Hey all,
I'm also going to compile these into a 'best practices' guide to post to
the wiki and around the space. Please add to this thread if I've missed
anything:
*Products:*
In the interest of becoming a more accessible space for those with chemical
sensitivities, I've been slowly ordering unscented cleaning products in
bulk:
* There's a big jug of Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds, an unscented general purpose
cleaner that can be diluted for use in mopping floors, cleaning toilet
bowls, and wiping down surfaces.
* There are two gallon jugs of unscented liquid hand soap for the bathrooms
- use 4 parts water to every part soap. I've ordered 4 wall-mountable foam
pump dispensers for the bathrooms, but they won't arrive for a few weeks.
* Please do not use bleach or other harsh chemicals in the common areas,
though if you must (eg; cleaning up rodent droppings), ventilate the area
as best you can afterwards.
*Supplies Storage:*
* You should know by now that most of our bulk cleaning and paper supplies,
such as trash bags, trifold paper towels and toilet paper, can be found in
the cleaning closet at the top of the wheelchair lift across from the Kids
Room. If you notice supplies are running low, please send a ping to
finance@omnicommons!
* Some basic supplies, such as trash bags, a broom, some cleaning products,
can also be found in the closet located between the refrigerator and the
upstairs Disco Room bathroom.
* Disco Room bathroom has a stock of TP, hand soap, and paper towels in the
cabinets.
* Mop buckets and mops live upstairs in the washout room near the DR
bathroom. There are usually one or two in the sudo/CCL bathroom as well.
* There is a rodent abatement crate in the secure tool storage closet -
though I have not seen the mister around lately. More on pest control and
cleaning protocol at https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Pest_control
*Trash & Recycling:*
* We recently switched to CiviCorps <http://www.civicorpsrecycling.org> for
recycling service, a local nonprofit that has a training program for
low-income youth. Pickup is Thursday mornings, so if sudoers around on
Wednesdays could help with pulling the blue bins to the curb, that would be
rad.
* *CiviCorps offers free e-waste removal!! *Don't just put e-waste on the
curb, however - the pickup needs to be requested and an inventory form
filled out:
http://www.civicorpsrecycling.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Civicorps-Recy…
(i'll print out a bunch of these and put them in the sudo's 'front desk'
area).
* Garbage and compost still go out on Friday mornings. Garbage is regularly
in a state of overflow - so if you help or host any large events please
remember that all large events are responsible for taking their trash out
at the end of the event.
*To Dos:*
* Install paper towel dispenser in sudo/CCL bathroom (there are several
located in the secure storage closet)
* Replace flushing valve in sudo/CCL bathroom
* Install hand soap dispensers once they arrive
* Could stand to do another round of rodent abatement - finding and
covering holes; deep cleaning of basement, trash room, and sudo; setting
more traps; and *shudder* dealing with the crawl spaces/vents.
Yours in the mundane yet necessary,
Jenny

this Tuesday afternoon I was disappointed to discover that the internet was not
working at Omni.
I found that the DSL modem we rent from LMI had no link to the outside world,
and that neither of the two phone lines it's supposed to connect to are active.
I called LMI and started a trouble ticket, and scheduled a visit by AT&T who is
responsible for our phone lines arriving at the building. After getting off
the phone (right before LMI closed for the day) i plugged a phone directly into
the entry point box in the corner of the Phat Beats room and confirmed that the
problem is NOT inside our building.
The phone lines coming into our building cross the street to the construction
zone across 48th street, so I assume they cut our lines. Hopefully AT&T will
come fix it tomorrow. The LMI ticket number for this incidnt is 78496
They have my phone number, and if they arrive and have trouble getting in the
front door or into the room with the phone boxes I can buzz them in and tell
them the lock combo. Hopefully they will come tomorrow afternoon.
Separately, i noticed that our DSL modem was only connected to one of the two
phone lines, which would have halved our bandwidth. We should fix that by
finding a four-conductor phone cable with RJ13 ends, and using it to connect
the modem to the jack on the wall in the server area.

my friend left his Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon laptop at sudoroom last tuesday (1

if you need a detailed description of it let me know.

Hey all,
Laura reminded me that next Sunday is Mother's Day. which doesn't seem a
good date to have a work/painting party.
That said let's push everything, but the book removal over one week:
Book deadline still Mon May 15
Front hall cleaning & painting: Sun May 21
Omni Pay What You Can Sale: Sun May 28 (if the ballroom is still open that
day)
Dump run: Tues May 30
Hello Omni,
The Welcoming Working Group is slowly getting more organized, sorry it’s
taking so long, if you would like to sign-up for a door shift you can add
your name to our online shift tracker…
https://www.omnicommons.org/frontdesk
Even if someone has already signed up on a shift you want go ahead and sign
up for the same time as well. That’s actually a good thing, because then
someone can stay watching the door while someone else can give tours.
We will also be compiling a door shift training manual very soon that goes
over Omni rules that must be followed and how to greet/interact with
visitors.
We are going to be painting and beautifying the front entryway next Sunday
May 14.
Painting, which will encompass the walls and ceiling, will begin at 5pm.
Before painting though some prep work needs to get done, including patching
some holes in the walls, replacing ceiling tiles and consolidating &
organizing wires, this will happen Saturday night & Sunday
morning/afternoon.
Contact me if you would like to paint, patch, glue or whatever else in this
endeavor.
There’s a lot of work to get the whole main hall beautified and part of
that is we are shifting, moving, donating books that were a part of the
former library.
That said, if there are any books you would like to keep for yourself GET
THEM NOW, they will be donated and gone by Monday May 15.
The Omni Pay What You Can Sale is going down Sunday May 21 all afternoon in
the ballroom.
I am personally motivated to clear out the basement again, but this is an
opportune time for any group or area of Omni to get cleaned out.
If there is something your collective wants to get rid of please get it
ready for the move to the ballroom.
We’re asking that you keep that stuff in your area until the day of the
sale, DO NOT move it to the main hall or basement. If you absolutely need
the space in your area before May 21 you may move it to the basement ONLY
if you are giving your word of honor that you personally will carry it up
from the basement to the ballroom on the day of the event.
Stuff that does not make its way out via the sale will be hauled away to
the dump Tuesday May 23. Hopefully the sale will have generated enough cash
to pay for the dump runs.
Come to the Welcoming Working Group meetings Mondays @ 5pm or contact me
personally if you have any questions or want to help,
Marcus
Did anyone see an Amazon package for CCL that was supposedly delivered
Sunday morning? 12"x10", but relatively light. Please let me know - it has
some more rodent abatement materials that I was hoping to try out for the
Phat Beets room.
Also, did the mail cubbyholes get moved to a different location? They are
no longer behind the front desk area.
If anyone is willing to take the lead on getting us a larger and more
secure mailbox with one or more package drops, that would be greatly
appreciated! I think CCL can contribute a few hundred, but I'm not
personally able to coordinate this right now.
Thanks!

Subject: [sudo-info] Mediation Letter: Robert Albert Young Chu
To: <info(a)sudoroom.org>
Cc:
Dear Sudo Room Community & The Omni Commons at Large,
Approximately two years ago, I was asked to leave the Omni Commons for a
month, and to only come back if I have a person who would sponsor(chaperon)
my presence. My attempt to return has been self-prolonged so that I can
focus on other major aspects of my life. I attended the April Sudo Room
meeting to discuss my mediation and return more in depth, explained I do
not want to do the sponsor item upon my return because I feel it would be
healthier to come back when thorough mediation has occurred with the
elements of clear communication, assurance, certainty, and expectations.
At that very positive and supportive meeting, we were able to go over a bit
about how my behavior was negative, destructive, and hazardous to the
community. I also was able to express lightly some of the reasons for my
inconvenient actions, which particularly were based on my narrow-sided and
hyper-focused, mindset at the time. I then asked the people in attendance,
for guidance to continue forth with my mediation. The optimal response I
received was to write a letter to the Sudo Room community with some
specifics that should be included, then come to the meeting after to
discuss.
At that time in my life two-three years ago, I was not really in a stable
situation, and was spending an excessive and unhealthy amount of time at
the Omni Commons. Not to mention was the cause of me being banned from
another Hackerspace. It was through my own idiosyncrasy, which caused my
narrow-sided hyper-focused mindset; encompassed by the semi-obsessive
desire to get projects completed. At the time I was unable to realize these
bugs in my personality and how my actions affected the people around me,
nor the negative impacts they have attributed too.
In the meeting, I also discussed some of the my life changes over the past
two years-positively exonerating some of my previous destructive
personality traits. Which instilled a calmer, thoughtful, open mind, to my
current presence. Some changes I merit are: first ever family road trip
with my sister (whom we were split up with since we were kids), brother in
law, and immediate family, to Mexico for the holidays, renting a car for
the first time, going on a solo road trip for the first time, changing my
diet, quitting alcohol and caffeine, working out, and setting obtainable
goals for myself.
It was through my patience that I decided not to immediately pursue
mediation because it would have been very similar (history would have
repeated), but rather minimize that to work on other areas of my life.
While I was away, I obtained solid housing, started receiving disability
(for an assault & 2²" hole left in my skull), medical/dental, working
out/fasting, bought a car, taking classes, traveling, got a gym membership,
and finally was able to have the tranquility to sit down and write this
letter. I have also personally grown from the previous two years.
Being able to return to Sudo Room and the Omni Commons is paramount to me
for the aspects of learning, community, place to complete projects, like
mindedness, relationship building (and yes repairing), and also because of
the good nature it has at large. As stated earlier, Mediation, Assurance,
Certainty, Expectations, and Communication, being achieved (especially with
the people that were impacted negatively) are my own standards for
returning. In addition, after my potential return, I infer that my past
destructive patterns of my behavior, will not be a problem because of the
positive personal changes. Some are: a lot more centered, better at
listening to others advice, and have a clearer understanding of my own
present day actions and their impacts.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter,
as we continue to work on our mediation together.
-Due to the length please before the next meeting or
or make time for review during the meeting (June 12th).

After changes made on Tuesday the wifi has been super flaky. DNS lookups
start failing after a certain period, disconnecting/reconnecting wont fix
but switching APs might. But it will happen again on that one. So far I've
seen similar symtons on sudomesh, peoples and Omni Commons
*Hello All, *
Today (Saturday) thanks to Marc, Rob, and yours truly the server "cage"
area got some Love. : )
It still needs more love, but with a vacuum and a brush to get the dust out
under the four post rack, and production gear itself.
And not to mention all the wiring that will need to be redone (but this for
part the future).
*AN IDEA IN PROGRESS: *
Migrate all gear and patch panels into the four post rack, so we gain more
space by removing the two posts rack.
*MOVING THINGS IN AND OUT:*
* The three old red servers that were not in used were removed.
* The server that Marc had configure (I forgot what is what the told me he
had configured) got install in the four post rack.
* The 2 HP switches got moved to the 2 post rack to the 4post rack.
* There is old stuff and things we are not going to use. I feel we should
check with Marcus and see if we can add these items to the "pay what you
can" sale event. Rob suggested to have a list and announce the items for
that sale, and also suggested that we put some of that stuff in eBay.
*NEW (USED) GEAR THINGS RUNNING:*
* The 24 and 38 HP switches are running along w the Ruckus wireless
controller, and one of Ruckus Access Points.
* This AP was temporarily set on top of one of the servers and pointing to
the Sudoroom tables, pushing the "Omni Commons" SSID. :)
*COMING TO OMNI EARLY IN THE MORNING:*
I am considering to come to omni about 6:30am (after taking my better half
to work).
*PLAN FOR SUNDAY EARLY MORNING PLAN:*
Since I am going to the there early, and Marc already gave me the Gateway
Server interfaces (LANs) overview, I feel that it would be a good time to
swap their cables to connect to the HP switches, and these to feed the Dell
Switches instead. By doing this I don't perceive anything going south.
*WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?:*
Marc and I talked about it, and we agreed that doing this will allow us to
have a nicer and controlled migration, so we don't have to do that all at
once. This is trivial, now that I know what LANs is each interface at the
Linux server level.
*BTW:*
We started about 11AM something, and ended about 7:40PM. It was a whole day
thing.
Thank you, and please let me know if you have any questions. I will check
email before starting anything tomorrow.

Hi!
They are selling the whole store. They have all sorts of equipment and
electric parts very cheap. 70% or 80% discounts. Random parts. They even
sell shelves themselves. Probably worth checking out.

Hello all,
I've recently signed up and have been following the discussion for SUDO room. I'm planning out my first VR gaming computer and would love to pick some brains and talk components and build process. I'm looking to learn how to create in Tilt Brush and develop Quantum Science visual educational environments.
Will there be anyone there tonight who might be interested in this topic?
Thanks

Anyone available to lend me a hand picking up a fridge this afternoon? Let
me know asap at (925) 989 3869.
Pickup is in South SF, so we will likely be gone for an hour and a half or
so. Just need someone to help lift it on the truck.
If anyone has a truck available, that would be a huge help as well.
Otherwise, I plan to rent a UHaul...
Thanks!

Do we have any super low voltage (like 1.2V or lower) LEDs around?
Need them for a project and don’t have time to order them.
Thanks.

Hello Folks,
I have to get going, but if anyone needs more info about this issue,
please, let me know.
This donated switch (see subject) will be replaced, it is my bad.
I should have checked the logs after factory reset it, and before
configuring and putting it into production.
Ports 9,10,11,12 are reporting: "PD Other Fault indication"
For now, since the PoE feature its not being used on this switch, I turned
it off in all ports (1-24).
Thanks!

Hello Everyone,
There is an opportunity to have a radio interview with KPPFB 89.2FM (from

I was asked if there is one or two of us interested for a 15 minutes radio

I was told that the interview is about what Sudoorom is, and learn thoughts
about Net Neutrality. Well, something like that.
If you are interested please let me know your name(s) and contact

Great meeting last night! It warmed my heart and I love the idea of students coming to Sudoroom and working on projects as well as pitching in and helping clean the space 🚀 (it'll also teach them about equipment : kill two birds with one stone )
Hanging out at Sudoroom and becoming dues paying members is also a great way to get jobs i think. A google recruiter kept calling me because they liked my work at Sudoroom
Education is so important for our future and students should join, work on open source pay dues and educate their education
Oh yes here's a picture. Doesn't it look educational ?

Took another crack at trying to drill through holes with the mini CNC.
Short story, still doesn't work but I figured out why the origin/home is so
far away, at least when using KiCAD.
Notes: https://gitlab.com/snippets/1661557
I would be nice to upgrade the CNC to use a Smoothie Board, doing away with
the need to use Real-Time Linux, not sure if the owner would be keen, but
at $45 I feel it would be a worthy investment.
If you haven't logged in and checked your membership dues subscription
lately, your payments may not be working!
I just logged in and realized my membership subscription was not
working, so I just signed myself back up. Thinking about it now, it
might have been because of recently getting a new card number from my
credit union...
If anything like that has happened to you lately, be sure to double
check you're supporting sudo room and contributing what you can to
keep our community space open.
Your contributions primarily contribute to paying off a private
mortgage--so since we are partial owners of the Omni Commons, your
money is a well spent investment!!!
Cheers,
Matt
Is anyone willing to fix our donation button? It would be amazingly helpful if someone could do so. Unfortunately I can't program or I would do it.

this has happened in the past and a couple of times this week, i think, that
the computer that handles the front door magnetic stripe reader shuts itself
off for some reason.
it's a beaglebone black and there is no reason it should shut off. there are
no logs as to why because we generally run it in read-only mode on the main
disk, and logs are kept on a RAM disk.
here's someone else talking about the same issue:
http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php?topic=5547.0
when it's off, it has power but there are no lights on. pressing the power
button turns it on. wtf?
i could make a watchdog circuit that power-cycles it if this happens, but i
don't think that's really the right solution. does someone want to take this
on and figure out wtf is going on?
probably using a USB stick for system logs would be a good start, and maybe
some increased level of logging.

The benches are 3’ x 6’ and about 3’ tall.
They are from a small company in Concord.
I think there are 5 or 6 available.
Huge thanks for everyone who stepped up to speak last night!
We had 4 signed up, then another 4 volunteered.
Thanks to Robb to helping with A/V as usual, cannot do it without you.
We need a host for next month as both myself and Marc are unavailable. I
can help out up until the event but won't be available after May 1st.
Thanks to everyone who came out!
Heya omninoms,
I'm really sorry to make this yet another semi-distressed plea to all in
the commons, but it's the kind of issue that warrants widespread
dissemination:
There is an extension cord above the wooden chest next to the cafe counter
along Shattuck in the entrance hall close to the main entrance. This cord
runs the door server, which is critical to 100+ members' access to the
building. It has been messed with twice this week, both times resulting in
rather disruptive access issues for many.
On Monday, the orange extension cord running there was suddenly and
mysteriously replaced by a white extension cord (and disconnected from said
cord). Today, that extension cord was replaced by some shitty power strip
with no extension cord enabling the strip to even stay in the outlet (so it
fell out and all non-physical key access was unavailable). This extension
cord also runs the wireless access point providing internets to the front
of the building. It is not swap-out-able.
For those in the building when this issue arises, the correct measures are:
* Check that the ethernet and power are connected.
* After all is plugged back in, test your card to see if the door computer
is up
* If your card doesn't work after several swipes (namely noticeable by the
lack of a 'happy' or 'error' sound and lack of a red or green light), then
you need to power cycle the door computer.
* The door computer is a BeagleBone Black that lives in the metal box
enclosure to the upper right of the door. There's a PeoplesOpen.net sticker
on it, I believe. Most people will need to stand on a chair to get it open.
* When you look in the cabinet and observe that the beaglebone black
(basically a ~3x5" circuitboard to the far left of the cabinet) has no
blinky lights, the solution is to unplug both USB plugs from the white
cylinder by the 12v battery, and then plug them back in.
** There is a sweet diagram visualizing this that Lesley drew and which we
taped to the inside of the enclosure last night.
Of note - clearly, the door computer should be connected to power securely
through conduit, and connected to a much better wireless access point than
the crappy DLink router that is the current ethernet connection. The Sudo
Mesh crew is working on this sometime over the next two weeks. PM me if you
have some skills in this area and would be down to help!

Thanks for streaming tonight's 5MoF! :-) In listening to it so far, those
deep-voiced aliens depart from Planet SudoRoom for good starting at 2:43
and the volume-level gets a distinct boost at about 15:47 into the
playback. Haven't yet listened to the rest of this, but am sure it'll be
great.

Hello all,
So, it has come to my attention that this round of SFNode is going to be in
the East Bay for the first time--and looks like it is going to be rather
interesting <https://www.meetup.com/sfnode/events/231483341/>. Numeric
computing with JS! And another talk on stop motion animation in electron by
some guy named Morgan Allen...
It's at 6:30 PM at 5980 Horton Street, Emeryville, CA, this coming
Thursday. I'm planning to be there, so the regularly scheduled JS night at
sudo will resume next week.

i think this might help with the extention cord situation, since we can install
outlets in the table legs and power the table from a drop-cord from the ceiling
(yes that is allowed, can you believe it)

I'm not able to promote and help host the 5MoF this coming week nor the
next one in June due to work/travel.
Unless someone else pops out of the woodwork, 5MoF is taking a hiatus.
What needs to be done:
* Promote the event in advance to ensure people show up
* Get people to sign up to present interesting things
* Show up at least two to three hours before the event and help set up the
audio/video/lighting
Robb has helped with the physical setup and teardown for the past two
events, especially audio and lighting, so perhaps he'd still be up for
helping?
I'm happy to explain everything involved in setting up and live-streaming.
If no-one takes this on then 5MoF will take a two month hiatus.

My work is tossing about 18 of these Radwin 2000 radios. Does the mesh
project want them? If so I could ask.

Hello Folks,
Just you are on the know.
My friend Mike Wilson (not a Sudoer, but kindly building us the gate at the
server area) has planed to come this Friday to do the wire fencing.
Thanks, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Hey Makers, Hackers, Developers and Educators of Sudo Room,
My name is Rick Abruzzo and I'm the co-producer of FIGMENT Oakland. As I understand it, there won't be a 5 minutes of fame this coming month so, I reaching out personally to Sudo room Discuss List to invite all of you to bring art, projects, demo and installations to our event at Mosswood Park on June 10th. FIGMENT is a free participatory arts and creative culture event in Oakland, CA providing an open forum for every type of artist, helps build a creative community, and fosters participatory and public art and creative culture of every sort. FIGMENT demonstrates what the arts can be: participatory, bursting with creativity and completely free, born from the desire to share imagination and invention between artists and the public. Our event is run by an all-volunteer staff and accepts no sponsorships and allows no vending, we are first and foremost here to serve the community and inspire attendees to think of art in the reach of everyone
I'm reaching out to Sudo Room because your organization is full of creative people who like to share and educate, and I believe FIGMENT would be a great place to inspire the next generation of creators.
To get a better idea of the nature of the projects and performances we host, please take a look at our photo galleries from 2014 and 2015. Also feel free to reach out and ask questions. If you have a project you think would be awesome to share go ahead and submit at our artist portal.
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Rick Abruzzo
Co-producer, FIGMENT Oakland

Hey sudoers,
Last week I met with the Safer DIY Spaces group, which the delegates
approved to provisionally fiscally sponsor under a grant-making model back
in December. At the Delegate's Meeting on Thursday, there was consensus to
provisionally approve the proposal, with full approval pending some time to
check in with the individual collectives.
They have been doing incredible work (providing consulting and walkthroughs
for dozens of spaces in danger as well as participating in shaping future
code compliance policies at the city-wide level) and have many more spaces
they're still working on. However, the grant-making model of fiscal
sponsorship has been rather unwieldy (they need to submit a grant request
to allocate their own funds, which Finance then signs off on, then Finance
has to write checks out to them, etc etc).
This proposal is to fully fiscally sponsor Safer DIY Spaces as a
project-based model, enabling them to write checks and make debit card
purchases from their own subaccount (which is where their funds have
already been going).
This was the proposal Laura sent to Consensus on Dec. 14th, which is being
modified to provide sponsorship under a project-based rather than
grant-based model with an adjusted admin fee of 5% (which is the same fee
we charge Real Vegan Cheese):
https://omnicommons.org/pipermail/consensus/2016-December/000984.html
The above-linked proposal contains more info about the project, its
mission, activities, origin story and organizing structure. They have been
meeting weekly at Omni since December.
Check signers on this account are to be Isaac Amala and Sinuba Dreem.
This sponsorship agreement would be applicable retroactively to April 1st,
2017 with an admin fee of 5% (same as Real Vegan Cheese).
If we could pass this at the next Delegate's Meeting on May 4th, that would
be wonderful and enable them to access their own funds in a more timely
fashion, as much of their work is time-sensitive (eg prepping spaces for
surprise inspections, life-safety improvements, etc)
If you have any further questions, the DIY group can be reached at:

i'm looking for a decent modern laptop with a screen resolution greater than
1400x900, which has a decent backlight and good keyboard and touchpad. Ideally
it's pretty cheap.
I can't figure out what brand to get because apparently both lenovo and dell
cant make a decent keyboard, and apples are generally way too expensive for me.
please consider replying off-list to avoid clogging peoples' inboxes!
thank you,

Need them to get the old HPLC working.
One is a weird assymetric 6-pin RJ11 derivative. Even knowing its name
would be useful.
For the RS232 cable we need normal DB9 at the other end.
For the IEEE 488 cable we need male on both ends.
