I'm selling lots of cool stuff; LEDs, 'burnery' things, CHEAP! All
proceeds will go to the Omni.
**************************************************************************************
We'll be hosting our first of a potentially bi-monthly pop-up bazaar

fundraising for the Omni's monthly expenses while simultaneously providing
local makers in our community with income and visibility to support their
continued creative / artistic / crafty / culinary endeavors.
As the sun sets, the Omni will metamorphize into a haunted house befitting
of its creepy cavernous and labrynthian corners!

Hi folks,
I've asked this question before in private with not a lot of good
responses, but I'll put it out to a wider audience. One of the things that
is nice about being a university is full online journal access.
For myself, in the past I've had friends inside a uni run an underground
proxy server for me so I can access said licensed content ("Right to Read
<http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.en.html>" anyone?). UC
Berkeley offers the general public library access for $100 a year, which is
great but cost prohibitive for starving hackers
My question is: is there someway we can get hackerspaces and members forge
a path to having access to non-open access journals? Maybe through some
sort of library grant, or charity access, or something? My library
knowledge here falls short. But there are multiple great reasons for us to
do this:
* accelerate research and innovation at a grassroots/citizen
level. One of the biggest wins I see here is with citizen driven disease
research (austin just opened a medical hackerspace
<http://district.life/2015/10/02/launching-the-first-medical-makerspace-in-t…>).
Can you imagine what the cyborg group could do with a broader network?
* open access journals are great, but the coverage falls short
* for a lot of folks who have never had access to a university,
it's simply a matter of fair educational access
* it can encourage projects to re-invent journal access itself
Would love to hear ideas or possible points of contact!
Love,
Praveen
Hi All,
Below is info about a current project to archive something important and dear to me. Before there was Wired and the couch surfing interns who worked for Mondo and left to start Wired-- there was Mondo 2000. I remember reading an issue of URB magazine and noticing Mondo 2000 on the newsstand. Things every Black nerd needed to see at an early age was in Mondo, like: virtual reality, tech pioneers and mavericks, and even an article about Pamela Z.
To meet and share ideas with these folks was amazing. Names that should mean something if you believe in the real power of what we all strive to do. > > Captain Crunch, R.U. Sirius, Queen Mu, William Gibson, Mark Pesce, and more.
If you're interested in helping to digitize or what not, get in touch with them.

> Posted by R.U. Sirius
> For backers only
> Hi folks!
> Hope this finds you well. I’m under migraine (for real. 3 weeks). Health shit really has been getting in my way.
> Anyway, well, my hope that another very professional writer would join me in completing the Mondo 2000 section of the book appears to have not worked out. I gave it an extra month which is why you all have not heard from me sooner.
> My final plan to finish/crowdsource the book ought to work, if I can gather up all my skills as an editor at the end of the process. I’m going to push hard for speedy delivery. The plan should allow for that.
> Before I share the plan, this seems to be a good place to pick up volunteers to help… even though I haven’t heard back from the previous volunteers.
> This is the first place I’m sharing this new plan, except with a few folks personally. I’ll be looking elsewhere for volunteers too. You folks have been exceptionally kind. Thought you might like to participate.
> So first of all, the folks who said they would open my ancient discs so I could extract the content? We were going to do this, I think, in September. I’ve lost track of you and haven’t heard back. I have a note that makes me think it may have been Bryce Lynch who was going to help with that. Hoping this will shake the tree.
> Secondly, I’m looking for someone to scan all the issue of Mondo 2000 and a bunch of archival stuff … press clippings, ad brochures ad infintum. I’d need it done fast if possible and would prefer someone in the SF Bay Area. Even just the issues would be awesome.
> This this would be tremendously helpful and would improve on both the timing and quality, but if it doesn’t happen, I will work around it.
> Finally, if you have an urge to write something for the book… or to interview a Mondo 2000 participant who interests you, I’m opening it up to “outsiders.” See The Plan, below…
> The Plan
> I plan to take a lot of material from the magazine itself and weave the story telling around it. But also, add commentary geared towards the ideas etc. in the magazine. Even more fun, I think… I am inviting people who wrote for the magazine, a few other favored writers and the patient folks who contributed via Kickstarter to rummage through any magazines they may have and write about it. React to an issue or an article or just let something jar a memory and tell a story.
> It’s my hope to also have the issues all scanned, but in the meantime, if you have that resource (back issues) it’d be great if folks would get going.
> Naturally, I can’t guarantee that every bit of writing will get into the book, but it will get onto the website. Pre-Mondo issues of Reality Hackers and High Frontiers and a few archival bits are at Internet Archives… https://archive.org/details/mondohistory ... but I want to discourage too much focus on the old issues. I’ve got a shitload of writing already about the early years. If you want to participate and you have actual MONDO 2000 magazines, please use those. If I can’t get the magazine scanned soon (or at all) and if I can’t get my old discs cracked open, I will live with that. I’ll be setting a deadline for the end of January 2016 to collect materials. Thank you Thank you Thank you for your patience and support … and I hope a few of you might want to help in one way or another.

Hello All,
I am going in a trip from Nov. 3rd to the 11th and I have no place to park
my car for that length of time.
If someone in the list living near BART would allow me to park in their
driveway or similar; between Richmond to SF Airport I would donate $50 to
Omni (https://omnicommons.org/donate.html). It will make me happier knowing
that I am donating that money Omni, besides that it will way cheaper than
paying the airport!
I would share the receipt of my donation with you.
Many thanks in advance,
Daniel
p.s. please feel free to email me directly to my email or ask me for my
number if you prefer to call. Thx!

It's called "Forum Friends" - a mobile app for accessing and making posts
to internet forums.
Here is the link to install the beta version for Android:
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/org.autonomous.forumfriends
A bit of history:
Internet forums are a grassroots alternative to mega corporate social media
sites and had their beginnings with dial-up bulletin boards in the days
before the internet came into existence. Today there are 10s of thousands
of internet forums with some having over 1.5 million registered users. And
there are now over a dozen good open source forum server platforms
including nodebb, a nodejs forum server.
Forum Friends is a multi-platform app written primarily in Javascript with
some Java and ObjectiveC code to support Android and IOS platforms. Forum
data is accessed and updated via a restful json api and data is cached
locally via indexeddb. The app also works with a nodejs server to securely
verify in-app purchases. The design enables many possibilities including
secure crypto messaging and pier-to-pier serverless message exchange over
private networks.
If someone would like to install it on their android phone or tablet and
take it for a spin, that would be great! Also, if there is a javascript
meetup this week I would like to attend.
Thanks,
Autonomous.
I attached a few screenshots.
Hi all,
We'll be hosting our first of a potentially bi-monthly pop-up bazaar
featuring local artists, artisans and craftmakers this Saturday in the
entrance hall. This is a last-minute call for collaborators - if you're
interested in running a table, playing music, contributing art/crafts, or
something completely different that would contribute to making the event
awesome, please get in touch by sending an email to
collabazaar(a)omnicommons.org
I'm planning also to set up a table for info about the Omni. If you'd like
to add literature/info/flyers about your collective, a class or event, I'll
be setting up a dropoff spot behind the front counter later today.
The mission of these Collabazaars is to create a sustainable model for
fundraising for the Omni's monthly expenses while simultaneously providing
local makers in our community with income and visibility to support their
continued creative / artistic / crafty / culinary endeavors. It's something
many of us have been talking about for awhile now, with limited volunteer
energy to execute - but even if the first one is small I'm sure we can grow
this!
Collaborators confirmed so far:
* Francisco Jimenez, Tucan Vinegars: Selling delicious homemade Costa
Rican-style vinegars. Free tastings available!
* Abby Normal Art by Antoinette Gaggero
* Liberation Food Coop: Fair trade, fresh-roasted coffee, hibiscus
lemongrass kombucha, and a variety of teas to sample.
* Radical zines available by donation
Please share the facebook event widely:

Flyers will be available tomorrow afternoon at the front counter of the
Omni if anyone would like to help with promoting!

Hello All!
Straight to the point:
Instead of going to buy a new/used piece of furniture or whatever item from
a store, one should ask in their Collecive and or the Omni email list(s).
So if a member has it, then the two parties involved will decide the amount
of money that the person receiving the item should donate to Omni. This
idea is not inclusive to items, it could include services.
For example (a real example): I am going in a trip for 11 days (Nov 3 -
11), and I have no place to park my car for that length of time.
If I use the parking lot at the airport, it will cost me $18 a day making
it a total of $198 plus tax. But, I would be happier if someone in the list
living near BART would allow me to park in their driveway or similar; from
anywhere in Richmond to North Oakland, or from SF to the SF Airport so that
I would donate $50 to Omni.
The person doing the monetary donation could do it in person or use the any
of these methods online: https://omnicommons.org/donate.html
What are your thoughts?
Many thanks for reading this email.
Daniel
p.s. i will send another email with my real #ISO request as an example of
what I mean, and perhaps I get some replies.

Hi! I'll be at Sudo Room working on music a bit after 5pm today. If you're
interested in electronic music production please come by and say hello.
************************************************************************************
I'll be holding this meetup every Sunday between 5-7(ish) pm. We can meet
at Sudo Room and move into another open room in Omni if necessary.
This group will be focusing on the production/composition/programming
aspect of electronic music production with an emphasis on Ableton Live and
Logic Pro X. However, all DAW's (Reason, Cubase, Pro-Tools, Fruity Loops
Studio) are welcome.
I'd like to keep the group loose and unstructured for now so we can let it
grow organically.
The idea is to meet others interested in electronic music production, learn
from each other, inspire ideas, collaborate on projects, etc.

*About Hack the Network:*
This project is aimed at connecting qualified candidates from
underrepresented groups with job opportunities in tech and tech-related
companies. The goal is to use my networks to upend the current networked
hiring system, by tapping into pools of talent that people in tech don't
normally have access to.
*Here's how it works*:
1. Check out the jobs below. I’ve included links to their application
pages and if you like you can apply to them directly.
2. However, if you feel strongly that you are a good fit for the
position and would like a referral, send me your resume (even if you have
already sent it) with your name, the job title, and the employer in the
subject line.
3. If it looks like you are what the employer is looking for, I’ll email
you to schedule a quick skype call.
4. If we both want to proceed after that discussion, then I will refer
you to my friend to follow on with the application process.
I can’t guarantee that this process will land you a job. However, you’ll
likely stand a better chance than with just a cold contact. Also, I don't
post all of the positions that HTN companies are seeking to fill. So, if
you see a position of interest posted on an HTN company website which is
not in the newsletter, let me know. Please feel free to share this with
friends who are looking for work, potential employers, or organizations
which you think would be interested.
If tech is the future, we should have a seat at the table.

hello fellow sudoers!
I wish I could be around sudo/omni more but i am so busy/inundated with
bookselling crap! On that tip:
would anyone be interested in helping me make a simple website?
also, I need someone to help me learn filemaker pro (or something similar,
theres something expensive called bookhound that i've heard is good but
pricey,) so that I can (ideally) create a single inventory of my rare books
and use that to upload onto both my website and amazon.com (or abebooks.com)
with the same file.... I think this is possible?! This would be book info,
price and in some cases, images.
basically i'm looking for someone to help me get started online! If you can
help, plz let me know! I have a little bit of $ to pay for this and would
definitely try to compensate you the best I can!
Blessings,
Scott

In other words, it's bad but not much worse than when we first moved
into the building. We've come so far since then, and we've got so much
more time to do this right. And a fortune already in the bank to start
with. :)
Every new day is a gift. Let's celebrate this time we have together
and try our best to make it last.
My biggest takeaway from Becoming Omni was that we need more
communication across the board. So I am going to try to work on just
documenting all the things I've been meaning to do but lack the
capacity to do myself. And we need to empower new people to take on
stuff like that.

Celebrating Open Access
<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/open-access-week-2015>
Open access is the practice of making research and other materials freely
available online, ideally under licenses that permit widespread
dissemination. Open access publishing plays a huge role in the spread of
knowledge, culture, and ideas. To celebrate Open Access Week, we wrote a
series of blog posts exploring about how open access is a powerful tool for
researchers and the general public.

i attended the finance wg meeting tonight where i learned that our 4 months
in this building may be more like 2 months.
additionally, the finance wg apparently has huge holes in their records &
ask that the collectives give an accounting of any & all payments to the
omni over the past year.
it was also suggested that we start making plans to exit the building
around the new year as our $ will likely run out by then.

Sudo,
Do you want any of the following things?
1. an awesome floor fan. The 3-speed fan motor seems to have died in its
sleep, but the sweeping/ocsillator and timers still work, as does the
remote control.
2. a small profile linux laptop. There's a short in the cable to the
display, should be an easy fix (replace that cable) or use external
monitor. Sweet little thing from zareason, currently running ubuntu,
probably 5 years old.
3. a pair of desktop Harman/Kardon speakers that just stopped working. I
suspect the plug or speaker-to-computer wiring. They kick ass when working.
This is the first of more than one notes, offering what I think has
sudo-level promise.
j.
tonight Robb and I bolted a payphone to the outside of The Omni, next to
the front door (on the right). There is no coin box or cover, and the
coin slot is filled solid with hot glue.
it's wired to a VOIP box inside with the door opener computer.
There is an asterisk server in sudoroom made entirely by Robb, which
provides telephone service to the VOIP box on the payphone, as well as two
other VOIP phones so far - one for sudoroom and one for CCL.
The "phone numbers" are
sudoroom: SUDO# (7836#)
counter culture labs: CCL# (225#)
front door: LULZ# (5859#)
the asterisk computer is running "FreePBX" and I have no idea how it
works. Robb is the expert but he is just getting started/
My vision for the system is thus:
Person picks up payphone, gets an immediate recorded message saying
"Welcome to the Omni. Please enter the extension of the collective you
are trying to reach, or 1 for a directory" and then have it give a
directory if you press 1. Then when the collective picks up the phone,
they hear that you're outside the door and they can "buzz" the door open
by pressing * or whatever on their phone. (Insert magic asterisk script
here)
Person outside presses the doorbell button:
Instead of the doorbell ringing, the button goes to a computer which then
calls the payphone, causing it to ring (yes it rings). Person who pressed
the doorbell button answers the phone, and hears the above message, since
a "doorbell" is really not appropriate for a space like the Omni.
(We can still have it be wired to the doorbell but it should do the above
and get the people to use the payphone to contact the collective they
want)
There is no limit on the number of phones we can add. We can put them all
over the Omni and probably all over the world with a tiny bit of network
routing. Also if you have nice non-cordless telephones (not rotary
though) please consider donating them to the project. Or VOIP boxes.
I don't think we should tie the system into the regular telephone system,
for several reasons. But I do think we should allow hackerspaces around
the world to tie into it and be able to call sudoroom and CCL and each
other, but we will have to see what the network traffic adds up to on our
DSL.
Please get in contact with me or Robb if you have ideas for the system or
want to help administrate it. We have no idea how to operate Asterisk or
FreePBX.
thank you

Does anyone want a functioning HP Photosmart 2575 inkjet printer + scanner?
It was in working order last we used it. Getting rid of it because I'm fed
up paying through the nose for inkjet cartridges, so we're switching to a
B/W laser printer. And who needs a scanner anymore, now that you can simply
take a high-res photo of any document with your smartphone?
Anyway - anybody want it? If not, I may just drop it off as E-waste, or
disassemble it for parts...

Hi Sudoers,
Last night was the first electronic music production meetup and it was
great fun! Some friends showed up later in the evening and we had an
impromptu jam.
I understand there is another music collective forming at Omni same night
and time and I have reached out to them to see if we can combine forces!
Looking forward to meeting and collaborating with more of you!

The magstripe card access system at the front door works again.
The problem? It got unplugged from electricity. It needs to be plugged
in. Presently it's plugged into an extension cord.
There is a backup battery in it, which can operate for a really long time,
and as soon as it's unplugged, it starts telling us in IRC (hacker
chatroom) and we start telling each other to plug it back in, but none of
us are there.
This happened, and everyone in the chat was like "lol plug it back in pls"
but it didn't happen. Instead people came by Omni and marveled at the
various wires in the system, thinking they must be the problem. One
person replaced the wires to the door, wiring them incorrectly in the
process.
Eventually it got plugged back into the extension cord and powered up
again, but I had to fix the rewiring that happened while people were
trying to fix it. It works now.
Moral of the story: we are going to wire the thing into the AC wiring of
the building so this doesn't happen anymore.
If you have questions please let's discuss it on the appropriate list,
which is:
access(a)lists.sudoroom.org
thank you!

i regret to inform you that the front door electronic locking mechanism
(omnidoor) is not working. all connections appear to be intact and seem to
have continuity.
however, the beaglebone is powering itself off. the 13v dc power supply
feeding the 6v battery that feeds the 5.2v beaglebone has me concerned. i'm
gonna try 5.2v to power the beaglebone.
any other ideas?
thx

Subject: BREAKING: TPP text leaked
To: danarauz(a)gmail.com
*Last week, WikiLeaks released the final text of the TPP’s intellectual
property rights chapter and it is absolutely terrifying.*
*These are just a few of its most dangerous pieces:*
-
Compel ISPs to take down websites without any sort of court order, just
like SOPA. (Appendix Section I)
-
Extend the US’s copyright regime to require copyrights stand for life
plus 70 years, preventing anyone from using works that belong in the public
domain. (Article QQ.G.6)
-
Criminalize whistleblowing by extending trade secrets laws without any
mandatory exemptions for whistleblowers or investigative journalists.
(QQ.H.8)
-
End anonymity online by forcing every domain name to be associated with
a real name and address. (Article QQ.C.12)
-
Make it illegal to unlock, modify, or generally tinker with a device you
own. (Article QQ.G.10)
-
Export the US’s broken copyright policies to the rest of the world
without expanding any of the free speech protections, like fair use.
(Article QQ.G.17)
*The worst part is that this is just one of the TPP’s 30 chapters. *
*The final text confirms our worst fears — click here to take action
demanding Congress vote NO on the TPP.
For years, governments have held critics of the massive Trans-Pacific
Partnership agreement in a perfect catch 22. Officials brushed off public
outcry and concern by claiming that the dissenters didn’t have all the
facts.
This was by design—the 12 country trade deal was negotiated entirely behind
closed doors by industry lobbyists and government appointees, and even now
the text of the agreement is still classified.
But late last week, WikiLeaks released the final text of the Intellectual
Property chapter, meaning those excuses won’t work anymore.
*We’re planning to go all out against the TPP, but the first step is to
make sure Congress knows just how many people oppose the TPP. *
*Click here to take action demanding Congress vote NO on the TPP.
Taking action today is just the beginning, because if all we do is send
emails and make phone calls, Congress is not going to reject the TPP. Too
many giant industries are seriously invested in making sure Congress
ratifies the TPP.
*If we’re going to win, we need to go big. Which is exactly what we’re
going to do.*
*So take action right now. Contact your Congresspeople now and tell them to
vote against the TPP
<http://list.fightforthefuture.org/mpss/c/2wA/ZgwNAA/t.1ra/JRRvvf--QMGuoqxOh…>*.
Then get ready to do more because we’re going to unleash some of our
strongest campaigns ever.
Already we have plans to work with hundreds of different groups as a
massive coalition to fight the TPP, coordinate gigantic on-the-ground
protests in key cities across the country, and produce compelling content
to spread the word to as many different audiences as possible just what is
at stake in the TPP.
*To do all that, we need your help — if you can, pledge to chip in $5 every
month between now and when the TPP fight ends so that we can run our
biggest, boldest, and best campaign yet.
Thanks for all you do,
Charlie
P.S. Want to read the text of the chapter for yourself? Check it out on
WikiLeaks here
<http://list.fightforthefuture.org/mpss/c/2wA/ZgwNAA/t.1ra/JRRvvf--QMGuoqxOh…>,
or read their overview of it here
<http://list.fightforthefuture.org/mpss/c/2wA/ZgwNAA/t.1ra/JRRvvf--QMGuoqxOh…>.
It’s long and complicated, so maybe you'll see something that we didn't. If
you do, send us an email.

Hello Sudoers, I am samthetechie from c-base, Berlin.
I am on Mitch's
https://noisebridge.net/wiki/NoisebridgeChinaTrip5#People_interested_in_goi…
trip (which is amazing). Currently in Shanghai spending a lot of time at
this cool hackerspace: https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/Xinchejian
I came across https://www.climategames.net/en/ which some folk at the
space might quite like and the trailer (https://youtu.be/PLuSZSI0vz8) is
awesome and the concept looks thrilling!
So does anyone want to collaborate on ideas for how hackerspaces in
general can participate in the climate games and maybe who wants to make
a team and get disbodient? Omni/Sudoroom Team? A Noisebridge team?
C-base team? etc
Not sure about the best way to move forwards, open to suggestions? Maybe
a call or IRC meeting would be best? freenode/#climategames
I posted this on the mailing list as I see this more as a project rather
than a simple: here is a link/thing :)
Cheers,

Eight. A pair of squares. Eight is two times two times two, and as such is
the first cubic number after one. As the number of vertices of a cube or
faces of its dual, the octahedron, eight is complete. At the molecular
level this is displayed by atoms, which long to have a full octave of
eight electrons in their outermost shell. A sulphur atom has six electrons
in their outermost shell, so eight atoms get together to share electrons,
forming an octagonal sulphur ring. Eight is also the next Fibonacci number
after five. Within architecture the octogon often signifies the transition
between Heaven and Earth, as a bridge between the square and the circle. A
spherical dome often surmounts a cubic structure by way of a beautiful
octagonal vault. Eight is particularly revered in the religion and
mythology of the orient. The ancient Chinese oracle, the I-Ching, is based
on combinations of eight trigrams, each the result of a twofold choice
between a broken (yin) or an unbroken (yang) line, made three times.
Depicted opposite is the 'Former Heaven Sequence', said to represent the
ideal pattern of transformations in the cosmos. Notice how each trigram is
the complement of its opposite. Echoing these ancient Chinese pairs, the
modern world is full of computers which think in units called 'bytes',
each made of eight binary 'bits'. In a seven-tone scale the eighth note is
the octave, twice the pitch of the first note, and so signals the movement

I sometimes need to open the building and take responsibility for
events. I participate in organizing and maintaining the building.

Nerd for Nature's <http://nerdsfornature.org/> mission is to bring together
technologists and environmental professionals to collaboratively build
awesome tools that help us understand, protect, and revive the natural
world.
We launched in 2013 to a sold-out crowd. We mind mapped
<http://blog.nerdsfornature.org/post/46177287870/nerds-for-nature-mind-map>
and discovered a whole community of nature nerds eager to learn,
collaborate, and build. Since then we’ve bioblitzed
<http://blog.nerdsfornature.org/post/51050945065/mclaren-bioblitz-success>,
monitored
landscape changes <http://nerdsfornature.org/monitor-change/>, deployed drones
for science
<http://blog.nerdsfornature.org/post/98202275419/prototyping-our-future>,
measured
air quality, and more. Recently we expanded to include Nerds for Nature:
Silicon Valley. Now we want your help to envision the next chapter in Nerds
for Nature.
Join us for an interactive, social evening full of interesting people
sharing ideas for what creative tech and design can do for the
environmental movement.
We’ll kick things off with several lightning talks about successful Nerds
collaborations. We’ll then work together to create our next mind map! The
more ideas, suggestions, and creativity the better.
Whether you’ve been with us for awhile or this will be your first event --
we’re excited to hear from you!
*Location:* Manylabs,1086 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94103
*Time:* 3pm-5pm / doors open at 2:30pm and there'll be time for mingling
afterward
Please sign up for the waiting list, even if the tickets sell out! And if
you’ve RSVP’d but cannot attend, please remove your name so that someone
else may take your spot.
