On February 25, some of our high school liaisons are hosting their own hackathon, and they're really excited about it. During the workshop portion of the event, they are looking for people to give a brief overview of some basic security concepts, as well as exercises for them to complete. For example, the lesson could consist of a presentation followed by simple CTF problems. It should last about an hour altogether. The *total time commitment* would be probably be around *3 hours in total* on the morning of *Saturday, February 25 *(I haven't confirmed exactly whether it will be 10 to 11 AM or 11 AM to 12 PM, plus transit time to the *MuleSoft Headquarters *in *SF*). If you're at all interested, please email me! We need a few more sets of hands to make this workshop a success, but I have a lot of experience in designing curriculum for this age group, and I'd be supporting every step of the way. Thanks! How do we help SudoRoom become more project-based?

Hey! I look back on my involvement in SudoRoom and Noisebridge and *I was most happy and having fun bouncing off ideas with people when working on projects.* This also contributed the most fun to SudoRoom and shows what is unique about the space. I got sucked into a bunch of interesting events, especially around teaching and helping lead Women Who Code meetups. That was very fun! I socialized with a lot of cool people and had good times. There were nice conversations. But these kinds of activities ultimately did not produce any tangible results that I could build upon. I am not interested in being an event planner or a teacher, although those are noble activities! *How can we help make SudoRoom a bit more project-based? *By putting new potential members on the path to creating projects, i think this would help with our retention. I keep mentioning again and again to new people that it's not so much fitting in with the people, having people hug you or going to events where everyone looks exactly like you that's important... meetups are all over the bay area. it's really the projects that suck people in and help them add diversity to the space. ============================= Romy Ilano romy(a)snowyla.com

Wi-Fi / Mesh at The Village (MLK & 36th, Marcus Garvey park aka Grove Shafter park)

Hello all, I just received a request from the people over at The Village, the encampment/occupation that was set up last week at the park on MLK & 36th. They wanted me to ask if people at the Sudoroom were able to help them get Wi-Fi set up over there. At one of last week's Assemblies Matt Senate suggested that Sudomesh was probably able to provide hardware for setting up an access point. The latest info I have (a few days old) is that Eli's across the street would be willing to share their connection, but I'm still verifying if that case. Would anyone interested to help be willing to either respond here, or preferably via Signal (my number is 510-771-7463). Thanks, I will report back once I know more details. Sierk

FEB 19th in Ballroom: Musicians and DIY Electronics Swap Meet

Hi Erik!!!!!! so nice to hear from you! I would love for you to have the event at Omni!! we have a booking system and here's a link. I just looked at the calendar for you (which is the first step) and it looks to me like February 19th is clear!!!!!!! That's assuming you want the main ballroom, which i think would be awesome. https://omnicommons.org/occupy don't worry about the second tuesday thing.. just say that Jake from Sudoroom wants to sponsor this event and that we want to reserve the ballroom for that date. As soon as your request comes in, i'll push to get it confirmed. I'm assuming we can collect donations of some kind to give to the Omni for use of the space? Just whatever is normal for an event like this at Gilman i guess. That's one of the questions on the form you'll see at the above link. Also, sudoroom will be able to supply a lot of cool electronic STUFF for the tables, so i think people who come to this will be very pleased. -jake note: sudoroom constantly has a big e-waste pile, and if you think the event will add to the unwanted electronics pile, we should plan for someone to take a truck to Universal Waste in Fruitvale after the event to clear it all out. "For the past several years internet service providers (ISPs) have been sending copyright alerts to online pirates on behalf of movie studios and record labels. These letters often used intimidating language with threats of hefty fines and service throttling, but much to the dismay to those who supported the effort, the letters were about as effective as spitting in the ocean to raise the tide. Even so, many of those involved in the initiative called the voluntary program a success even though they're choosing not to extend it. “After four years of extensive consumer education and engagement, the Copyright Alert System will conclude its work. The program demonstrated that real progress is possible when content creators, internet innovators and consumer advocates come together in a collaborative and consensus-driven process. CAS succeeded in educating many people about the availability of legal content, as well as about issues associated with online infringement," members of the Center for Copyright Information said in a statement <http://www.copyrightinformation.org/statement/statement-on-the-copyright-al…> . The program offered considerable leeway to pirates. Potential penalties weren't levied until an offender ignored six or more warnings and generally did not include the cancellation of internet service. Part of the reason is that ISPs weren't comfortable with being liable for their customers' behavior and having to penalize them. It took years to hammer out an agreement between major ISPs and both the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Part of the agreement called for the creation of the Center for Copyright Information to take charge of the program and provide a way for those who received notices to challenge them in arbitration. While some are spinning the program as a successful education campaign, Steven Fabrizio, executive vice president and global general counsel at the MPAA, remains frustrated at the lack of results among the worst offenders. "These repeat infringers are the ones who drive ongoing and problematic P2P piracy. In fact, an estimated 981 million movies and TV shows were downloaded in the U.S. last year using P2P," Fabrizio said in a statement, according to Variety <http://variety.com/2017/digital/news/copyright-alerts-piracy-mpaa-comcast-a…> . TV white spaces technology?

Hi, is anyone tracking how are things developing regarding TV white spaces technology [1] in US and EU? Microsoft has been doing some pilots [2] in Africa and Ofcom in UK [3], and there is a interesting study [4]. But I don't see if it is actually possible to buy any 2nd or 3rf gen devices either in US or EU. If anyone has some links please share them. What is the current legal situation, will tv white spaces spectrum be free to use, ie ISM or not? I have seen some discussions at the end od 2015regarding making tv white spaces ISM but nothing since then. I was trying to find some up to date information for EU and tv white space technology, but came short. If anyone is tracking this please share any info you have. Thanks, Valent. Part time javascript coder needed for sensor-based science education project

Video shooting in CCL Monday

Hi all, Just a quick heads-up that there will be a video crew shooting some footage in CCL this Monday. So please try to keep any noise to a minimum, especially within CCL / Sudo. We've scheduled the actual shooting to be mostly in the morning and early afternoon, so hopefully it won't interfere with other activities in the space. Thanks! Patrik
