deposit
equivalent to the last month’s rent. 14. Financials: Lessee will be
responsible for funding of leasehold improvements. Some useful links: Akat

need a 12v battery for the front door access system and computer. a
car-battery sized one would be nice and will help to be enough for the
motorized door opener that we should add already.

props to Bill for a most excellent rundown of the implications of the net
neutrality repeal and community mesh networks as a promising radical

Hi Sudoers, please review this proposal to turn the entrance hall into
a cafe. These are the same folks who run Akat Cafe in Eastlake - I
strongly encourage folks to go check it out, as you'll get a good idea
of what to expect. I think this will be very good for us.

Delegates,
Here is the proposal for the cafe in the entrance hall made by the
folks who attended the delegates meeting about a month ago. Please
read it, share it with your collective members, and discuss it at your
meetings. At the delegates meeting tonight we agree that it would be a
good idea for Jose, Abad, Michelle, and Rocio to attend collective
meetings to introduce themselves and answer questions. If you would
like to invite them to your collective meeting, please let me know.
Thanks

Next week I plan on switching Omni's network to a new router. Like I
said I would do ages ago. It should hopefully go quickly, but just in
case, please plan on the internet being broken for a bit. Thanks!
