Hi Juliana,
I looked into this this evening, there are a couple of obstacles:
1. There are very few spare/extra keyboards/mice, so the mac minis,
even if set up correctly, would be difficult to use.
2. One of the mac minis in question has 500MB of RAM, and will be of
limited use to anyone using modern applications.
I think a couple of the laptops that are hanging around above those
shelves might be more helpful as spare computers for people to use on wnb
night.
IMO, the mac minis are probably best utilized as budget media center
options, or relatively low-power usage servers. If/when we're interested in
doing so, I have a Debian 11 disc specifically for i386 macs I burned that
I'm happy to bring by to share.

Changing the original subject, but it would be nice to have those mac
minis plugged as “communal computers”, at wnb night sometimes ppl ask me to
use a spare computer.

Correcting myself on laptop power draw:

Looks like idle laptop power draw, on average, is well below the mac
mini's 23W.
FWIW, I think the Mac minis, if loaded with a lightweight linux distro,
could be used for a basic coding class, or perhaps a DVD player.

Last time Rajah and I went looking, we couldn't find any pis, and the

The mac minis I saw (and the one I have at home, which was of a
similar model) are
late 2006, and according to apple have an idle power
draw of 23W:

Assuming the info I found is right (
https://energyusecalculator.com/electricity_laptop.htm), an average
laptop uses 60w. So the mini might be a good solution for us. I don't have
the expertise necessary to test/compare power draw of a given laptop
though; would anyone be interested in doing so? I'd love to learn.
