I think that being out of money isn't a reason not to have someone handle
our finances: I think when you're out of money is the BEST time to have
someone proactively start managing finances.
Mark, I'd like to hear more about what you did at Noisebridge. Are you
available to chat some time this week in the evening?

I'm not a sudo member so feel free to ignore me -
but empowering someone
to keep track of expenses and funds raised/donated, give finance reports to
the members, and bottomline making sure the related tools/systems are
working can be super helpful, no matter how low-budget an org is.
e.g many eons ago I made this for noisebridge
http://cha-ching.noisebridge.net/graph/all (actually it needs a lot of
work as it's showing PayPal but not Stripe - sigh :) but honestly it can be
fun to maintain these tools, and a treasurer is the rabblerouser who can
encourage that to happen.

I don't think there's any point in
appointing a treasurer since we don't
even
have enough money to pay our rent to Omni, and if we do (or have more) we
should just give it to Omni anyway, or use it for improvements that can
be paid
through Omni's finance person (which is a position they are presently
hiring
for)
Omni's bank account is tied to Sudoroom's, they're basically the same
thing.
So there really isn't anything for anyone in sudoroom to do about money
other
than observe the flow and report, as well as solicit donations from
people and
grants, and recruit more membership. If we want to spend on specific
things,
they can most easily be paid for by a coalition of the willing, for
example
"who wants to split the cost of an epoxy floor?" followed by "why
don't
you
just donate more money monthly so we can meet our rent for now?"
another thing is that we need to get out of the habit of saying "somebody
should" do this, like "we should appoint somebody to be treasurer".
Sudoroom
is about empowerment, and with that comes responsibility for
participation.
Why not volunteer to be "treasurer"?

Is the same for me.
What do folks think about my suggestion that we appoint a treasurer?
