Hey folks, a little bit more in depth financial report this week. Can
someone show this at the meeting? Our secretary, my usual proxy, is
home sick.
Can someone chat with me about presenting this stuff? I can also write
a little more elaborate explanation.
The attached charts are looking at *individual donor income*. That
means I've excluded corporate matching, anonymous cash donations
(which all go under Anonymous), and the large donation from the Thiel
foundation. What you're looking at here is individuals (all renamed to
protect the innocent) who regularly donate to noisebridge, and trends
in that income.
A few interesting notes:
- We always seem to get nervous about our balance in the winter, but
we actually have less income over the summer.
- 2011 was actually a good year for us. That was the first year we
panicked in the winter about not having enough money, twittered about
it, and made lots of money. You can see the peak in late 2011 / early
2012. 2011 also has the largest average annual donation per donor, the
largest annual total, and the largest summer income. Winter 2010 beats
winter 2011 though.
- We have a small core of amazing, consistent, large donors. I thought
these might change over the years but they are actually pretty
consistent. You can see them in the color coding for the stacked
annual chart. So thank you to Signe Bergman, Gertrude Harding,
Marianne Hainisch, Emily Stowe, and most of all Bríet
Bjarnhéðinsdóttir, for their incredible support of Noisebridge.

Howdy Folks,
Intro to Rocketry is starting in the next hour! We will start hacking right away, and begin reviewing the nuts and bolts of rocket theory once we feel critical mass of participants has been reached. So far sounds like there are already a number of experienced rocketeer sudoers.
Cheers,
Hol
Calling all teachers, parents, educators, teenagers, and kids! The
Awesome Foundation grants $1000 to people with AWESOME projects every
month. We want to remind everyone that for our February grant, we will
sponsor only projects submitted by kids! Submissions can come from
individuals or groups of people who are either under the age of 18 or in
high school. We will also consider applications submitted by educators
on behalf of a classroom-wide project.
We want to encourage youth to dream up an awesome idea and experience
the magic of bringing it to fruition.
What kind of project? Well, the single most important guideline is that
the project is totally awesome. But, we also tend to favor projects that
spread awesomeness to a wide audience. We suggest that interested
applicants take a look at our website and browse through past winning
projects: http://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/sf
Of course, anyone may submit an application at any time, but February’s
grant will only go to a kid’s project. Students should submit proposals
through our website between February 1st and February 28th.

Please spread the word to anyone you know who works with kids, or may
just be interested!

Hey people!
During Oakland Wiki's hackerspaces-themed editathon last Sunday, I worked
on the Ace Monster page, and through that discovered "Hacker Scouts", an
amazing mentorship program for young people interested in hacking stuff.
Today while lurking Ace Monster's discuss listserv, I ran into a great
convo on it. If you are interested in developing a youth engagement program
at Sudo Room, these people would definitely be great allies and provide
good solid insight. There already seems to be a collaboration going between
them and Mothership Hackermoms.
(Message 10 is quite beautiful.)

Dear Friends,
We have an amazing teen at Hacker Scouts who is trying to fund his
ambitious and amazing project for this year's Maker Faire. Cameron is a 17
year old, homeschooled guy that paints, plays with lightning, makes
electronic mechanical contraptions, writes computer programs, and
builds/fixes computers. His project, the TARDIS tesla is very cool and
ingenious in it's design and entertainment capabilities.
We are proud to be helping Cam reach his Maker Faire goal. As a member of
our Hacker Scouts Guild 001 in Oakland, we have the privilege of seeing him
work on a variety of projects with precision, ingenuity and passion. He
also mentors the younger members of the Guild with compassion and a cool
ability to share knowledge. Between the Hacker Scouts mentors and his
mentors at Arc Attack, he has the support to achieve his dream. We believe
in him and his TARDIS Tesla, and ask you to contribute to his
campaign<http://www.gofundme.com/TARDIS-Tesla>.
You can find his fundraising page here<http://www.gofundme.com/TARDIS-Tesla
>,
and our article about it on the Hacker Scouts
Website<http://hackerscouts.acemonstertoys.org/?p=530>.
Even if you can't contribute, will you help out by sharing this?
Thank you so much for your time,
Samantha Cook, homeschooling mom of 3 and Executive Director, Hacker Scouts

Yeah Cam has brought his Tesla coil into the space a few times to show it
off, impressive stuff. I think he and Costa worked together on the laser
cutter to build the control panel for it.

Thank you! Last night he was speaking so enthusiastically about his
project; I hope we can help him achieve his goal! If anyone is interested
in the current Tesla Coils he has, he will be bringing them to the next
Open Lab on 2/17. Sam

Shared and shown off. Encouraging ambition like this is one of the best
things we can do for the world - Cthulu knows we need more Doctors and Mad
Scientists!

I've worked on metro and adhoc based mesh networks at Airespace and then
Cisco (Cisco acquired Airespace) as one of two architects. The mesh project
I worked on was deployed for the city of Mountain View (dual use for VTA
traffic stats), Stanford University, and for drone video surveillance
during operation desert storm. The state of the art has improved much
since, today I find the following paper on decentralized routing utilizing
a cellular automata based approach very interesting:
"A Routing Algorithm based on Cellular Automata for Mobile Ad-hoc
Networks"
