TBH I never knew those 4 stations were communal. Never seen the one at
north end of the table on, can try to turn it on last time. The other ones
mentioned kinda dismiss the purpose of a coding night which is everyone
close by at a table where collaboration is easier. But yea, signs would
help people to know they are allowed to use them.
But I understand the clustering factor for the Tuesday Hardware hacking, so
maybe I should focus on the laptops like Jake mentioned, which can be put
away when done with the event. We're actually doing this as well, I just
went last week and took a look at most laptops, put the working ones (as in
it turns on and boots) in one of the lockers. And the non working/missing
parts ones on a shelf in the back of the room.

I think it's great that you got the iMac working,

taking up too much space with public desktop computers.
And if the two near the laser cutter weren't in use because people didn't
know
about them...maybe we need a better sign?
I just don't want the main table to get cluttered with computers, i've
heard
in the past that it really makes the space a lot more welcoming to have
open
space on the main tables.
I would like if people would adopt / take home / donate things like the
iMac
and try to make better use of the existing public computers. And for
events
when more computers are needed, we should have a set of working laptops
(even
though maybe their batteries don't work) that can be used in open spaces,
and
then put away when we're done.

The iMac is quite usable, 4GB of RAM, and now has
Debian 11 (with KDE
Plasma) on it. One of the Mac Minis is also working now, but
with 500MB of
RAM, will be of limited use. If it was up to me, I'd toss some retro
console emulators on it and call it a day. The other Mac mini, however, was
refusing to boot from CD or from USB, and when disassembled so that we
could load the drive using another machine, is no longer booting (I suspect
something unfortunate happened to the daughterboard that the mini mounts
the hard drive with). I don't think further work on it is a good use of
anyone's time. I also have my own mac mini, which I'm happy to donate as a
communal station if it would be useful. Otherwise, I'm happy to keep it at
home as a spare.
I think the idea is to have one or two stations on the main table so
that for
coding nights, newer folks or people without their own computers
can be seated with the group. I'm not sure everyone is aware of the
upstairs computer, or the ones by the laser cutter.
I enjoy getting these old machines in working order, so if we have more
that are
salvagable, I'm happy to help. As it is now, it seems like we have
more desktops than we have keyboards for (as I mentioned to Juliana), and
we seem to have several laptops with no power supplies. If we need to make
room for newer donations, perhaps it's time to salvage parts that are
usable (RAM, drives, etc.)? We could organize a day/evening to get together
and make it a group activity.
