plugged as “communal computers”, at wnb night sometimes ppl ask me to use a
spare computer.

Looks like idle laptop power draw, on average, is well below the mac
mini's 23W.
FWIW, I think the Mac minis, if loaded with a lightweight linux distro,
could be used for a basic coding class, or perhaps a DVD player.

Assuming the info I found is right (
https://energyusecalculator.com/electricity_laptop.htm), an average
laptop uses 60w. So the mini might be a good solution for us. I don't have
the expertise necessary to test/compare power draw of a given laptop
though; would anyone be interested in doing so? I'd love to learn.
