Tenants Together, California's Statewide Organization for Renters' Rights
(based in San Francisco), seeks volunteers to become tenants’ rights
counselors. Tenants Together volunteers have worked alongside over ten
thousand California renters as they learn and fight for their rights.
Counselors help tenants fight against evictions, rent increases,
uninhabitable living conditions and the wholesale displacement of their
communities.
*Counselors are key in the fight against gentrification and displacement. *As
a Tenant Hotline Counselor you will play a key role in empowering tenants
to assert their rights and protect their homes and families. Recently
counselors have been educating tenants in cities like Alameda, Hayward,
Richmond and Concord that are being massively affected by the affordable
housing crisis in SF and the Bay Area to make sure tenants don’t pack up
and leave when they get a rent increase. As we have seen in SF and Oakland,
the appalling impacts of displacement always more intensely affect people
of color, low income communities, disabled and elderly folks, and immigrant
communities. Counselors have the opportunity to work directly with those
who are most affected by the housing crisis, not only to bring them vital
information, but to catalyze them to organize, and to support them in this
struggle for their rights.
*The next scheduled training, over two days, is: *
*Monday, May 24th 5:30-8pm *
*Tuesday, May 25th 5:30-8pm *
BOTH DAYS are required to complete the counseling training. You will learn
invaluable skills to help your community and become part of a team fighting
for housing justice.
Volunteers are expected to commit to at least 3 hours per week at the
Tenants Together office located at 474 Valencia St, San Francisco. The
Hotline operates Monday through Friday, 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., and
Thursdays 6:00-8:00 pm (we can also consider alternative time
slots/duration during the week, please contact Sara to discuss)
We aim to help build an anti-racist, feminist, multiracial, anti-oppressive
tenant movement. This means we do not tolerate racism, homophobia, ableism,
transphobia, islamophobia, classism, cis-sexism, or sexism. We also hope to
continue working to make this event, and our office, as accessible as
possible to everyone who is interested in being part of the fight for
housing justice.
*Accessibility:* The building/ office is wheelchair accessible and is 2
city blocks from 16th and Mission BART . We will be taking regular breaks
throughout the training. We have a gender inclusive bathroom. Unfortunately
we are not currently a scent-free working space. If you have any
accessibility concerns, requests or comments please email
sara(a)tenantstogether.org

Hello fellow-JS-ers,
Tomorrow night (Thursday 4/28) at Javascript night, I'm planning to work
through this
<http://www.meetup.com/Build-With-Code-San-Francisco/events/230640534/>
lecture/program on
some aspects of the language I haven't yet gone deeply into. Hopefully
enough interested people show up to do the pair programing part of the
agenda :)
>From the event page:
- Learn and build with the hard parts of JavaScript through intuitive
lectures and pair-programming
- This week for Javascript - The Hard Parts we cover Callbacks and
Higher Order Functions. This includes how to handle or recreate the
functions:
- map • reduce • forEach This is a concept that 80% of JavaScript
engineers do not understand but are at the core of every single
successful
application.
- This is possible because we'll understand the essence of these
tough concepts and then switch into pair-programming through the
challenges
to cement the concepts
- The evening session is comprised of:
- 6:30 - 6:45pm: Sign in and meet your future pair programming
partner.
- 6:45 - 7:15pm: Core JavaScript concept for the challenge and
introduction to the secret hack for learning to code -
pair-programming.
- 7:15 - 8:00pm: Pair-programming.
If anyone has suggestions for better tutorials for these concepts in JS
specifically, please let me know. Otherwise, it will be interesting to try
it out and see what happens, and maybe get some new people in the space.
I'm trying to reverse-engineer the communication between a USB OTG device
and an android app.
Does anyone have a "Beagle USB 12" or similar device that I might be able
to borrow for a couple of hours?
Or failing that, does anyone have an android device with usbmon enabled in
the kernel?
I can meet you at your hackerspace of choice. Will bring beer :)

Hi! I'm working on a project to develop an open source decentralized system
for sharing biological samples (DNA, strains, etc). Think decentralized
github + inventory tracking + biological sneakernet :)
I'm doing the client and server side javascript but we need someone to help
us with the UI/UX design and implementation.
Let me know if you're interested and we can meet up somewhere.
Formal description below.
------
# Description
Work with the bionet team to develop UI/UX for web app aimed at
facilitating the decentralized sharing of open source physical biological
materials (DNA, strains, etc). Work will include developing web app look
and feel through communication with the rest of the team, sketching
wireframes, building mockups and implementing a UI for the web app using
HTML and CSS (no javascript).
# Time commitment
Part-time employed position for now.
# Start date
Immediate.
# About the team
We're a small team of six dedicated humans working on aspects of the
project
ranging from wetware and legal to hardware and software. You will work
closely with our software lead to integrate UI with frontend/backend
functionality, and collaborate with all teammembers on aspects of the app
as they relate to their respective areas of expertise.
# Software details
The project is new and development on the first prototype is underway but
in
its early stages. All code is being released under open source licenses.
The software stack is nodejs + leveldb + browserify using modules and ideas
for decentralized/offline web apps developed by folks including substack,
mafintosh, dominictarr and maxogden. Focus is on development and reuse of
small modular components rather than reliance on existing frameworks.
# Skills
UI/UX design experience. Extensive experience with modern web app frontend
html+css development for both desktop and mobile. Experience with
development of custom graphical UI assets. Basic command line experience
and ability to use git/github a plus. Javascript experience a plus but
definitely not required. Experience with open source development a plus.
# About The BioBricks Foundation
Our mission is to ensure that the engineering of biology is conducted in an
open and ethical manner to benefit all people and the planet.

Bay Area Bike Share <http://www.bayareabikeshare.com/> is about to install
a number of bike share stations in the East Bay. You can suggest locations
here:
http://suggest.bayareabikeshare.com/
I think it would be great to have a bike share station in front of the
Omni. If we can get enough people to vote for it, that might actually
happen...
Patrik
my friend found one of these in the trash:
http://www.glorystargroup.com/ClientFolder/glorystar2014/Library/Tree/pdf_S…
it has a 2GB SD card in it that seems to have gone bad but otherwise i
think it works. I have the big plastic display thing it was mounted in,
so we can put it on a wall somewhere and have it play whatever video you
want in a loop. It has speakers too if you want it to be really annoying.
if anyone wants it let me know, otherwise i'll stick it in the vending
machine.
