[omni-consensus] FIRST DRAFT PROPOSAL: Village of Love

Hi Sudoroom members, We will have to send our delegate (me) to the delegates' meeting in two weeks with a position on the following proposal to operate a day center in the basement of Omni, as described here: https://omnicommons.org/pipermail/consensus/attachments/20220505/d539bbca/a… When I first heard about this idea, I didn't think it would be practical, but having been in the delegates' meeting and tonight having heard directly from Joey who is leading this operation, I'm confident that it will be a positive use of the space, and in line with the common values that Omni collectives share. Also, this proposal will significantly increase the chances that we'll not lose the building in 210 days when the baloon mortgage comes due, as the money coming in from Village Of Love will help us present as a viable operation to banks considering giving us a loan. I know we don't want to make decisions based purely on money, or purely because we want to keep the Omni, so I think it's great that this proposal seems to me like it's going to be a good thing. If sudoroom members have specific questions or concerns about this proposal, speak up now so that we can start the process of addressing them. Meeting summary for Weds. May 4

Last night's meeting was very productive. Here are the highlights: *1) Juliana is planning a Women & Non-binary Hack & Code night on Mondays.* She's going to tour the space next week to get familiar with it, and hopefully hold an event on Monday, May 16. If you're a woman or NB and you want to see more events like this, introduce yourself to Juliana and make a plan to stop by with friends! *2) Imma shared the confusion and frustration a new member collective joining Omni Commons felt *regarding the terms of their incorporation into Omni, and we discussed ways to improve that process. *3) Proposal: Code of Conduct* Since it was proposed that we adopt a new code of conduct and update our statements of purpose and values, there has been a lot of drafting, and the result looks pretty great: About - Sudo Room <https://sudoroom.org/wiki/About>. I proposed that we codify this draft as final. So if you want to object, do so, otherwise we'll adopt this text as official at the next meeting. *4) Laser cutting* Arthur and I are going to figure out how to use the laser cutter. learning to use the laser cutter

is there some patient human (or equivalent) here that can teach me how to use the laser cutter? I know almost nothing about such machines beyond a solid theoretical understanding of how it works. I'm looking for a class or elmer to teach me how one really uses such machines.

chatting about SudoRoom + Omni commons at the last Noisebridge five minutes of fame

Carl and I spoke at the last Noisebridge five minutes of fame - (the april 2022 edition!) But then I showed how I was experimenting in the Omni Commons ballroom, and I emphasized how SudoRoom has this very unique environment in the SF Bay Area -- a place where artists can jam alongside hardcore hardware hackers, and we have a lot of beautiful space to experiment. I couldn't make it to tonight's Hardware Hack night, but I think I'll do a blog post about my project so far (the bike party) and my next steps, which involve making a series of mobile apps to help do skew and distort. Yeah, I agree that with the values and purpose/intent it’s more important to be specific. Especially because I think the stated intent (based on sudoroom’s wiki: social change, community engagement, etc.) is actually quite a bit more ambitious relative to, say, Noisebridge, whose vision statement is (paraphrasing) “provide infrastructure and opportunities for people interested in <various art/technology topics>”. What does openness and “hack the planet” mean to you? Why are those things important as values? Are those things also our intent, or is there a separate mission/purpose? Wednesday meeting

How do I widen the hole in a hardened steel bike trailer mount (or work around it)?

I bought a really nice bike trailer I'm so excited to use, but the mounting bracket hole is too small for the axle, and the mounting bracket is made of hardened cast steel. I have a crappy cheap bike trailer that had the same issue, and I was able to widen the hole with a hand drill, but this new one I couldn't make a dent in with a drill press. I need advice. Can I drill it? If so, how? Can I mill it or turn it? If so, how? Does anyone know of a machinist who can do this, or can anyone do this themselves for compensation? Is it possible to replace this with another one that fits the axle? Or make and adapter that fits the mounting bracket and the axle? The bike is electric, so the axle contains wires and can't be replaced, as far as I know. Any advice would be appreciated. Tonight I'll be hosting Sudoroom for those who want to come hack on whatever in person, or through telepresence of any means you can invoke. Remember that Omni Commons and Sudoroom policy is presently that EVERYONE MUST WEAR A MASK AT ALL TIMES INSIDE THE BUILDING. (if you want to eat something you should go outside) in the past few weeks, we've had about 5-15 people over the course of the evening, not including remote participants who logged in through the telescreen.
