Hi there! I'm reaching out from the Open Source Hardware Association. We
are hosting our second annual Open Healthware Conference in San Francisco
this year and would love to invite Sudo Room folks who are working on any
open source medical or health related hardware devices to apply to speak
about their work and/or demo a device at the conference.
We've worked with Open Insulin, who spoke at our last conference and shared
that the project started at Sudo room, and thought you all might have other
folks working on devices.
You can apply to speak and/or demo a device here: Open Healthware proposals

Subject: [sudo-info] Build a site skillshare
Hello,
My name is Ghaida. I’m a product designer living in the east bay. I would
like to run a 90-minute “build a site for freeish” workshop. I see a lot of
local artists who don’t have the coding skills to make websites and end up
using expensive proprietary services like Wix and Squarespace. I want to offer
this workshop for free to folks who want to make a website with AI to promote
themselves or their business. I’d love to use Sudoroom as a venue if possible.
Happy to chat about details.
Thanks,
Ghaida
This artist is visiting town and wanted to know if he could speak at Sudo
Room or give away any art. I told him that we don't have anyone dedicated
to organizing this kind of event, but that I'd ask if anyone wants to.
If you'd like to host him during November, put it on the calendar and go
for it.

Subject: [sudo-info] An idea
To: <info(a)sudoroom.org>
Good Morning,
I am a Guatemalan Artist in Canada. I am wondering if your space would want
to be part of a project I've been Working on.
https://jaredarmandosofoifa.com/the-ocean-gives/
This is my largest painting to date. It spans roughly four feet by five
feet. I want to give it away in a raffle to anyone that shares a smile.
This year being in a position of comfort, it pained me greatly to see
everyone around me struggling with the rising costs of everything. Being
from Guatemala I have a deep knowledge of plants and how to cultivate them.
I volunteered my time at a giant garden in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,
operated by the local food bank. I realized that I was focusing on the
wrong things, while it was great to feed people, as a painter I couldn't
stand by and not feed their souls. Given that fine Art is mostly out of
reach from the working class, I decided that I would rather "sell" my
painting for smiles. I want to provide people struggling for survival, to
have some kind of hope.
In our politicized world it is hard to be kind to others and not guarded.
What we need is community and unity. I feel like this project gets at the
core of what future artists will provide the world. If you would like I can
provide files for ready-to-print media including a poster with a QR code
and printable raffle tickets from anyone that does not have a 'smart'
telephone. As well as the poem about the painting.
I will be in the Bay Area during Nov.8th-Nov.23rd promoting my Art and the
seven works of writing I completed during COVID lockdowns in Canada, while
also working on my stand-up comedy and music at any open mics I can get
into.
I would be happy to give a brief Artists talk outlining the project and the
future role of Artists as we fight to stay relevant in a world where AI
threatens all our livelihoods.
Attached are some media provided to me from the Saskatoon food bank while
my painting was in their space.
It's not required, but as a working Artist I would greatly appreciate any
honorarium (if your organization can afford it) to help me with my travel
expenses and shipping cost for the painting.
Let me know your thoughts,
Sincerely,
Jared Armando Sofoifa
ps I'm the one in the pink hat. Also attached some additional paintings of
mine.

hey romy!
i saw your slack message in april about adding the unconference to the
sudo room calendar, i tried to slack you about the next one but not sure if
you saw it, would love to get the next one on the calendar!
lmk what info you need?

tysm!
ajay
hey folks,
wanted to share another event platform option that might be worth exploring
alongside (or instead of?) luma.
*kinlia* (kinlia.com) is a bay area-based platform focused on "conscious
creative wellness events and communities." the founder gina levy is
berkeley-based and has been supportive of local hackerspaces and community
spaces.
some features that might be useful:
-
*free ticketing* (no cost to organizers, supports free tickets, donation
tickets, promo codes)
-
*promotional support* - they help promote events through their instagram
(17K followers), whatsapp groups, and email blasts if you use their
ticketing
-
*community pages* - not just individual events but ongoing community
presence
sudo room already has had a page on kinlia for almost 2 years:
https://kinlia.app.link/PSbgInT1rLb (lmk if that link doesn't work, seems
to require being logged in)
since there was nobody there i was made a community leader but haven't
really activated it yet, happy to have others in that role instead. here's
the management dashboard: https://app.kinlia.life/dashboard/communities/1253
*context:* many of us remember when we left meetup.com due to their 50%
price increase. we switched to luma which has been working well. kinlia
feels like it's positioned somewhere between those two - more
community-focused than meetup, perhaps more values-aligned than luma,
without needing to upgrade like luma requires?
<https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?pli=1#all/1923e5111807d7cd>
not saying we should switch everything over, but could be worth exploring
especially if anyone wants to experiment with their promotional support or
if the "conscious creative wellness" framing resonates with certain types
of events we host.
it was great to be at fixit clinic last night and talk with everyone! also
good to brainstorm next steps re CALLI (esp re the new property manager)
with folks last night.
thoughts?
much love,
ajay
