Marcus Zamani's Celebration of Life — this Saturday, 7/25

by Ajay Tallam

Hey sudo room fam, Today would have been Marcus's birthday. 🎂 He was a longtime part of this community, and I wanted to personally reach out because I know how many of you were touched by his presence here — whether through late-night hacking sessions, shared meals, or just his particular way of making a room feel a little warmer. This Saturday, July 25th, we're gathering to celebrate his life: - *10 AM–12 PM* — Garden gathering at OPC <https://partiful.com/e/bb0nooADB0GCcBRJTbxZ?focus=invite>, honoring Marcus in a living, growing way - *1–3 PM* — Celebration of Life <https://partiful.com/e/yhhvpHA2nQ0MhJGMSwLk> at the Omni Commons Ballroom If you knew Marcus, please come if you can — and if you can't make it in person, please consider sharing a memory, photo, or video on the tribute site: https://online-tribute.com/marcuszamani. His family would treasure hearing how he showed up in this space specifically. We're also looking for hands to help with setup, outreach, costs and day-of logistics — reply here or message me or jenny directly if you can lend even a little time this week, whether as a friend or ally or otherwise. Marcus gave a lot to this room. This is a small chance to give some of that back to him and his family. With love, ajay

Beyond40@SudoRoom 7/18: Exploring FOSS Firmware/BIOS + AMA w Coreboot dev

by michaelz

Ever wondered what runs your computer before the GNU/Linux even starts? Most people don’t realize that proprietary firmware can control your device in ways you never intended. Join us for a meetup focused on free BIOS and firmware this Saturday at 7pm. The event will feature presentation and an AMA with a Coreboot developer. We will discuss the security and freedom issues imposed by proprietary firmware blobs like Intel ME, how Coreboot addresses these issues, and how we can build libre systems on non-x86 platforms. Attendees are welcome to bring their laptops to get help on flashing Coreboot or me_cleaner. https://gath.io/o9y69Xnw7ZoWuPc_Ra3YH Best, michaelz

Fwd: Computer Art Give Away

by Romy Mimi Ilano

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Larry Dieterich <macworks(a)dcn.org> Date: Thu, Jul 16, 2026 at 3:53 PM Subject: Computer Art Give Away To: Adele Louise Shaw <adele(a)adeleshaw.com> Hello again. You probably remember the computer art experience that you visited years ago - the one that used nearly a hundred vintage Mac computers to depict and celebrate women. The art was titled “Second Bite” and it revisited the story of Eve, the Snake and the Apple. The art closed in 2024 and the computers have been carefully stored in an old barn in downtown Davis. Now, it is time for all of those Mac computers to go away for good. We are writing you now to offer them up for re-homing. They’re all set up and ready to go. They come with cords and an explanatory instruction sheet. They’re completely simple to use. Just take it home, turn it on and be ready for an edifying experience, unlike any other. If you want one (or more) of these magical contraptions, please reach out. Come and get ‘em! All free. Just drop by 405 7th St, Davis between 8am and 2pm on Saturday/Sunday - July 18 / 19 & July 25 / 26. You can also email macworks(a)dcn.org for more info or call/text 530-867-1402 to arrange a different pickup time. with love and gratitude, Adele Shaw and Larry Dieterich ps This is a limited-time offer. The computers will be recycled by the end of July. Don’t wait.

Interview Request – Understanding FDM 3D Printing User Experiences and Material Needs

by Eunyoung Oh

Dear Sir or Madam, Hi, I'm Eunyoung Oh, and I am a Post Doctoral Researcher in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea. Our team is currently participating in the 2026 Public Technology-Based Market Exploration and Startup Support Program at the UCB . As part of this program, we are conducting short interviews with experienced FDM 3D printer users to better understand their printing experiences, challenges, and material needs. We will be staying near Berkeley for three weeks in July and participating in a training program at Berkeley Haas. The interview will take approximately 10–20 minutes and will cover topics such as printer usage frequency, printing environment, common difficulties, and the advantages and disadvantages of the filaments currently being used. Your experience and insights would be highly valuable to our research and startup exploration activities. If you are available, we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to arrange an interview at your convenience and would be grateful for the opportunity to visit at a time that is convenient for you. (Zoom or Teams are available) If you are not the appropriate person to contact, we would also greatly appreciate it if you could recommend someone nearby who frequently uses FDM 3D printers. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. We look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Eunyoung Oh Eunyoung Oh Center for Composite Materials and Concurrent Design / Post Doc. 81307 Research Complex 1, 2066 Seobu-ro, Jangan-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, #16419, Republic of Korea Tel +82-31-299-4067 Mobile +82-10-2836-1521 Email ey0208(a)skku.edu

OpenWrt and radio night attendance

by Larry Doolittle

Friends - (1) For those of you running OpenWrt, please note that today (Jul 1) the openwrt.org team released OpenWrt 25.12.5. It includes three "Critical" security updates. I already updated my home Wi-Fi. :-) (2) I'd love to come in to radio night tonight and get some help making MeshCore work on my Seeed T1000-E. Also chat about other topics like reticulum. But my body isn't up to the drive. :-( I've seen people connect to the room AV system over jitsi. Could I try that, as a second-best scenario? Can someone send me a link? - Larry
