Hi friends,
Writing to invite you all to a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Sunday, December
14 in San Francisco.
Join volunteers from the Electronic Frontier Foundation
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Frontier_Foundation>, Creative
Commons <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons>, and the Bay
Area Wikipedia community to write and edit about human rights and free
speech online. We will improve, create, and update Wikipedia articles
related to global internet censorship. People regularly turn to
Wikipedia to get a basic overview of internet censorship, so it's
crucial that we ensure Wikipedia's coverage is up-to-date and accurate.
I'm a co-organizer and will be driving from the East Bay to participate,
if anyone wants a ride! Let me know if you have any questions or want a
lift.
# *Date*: December 14, 2014
# *Time*: 1-5pm
# *Location*: Electronic Frontier Foundation

(815 Eddy Street, San Francisco, CA 94109)

Edit-a-thons are actually really fun. You end up learning a ton, become
a stronger writer, and produce articles that will be read by millions.
This is also a great way to learn more about Wikipedia.
Wikipedia entries on Internet censorship are thin, particularly about
regions where censorship is most problematic, since users in those areas
are often restricted from editing. Internet censorship impacts users
everywhere, because fewer people are able to upload or contribute to the
Internet or access information online, making our digital commons less
robust and less diverse.
As someone who has helped with a lot of individual case advocacy, let me
tell you all that this is one of the best ways to help raise awareness
about international issues, where we often have little influence. Often
for long standing cases of injustice, a good Wikipedia presence raises
awareness more than most any news article.
Here's a link to an edit-a-thon we did earlier this year to raise
awareness about imprisoned journalists in Ethiopia:

All my best,
April

This Sunday we're editing Wikipedia to expand articles on Internet
censorship worldwide. Learn and raise awareness!

The march is supposed to gather at 2pm at Oscar Grant, and they'll start
moving to the Court House at 2.30pm. Did Francisco mean 1.30?

Bump again. Gratipay now (finally) supports emails. Please everybody,
add an email address to your account so you will always get
notifications when your cards are declined. And PLEASE, consider
giving more. We really really really need the money. THANK YOU!

I would like them to be on our side too, and I think "our side" must
unequivocably be the side of prioritizing human needs over property
values.
Hi,
I've been going back and forth with the BID regarding a lotta things
(prompted by the massive hike in our BID tax) and the external appearance
of the building believe it or not is a big issue with regards a perception
of how neighbor-friendly we are.
Great strides have been made visavis debris and garbage ending up outside,
and that is great. However, the newly-longer line of chairs chained up
outside the building, while useful of course, frankly is starting to look
too janky and an eyesore at this point.
In order to improve somewhat the outside appearance of our building and the
perception of neighbors, I would like to cut down on the number of outside
chairs. Basically, I think we should remove all but the bench and the
bare-metal chairs. IE, I think all the new white chairs should be removed.
It's just too much.
In addition, by the way, technically we do not have permission from the
city to put any seating outside. I've looked at our property line and its
not clear actually that it extends a few feet from the building. Even if it
did, there is an easement with the city's sidewalk that means they have
control over it.
I appreciate the doocratic effort to provide more outside seating, but can
we please remove these extra white chairs? Its overkill imo.
Thank yoooo

Are you going to 31C3? It's going to be fantastic!
Amongst other way cool things, I'm organizing the Hardware Hacking Area -- a huge area full of people making all sorts of things. We'll have all sorts of tools available.
If you're going, please consider giving a workshop or talk or presentation or demo at the Hardware Hacking Area.
All you need to do is fill out the form for a Self Organized "Session":
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2014/wiki/Form:Session
On this page, you can name your workshop.
On the next page is the form. For the "Assembly" field, start typing in "Hardware" and it will show you the suggestion automatically for Hardware Hacking Area (which you can click).
We need more cool workshops!
Also -- there is a BACH "Assembly". If you're going to 31C3, please join this assembly by adding it to your user profile after you register on the 31C3 wiki.
Thanks,
Mitch.
Hey y'all!
So far I've only had 2 people officially confirm with me that they want
space to sell things on Saturday.
If you are planning to participate in our little Holiday Bazaar, please
just shoot me an email so that I know how many people I need to set up for!
If you have folding tables or saw horses that could be used as table bases,
please bring them as we only have a couple of folding tables at the Omni.
Also - feel free to come by early to help me set up :)
