Hi, A lot of us at SudoRoom are programmers. We encounter algorithms only during coding interviews or during high level talks about impossibly cool and complex stuff. I learned how to code in a non traditional way, but I'm finding algorithms more and more fun outside of the context of a coding interview! I want to live with algorithms no matter what. They are actually really cool, but they just don't seem to be that much fun and are presented as objects of terror in everyday life. The event will have ~25 makers and hackers from China, Japan, and US presenting their projects in a publicexpo, which is expected to have ~15,000 attendees. The first day willbe keynote speeches followed by a public display of all the projectsthe attending teams are working on. These will be things involvingdrones, VR, EEG systems, etc. The second day has talks focused oneducation, creativity, and the role China will play in the future ofinnovation, followed by a networking event for attending teams,manufacturers, and whoever else wants to participate (this part won'tbe open to general public). The last two days feature tours ofShenzhen companies for the visiting teams. At the time, we said that, “we will have to change Gratipay in some yet-to-be-fully-understood fashion in order to survive the transition away from Balanced, and it will be hard.” We’re now beginning to understand the changes we have to make, and they couldn’t be harder. Balanced is directing their customers to Stripe, and Stripe rejected us because they believe our model “qualifies as money transmission <https://github.com/gratipay/gratipay.com/issues/3245#issuecomment-91112973>.” They followed up to specify changes <https://github.com/gratipay/gratipay.com/issues/3324#issuecomment-93562216> we would need to make in order to use their service. These changes are drastic enough, but the suggestion that Gratipay might be regulated as a money transmitter is even more serious. Event: Cartoonist Conspiracy Evening at SudoRoom Thursday Nights

It dissolved, but it was a group of super Nerdy and talented cartoonists. We did a lot of comic book jams at the Church Coffee shop as well as the Cartoon museum and Rock Paper Scissors Collective. *I'd like to have an informal cartoonist jam that runs alongside the Counter Culture Labs and Sudoroom thursday night.* I'm putting it in the calendar and if anyone objects I'll take it down. I'm keeping it super short, but the idea is that before I or any other cartoonist leaves the space we have at least one cool cartoon related to the: - hardware hacking - mushroom / fungus growing - artificial cheese creating - 3d printing - yoga dancing - naked autonomous activist poetry reading - graffiti techno bear woodshed making - etc. that goes on at SudoRoom. Here's a description of the event: Stay Brown Stay Down Fest is a three-day music, culture and arts festival happening in the Bay Area in August 2015. The festival is a celebration recognizing the contributions of Latinxs/Chicanxs/Indigenxs in punk. While we encompass multiple intersecting identities, we recognize that they are the end products of colonization and we use punk not only as an artistic manifestation but as a tool of resistance against systemic oppression. The festival has been produced in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Antonio, and New York. This year, the Bay Area will take over. Originally conceived as Latino Punk Fest in Chicago and held annually all over the US, we decided to take the basic framework and transform it. We plan on hosting around 20 bands, a number of community organizations who will teach workshops and offer free services for the community, and invite a number of vendors to table within those two days. Money charged for admission will go directly back to the bands, many of which will be traveling from out of town/state/country. If we can make enough, we would also hope to be able to give back to the organizations who come to teach a workshop. We do not plan on making any revenue. Our goal is to break even and to help out those who are helping us.

Museum shelf at SudoRoom with history of hardware

I was thinking we might like to create a museum shelf at SudoRoom near the entrance. I could do the first one - we could have rotating exhibits, but we would basically exhibit a random antique piece of hardware that we find in the space. Even if the hardware doesn't have an obvious deep historical impact, it could still be interesting. I was looking up old Samsung chips on PDF friday night. Genny Needs a 200V 1F Cap...by tomorrow :/

hi, i tore into the genny that was donated to sudo this am and discovered a 200V 1000uF *can* type capacitor was blown. i was hoping to use it tomorrow (friday) in a mobile sound system for the march to/from the port. anyone have any ideas as to where i could find one? of coarse, we just took several large lcdtvs to ewaste last night. thx

Anyone want my old hot tub cover?

I just replaced the cover on my hot tun and am about to throw away the old one, but I thought I would offer it up to anyone at my local hacker spaces in case anyone has a use for it. There are 2 halves, each a bit less than 4x8 feet and about 4" thick. It's made of some sort of medium density closed cell foam covered in a vinyl fabric of some sort which is easily cut off. Let me know if you are interested. I can drop it off for you anywhere nearby. If I don't hear, it goes to the dump on Tuesday. -- -steve

Automated last BART announcements in sudo

sudo room now automatically announces last BART departures. It should announce last departures from MacArthur station for each of the BART directions, SF, Richmond, Pittsburg and Fremont. It will announce each last departure twice in the window 30 minutes to 10 minutes before departure. Here's how it works: I hooked up a usb audio adapter and some speakers to the sudo server, wrote a little script that talks to the BART API and set it up to run as a cronjob that speaks the results using espeak. Omni finances !

Dear Omni financiers, I just sent all of you invoices for your collectives' rent and shared expenses at the Omni this month. If you didn't receive one, check your spam folder and let me know if you need me to resend. Here is a breakdown of the Omni's total shared expenses in April: *Utilities:* - PG&E: 721.44 - EBMUD: 478.60 - WM: 140.36 *Taxes & Insurance:* - Building insurance: 661.00 - Director's & Officer's Insurance: 152.50 - Property taxes: 797.28 - Building tax: 181.35 Utilities are split between member collectives and tenants. Taxes and insurance are split evenly among member collectives only. If at all possible, please pay your rent and shared expense invoices on time (by Friday, May 1). The Omni's ca$h flow is a little low this month. If you have questions or you know your collective will be late paying rent this month, talk to someone on the finance working group. inspiration: it's just a plant coloring book for little kids
