At this point there have been several informal calls for Xavier to be banned. After last night's events I reluctantly agree that he should not be welcome at Sudo until he's accountable for his behavior: * he made threats of violence towards somebody at Sudo * he did something similar at Rock Paper Scissors * he zealously defended other acts of violence committed by a friend of his I'm willing to act as a mediator, but I'm not confident that the problem can be resolved. So I formally propose that he be banned from our space for an indefinite period. Are there any objections?

April is Design Month at your friendly neighboring hackerspace

Just passing this on, some people might be interested: Starting April 5, Ace Monster Toys Hackerspace in Oakland is pleased to host a month of design courses and workshops with Régis Lemberthe of A&Ré Design. Originally trained as an industrial designer, Régis graduated with his Master's Degree in Humanitarian Design And Sustainable Living before moving to Berlin and getting involved in the local maker community. He now presents several different workshops there, in parallel with his activities as part of A&Ré Design Studio. From his description of the Design Tour (http://2014.design-tour.org): "One of the most appropriate and exciting answers to mass production and consumption, the maker movement has in the last years gained considerable recognition. Fab labs and hacker spaces are being created in every major city, offering those familiar with low-scale productions techniques access to adequate machinery, as well as training for everyone else. Skill sharing in fab labs is based on the know-how and experience of artists, designers, makers, programmers and hackers committed to making production accessible to all. Yet, while some techniques are widely spread, others sadly remain more confidential. After a few years spent facilitating events at Betahaus Berlin, French designer Régis Lemberthe goes on tour - a series of craft workshops and social+collaborative design courses hosted in maker spaces of various different cities - lasting for a month, wherever interest and facilities are. International Community/Mesh Network Coalition

Hi Labitators! We're starting a coalition for an international coalition of free/libre community and mesh networks. One of the first goals is to define a license for free networks similar to a free software license, so that all of the current free networks can connect to each other. We're trying to get funding from the Night Foundation and your tweets, facebook likes, etc. will help a lot! Here's a small status update: We've developed a new OpenWRT compatible firmware based on German and Slovenian projects + our own code. We are currently testing ~25 nodes deployed around the bay area to find and eliminate the worst bugs before a wider release of ~100 nodes. We've been developing an automated mesh node deployment system that allows us to take supported routers out of the box and flash and configure them for use in our network with minimal human intervention. It is almost complete, and it uses the sticker printer program developed by Asbjorn from Labitat to automatically print a sticker with your basic info (e.g. your default password) that we stick on the the routers before shipping to new node operators. One of the awesome things about our firmware is that it allows you to choose how much of your own internet connection you want to share with the mesh, and all mesh traffic is routed through a VPN owned by the local mesh organization which handles all abuse complaints or legal inquiries. This functionality makes the mesh nodes immediately useful, even before we reach a node density where new nodes are likely to be within reach of existing nodes. This concept was first implemented by wlan slovenja so all credit to them! Our local non-profit mesh organization is called sudo mesh ( https://sudomesh.org ) and the network is called People's Open Network ( https://peoplesopen.net ). sudo mesh is providing a firmware and support for getting on peoplesopen.net and will start selling pre-flashed routers for peoplesopen.net later this year. sudo mesh is focused on Oakland. We are making sudo mesh an easily forkable organization, with all material (legal documents, code, marketing material, documentation) available under open licenses, and we are encouraging others to create groups like sudo mesh that support peoplesopen.net in other geographic areas. Sorry for late notice, but my morning's cleared up and I can commit to being at the bookfair! I'm going to be at Sudoroom around 8am to pack up the printer and needed accessories and shoot for loading everything into my car by 8:45. It would be nice to have help during loading and unloading. I can pick people up in my car before or after this. I can't stay until the end though - ideally I'd like to pack up the printer mid-afternoon and then bring it to the Omni and set it up for that event, but we'll see how easy it is to transport out during peak hours. Lemme know if you'd like to help!

Sudo Non Profit Status for Grant App Challenge ending March 31

Can someone clarify our current status? I am interested in applying for a grant however these are the requirements "I certify that the organization for which I am submitting this application is eligible to apply for the Challenge. This means my organization is a registered and recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a registered office in the Bay Area. If you are a fiscal sponsor submitting an application for a sponsored group, the sponsored group must also be located in the Bay Area. " So do we qualify? Are we a 501(c)(3) Thanks! Liberty-
